MSQ weapons are fine to use. At level 50 in the MSQ (not character level) you'll start earning a currency called Tomestone of Poetics which can be used to purchase the "endgame" gear from ARR, HW, and SB expansions, which are the best gear until about halfway through the next expansion.

Poetics sources are mostly group content. The quickest would probably be hunt trains though.
Those usually only take about 30 minutes or so to clear through all of the zones.

As far as I know it's not entirely an error with your game itself, but rather the Windows version of the launcher that prevents updates. Give me a few minutes, there was another way to workaround this that I've suggested to some other people earlier, I just need to find my logs.
