sick edge
#

Cause they do say significant cost, but also, that thing costs how much? And what is the comparison of that cost to elongate its lifespan of operating time I suppose?

#

My ongoing theoretical rebuttal to that post? They also knew they had a deadline and couldn't think of a proper solution for this in development and prelaunch.

#

I understand minimizing points of failure, but at that point, it's the idea that maintenance won't run you forever, but will create a padding to wearing over time.

#

Well.. strike that, if I"M to believe the InSight is in the same line as what kyan posted, then these thigns are designed to last a certain amount of operating time in the first place?.. alright.

#

Sure, toss precious rare metals up there as space litter I guess. O~O

sly elk
#

lol usually they're made to last a lot longer than the mission life

#

also, yes there are varying grades of 'disposable'

#

truth is, idk exactly why they didn't try some sort of mitigation system, but they probably did research that extensively at some point and decide it wasn't worth it

#

there are other things you need to consider when it comes to space vehicle lifetime - one of the bigger ones is radiation

#

the other, in the case of mars, is probably environmental damage from wind storms, direct sunlight, etc

#

i would not be surprised if they made analysis guessing how long the solar panels would work until they were caked in dust and then decided the computer won't last much longer and it wasn't worth installing cleaning equipment

jaunty light
#

Weaklings

#

Time to deploy cleaning drones

#

Then the cleaning drones need cleaning drones of their own

sick edge
#

Actually You ever really need2 or 3. =P

#

One that cleans and one that cleans who cleans and they sitch off

jaunty light
#

No no, we are keeping nasa and government tradition

#

Propose solution and purposely leave out some problems.
Secure funding.
Use funding.
Bring up totally new problems, need more funding!
Profit

sick edge
#

Also Nasa funding has only ever been getting lower though...

umbral moss
#

if they funded nasa like it was part of the military we'd have dyson spheres

outer sand
#

how to diagnose what's wrong with my monitor? It won't turn on for like 30 secs after I turned on my Comp now for some reason, whenever I press the monitor power button, It turned on, but It turned off again till things stabilise

sly elk
#

making any kinda mechanism to clean the solar panels introduces more weight, more things to test, more things to develop. it increases costs and again, they probably already did a pretty intense amount of analysis showing that the solar panels would generate power about as long as the rest of the vehicle would function acceptably anyway

umbral moss
#

yeah, even if they did some weird ultrasonic cleaning thing like a camera sensor, the dust is still contaminating all the other mechanical joints and interfaces

#

so even if the panels maintained 90% capacity after 2x mission time, the rest of the thing is probably clogged to shit with dust

sly elk
#

when I was looking at a stack overflow thing, or a reddit thing, about this subject earlier, there were 2 nasa studies mentioned about various things they've tried in experiments

#

that subject comes up a lot 🙂

#

admittedly, if they care enough, they just use an RTG

umbral moss
#

RTG will help with power generation, but not with physical degradation

#

you're not worried about the panels at some point, just the fact the thing is accumulating dust and getting scoured by windstorms

sly elk
#

yep ^^

#

and the computers getting fried from radiation, harnesses getting fried by uv exposure, wind, dust, etc screwing up sensors

outer sand
#

bought it 2012, it's 23 inch LCD @deep sapphire

#

strangely It starting to act weirdly after I installed that USB3 PCI card

I wouldve asked them for compensation xD

potent arrow
#

deep sapphire
#

yeah Makita has a 36v platform where you can use 2 18v batteries in some tools

potent arrow
#

what the fuck

#

that would be so heavy

deep sapphire
deep sapphire
#

9" angle grinder with 2 batteries

#

LOL fuck that

potent arrow
#

OK

#

See I would understand that

#

but a sawzall???

