My ongoing theoretical rebuttal to that post? They also knew they had a deadline and couldn't think of a proper solution for this in development and prelaunch.
I understand minimizing points of failure, but at that point, it's the idea that maintenance won't run you forever, but will create a padding to wearing over time.
Well.. strike that, if I"M to believe the InSight is in the same line as what kyan posted, then these thigns are designed to last a certain amount of operating time in the first place?.. alright.
Sure, toss precious rare metals up there as space litter I guess. O~O
lol usually they're made to last a lot longer than the mission life
also, yes there are varying grades of 'disposable'
truth is, idk exactly why they didn't try some sort of mitigation system, but they probably did research that extensively at some point and decide it wasn't worth it
there are other things you need to consider when it comes to space vehicle lifetime - one of the bigger ones is radiation
the other, in the case of mars, is probably environmental damage from wind storms, direct sunlight, etc
i would not be surprised if they made analysis guessing how long the solar panels would work until they were caked in dust and then decided the computer won't last much longer and it wasn't worth installing cleaning equipment
Weaklings
Time to deploy cleaning drones
Then the cleaning drones need cleaning drones of their own
Actually You ever really need2 or 3. =P
One that cleans and one that cleans who cleans and they sitch off
No no, we are keeping nasa and government tradition
Propose solution and purposely leave out some problems.
Secure funding.
Use funding.
Bring up totally new problems, need more funding!
Profit
Now SpaceX can do that as a contractor for Nasa
Also Nasa funding has only ever been getting lower though...
if they funded nasa like it was part of the military we'd have dyson spheres
how to diagnose what's wrong with my monitor? It won't turn on for like 30 secs after I turned on my Comp now for some reason, whenever I press the monitor power button, It turned on, but It turned off again till things stabilise
making any kinda mechanism to clean the solar panels introduces more weight, more things to test, more things to develop. it increases costs and again, they probably already did a pretty intense amount of analysis showing that the solar panels would generate power about as long as the rest of the vehicle would function acceptably anyway
yeah, even if they did some weird ultrasonic cleaning thing like a camera sensor, the dust is still contaminating all the other mechanical joints and interfaces
so even if the panels maintained 90% capacity after 2x mission time, the rest of the thing is probably clogged to shit with dust
when I was looking at a stack overflow thing, or a reddit thing, about this subject earlier, there were 2 nasa studies mentioned about various things they've tried in experiments
that subject comes up a lot 🙂
admittedly, if they care enough, they just use an RTG
A radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG, RITEG) is a type of nuclear battery that uses an array of thermocouples to convert the heat released by the decay of a suitable radioactive material into electricity by the Seebeck effect. This type of generator has no moving parts.
RTGs have been used as power sources in satellites, space probes, an...
RTG will help with power generation, but not with physical degradation
you're not worried about the panels at some point, just the fact the thing is accumulating dust and getting scoured by windstorms
yep ^^
and the computers getting fried from radiation, harnesses getting fried by uv exposure, wind, dust, etc screwing up sensors
How old is it
bought it 2012, it's 23 inch LCD @deep sapphire
strangely It starting to act weirdly after I installed that USB3 PCI card
I can still use it though, but I have to wait till the startup process completed, I have quite a bit of programs I setup to be turned on on my startup using my task scheduler
I feel like this is a direct attack on @potent arrow
stfu
backlight is probably going bad
You don't mean that sarah
take a flash light up to it closely when you think it isnt turning on and see if you can see a picture
I'll do that next startup, ty ty
np
Klein
good choice
Home Depot lied to me, they said they had 29 of the new milwaukee tumblers in stock, I ordered for pick up and they cancelled it saying they had none in stock

wth
right, like wtf
I wouldve asked them for compensation xD
"we got some Yeti's in stock"
"ITS NOT GOOD ENOUGH"
Go full karen
Hanken
is that a double battery sawzall
yeah Makita has a 36v platform where you can use 2 18v batteries in some tools
9" angle grinder with 2 batteries
LOL fuck that
OK
See I would understand that
but a sawzall???
What are you cutting? sewer line??
sawzall is a 2 handed tool so probably isnt too bad
get a diablo recip blade on there

probably costs 30 dollars a blade
rofl
Diablo is so good
20 dollars I was close!
DeWalt blades are kinda meh, they make good drill bits though
hard to beat Diablo when it comes to blades for sure
pretty much the gold standard
Hey hank, look who’s possibly releasing new ewaste
https://videocardz.com/newz/nvidia-preparing-geforce-gtx-1630-graphics-card-its-first-gtx-x30-model
Yeah but dewalt contractor blades cost me 20$ CAD per pack of 5
which is a fucking steal
whats with that presumably expensive OEM shroud
That’s not oem hank
speaking of terrible blades
Milwaukee knife blades suck
they are sharp as fuck the first 2 times you use them
and then they cant cut a fuckin thing

