I mean... probably a quicker answer is no. Outside of not needing to buy gear again for the level, nothing really carries to the lvl 1 job. You're still level/role locked to what you can use AND what you can do.
You do get an exp boost for every job under your highest, and have unlocked more ways to get XP (like more roulettes) which you can still benefit from at their unlock levels though.

Level 40 is by far not the worst when it comes to people realising they shouldn't have been skipping the story but you would be fairly confused by the very specific sequence of events you're doing at that point in the main story but I think you're smart enough to roughly work things out over time
