"headphone splitters" can just be used in reverse as a combiner

graceful pine
#

It converts the signal into something for your pc or a mixing board

outer sand
#

ah yeah I'm trying to remember why I bought that pre-amp what the hell

sly elk
#

hmmmmm?

graceful pine
#

It’s a very dry sound

outer sand
#

like I don't need it and I don't hoard stuff zzz

#

very dry sound? 🤔

#

so using this splitter will compromise the quality from each keyboard and PC?

graceful pine
#

Well no

#

You’d just need to add in effects in the pc

sly elk
#

if you use them at the same time maybe haha

graceful pine
#

Sometimes di sounds are desirable

#

Funk guitar is a pure di sound

#

With some compression

#

Get a di unit maybe a 3.5 to 6.35 converter

#

Though question is why do you specifically want your pc’s external speakers

#

Is the keyboards built in just bad

#

Well it’s Casio so that answers itself ig

outer sand
#

trying to find why I bought that pre-amp

#

or maybe my stupid younger self didn't calculate enough

#

yeah if possible hehe

graceful pine
#

Well a direct line into the speaker would be easy

outer sand
#

I mean if I can improve the quality, but maybe you are right, I can just use the built-in speakers 😹

graceful pine
#

Though really an amp would be better here

#

Far more expensive though obviously

graceful pine
#

Is uh something

outer sand
#

oh wait I finally remember..

#

direct connection between Shure S57 to PC won't work yeah?

#

requires pre-amp to be able to process the sound?

graceful pine
#

Usually yes

#

Well not to the pc

outer sand
#

ahhh finally.. ok nvm

graceful pine
#

To the amplifier or speaker

#

The preamp doesn’t help when running into the pc

outer sand
#

wait so S57 XLR male to 3.5 male to PC will work?

graceful pine
#

Into the pc not really

#

Unless the keyboard has a built in di

#

You’d want to run it through a di unit(or something similar)

outer sand
#

ok I'll just chuck the idea and use the internal keyboard speaker I reckon ._.

#

ty ty

graceful pine
#

Preamps are for amplifiers and speakers

#

What they do is boost the signal to make it easier for the amp

#

A di stabilizes the signal

outer sand
#

what's this?

#

that's the pre-amp I posted

#

is that the Di you were talking about?

graceful pine
#

No

#

That’s for going into an old school vacuum tube amplifier

#

That’s an old school preamp you bought lol

#

Vacuum tube

outer sand
#

yeah It was 9 years ago

graceful pine
#

No as in really old school

#

Vaccum tubes were replaced in the 60’s(in amplifiers)

#

They are still used when you want that vintage tube amp sound

#

That’s also a microphone preamp

#

Can be used with other things but meant for microphones

outer sand
#

ah yeah Shure SM57 is a microphone

#

I reckon It was used for that, figured it out

graceful pine
#

Sm57 is a very good microphone

#

One of the most popular studio mics

#

So you had an sm57

#

That makes sense you used that preamp with the mic

outer sand
#

at least I don't feel that stupid from buying the set, ty ty ._.

graceful pine
#

You have an sm57 still

outer sand
graceful pine
#

If you need a desk mic

#

It’s one of the best

#

Been used since the 60’s in everything from live and studio music to presidential speeches

outer sand
#

ok hmm, I'll give it a thought, I'll try to figure out, this is a good opportunity probably since I just recently broke my headset ._.

#

but

graceful pine
#

Though you’ll need an audio interface

#

Run from the preamp into the interface into your pc

#

But that mic is really good

outer sand
#

I'm afraid if my relative come and see my PC setup, they'll ask me to sing, and if they figured out my voice is bad, they'll laugh at me

outer sand
graceful pine
#

Audio interface

#

They’re not that expensive

#

The preamp will boost the signal from the mic prevent it from distorting and increasing quality, then the interface will convert it into a signal your pc can read

#

Can dust cause analog stick drift? I have a DualShock4 that was experiencing some intermittent drifting on the right analog. Today I decided to crack it open and just swap the board(with sticks attached) with another I had just laying about.
The one that was just laying about didn't seem to work at all and when I put everything back with their original components my stick drift was completely gone.

I've never experienced stick drift related to just dust before is it really possible? Sorry for the long message.

#

do some mobos

#

increase fps?