That’s 2000 series founders shroud
Imagien not carrying a real knife
yeah but its still made of aluminum
for a basically sub 100 dollar card
whats the point
I dont even know anymore
I refuse to buy new PC parts until prices come down
Probably leftovers from the shit generation
Given how bad 2000 series was and fucked up new gen for pricing lol
it wasnt bad it was just underwhelming for general raster rendering performance
I mean it was bad given pricing lol
I think nvidia expected ray tracing to be a bigger thing than it was
I'll agree with that, it was poor value
specially when compared to the 10 series
the 1080Ti was a fuckin legendary bargain
The 2080ti was basically 3080ti/3090 pricing
649.99 USD for something that went neck and neck with the 2080 lmao
Yeah, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they have leftover founders shrouds
And that’s why the 1630 looks like that
If a 1630 is actually worse than a 1650 just get a fucking 5600g or something
Pointless
oh nah, raytracing is absolutely going to be The Future, but it's so computationally expensive it's just going to take a while for GPUs to catch up
I would expect the 40 series to be the first time you could reasonably think to turn raytracing on
so the upcoming ge force 4000 series will requires more watt compared to the 3000?
wondering if i should just wait till came out till I choose the parts I want to upgrade including the PSU
What class gpu are you looking at
Most people unless going for super high end could do just fine with 750-850w psu
something that can play the upcoming SF6 and play 60-100 FPS 1080p FFXIV with the upcoming updated graphic probably
so it's not that high?
FFXIV is forever handicapped by a CPU overhead issue
So if your processor sucks I would look at that first
It takes almost nothing to run ffxiv at that framerate for 1080 and sf6 won’t be much more than likely since it’s capped at 60 anyways (most likely)
yeah, XIV is pretty much CPU onry
isn't it still only one thread after all these years?
Shit I get 75 fps most places in xiv with a 4690k and gtx 1080 at 1080p
Could get more but I just cap it at 75 because 75hz monitor
yeah currently, this is what I'm aiming for, but I probably wait till the new increased official spec req for XIV
ignore the scuffed price 😹
prefer nvidia, so probably looking for it's equivalent
A 3060 will still be fine more than likely
Also I’d avoid the h510 unless it’s the flow model because airflow sucks for the nzxt cases
ah no, I probably won't change case
unless it's needed?
any old mid tower should be ok right?
I thought all mid tower is like one size fits all
Yes but airflow
I use this old one https://youtu.be/FhJ0LSaaD_4

Still more airflow than an h510
have no idea about airflow, I just put more smaller fan in 😹
Won’t matter when it’s a solid panel

The NZXT H510 case is famous for its extremely clean look, which made it extremely popular, but it was viewed as having poor airflow. NZXT apparently fixes that with the H510 Flow; let's find out!

yeah that looks suffocating
The flow is a lot better
yea the Lian Li O11D was the death of NZXT lol
furmark
10 Year wtf
back when evga used to make good products and honor warranties
I can think of natural and dumb ways
for example, put it in an nzxt case and overclock it aggressively
preferably with a PSU that is not quite up to the job
idk
if the vrms eat shit from being pushed past their thermal design envelope?
yeah, probably
I would say
in a cold room
run furmark for like 30 mins
then turn the computer off all the way
then once it's cooled off, fire it up again
furmark for 30 mins, then turn it off again
i mean
it's an evga gpu
evga gpus tend not to die, their motherboards...
poggin
can't wait for a card to finally dethrone my titan
With only triple the power consumption
based
my next PC has a dedicated two-row 3x140 rad set aside just for the GPU though
so I'm not worried about heat dissipation
I have a bunch of extra rads and pumps
I bought them two years ago when I thought I was going to use the coronacation time to build a new computer case
until I found out that my job didn't end when covid hit
you think anykne would trade their 3080 noctua for an evga 3080?
do people even like Noctua brown
laughs in XIVLauncher
third party tool
shhh
What is the process "Desktop Window Manager" exactly and why does it take up so much memory (more than 2GB on my laptop)? Can I just end the process or at least refresh it somewhat so it wouldn't take up so much?
reboot your computer is a good way to end the process
apparently, most "fixes" to this is doing windows updates
and when you end the process, it does start up automatically again
Okay so I can terminate the process and I won't crash or something, I rather do that than restart
thanks
try checking windows updates for permanent solutions
I update usually twice a week and updated yesterday and it's been like this for a while
Windows updates, and chipset driver updates would be what I would do
DWM is Intel's way of hardware accelrating windows explorer
Iirc
So performing updates would remedy the issue, if they've patched it
Reading up on it, it's exactly that.
Common memory leak that was never patched
if you use lenovo, check vantage, i think they also do add updates that windows updates don't
Going back a year
Vantage or Lenovo update assist
Lenovo Update assist utility is better iirc
Sorry thaun if it seems like I'm trying to undermine you @_@
i mean, as long as it is a better tool, i only knew of vantage other than that
I have a love and hate relationship with vantage
Also updating twice a week is not enough imo, but that's because working in IT I've gotten annoyed at how many problems are solved by our users more frequently shutting down their computers

