good quality stuff tho

my total for kb and m are like 44$

Redragon K617 and Deathadder v2

agile roost
#

those dell mice from back in grade school could survive a nuclear fallout

#

i swear

sly elk
#

yea, also, dell had a reputation to uphold back then

#

competition was fierce and they were trying to keep that up

sly elk
#

today, they could mail shit in a box and they wouldn't lose their customers

sly walrus
#

can't lose what you don't have

sly elk
#

lol

#

idk, I think Dell has a stronger cult than Apple does

#

which is sad and hilarious because Dell doesn't really even do R&D

#

they just take other companies' things and sell them

#

ok that's majorly wrong but

#

they don't make their own OS, they don't make their own chipsets, they barely 'design' any hardware and when they do it's horrible and overcomplicated

#

(they do make a few nice laptops though)

umbral moss
#

then it would unfuck itself

sly elk
#

lol

#

yea Dell continuously reinforces my shit opinion of them

#

we spent >$50k on a server from them and I had the opportunity to poke around at it (including the web-based management UI)

#

ITS SO BAD

#

like i wasn't expecting web 3.0

#

but this wasn't even web 1.0

#

fuck, I think the management page had one of these on it

Then everyone that felt the need to cover their page in like 7 separate frames

#

Eh, image maps were useful and cool. Both frames and image maps as a function are still in use today by other means.

#

IE: Top-tethered menu divs, just menus in general operate like image maps, just with more advanced HTML rendering

#

48MB ram was kinda an odd configuration wasn't it. Most ppl would go for 32 or 64

#

Although I think my parents had a mac with 24 bc it came with 16 and they bought another 8

#

Remember, gotta do it at a 45 degree angle and slide it into place /s

Mitsubishi should be the dominant Japanese car producer. It was backed by a large parent company, it didn’t come to producing vehicles late in the game, and it produced good, dependable cars. Yet Mitsubishi Motors is essentially owned by one of those competitors it should have beaten – Nissan |and is being reduced to little more than a brand nam...

Nutscrape was the chad browser for ages

sly elk
#

yeaaa

#

iirc one of the last versions of netscape navigator was basically reskinned firefox

#

hmm no it was

#

The Mozilla Application Suite (originally known as Mozilla, marketed as the Mozilla Suite) is a discontinued cross-platform integrated Internet suite. Its development was initiated by Netscape Communications Corporation, before their acquisition by AOL. It was based on the source code of Netscape Communicator. The development was spearheaded by ...

#

THAT.

umbral moss
sly elk
#

-yawn- meanwhile I'm chatting to you from a firefox window

umbral moss
#

firefox pogianger

sly elk
#

mhmm

#

it had irc and ftp and a debugger that most modern debuggers are styled after

outer sand
#

been a while since I used firefox xD

#

used to be the bomb back then

umbral moss
#

firefox is still better than chrome

#

chrome is IE6 for 2022

outer sand
#

I have google admin, lol

#

feel like it's a waste if I don't use chrome

umbral moss
#

chrome's problem is that it's designed to feed google as much data as possible about you

#

if you absolutely want the chromium security upgrades, use edge

outer sand
#

and I use google service regularly, like sheet/word/ppt

umbral moss
#

that's not even a shitpost, edge is chromium if google gave a shit about it

outer sand

umbral moss
#

aren't meltdown/spectre indirect attacks that can pull data from memory addresses that aren't exploited?

#

I don't know if an ISA update will get rid of it, it's like trying to engineer out airgap attacks

#

but you'd have to add hardware cache just to put the table

#

which is still an exploit avenue

#

I thought the more obscure form of spectre was related to rowhammer

#

and it could extract memory by inferring the bit data

#

yeah, but I thought that was how the second spectre exploit worked

#

as far as I understood spectre 2, it was a similar implicit data extraction

#

I mean, x86-64 is also a hacky shitty solution that isn't proper haha

#

"shit, we need more registers" "just glue them on and make them accessible with 64-bit tags"

#

wasn't NX being exploited for one of these data breach attacks?

#

I know

#

I thought there was an attack vector that used the NX bit as its entry point

#

isn't NX also on the hardware side?

#

just add a qubit reference clock so it can speculate in the background

#

they're all defacto defective because they're running x86

#

garbage ISA from 40 years ago

#

oh nah, I'm not an ARM shill like apple

#

it's more that nobody has designed a modernized, hardened ISA and uarch yet

#

they're all like "yeah, it sucks, but qubits doe"

#

as if quantum computers won't have a million extremely tiresome exploit vectors

#

most things can be solved with hardware, but not software

#

software covers up bad hardware sins with hacky workarounds, but in the end the hardware needs to actually work

boreal surge
#

So why are we going over branch prediction exploits here again?

