from there you can put multiple glamoured gear into "plates" to make full outfits

but with a stat priority you can meld without looking at stat tiers, just make sure you get full stat gains out of each materia (so +60 direct hit rate is still better than +30 crit because you overcap on crit)

@rain owl I don't know if you've played other MMOs but in FFXIV Tanks should be able to hold enemies VERY easily. If you've give them 3 seconds on enemies you should be safe to attack normally.

Info

'When can I get my first mount?'

The quest that allows you to use mounts, 'My Little Chocobo' is unlocked by completing the level 20 main story quest 'The Company You Keep'. The quest is located at the Grand Company base you chose and you'll need to buy the Chocobo Issuance from your Grand Company Quartermaster. You can get the 200 needed Grand Company seals by doing the main story quest that comes after 'The Company You Keep'.

'Are there any differences between mounts?'

Besides looks, all mounts are the same speed along with being able to fly in the expansion zones. Some mounts allow multiple people to ride at once.

'Can I make my mount faster?'

Zones have one or two ranks of mount speed that increase the ground speed of mounts.