#

and if they do is it like

#

negligible?

hard drift
#

i mean some motherboards handle certain cpus better if you're using say a first gen am4 board with a 5000 or 5800x3d so i mean in a roundabout way yes, but the testing was negligible for the gains and it would matter even less at higher resolutions

kindred brook
#

so like is all PCI-E lanes like equal

#

or does like different chipsets

#

or controllers

#

etc

#

make any differences

hard drift
#

for the most part the difference between 3 and 4 is negligible still

hard drift

kindred brook
#

was curious

#

if pci-e lanes

#

actually made a diff

hard drift
#

they do make a difference for sure but at the current place we are, v4 instead of v5 won't be much different 99% chance

#

if it was gen 2 or something it'd be a lot worse of course

kindred brook
#

I was looking at this

and then I remember bidori saying

#

DDR5 under 32 GB sticks

#

is dogshit

hard drift
#

nah

kindred brook
#

whats c40

hard drift
#

it's ddr4 cl20 basically but the difference between cache latency is pretty negligible for most people

hard drift
hard drift
#

32 is fine, 16 is not lol for ddr5 atleast

#

also wtf are you needing more than 32 for?

kindred brook
#

I dunno

#

Maybe it was 8 GB DDR5 sticks

hard drift
#

yeah, 8GB ddr5 sticks are dogshit because it's not spec

kindred brook
#

oh ok

#

I think I wait for better cache to be cheaper then

#

what should I look for?

#

C21?\

#

oh

#

c36?

#

whats the equivalent of ddr4 3200

#

for ddr5

#

why does latency dramatically increase

in ddr5 oo

#

wait isn't latency a delay?

so like why would more speed = bigger delay

#

Latency has gone up consistently with the ram speeds. DDR2 was like 6, DDR3 8-9, DDR4 14-16. I will say it is a bigger jump than in the past tho seeing as DDR5 latency is what? 30+?

#

I guess that could help explain why its performance is kinda lackluster still outside of some very specific use-cases

umbral moss
#

doesn't DDR5 use a radically different structure from the traditional tras setup?

#

which is why the latency is way out of sync compared to what you'd expect, given the DDR2-3-4 evolution?

odd sand
#

They use two half-channels is all I know about

umbral moss
#

I thought there was some kind of new voltage regulator or something and that's why the latency spiked so much

#

they couldn't just be like "make more speed", they changed something about the dimm PCB to enable DDR5-6-7

paper tusk
#

Yeah i want to say ram sticks have extra stuff on them

kindred brook
#

what do you mean "extra stuff"

paper tusk
#

And its still new enough that decent latency is stupid expensive (double for a 30 kit which is 50-75 bucks going from ddr4 3600 to ddr5-36)

#

I want to also say voltage regulation

#

Registered clock driver and temp regulation

kindred brook
#

so is this "smart" memory?

paper tusk
#

Not sure as much smart as hacks to ensure everything is happy

hard drift
umbral moss

I wonder if the penalty is because of the unoptimized micro

#

they all own each other

odd sand
#

I don't think they do. Dr Pepper is part of the Dr Pepper Snapple Group

#

I do find it ironic Snapple has their name on the company when nobody actually buys Snapple anymore

#

Apparently Dr Pepper Snapple was bought by Keurig in 2018, so its Keurig Dr Pepper now. Also Keurig first started in 1993 wow... it took them a long time to break into the mainstream then bc I had never heard of keurig k-cups etc. before like 8-10 years ago

#

I knew K-cups were a terrible value, but geezus:

#

It also fueled enormous revenue growth, and allowed GMCR to transition fully from deriving 95% of its revenue from its low-margin wholesale coffee business in the late 1990s (approximately $65 million), to deriving 95% of its revenue from high-margin sales of K-Cups as of 2014 (more than $4.3 billion).

#

Ahh, I followed the acquisition soup: Dr Pepper was owned by Cadbury, then Cadbury was bought by Kraft, but they spun off Dr Pepper Snapple which was then purchased by Green Mountain/Keurig. MiqoteDepressed

I was thinking of hooking up some computers at a business.

should I put the cables going up into the drop ceiling or along the walls near the baseboard? Say I used extra long USB cables and a long HDMI cable for the monitor.

I can think of a few ways to do it

#

one easy way would be to use rackmount PCs in a locked cabinet in between each pod of tables or whatever

#

you shouldn't really have lag problems using long cables, but long cables will get very very cumbersome very quickly.

