My issue was some game related, but the worst part was 1st and 2nd characters I created wasn't my cup of tea which made me hate the game isself. so when ultimates are still current ish content, and you don't have a high enough ilvl to power the sync, the BiS are going to use gear that's appropriate to that ilvl rather than use higher ilvl gear
so like for the older ultimates, the gap is big enough that not having melds is fine
but for like TEA since its still current, you want to use appropriate ilvl gear to get the meld bonus

Oh yes, I remember now! Back then, the colour thing was about materia melding. Every item has a stat cap which you can't meld past, and higher "colours" had default stats closer to the cap. But the cap itself was based on the ilvl entirely.