#

Well the other end of the spectrum is having the technological development speed of the US government

boreal surge
#

And frankly in computer world all code you didn’t make yourself is untrusted. Goes back to the so much compute power wasted on people being assholes bit.

late basalt
#

Tbf, extremophilic tech would take a lot longer to develop precisely because of the conditions they’re going to be working in, as well as the (lack of) ease of testing in said conditions

boreal surge
#

To be fair, I was referring to stuff like government tax systems and what not, I understand the legit need to use older systems for niche applications simply cause they need to be tested to sam hell and back and that’s expensive and timeconsuming

late basalt
#

It’s not just that either

#

Some of them are coded for that OS platform

#

And odds are the guy that wrote it’s fucking dead or disappeared so it cant be updated haha

boreal surge
#

Anyone gonna tow that dumpster fire?

sly elk
#

that is no longer necessarily true

#

iirc insight uses something newer

#

OH

#

that's what I meant

#

the helicopter tho

#

i meant the helicopter but thought insight was. nah that's called something else. my bad. XD

#

gov software jobs don't pay that well :S

umbral moss
#

government jobs don't pay that well unless you're a defense contractor pogianger

#

#

taste all that pork

sly elk
#

definitely not

umbral moss
#

we've lost so many engineers to defense contractors because they pay twice our engineer salary for spud-level assembly jobs

#

just can't compete with these fuckin contractors having effectively infinite money

sly elk
#

?

#

assembly?

#

but not software?

umbral moss
#

yeah, optical assembly positions going for $100k+ a year

#

their engineer positions get paid like google software engineers

sly elk
#

wut

#

wut?!

#

I am definitely not getting paid like a google software engineer ;_;

umbral moss
sly elk
#

otoh i refuse to work on uh, things that shoot things

umbral moss
#

boeing's optical division pays so fucking much

#

I had three engineers fuck off for boeing because they got paid three times as much for half as much responsibility

sly elk
#

jlkfjsdak;ljafsdk;lhjadsiughaewruighaiuelhergkulhkjcfvniurthuoraethaugfhnisualfhiudfhsaiuladhfgaidfguhdfgiuhladfg

umbral moss
#

just impossible to compete with these bastards

sly elk
#

sorry was pounding my head into my keyboard

umbral moss
#

based

#

keep in mind that what I do is specialized enough to get paid significantly more than usual

#

if I wanted to work for ASML as a process/integration engineer they'd be paying me $300k

sly elk
#

and the dudes you're talking about?

#

they're working on optical software?

umbral moss
#

(ASML being the only company on this blighted hellscape that makes the EUV systems intel and TSMC are using)

sly elk
#

image recognition stuff? 😄

umbral moss
#

optical hardware/systems

#

laser systems

sly elk
#

yea I know about ASML

umbral moss
#

I visited their home office in the netherlands

#

nice people, but very smug because they're phd's

umbral moss
#

ye

#

they wanted to make a visible spectrum-based dicing system to try to make a lower cost dicer since the optics don't need to be as high polish and the coatings don't need to be specially overengineered for durability

#

as your photon energy goes up the coatings start getting chewed up mad fast

boreal surge
#

Well you could also work for a company that inadvertently promotes extremism cause society is naturally bullshit.

umbral moss
#

inadvertently

#

nah, it's deliberate

#

outrage generates clicks and engagement

#

anyone who says that the algorithm works in mysterious ways is bullshitting you

#

they know exactly why it does what it does and how it works

boreal surge
#

Well it’s two sides of the same coin

umbral moss
#

material science still hasn't really caught up to these insanely high photon energies

boreal surge
#

You can either use a megaphone to start up extremism or warn people there’s a fire

umbral moss
#

wild-ass znsn optics and shit

#

I was reading papers on the tin plasma generation technique back in 2005

#

the problem wasn't the technique, it works great

#

the problem is that it requires a lot of pulse timing circuitry and the photon energy just murders everything in its way

#

yeah

#

well, "absorbs"

#

the photons just don't have a re-emission with low loss characteristic because the energy is so fucking high it ionizes whatever it hits

#

so you inevitably lose some energy

#

that's the nature of how the photons are generated though

#

it's based on the tin plasma's surface area

#

yeah, you need a twin pulse setup

#

pulse 1 ionizes the plasma and pulse 2 generates the EUV stimulated emission

#

you need some dumb shit like an eighth level excitation to get EUV out of tin

odd sand
#

I understand some of these words

umbral moss
#

yeah

umbral moss
odd sand
#

If it works, it works.

umbral moss
#

EUV doesn't work though lmao

#

the photons are so energetic they destroy the optics in the EUV generation chamber extremely quickly

#

it's like 1500 hours between maint windows because of how fast the photons destroy all the optics

#

well, you want higher PRF to make the line go brrr

#

more power probably means higher PRF

#

you want to be able to move those lines at higher speed with the same hole spacing

