but @dull shoal at level 15 you can go to a smithy in one of the adventurers guilds in the cities and do the "tutorial" basically. completing it will give you a nice set of armor and a ring that boosts exp until lvl 30.
eating food also gives a tiny 3% increase.
if you havent started yet, you should definitely join a preferred worlds because all classes below 70 get a double exp boost on those worlds.
other than that, the will carry you through the game mostly. Also make sure to do as these usually unlock stuff. you dont need to do any other sidequests as they usually also arent very rewarding

Limsa Lominsa for Arcanist, which starts as DPS but gets the option of two jobs, one of which is a healer (Scholar)

and Ishgard for Astrologian, but you can't enter that city until you start the Heavensward story quests

soul crystals upgrade classes into jobs

most of the time you barely even realize they're there, for jobs without classes you can't even unequip it

to unlock the level 80 dungeon roulette you have to unlock all level 80 dungeons that are not in expert roulette

right now there are only three of those

the final dungeon of Shadowbringers, the Twinning and Akadaemia Anyder

after you finish Shadowbringers you can unlock the Twinning from a quest in the Crystarium, and the Akadaemia from a quest in Eulmore

As a side note to all of that ^, the amount of said stats that you get at character creation don't matter. Your gear at higher levels will give you vastly higher amounts of the relevant stats.

There is gear for every level cap (50/60/70) which can be purchased for poetics (and also upgraded with items purchased with poetics).

That gear will have the highest ilevel of the non-raid gear for each expansion, and can potentially last you for about 5 levels into the next.

Why Stone, Sky, Sea is a bad metric to measure DPS

Info

1. SSS does not account for a job’s RDPS contribution via skills like Battle Voice
2. SSS is a 3 minute burst window where you adjust your rotation to fit in that period and does not reflect a realistic raid scenario
3. Different jobs will be in peaks and troughs of their burst windows
4. Different jobs have different SSS dps requirements
5. SSS is not accurately tuned for the jobs they are supposed to represent in most cases
6. 3 minutes is short enough to be able to be affected by lucky DH Crit bursts
7. Certain jobs gain dps by having additional party members like Dancer/Monk

Without seeing how you play I can't really provide any specific advice, my best advice would be do something like the new EX or E5S and hope somebody uploads a parse so you can see your damage in actual content

Thaun has a good point. For the free trial it doesn't really matter which version you're using since you're not paying.

Any character data is attached to your account, not the version, so you can purchase the game from Steam later and not lose your progress.

Even if you play the trial on the "PC" version rather than the "Steam" version.

but basically if you're trying to unlock all of the paintings, you need to do all of the sightseeing logs

since the paintings are tied to getting the achievements

When I switched to summoner for the first time (level 30), it gave me "Aetherflow" which doesn't exist anywhere in my ability lists, and Energy Drain changed from granting Aetherflow II (the arcanist version) to costing 1 aetherflow

'When can I get my first mount?'

The quest that allows you to use mounts, 'My Little Chocobo' is unlocked by completing the level 20 main story quest 'The Company You Keep'. The quest is located at the Grand Company base you chose and you'll need to buy the Chocobo Issuance from your Grand Company Quartermaster. You can get the 200 needed Grand Company seals by doing the main story quest that comes after 'The Company You Keep'.

'Are there any differences between mounts?'

Besides looks, all mounts are the same speed along with being able to fly in the expansion zones. Some mounts allow multiple people to ride at once.

'Can I make my mount faster?'

Zones have one or two ranks of mount speed that increase the ground speed of mounts. The first rank comes from completing specific quests in the main scenario quests, with the second rank coming from Riding Maps which are bought with either Allied Seals, Centurio Seals, or Bicolor Gemstones. Mount Speed Boosts do not increase the flying speed of mounts.