School is making me learn webdev and I've managed to brick my t480 with bootstrap
So I've been redownloading updates
Yeah
i mean, you shouldn't be able to brick bootstrap
I'm just gonna say it now
its only javascript and css
Don't
Use bootstrap to make a firmware flasher
It's boostrap as the ui
But i
Did
A massive fuck up on the backend
don't tell me you flashed your own /dev/sda
Well
You know
I can be smart, but I was writing directly into the folder that was supposed to be a database but really it was just the LFS folder
uhuh

you know what the worst part about webdev, teachers learning people to use putty to ssh into servers and write the site directly trough putty
oh, and i think they were writing php
too much to learn at the same time i would assume, it was supposed to be a small course of creating a LAMP server
it was probably also a class that has never touched linux
so you know what that means?
its nano learning time
when i tried to help someone on issues, it would be so bad, cause you could only use your arrows to navigate, and i had to point to where they should put their cursor on, and write what it had to write
HOW HARD IS IT TO LEARN NANO
BDJSAJSN
TB3 is always broken wdym
They've never fixed it 🤣
Yep
My dock doesnt initialize it's USB ports on start
thank god the teacher didn't tell them that they had to learn vim
Idk why people lack brains sometimes, this shit should be easy for any computer minded person
My t480 is on a KVM, I have a seperate computer for gaming
That's what that top thing is
I'm a student, I move often
Hence the sff
assume this, "any computer minded person" class was a group of people that did electronics but mostly joined cause they played video games alot. It's not a class where you choose that one specific topic, but a field of topics, so it was within one of them.
Fits in my backpack
idk what school type you call it, secondary school?
vocational school?
tbh, since i work a bit, i wish i got a rather "beefier" workstation, rather than the laptop
no, more like
"i want more fans on it, so it doesn't go up in flames"
T14s has an overheating problem, and when you need to use the powers, it shits itself
🤷
That's why I am in embedded engineering
My goal is ultimately work on something like that
Unfortunately this is too true. I've known so many with this mentality and dropped out
Now try bit twiddling all your life
i hate C, unironically, but not beacuse it's bad, but beacuse i am bad at it
lol
C is all I know
Yes
C is my favorite language
Bar none
You can do anything with it, and it's super light
Nothing better for machine level
Well besides assembly
any c# gangs?
I don't do OOP

Thaum I'm guessing you are a webdev?
fullstack
@_@ I am in the presence of a god
not that special, it just means our company doesn't have enough people to seperate work to just one person to front and other for backend
well, atm, the project i am working on now is just frontend
Fullstack would be more then two people
nah, not outsourcing, the api is buildt by someone who works there directly, the frontend that i am making is for their same firm.
but i could work on the backend, but python isn't my thing
Anyone know which microsoft office ver that isn't the 365 shit?
well, if you mean you want to have word just without the subscription, you can buy it https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/p/word/cfq7ttc0hlkm
which is for 1 device
otherwise, the subscription for personal is https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/p/microsoft-365-personal/cfq7ttc0k5bf
7 dollar a month
or 70 dollar a year
or if you want a package that is one-time-purchase https://www.microsoft.com/nb-no/microsoft-365/p/office-home-business-2021/cfq7ttc0hpn4
The nice thing with office 365 sub is the inclusion of one drive
wasnt this website purchased encouraged to change their performance criteria to make intel processors look less terrible with the advent of ryzen
or am I thinking of a different, but strikingly similar looking website
Supposedly yeah lmao
Ew
I mean, isn't that how mobile phone benchmarks work? 😄
"This phone is 50% faster at peak performance!" (in a mode that would burn a hole in the chassis if you used it for more than 2 seconds at a time)
Yeah the benchmarks for the Snapdragon 888 claim its like 45% better than my 845 from 2019, but I didn't think the mobile chips were still getting gains like that. The 895 in the current flagships presumably being even higher than that. Presumably like 60% better in 3 years in 2022 seems... unlikely.
I'd like the nonpresence of rgb. XD
The quiet is cool and all, but I'd want the benefits of cooling without RGB plox
at what point is it just a small brick of SRAM
Lol I thought the reflection of the lights was part of the thing and I was so confused
Still gonna lose the 10mm in a week
lol I love that crab video
sanity checking I did my unittests right and trying to repro issue: 1 day
fixing said issue: 1 copy paste
I smart SWE
I mean.... that’s software in a nutshell isn’t it?
Refurb 3090 1199
there's another version of this: When people were trained to debug software strictly by stepping it in the debugger
instead of looking at the entire issue first before digging in
it's funny how they missed the baseball stitching
there was a car where audi did that
It’s an ‘08 but it still smells like you put a new baseball glove over your face when you get in it.
Ftr I did my unit tests right.
And tbh I haven’t had to step through using a debugger that often, either I knew the code well enough or stack trace.
Stick? I can feel them being fried
ya know for all the great car design hyundai does
I can't believe they phoned this bullshit in
That looks terrible
I just love how they could've done this any way to go with the contours and instead they were like
naw let's just cut this hole here
despite that, I bet it sells like the best vehicle ever because for some reason when people buy cars like that they seem to go nuts for shit that's ugly on purpose
What if we had
Had fried rob thighs in the baseball audi? 😳

