I usually recommend Archer as a good starting class for people who are new to the game

depending on what content he has access to, there are switching options that open up at 50, and 60, so he might prefer to press on than to jump back. but the jumping back isn't very far.

My advice to your friend is to consider if he wants to play a dps role or a healer role, and then try Conjurer / Archer depending on what type of role he prefers. Dancer, Red Mage and Machinist are nice classes as well, but useless advice considering your friend needs to be at least level 50 to unlock some of them.

Archer turns into Bard at level 30 and gets access to some pretty nice buffs, which might suit an altruistic playstyle that your friend might be looking for. ^^

If you're a high level you could boost him in the overworld by letting him tag mobs and then having you finish them off. Make sure you're not in a party though.

It's not efficient, but it works. Hunting Log gives a nice boost as well.