#

you can do HDMI over ethernet, and I think there are solutions where you'd put a dongle on each end with hdmi/usb stuff

Just put the PCs in locked cabinets

naked shorts are where it gets dangerous, because you're not loaning out something you own, you actually own nothing so you're on the hook for the premium of the sale and on the repurchase of the share

shorts are usually a hedge bet

the GME gamma squeeze is what happens when stock availability dries up and shorts come due

you can lose $infinity if you naked short something and the price spirals beyond what you made from the original sale

I like Yahoo Finance's page on Tesla with its P/E of 96 saying "Fairly Valued" paissasquint

umbral moss
#

I don't know why people ride elon's dick so much

#

tesla has had what, 6 years to fix their quality issues?

#

and they still rank at the bottom in initial quality?

#

they're worse, on average, than hyundai was in the 80s

#

and hyundai was a budget brand that made absolute dogshit cars

odd sand
#

I don't even think I was aware of Hyundai until the mid 90s

umbral moss
#

if you drove a hyundai accent up too steep of a hill the transaxle would blow out

#

couldn't have the AC on if you wanted to climb a 5 degree grade

#

or the engine didn't have enough power to climb it haha

odd sand
#

As the rest of the market jumps on the EV wagon in the next 5 years, I think Tesla is gonna tumble pretty badly.

umbral moss
#

yeah

#

hyundai, ironically, is getting really high marks for the ioniq series

odd sand
#

Which may be why he was doomsaying about bankruptcy last week

umbral moss
#

the ioniq 6 looks breddy gud and they said it'll be cheaper than the 5

odd sand
#

I like the looks of the EV6 more than the Ioniq, but it's mostly the same platform

umbral moss
#

oh wait, he just wanted to dodge paying taxes, never mind

odd sand
#

Pretty much every rich person ever

umbral moss
#

hyundai's been barely on my radar so I don't know the difference

odd sand
#

EV6 is the Kia EV using the same powertrain afaik

#

Hyundai and Kia are apparently owned by the same parent company, so they do some amount of platform sharing ala GM brands

umbral moss
#

yeah

hard drift
umbral moss
#

great, now the benchmarks will perform as poorly as real programs

hard drift
sly elk
#

the funny thing is that the transition to mass market EVs is a great time for new companies to get in and disrupt things... and also established companies with a bad rep to improve their rep

#

-points at someone on jalopnik considering the cadillac lyriq the best EV- -hides-

#

i would like it a lot better if it had a normal trunk instead of that pseudo SUV look

jaunty light
sly elk
#

eh it's remarkable for a site that generally hates on american cars

umbral moss
#

why not just buy a fuckin rolls royce EV for that much

graceful pine
#

like important for the initial boom of EV's, but no longer dominant

#

though wouldn't be surprised if Space X becomes bigger than tesla in profits

#

depending on how succesful starship is

sly elk
#

i'd take it over a model 3 all day long

#

i think model 3s are supposed to cost 40-50 though so that's quite a jump

odd sand
umbral moss
#

because americans want giant heavy SUVs

odd sand
#

I'm 95% certain it's just because margins are higher on SUVs, so they neglected the platforms for their sedans and coupes to drive people into SUVs

umbral moss
#

if I get into an accident, I want the other person to die

#

europoors love hatchbacks, so it's not like the form factor is exclusively an american thing

odd sand
#

Lag behind on bluetooth and builtin navigation and other features and oh look, people reluctantly go with the SUV. Then the automakers are like "Oh look! Our highest margin segment has booming sales! Guess we cancel all the normal cars now!"

umbral moss
#

it's also because SUVs are the most popular platform in america, owing to their size, weight, and perceived safety due to the above

odd sand
#

Except for that whole rollover thing

#

And the whole "Pancake pedestrians, killing them, instead of having them glance off."

sly elk
#

also, dogs are very popular these days

#

almost everyone I know who bought an suv did this because they wanted to carry their dog in the back

umbral moss
#

there's a really weird sentiment that in the event of an accident, the other person involved should die

sly elk
odd sand
#

I think the N64 cartridges are probably the most sturdy bc they seemed to have the thickest cases

umbral moss
# sly elk

more like noooo there's a speck of dust on my contacts I won't work at all

#

CDs were a massive improvement over cartridges 😔

jaunty light
odd sand
#

Dun do DUN duh DUNN

#

Yeah the P3 also had the cartridge design up to like 1ghz was it?