#

What are you cutting? sewer line??

deep sapphire
#

sawzall is a 2 handed tool so probably isnt too bad

#

get a diablo recip blade on there

#

gg

#

probably costs 30 dollars a blade

#

rofl

potent arrow
#

Diablo is so good

deep sapphire
#

20 dollars I was close!

potent arrow
#

I persoanlly use defuck contractor blades on my sawzall

#

cuz its cheap as shit

deep sapphire
#

DeWalt blades are kinda meh, they make good drill bits though

#

hard to beat Diablo when it comes to blades for sure

#

pretty much the gold standard

hard drift
potent arrow
#

Yeah but dewalt contractor blades cost me 20$ CAD per pack of 5

#

which is a fucking steal

deep sapphire
#

whats with that presumably expensive OEM shroud

hard drift
deep sapphire
#

speaking of terrible blades

#

Milwaukee knife blades suck

#

they are sharp as fuck the first 2 times you use them

#

and then they cant cut a fuckin thing

hard drift
#

That’s 2000 series founders shroud

potent arrow
#

Imagien not carrying a real knife

deep sapphire
#

why when I have the GOAT fastback

deep sapphire
#

for a basically sub 100 dollar card

#

whats the point

#

I dont even know anymore

#

I refuse to buy new PC parts until prices come down

hard drift
#

Probably leftovers from the shit generation

#

Given how bad 2000 series was and fucked up new gen for pricing lol

deep sapphire
hard drift
#

I mean it was bad given pricing lol

deep sapphire
#

I think nvidia expected ray tracing to be a bigger thing than it was

#

I'll agree with that, it was poor value

#

specially when compared to the 10 series

#

the 1080Ti was a fuckin legendary bargain

hard drift
#

The 2080ti was basically 3080ti/3090 pricing

deep sapphire
#

649.99 USD for something that went neck and neck with the 2080 lmao

hard drift
#

Yeah, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they have leftover founders shrouds

#

And that’s why the 1630 looks like that

modest moss
#

If a 1630 is actually worse than a 1650 just get a fucking 5600g or something

#

Pointless

hard drift
#

Yeah, i really hope it just is a rumor

#

Otherwise it’s ewaste smh

umbral moss
#

I would expect the 40 series to be the first time you could reasonably think to turn raytracing on

outer sand
#

so the upcoming ge force 4000 series will requires more watt compared to the 3000?

#

wondering if i should just wait till came out till I choose the parts I want to upgrade including the PSU

hard drift
#

Most people unless going for super high end could do just fine with 750-850w psu

outer sand
#

something that can play the upcoming SF6 and play 60-100 FPS 1080p FFXIV with the upcoming updated graphic probably

#

so it's not that high?

hard drift
#

650-750w

#

That’s anything really from current stuff included

deep sapphire
#

FFXIV is forever handicapped by a CPU overhead issue

#

So if your processor sucks I would look at that first

hard drift
#

It takes almost nothing to run ffxiv at that framerate for 1080 and sf6 won’t be much more than likely since it’s capped at 60 anyways (most likely)

umbral moss
#

yeah, XIV is pretty much CPU onry

#

isn't it still only one thread after all these years?

modest moss
#

Shit I get 75 fps most places in xiv with a 4690k and gtx 1080 at 1080p

#

Could get more but I just cap it at 75 because 75hz monitor

outer sand
#

yeah currently, this is what I'm aiming for, but I probably wait till the new increased official spec req for XIV

#

ignore the scuffed price 😹

#

prefer nvidia, so probably looking for it's equivalent

hard drift
#

A 3060 will still be fine more than likely

#

Also I’d avoid the h510 unless it’s the flow model because airflow sucks for the nzxt cases

outer sand
#

ah no, I probably won't change case

#

unless it's needed?

#

any old mid tower should be ok right?

#

I thought all mid tower is like one size fits all

hard drift
#

Yes but airflow

outer sand
hard drift
#

Still more airflow than an h510

outer sand
#

have no idea about airflow, I just put more smaller fan in 😹

hard drift
#

Won’t matter when it’s a solid panel

outer sand
#

yeah that looks suffocating

hard drift
#

The flow is a lot better

#

preferably with a PSU that is not quite up to the job

umbral moss
#

furmark is a good way to go

#

it's just designed to blow the VRMs up

sly elk
#

idk

umbral moss
#

if the vrms eat shit from being pushed past their thermal design envelope?

