The conflict between man and kobold began about 700 years ago, when refugee settlers from Aerslaent arrived on Vylbrand, a landmass which appeared completely uninhabited. They built a few villages on shore but after a few years were suddenly attacked without warning and massacred by the kobolds, who by all accounts they had not known were there.

Limsa needed more land to sustain itself--land which the kobolds held sacred, but apparently weren't actually using for much of anything
so they built some farms
Limsa was also facing war for survival against the Sahagin at the time so they were pretty desperate.
The kobolds viewed this as a violation of the treaty and hostilities resumed
And have basically continued ever since.