sly elk
#

idk. I remember there being some real downsides to buying the cartridge instead of the socket 370

#

i think it had a slower bus speed

odd sand
#

I want to say P2 was like 266-300-333-400 ... and P3 started with 450?

sly elk
#

I did a P3 build with a generic PSU that blew up and killed it, and later replaced it with a celery build haha

#

looks like they did 500-1ghz

odd sand
#

I remember was it the P2 or P3 Celeron that was just an insane overclocker

sly elk
#

they also admittedly didn't look nearly as cool irl

odd sand
#

You could like, double the clockrate in OC with the Celeron

sly elk
#

the heatsink clip always covered up the cool looking hologram

#

it was cool being to yank the cpu with the heatsink attached, though!

#

plus with water coolers these days, sure why not.

odd sand
#

I didn't realize they had Slot1 and Socket 370 of the same speeds between 800 and 1100. An odd choice.

#

Also didn't realize in general that P3 went back to normal sockets and had a range of 450-1400mhz. early 2000s was really wild for speed increases heh

#

I went from P2-300 to an AMD Thunderbird 1.1ghz, so I didn't pay much attention to Intel in that period

sly elk
#

the period between like 1998 and 2002

#

things went freaky fast

umbral moss
#

thunderbirds hitting 2.5GHz from like, 800 MHz was hilarious

#

just keep putting volts and it keeps clocking

#

now CPUs are like "oh you increased the frequency 1 Hz? hope you like sync errors everywhere and constant crashing"

sly elk
#

like we went from 300mhz to 3ghz in less than 5 years

#

i think**

umbral moss
#

yeah, transistor design was wild then

#

now it's incremental 1-2% gains YOY and a lot of "don't worry guys, the revolution is coming"

sly elk
#

yea but my watch has a more powerful cpu than my computer did back then XD

odd sand
#

That sounds too crazy but you're mostly right. I had the P2-300 in like 1998 and Prescott 3ghz it says was Feb 2004 so 6 years

#

and by late 2004 they were at 3.8ghz

sly elk
#

ye

#

my christmas present in 98 was a cyrix 266 haha it was.. outdated by then of course

#

but it wasn't like buying a core duo today

odd sand
#

It's interesting then how we pushed 4ghz by 2005 and then sorta hit a thermal wall on that for the next 10 years. Although I guess going multicore means you had to keep clocks down bc the cores are all close together

#

Going from P4 1.8 to X2 3800+ was

#

"You mean I can open a browser and an explorer window at the same time and not lag up for 30 seconds?"

sly elk
#

yea i think at this point a lot of performance improvements come from custom logic being made to do specific things

#

like video encoding/decoding

#

a lot of what made 2000s computers irritating to watch youtube videos with, for example, was h264 decoding

odd sand
#

Everyone rages about AVX512 now, but I don't really understand how that relates to the average user

sly elk
#

it's like a kitchen full of gadget appliances vs one that has none

#

and having to cook popcorn in a frying pan

#

vs having a dedicated machine that makes popcorn perfectly and quicker

odd sand
#

Haha yeah I remember for anime club I was showing 1080p encodes of Dennou Coil in like 2008 and the H264 decoding was using like 97% CPU. Now playing a video is like 3% CPU haha

#

It's hard for me to tell how good the gains really are these days though, since most of their benchmarks push multicore performance and such

#

When in reality, single-threaded IPC is still very important in games even if Unreal is pretty good at offloading to helper threads these days

#

I'm hoping the price of the 13900 isnt too high, but I assume since the 12900 was like 599, that they're going to charge at least 599 if not 649 for it

#

I got my 9900 on sale for like 430, otherwise I think they were normally going for 499

umbral moss
#

the switching losses become bonkers no matter what your transistor node size is

#

5 GHz is the hard limit, getting over 5 requires very special conditions and/or sub-ambient cooling

#

it's why intel abandoned netburst, their theoretical model showed they could take netburst up to some shit like 8GHz before they needed to change uarch

#

but physics was like

odd sand

Which is why I'm kinda sus on them talking about 5.5 5.8 even 6.0 ghz turbo