i can as well, but only in a convertible with the top down
turns out leather seats get awfully hot when exposed to direct sunlight
Well can't be worse than the metal from the belt though
yea but you don't set your butt on the metal from the belt clip and the rest of it is plastic
Why wouldn't you want to burn your hands afterall
Ah fuck that
you pushed on the black GM thing inthe middle to open it

lol
I remember ford having very similar ones, lol the cars my dad had when I was little had them
when I was born my parents had a taurus
then later my dad downsized to a ford tempo
the metal was awful on a hot day xD
There are still some vehicles with them but it is pretty uncommon
Like the cheapest Jeep Wrangler still has them
I think the one thing that is dead entirely is physical key ignitions
Even the cheapest cars are using push button start now
It’s not worth the money to make a keyed ignition for the lowest end car
And besides the push button receiver is likely more reliable
The keys are going to have a transponder regardless
Oh yeah I hate that
The more time goes on, the more I hate it
I’ve been seriously considering swapping my Jeeps radio for something else to get rid of the 4g connection because they sell the data lmao
GM has been doing that with onstar forever
That'll rack you... 90000$
300ZX tho
sigh
can anyone help?
I accidentally installed a kids tracking app on my phone and I can't disable or uninstall it
"Needs password to uninstall my ass"
not even android debugging can help
abd uninstall didn't work?
Which one
Makes the Camaro blind spots seem tame!
Remember when they redesigned it and it was so ugly they redesigned it again the following year
They should’ve left it alone
It looked better before
I kinda want a Camaro though they are excellent cars, specially for the price
If you get the 1LE package it has magnetic dampers and GM makes the best system
I wish the camaro came with the holden commodore body panels 😔
Tfw no more Chevy SS
Camaro
the camaro isn't a ZR?
that's not a confusing product code structure at all lmao
Only difference is features
I forgot GM's product codes are as byzantine as toyota's
1SS is a solid value if you don’t care for safety features
if you're driving a sports car you've already chosen chaos
can't wait for the EV camaro to show up
they already have a hybrid vette and apparently a full EV one in prototype
I heard the Camaro might get dropped again
not a surprise, it has shit margins since it's a $38,000 V8 lmao
They don’t sell well because everyone says they feel like a coffin to drive
you can put the same engine in a vette and charge twice as much
yeah, I can see that too
I don't mind a small passenger space but I would prefer it to be a small outside and a small inside
not a yuge outside and tiny inside
Boomer vehicles
I think it’s something you’d get use too but it basically requires blind spot monitoring
And if you’re taller then it’d really suck
yeah, I've heard the camaro is basically designed to fit the guy who designed it
if you're taller than 5'8 it's miserable
Haha I believe it
It's miserable for short people too
because it's a camaro ha gottem
It just feels heavy to drive :P
Just buy the Cadillac same car but you can see out of it
that's the ATS?
Yeah but with magnetic dampers that doesn’t really matter
It has enough low end torque where weight isn’t a huge issue IMO
imagine sports cars with electric motors
no need for superchargers when you have 500lb-ft at go

Spine breakin
an excellent way to shit yourself
Feels like a wet sock still
press the throttle too hard and your ribs become one with the seat

actually, the car I'm most excited to see an EV of is the fucking miata
the miata is peak sleeper car, it's so fucking light
you don't need a 700whp engine to make it go fast
Yeah, but you put a ev in it...it'll do a wheely

it'll be fine, probably
I've seen people put hayabusa motors in a fucking smart car

Yeah Vinny b
He's a Quebecois
He had to reinforce it quite a bit
Did you see his locking diff on it?
Absolutely fucking cursed
I thought smart cars were perfectly safe and the frame was super reinforced to survive an accident
not at all a hamster ball with wheels
Yeaaaaaaaaaaah
You get hit by a highlander in that thing and you become human windows XP pinball on the highway
if you get hit by a modern highlander it'll just drive over you like an inconvenient curb
based 7 foot tall hood and 3 foot clearance
pfft
So, as my laptop had its nvme replaced. Do you guys think it might run ER better now?
Or should i expect chunky performance still
Considerin that the nvme was attributed as the cause of the crashes etc
🤔
why would nvme be the cause of crashes, unless there's a problem with the board or the drive
imagine having a PS4 😔
if I had a PS4, I would play it on there
it doesn't run very well on my PC 😔
been waiting for them to fix it but
I am starting to have this feeling they won't
from software isn't known for optimization
didn't it take like, two years for dark souls to be playable on PC
you are right actually
so what's the solution for this? just replace with a new one?
unless it comes from FS directly, I wouldn't bet on it
all the modders are in horny jail because of ranni
Yeah I wouldn’t bother trying to fix it just buy a new monitor
You’d have to take it apart, grab the panel part number and order it from China which could take several weeks and would probably cost you 70 bucks
shipping probably costs you $70 on its own because air freight is boned right now
dont even fucking start
it's a whole fucking saga