#

yeah, probably

sly elk
#

I would say

#

in a cold room

#

run furmark for like 30 mins

#

then turn the computer off all the way

#

then once it's cooled off, fire it up again

#

furmark for 30 mins, then turn it off again

#

What is the process "Desktop Window Manager" exactly and why does it take up so much memory (more than 2GB on my laptop)? Can I just end the process or at least refresh it somewhat so it wouldn't take up so much?

wide hill
#

reboot your computer is a good way to end the process

#

apparently, most "fixes" to this is doing windows updates

#

and when you end the process, it does start up automatically again

serene radish
#

thanks

wide hill
#

try checking windows updates for permanent solutions

potent arrow
#

Restarting your computer is the better idea : P

#

It's good to do that often anyways

serene radish
#

I update usually twice a week and updated yesterday and it's been like this for a while

wide hill
#

yeah, that's weird

#

mine only takes like 60mb

potent arrow
#

Windows updates, and chipset driver updates would be what I would do

#

DWM is Intel's way of hardware accelrating windows explorer

#

Iirc

#

So performing updates would remedy the issue, if they've patched it

#

Reading up on it, it's exactly that.

#

Common memory leak that was never patched tdespair

wide hill
#

if you use lenovo, check vantage, i think they also do add updates that windows updates don't

Going back a year

Lenovo Update assist utility is better iirc

#

Sorry thaun if it seems like I'm trying to undermine you @_@

wide hill
#

i mean, as long as it is a better tool, i only knew of vantage other than that

potent arrow
#

I have a love and hate relationship with vantage

#

Also updating twice a week is not enough imo, but that's because working in IT I've gotten annoyed at how many problems are solved by our users more frequently shutting down their computers

wide hill
#

oh god, you made me check vantage now. and i already got 2 updates

I can be smart, but I was writing directly into the folder that was supposed to be a database but really it was just the LFS folder

wide hill
#

uhuh

potent arrow
wide hill
#

you know what the worst part about webdev, teachers learning people to use putty to ssh into servers and write the site directly trough putty

#

oh, and i think they were writing php

potent arrow
#

Why write though putty

#

Why not just shove it to git

#

And clone

wide hill
#

too much to learn at the same time i would assume, it was supposed to be a small course of creating a LAMP server

#

it was probably also a class that has never touched linux

#

so you know what that means?

#

its nano learning time

#

when i tried to help someone on issues, it would be so bad, cause you could only use your arrows to navigate, and i had to point to where they should put their cursor on, and write what it had to write

Oh YT comments. Guy trying to say a Q6600 w/8800GS and 4gb ram was a "high end gaming system" in 2008. Also while claiming he spent only $500 on it. (That CPU part alone is listed on Ark for 530)

#

Also the IPC on that gen was terrible, so you would be replacing it within 3 years, meanwhile 2nd or 3rd gen Core i-series easily gave you more than 5 years. (Discussion was about whether PCs today were a better or worse value/cost compared to years ago)

If we set aside the insane GPU price surge the last 2 years, you can get a passable PC for dirt cheap

Or could get like a 1660 super instead for $250. That's going to get you 1080p @ 90-120fps+ depending on the game. A 2008 system was playing most stuff at like 30-60fps

sly elk
#

yea the 1660 argument is funny because there's still people here talking about how the 3080 is gutless x

modest moss
#

He's right, you're wrong.

odd sand
#

I don't know exactly how the housing is stored on the backend, but as Sadlynn was referencing in a less than diplomatic way: YoshiP the lead game director for FF14 has talked about on multiple occasions how the poorly written 1.0 game code from before the re-launch has caused them lots of headaches and made certain things "not possible" due to how many things it touches in the game code.

#

They had outsourced a lot of the game development for FF14 1.0 and it was very poorly done, so while ARR was able to salvage the game, a lot of the underlying code is still impossible to work with short of completely rewriting the entire client from scratch.

