Yes, the free trial lets you try a large amount of the game. (All of the base game and first expansion.)
Never really a bad time to try since the current patch is a “catch-up” patch designed around getting people to easily get near-endgame gear easily.
As for roleplay I can’t confirm those for myself since I don’t participate in them, but if you’re in NA then the Crystal datacenter has two of the main RP servers (Balmung/Mateus)

No, poetics is only for combat gear.
You use yellow scrips and white scrips for level cap crafting/gathering gear.

@spark axle Not sure what you mean with "new servers" but each new player gets an icon marking them as a new player. They also get access to a special newcomer chat where they can interact with more veteran players called mentors. Also the community in general is super nice. So yeah, I'd say it may even be one of the best games for newcomers 🙂

so this is probably a tech question more than a FFXIV-related one, but earlier today my headset died (it had been dying for months now, so not surprising), and I'd just gotten myself a replacement, which god does it sound so different to my old one. While I'd gotten it to sound mostly the same with everything, for some reason FFXIV sounds really flat in some areas, and I'm not sure why. Ambient audio, like the fireworks and such are very directional and very 'defined,' however general sound effects and attacks sound really, 'flat' for some reason? I've tried tweaking the settings, but it feels like everything else is stereo, or surround, while battle effects are mono.
I went from 'Corsair VOID PRO Wireless' to 'Logitech Pro X' since the quality didn't seem too bad to me.
Has anyone had similar experiences, or use the same headset as me and have a setup that works for them?

Yes, talking about the game! It has lots of features to make new people learn things, like the Hall of the Novice (a set of mini instances where the game teaches you about being a tank/dps/healer)
also skill progression is somewhat slow, especially early on, so no way to get overwhelmed with buttons to press