alas, I have not the time to sit for the ongoing saga of > the company refuses to acknowledge their product is shit and spent two months giving me the runaround
thinking of buying those desk arm monitor stands, are they good?
or like should I just use my TV that I never used for a monitor? 😹
literally bought the TV just to improve aesthetic of my living room
Depends on which you really get. Some are high quality and very solid, some will just bounce around everytime you dare to breathe
If you get a solid one, then it's worth it
and it requires a specific monitor yeah
a monitor that has the holes to attach the arm to it
ok ty ty
Just make sure it has vesa
vesa is the standard
I personally like monitor arms for more desk space
Just make sure you get a properly rated one
this is the spec, around 200 sold in total and 15 sold in the last 24 hours
seems have no brand, have no idea if it's good or not
https://youtu.be/__K4V8pFhf4?t=174 what's the reason of it being wobbly like in the video?
I think monitor arms are a great investment to any desk setup. And you don't have to spend a whole lot to get a decent one. Or you could... Like I just did.

@potent arrow MY FUCKIN BRAND NEW DEWALT STEP BIT JUST BROKE DRILLING OUT SOME 1/8” COPPER LINE ARE YOU FUCKIN FORREAL
Should have bought milwaukee obvs
Lmao I own the HF ones too, they have held up fine but aren’t very sharp
Can’t really complain though they aren’t expensive
Just bought this set they look pretty cool
Though why they negated 3/4 annoys me
I can’t find an individual 3/4 wrench for them either
oooo neat
framework updated their laptop
and they're selling all of the new parts as upgrades to existing ones
Isnt that... what they said theor whole dealw as?....
So much for highly reviewed /s
Well it’s the point of a modular laptop. That being said it sounds exciting that they’re successful enough for a 2nd gen
Issue now is being cost and performance competitive with existing options.
Multi-billion dollar lab and still providing techs with $10 keyboards and mice... orz
I mean, lots of labs are that way
Lmao ikr
Fuckin soft ass metal and the drill bit breaks
for a shared lab computer, I'll take the cheap keyboard if it means they clean it regularly and it's never gross (or they replace it when it does)
i'll never say no to some nice cherry blue keyboards in the lab though
I just really hate typing on chiclet keyboards. They're so slow and easy to mistype
i like the good ones but the cheap ones are really gross
yoooooo this new AMD driver is ridiculous
I mean. they're not GAMING OR AMYTHING.
mechanical is totally a quirk for dork people. XP
You bring up a good point though, they probably use chiclet for sanitary reasons. Can't get dust and crumbs and whatever stuck between the keys like a standard keyboard.
Doesn't even need to be mechanical, I just hate chiclet keys lol. I used a Dell Multimedia keyboard for a long time
I mean.. probably shouldnt be.. eating in there.
Sure. That's why I mentioned dust first, since it's a validation lab.
I had one of these for like 8 years before it got super mushy and I bought a Ducky kb. Never had a key go bad on it tho
The newer ones of the same type feel a lot more flimsy tho, so they probably don't hold up like they used to
yeaaa the keyboard should be getting sanitized at least monthly, if not weekly,
<
Membrane baby!
i used to get to see this in clean rooms >< AHHHHHHHHHHHH
I never liked that dell keyboard. But I acknowledge that it has a cult following
Do you want to see inside my Ducky kb? /s
If you go to a random big company's IT helpdesk and ask them if they can get you "one of the good keyboards"
100% chance you're getting that one
hahaha ya know how mechanics often have some kinda decal or sign or flag on the wall with their favorite tool brand?
I'm surprised I've never walked in an IT room and seen a DELL sign on the wall
I got it on accident actually. I ordered a replacement internal laptop keyboard for one that got spilled on, and they sent that at first then told me to just keep it when I called to complain and get the correct part lol
and like, Dell pens, and Dell bumper stickers
(amusingly, Apple does the stickers at least :D)
Big corpos dont give out merch
idk about that
Our SOC ordered mechanical keyboards, but they got these very basic Logitech ones and they double-type randomly.
I think they do give out screen speaker bars and other random new junk nobody actually uses
They always give out trash, at best, at thr big conf events
You gotta go for the small to medium ones to get good stuff
Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised with that Dell kb bc previous to that I was replacing keyboards like every 18 months
aye
my experience with dell membrane keyboards is they squeak and the keys are loose
but that may be newer ones
And as I said, I've held the newer versions of that same keyboard and they're like half the weight. So I assume that means they're garbage now
The older keyboards we had were these...
They would get conveniently hidden in an office cabinet somewhere at first chance if they made it back onto the floor ;)
Oh YT comments. Guy trying to say a Q6600 w/8800GS and 4gb ram was a "high end gaming system" in 2008. Also while claiming he spent only $500 on it. (That CPU part alone is listed on Ark for 530)
Also the IPC on that gen was terrible, so you would be replacing it within 3 years, meanwhile 2nd or 3rd gen Core i-series easily gave you more than 5 years. (Discussion was about whether PCs today were a better or worse value/cost compared to years ago)
If we set aside the insane GPU price surge the last 2 years, you can get a passable PC for dirt cheap
If we use 3% inflation per year as a gauge, that means 42% inflation. So a supposed $500 system then would have been $710 now.
the 9700k I got for christmas 2018 is fast for some things and getting really long in the tooth on other things
i want a 5950x XD