#

It's a similar idea to how Blizzard stated they were unable to change the default bag size in WoW due to how the code was written. So the 2nd thru 5th bags grew ever larger over the expansions, but your "1st bag" was always the same 24 slots or w/e

#

So it's entirely possible the housing system has some fucky DB schema where the writes cause log-scaling issues and prevent caching or slow it down. I forget exactly what the term is called. But you try to design your tables in a such a way that they don't cause exponential i/o problems

odd sand
sly elk

What the company says: we rebuilt it from the ground up
What they actually mean: we took the codebase and put a new UI on it

#

Every MMO has this problem tbh, either because its ancient or because they dont know what theyre soing (cough korean companies, new world)

#

For years RS3 had a broken friend chat system where you had to login to OSRS to manage your FC cuz it didnt work in RS3

#

Plus the clan system had to be rewritten from scratch which took years

odd sand
#

To be fair, rebuild means you are working with a base of some sort, not "rewrote from scratch". They still put in 18 months of redevelopment working insane hours so its not like they were trying to still cut corners at that point

sly elk
#

naw what ya do is make the MMO client in adobe flash 😄

odd sand
#

How did that Sorento owner manage oil changes every 3k miles if they were driving to California and back? It's a 2000mi trip, so that would mean either getting an oil change each way, or after 4k mi round trip. Also how bad of an engine did those have to shit out consistently after 67k all highway miles?

sly elk
#

they could stop halfway

#

but, I'd be surprised if they were changing at 3k

#

oh geez they say it averages out to 3k., nevermind my nonsense 😄

#

almost every car I owned suggested 3k for 'heavy duty' use only (primarily city driving)

odd sand
#

They sound OCD given they kept an immaculate set of records, including all gas receipts.

sly elk
#

yeeeah

#

and despite that, went through 9 engines

odd sand
#

So I actually wouldn't be surprised if they had some specific Kia dealerships along the way they would schedule oil changes for.

#

Then again, I suppose they wanted to make absolutely sure they would honor the replacement of the engines

#

The weirder thing is the dealer not having newer motors to swap in instead of faulty new old stock lol

sly elk
#

I get the impression the motor design itself is defective

#

and there is no solution

#

the funny part to me is they've been defective for over a decade now

odd sand
#

And then they traded it in for a Saturn Vue Redline AWD Suv that gets 23mpg highway haha

sly elk
#

one of my coworkers at my internship in 2013 had a brand new sonata... then the engine caught on fire

#

the part I thought was insane was that they replaced the car with another sonata

odd sand
#

Supposedly it was a workmanship issue and the motor design itself was fine.

#

And the newer versions of the same motor have been fine

sly elk
#

then i really don't know

#

the other thing i find surprising is that they had replacement motors in stock every time

#

from what I remember of that reddit thread, they commonly are a week to a month wait

#

maybe they had a saturn before

#

idk why some people buy what they buy lol

odd sand
#

I mean, it sounds like they went to the same dealership and they knew they had the 10yr warranty, so probably after the 2nd motor replacement and regular oil changes, they knew to have a motor onhand once a year for them LOL

#

Also to buy a 23mpg suv in 2022 with these gas prices...

i've always lived in california and almost every car here is a honda, toyota, or subaru.. so I have never felt the desire to have one. so I make bad financial decisions time and time again when it comes to cars.

  • Phanteks Evolv Shift XT

I know the Meshilicious is everyone's default choice, but to me it's kinda bland over the other two. I've broken it down among the three but I still can't decide because of certain things;

  • The Tower 100 and SSUD can use ATX PSUs, meaning that I don't have to buy a new one, but the Phanteks needs an SFX PSU
  • The Tower 100 has the issue where it can only take 120mm Rads, or air cooling for the CPU. It also seems like the airflow is a little low? But overall cost is lowest for this case (since smallest cooler and no need for a new PSU)
  • The Phanteks seems like it has good airflow especially in AIO mode, takes a 240mm Rad and ties with the SSUD (case costs less, but requires a PSU that the SSUD doesn't) while also looking better

3080 in an ITX case = Hot boi

All the other ATX cases that are smaller than mine while being decent quality are either too long (the big issue with my desk) or straight tempered class everywhere (which would be worse than the Meshilicious or Evolv Shift XT).

There are some things which work less well at that framerate but it's far from broken

14 used to be shit tier buggy at triple digit fps but it was soft fixed by capping the polling rate of physics (so you dont fall through the world) so the side effect of animations being dumb. not a very good fix but this is typical se development quality

iirc crash remaster is a glorified unity port so blame lazy programming

elder scrolls is just bethesda not caring since havoc was from the era where 75hz was the best it got (and usually is capped to 60hz physics polling intended to be tied to display rate)
