Hello everyone! I've always followed the progression and updates of FFXIV and recent patches and content really caught my attention, so I might jump back in Vana'diel Eorzea for some fun times.
Considering that I did quit at the end of Heavensward, the last thing I remember doing was sending Nidhogg into oblivion (sort of) or actually, helping someone do that since I was a WHM. I know I'm missing a truckload of content, so what would be the best route here? Buy every expansion and grind through the story up to recent patches? Will there be any mandatory quest that I should not / cannot skip? How much time do you think is required to catch up with things (gameplay-wise and lore-wise)?

@lunar spire first off spoilers so I'd spoiler tag.
Secondly you can get Shadowbringers if you want now yeah and generally you'll want to do any of the raids you might have skipped or left unfinished. And then move onto the next expansion and do their raids before moving onto the next and etc etc. I'd always do the raids and trial series for an expansion before moving onto the next. In terms of other content you shouldn't skip out on I would do the Heavensward retrospective one you can do after base Heavensward story completion sometime before you go into Stormblood.
There would be other small things I'd argue are somewhat loreful but it's such a pain I wouldn't do it and neither would the lore from it be important in the foreseeable future like the Eureka content

@lunar spire it's not that scary. Just go through your skills. Maybe look up the new jobs, pick one and get used to the new toolkit and go. All the raids minus the ARR 8-man raid have a normal casual mode and that ARR 8-man raid is often done unsynced with higher levels to make them trivial

The only thing that'll help by choosing a magical DPS class to start with to get Red Mage is that you already have magical DPS gear but Red Mage gives you okay gear when you unlock it so it's pretty redundant

Once he does, every Shroud area will have the weather "Tension"
This means the Fate is up somewhere in the Shroud
Look for it, Shout it out and find people to clear it with you