i'd trade the 5fps loss in game X for being able to start game X, swithc to something else for some reason, and 2 hours later realize i forgot that I had game x open
You can get a 12400F for $170, 16gb ddr4 for $60, lets say GPU prices are sane again and have a 3060ti for $400. Other misc parts might take that up to $800. Or could get like a 1660 super instead for $250. That's going to get you 1080p @ 90-120fps+ depending on the game. A 2008 system was playing most stuff at like 30-60fps
yea the 1660 argument is funny because there's still people here talking about how the 3080 is gutless x
XD
Ehh... I think in your case it's more that you don't have hyperthreading
I have a 9900K which is essentially your CPU with hyperthreading and its still plenty fast
I used my 3770K from 2012 to 2019 and ran Div2 1080p on High @ 90fps or so
idk if having HT would have made the difference
16 threads.. ok I suppose
yea this goes back to me regretting not getting the 9900k hahaha
Yep, double the threads makes a big difference in modern workloads bc most stuff doesnt saturate an entire core on its own
Seems like most auctions for used 9900K are still like $300-400
Not gonna lie the dell keyboards kinda chonky
@modern iris Also wards arent a storage hog
With the way they are setup in ff14, yes they are.
Because you don't have access to their servers
If it was that easy and braindead to just add more houses
they would've done it ages ago
Don't forget this is the same company that had a barrel with a flower have the same amount of polygons as a player character
same company that loads all your glamour plates alongside your character
and same company that essentially causes a server meltdown if you move a glamour dresser inside a house while someone is accessing it (which is why we don't have glamour dressers for houses)
ff14 is so much jank and spaghetti code that the italians are envious
Cool
this ain't old republic
Do you know how to discuss? cause dropping to personal insults ain't it chief
Also
Instances don't matter
3,000 instances
They're all still stored separately on the server
you're literally refusing to acknowledge that ff14 is full of jank and spaghetti, which is a fact
@umbral moss cerakey is being sent out to vid reviewers
they look solid as fuck
literally
and I like the sound of em
He's right, you're wrong.
It's the poor business decision that keeps on giving!
I don't know exactly how the housing is stored on the backend, but as Sadlynn was referencing in a less than diplomatic way: YoshiP the lead game director for FF14 has talked about on multiple occasions how the poorly written 1.0 game code from before the re-launch has caused them lots of headaches and made certain things "not possible" due to how many things it touches in the game code.
They had outsourced a lot of the game development for FF14 1.0 and it was very poorly done, so while ARR was able to salvage the game, a lot of the underlying code is still impossible to work with short of completely rewriting the entire client from scratch.
It's a similar idea to how Blizzard stated they were unable to change the default bag size in WoW due to how the code was written. So the 2nd thru 5th bags grew ever larger over the expansions, but your "1st bag" was always the same 24 slots or w/e
So it's entirely possible the housing system has some fucky DB schema where the writes cause log-scaling issues and prevent caching or slow it down. I forget exactly what the term is called. But you try to design your tables in a such a way that they don't cause exponential i/o problems
https://www.thedrive.com/news/600k-mile-kia-sorento-driver-milks-10-year-warranty-for-9-engines >Traded in for a Saturn Vue for $18k ... how is a Saturn still worth 18k at 14 years old?
The market is weird
What the company says: we rebuilt it from the ground up
What they actually mean: we took the codebase and put a new UI on it
Every MMO has this problem tbh, either because its ancient or because they dont know what theyre soing (cough korean companies, new world)
For years RS3 had a broken friend chat system where you had to login to OSRS to manage your FC cuz it didnt work in RS3
Plus the clan system had to be rewritten from scratch which took years
To be fair, rebuild means you are working with a base of some sort, not "rewrote from scratch". They still put in 18 months of redevelopment working insane hours so its not like they were trying to still cut corners at that point
naw what ya do is make the MMO client in adobe flash 😄
How did that Sorento owner manage oil changes every 3k miles if they were driving to California and back? It's a 2000mi trip, so that would mean either getting an oil change each way, or after 4k mi round trip. Also how bad of an engine did those have to shit out consistently after 67k all highway miles?
they could stop halfway
but, I'd be surprised if they were changing at 3k
oh geez they say it averages out to 3k., nevermind my nonsense 😄
almost every car I owned suggested 3k for 'heavy duty' use only (primarily city driving)
