Don't worry, it's something that can happen accidentally in that particular dungeon.

I would not suggest buy the story skip. The story is such a huge part of FFXIV that you would be doing yourself disservice if you ignored all the ARR plot. In fact I don't understand how you can enjoy the game without this tedious set up. Yes it is slower, yes it is a little old school mmorpg, but it gets SO GOOD! I'd say it's worth going through ARR, plus that's how you learn how to play the game.

It is also worth noting that you need to also complete the dungeon on normal mode before The quest Not Easy Being Green becomes available. (The side quest Trauma Queen simply unlocks normal mode, but does not have a dungeon completion component to it.)

Mostly you're going to just want to follow quests with 
indicators. Those are the main story, and will keep you from getting lost. Starting out, that's the best thing to do because the game will walk you through pretty much everything you need to know.

They won't be required to interact with you directly, but most people (at least in dungeons) will be happy to explain things if you ask.

Yes, the free trial will greatly limit your social interactions, since you can't join a free company (player guild) to do content with you or just chat if you're bored. You can, as others have mentioned, use the Novice Network as a sort of pseudo FC, but that only lasts as long as you have the New Adventurer status.

Ahhh, like open world events in Guild Wars 2? Yeah idk, I'm a newish player. (bout to finish first xpac) And only really experience that in dungeons/raids. Making friends is pretty easy, just go any populated city and chill out there.