#

yeah, that's all shot noise

#

your photon density isn't there because of how the photons are generated

#

more power would probably improve that

#

in a lower harmonic source like UV or even DUV, you get a pretty high photon density so your shot noise isn't that bad outside the normal instability from your galvo

#

yeah I have a nintendo switch in the other hdmi port i can try push comes to shove

#

#

i think it's fine now unless the hdmi bridge chip on the gpu was failing which i doubt

#

I'm just going to write it off as a shitty cable for the moment

#

would think failure in that would mess up the hdcp handshake but logic

#

I can't reproduce it at the moment

unless i revert to the old cable

likely

it was only on the lower half but not perfectly lower half like an internal connection issue

vertical line static

modest moss

I dunno, ice definitely didn't get banned and he said didn't delete them himself iirc

umbral moss
#

you use the badmin tools to remove a banned user's messages, because there's a reason they got banned haha

modest moss
#

Maybe there's a custom client that purges when you leave? Idk

umbral moss
#

maybe better discord does that?

paper tusk
#

usually when i do that audit says x number of messages removed

umbral moss

seems like a fairly invasive use of the discord API though

modest moss

It will remain a mystery because I cba to ask a mod

deep sapphire

yeah needs more cheddar sauce

sly elk

the local one had a C food department score and tried to hide it behind an umbrella lmao

#

I remember seeing this on reddit lmao

though I agree their roast beef is da shit

sly elk

they used to have one sandwich that you would dip in sauce

ohhh they still have it

hell yea

deep sapphire

okay that made me laugh

sly elk

this looks yummy too

deep sapphire

fuuuuck how late is arby's open

i'm surprised theu don't have pastrami

they probably did at some point in time

sly elk

it doesn't look as good as it tastes

pastrami is delicious so I would probably eat the shit out of that

sly elk

yea i guess weinerschnitzel is more of a west coast thing. they're not everywhere but i've seen lots in LA and vegas, and there's a few up north too

#

they're mostly old A frame buildings with a drive through in the middle

but there are some newer ones

deep sapphire

Denny's kinda did that too

sly elk

maybe some upper exec wanted them gone

I HATE DENNYS for what they did here

deep sapphire

they always had that cool 1950s diner theme and then they all turned into something super basic and lame

sly elk
#

i mean i still eat them because they're cheap and good XD

yea that drives me crazy because california had a lot of funky sambos places

dennys bought almost all of them and ruined every last one

one thing I find interesting is that tv shows were FILMED LIVE

deep sapphire

haha yeah, I suppose it was cheaper to do it that way

#

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Toaster I always loved this little piece of technology

The NewTek Video Toaster is a combination of hardware and software for the editing and production of NTSC standard-definition video. The plug-in expansion card initially worked with the Amiga 2000 computer and provides a number of BNC connectors on the exposed rear edge that provide connectivity to common analog video sources like VHS VCRs. The ...

haha that is sick

ya know

those amiga video toaster things were used on public access tv around here FOREVER

#

i think the town I grew up in used one for their cable tv slideshow channel until like 2008 or so

deep sapphire

hahaha yeah I read about how common they are still in circulation

sly elk

and it was funny because once on a blue moon it'd crash

and restart and you';d just see it sitting on the workbench screen

#

something like that i think

deep sapphire

hahahaha

sly elk

they eventually replaced it with a windows machine

i can't remember if that ever BSOD'd but I hope it did

I’m going to be flying to my mom’s place for a couple months and want to take my gaming rig with me. Should be okay if I take out all the parts and put it in my carryon while I put the chassis in my suitcase?

royal forge
#

this is from a friend's experience

#

but

#

there's one of those "strap bags" you can use to transport the whole case

deep sapphire

as long as you put everything in an ESD bag but you might be better off shipping it

royal forge

as a carry on

#

i feel shipping is dangerous

#

if you have the luggage space

#

why not wrap it in bubble wrap (but remove the GPU)

deep sapphire
#

shipping is fine if you put ESD safe packing inside of it

#

people buy custom PCs online all the time, thats how they get shipped

royal forge

ye. but, ya know that feeling of not trusting nobody

candid finch

I don’t know if the strap bags would work because my chassis is pretty damn big and might not be allowed as a carryon

royal forge

good luck bud

but i don't think that you need to remove the mobo

#

maybe just the CPU cooler

since it's probably a big boi so could snap off

The mobo would be quite secure

inside the case

#

i didn't take my PC on a flight, but I drove it about 5 hours.
Removed the GPU
disconnected the cables
removed the cooler

There are 3 common panel types: TN (fast refresh, low color accuracy) IPS (low refresh, high color accuracy) VA (mix of both)

That said, there are higher end IPS panels that still manage quite good refresh rates and GTG

27" is the most common size these days

So I should go with TN panels for fast refresh when it comes to gaming?