They sound OCD given they kept an immaculate set of records, including all gas receipts.
So I actually wouldn't be surprised if they had some specific Kia dealerships along the way they would schedule oil changes for.
Then again, I suppose they wanted to make absolutely sure they would honor the replacement of the engines
The weirder thing is the dealer not having newer motors to swap in instead of faulty new old stock lol
I get the impression the motor design itself is defective
and there is no solution
the funny part to me is they've been defective for over a decade now
And then they traded it in for a Saturn Vue Redline AWD Suv that gets 23mpg highway
one of my coworkers at my internship in 2013 had a brand new sonata... then the engine caught on fire
the part I thought was insane was that they replaced the car with another sonata
Supposedly it was a workmanship issue and the motor design itself was fine.
And the newer versions of the same motor have been fine
then i really don't know
the other thing i find surprising is that they had replacement motors in stock every time
from what I remember of that reddit thread, they commonly are a week to a month wait
maybe they had a saturn before
idk why some people buy what they buy lol
I mean, it sounds like they went to the same dealership and they knew they had the 10yr warranty, so probably after the 2nd motor replacement and regular oil changes, they knew to have a motor onhand once a year for them LOL
Also to buy a 23mpg suv in 2022 with these gas prices...
i've always lived in california and almost every car here is a honda, toyota, or subaru.. so I have never felt the desire to have one. so I make bad financial decisions time and time again when it comes to cars.
*or bmw
there are certain ones that catch my attention, like supras, miatas (even those are pretty common tbh), and things like a clean oldschool CRX that somehow hasn't been modified
I had a lot of compliments on my Stinger from ppl at my apartment complex when I first got it. And in WI now I just had some german/euro accent guy compliment the car in the Target parking lot last week heh
yea
but like, I'd never buy a rav4. I probably wouldn't buy most of the things in that class in general though
Teslas are also very common in CA
yep
I actually had a Tesla dealership a few miles down the road
and while I thought the model s looked neat when they first came out
i'd never buy a tesla now 😄 too common
Sounding a little hipster there ;p
I don't think I care about driving a common car though
I need to think about that
I think I'd still consider a model S, since I like that form the best
the 3 looks too stubby, the Y looks ridiculous
the X looks ehhhh but the only reason I find it interesting is the gullwing doors
but the S is long and low enough it looks like a stretched out porsche
should I get 600 bucks in amazon or bestbuy if I wanted to buy new pc parts and waited for a sale
I'd assume Amazon is going to give you better deals. Just make sure you select the correct seller. You know how Amazon is about you think you're buying from Amazon or some company directly, and it turns out its some shady reseller in HK
Alright, who wants it for 900? XP
Seriously chooses to pop AFTER the 3080 queue.. I KNEW I signed up for the 3070 one.. uuuugh
theda II (direct injection) has known manufacturing flaws causing oil starvation > spun bearings, and crankshaft failure. a seperate known problem, is the high pressure pump fitting failing and causing fire
the flaw is metalic shavings that are not properly removed that clog feed channels
working on the cable management but I already like this case
the stock fans are already super good, I just added a 120mm fan for exhaust
Looks good but what is that tumor above the CPU cooler?
looks like some kind of dumb fan duct thing
A top mounted PSU?
The PSU's in there
top-mounted PSU in 2022
Yeah top-mounted PSUs aren't heard of much nowadays but I don't find it unwelcome
I'm still a bit surprised that PSUs are still so large
Nah
I would have thought GaN topologies would have landed for PSU power electronics and we'd be looking at micro PSU units
It's a standard ATX PSU
sure, but the "power" part doesn't need to be so damn big
a 1300W PSU is like 18 inches long
also, the cables should be part of the tower itself, rather than the PSU module 😤
we've always done it that way
People think bigger equates to better maybe
I like bigger because I have more space to work with
it's a combination of heat dissipation and the electronics themselves
semiconductor based PSUs still take up a good bit of space, even though they're way more efficient than analog designs
rip toroidal inductors and step up/down transformers 🪦
before and after cable management in the PSU shroud
Before is fine
when is the new intel
and ddr5 price drops happening
wait 2 more years for ddr5 price drops?
I can technically wait anothe ryear and get another 600 bestbuy bucks
Okay so I just purchased a AMD Sapphire Nitro RX 570 8GB & I was wondering if its compatible with a Gigabyte ga-h110m-s2h Motherboard ?
Yes
Next gen possibly and we need another generation still for ddr5 to reach even lower but some kits even now are fine
