two meters, Kiwi - one for progress, one for quality. Two skill types - one's "synethsis" (drives progress), the other's a "touch" (improves quality). You're trying to drive the quality bar up and up before you finish the synthesis, to achieve an HQ result.
If you're just spamming canes you've probably got a very low HQ %

The vendor gear is tiered, too; you'll see improvements every couple of levels, on up through 50
then as you get to heavensward you'll see 61, 63, 65 ... on vendors in the Jeweled Crozier @ ishgard

Varies; usually it's a mix of weaver and leather for the gear you wear, then blacksmithing and maybe carpentry for gathering tools.

@white bronze What kinds of problems? The typical solution to that is to have two gear sets, two glamour plates, and link the gear sets to the glamour plates. Then the items would be reglam'd whenever you change gear sets. Though you might have to be in a city for it to work right