Plus amd using it for am5 means wider adoption so prices will go down after that too
hmmmmm
Also intel hopefully moving to full ddr5 for 13th gen
So give it another generation or two before even thinking about it unless you literally need to upgrade which you don’t
Awesome
Generally speaking any gpu will work for the motherboard given it’s still pcie so you could get say a 3090 or even next gen and use them but there most likely will be a bottleneck depending on the cpu you use and what resolution you play at
Does this particular one have a Pcie ?
yes, that slot large slot right there is a 3.0 x16 slot
you won't have to worry too much about technicalities since you're just now upgrading and i doubt you're upgrading again soon since you just got a card
np
Every Mobo has PCIE
maybe this means they'll have working IMC support instead of the ad hoc dumpster fire that always happens to first gen intel chips with a new DDR spec
@deep sapphire btw Im fnally signed a deal on a truck
What did you get
You said you wanted a ram right?
2500 BH
What do you need a heavy duty truck for haha
2022 (they just upgraded my 2021 to 2022)
I'll be using it for the shop and whenever I work with my dad
What is BH
Just a fancy trim : P
2500s are gas guzzlers and usually ride like shit compared to half ton, I would only get one if you need to tow a trailer often IMO
It was a basically ok I'm spending the money, why not get some nice seats and stuff
Yeah, I'll be towing a trailer atleast 2 seasons out of the four
Yeah high trim trucks are basically luxury boats now days
pics? 😄
The new Silverados look really nice
what color is it? 😮
I have two trailers technically, and towing them would save money
Yeah that’s fair
I can grab some tmmrw, I'm going to the dealership to pic it up
6.4 HEMI?
ahh ok
Or did you get the cummins
are they still selling a cummins?
neeeaaat
I was tripping there and I was like wait did I get a Cummins
Yeah they still offer the cummins but they only offer a 6 speed transmission with it which is kind of a joke when ford and Chevy offer a 10 speed
oh dear me lol
So it has less power and worse fuel economy than the competition
you're gonna get like 10mpg with that hemi aren't ya
Behehehe
I mean they're great for highway driving
in the cars they get 20-ish mpg highway pretty darn easily
TBF!!! 50% the company will pay for the gas
do they not have MDS cylinder deactivation on those?
Though tbf that stretch is extremely windy and is mostly up hill
It kept wanting to hunt for gears cruising at 70
Which is why a 6 speed is dumb
yea that's such a bummer
especially considering the hemi + 8 speed zf makes a good combination everywhere else lol
yea it's like one of the best reasons to buy anything from them lmao
yesterday I read a funny post on the jeep forum about that
like someone was questioning why anyone would bother with the crappy manual the jeeps have atm (it has.. issues)
it blows my mind they'd do that on an enthusiast vehicle but here we are 😦
no wonder
they are using the ZF 8 speed in the 2500 6.4L now
you only get the 6 speed if you get the cummins
i.. want that
Lol
I think I got a good deal
Then again I'm paying in cash
Ouef my wallet
~57k CAD
That’s not too bad for a HD
That’s like 50,000 US so that’s actually a bargain for a truck haha
Yeah, I'm fairly happy with it
We will see how happy I am when I do my first tow with it lol
I do not have the money for an ev truck
Bro this dude in self checkout has a full cart of shit and is scanning it super slow
Fuckin Walmart
Sarah: yea im payin 57k cash
Also sarah: cant afford ev!
Good luck getting an ev for 57k Cad here
good luck geetting one at all
I dont want an ev sedan, I need a work vehicle
Plus losing half your range in the winter
Which up north is half the year
EVs are great but not right now
maintaining the walmart checkout experience
This is what happens when they rely too much on self checkout 😔
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing he literally had at least 40 items in his cart and abunch of produce and he took probably a minute or more for each item
Like dude
Lol doesn’t surprise me
We’ve had to do it for full carts because the people manned checkouts are usually closed
And the self checkouts always break so it’s like 1-2 instead of 4
It’s fucking awful
I mean.. there should be like 4 ststions right?
And its walmart so probably 8 actually
and yeah no one want to remember a script to scan your groceries.
It’s simple, takes two seconds i used to do it
Head empty doing work discovery: man has a man page
So computer people, I have a question about cases and setups - specifically ITX cases.
I'm looking at making my build into an ITX one for two reasons; one I like the way they look and two because my current build in a 4000x has like 1/3rd of an inch on the back and front if it from the edge of the desk.
I'd be keeping my Zotac 3080, 5800x and hopefully my RAM from my current build.
But the three cases I've been looking at are;
- Thermaltake Tower 100
- SSUD Meshilicious
- Phanteks Evolv Shift XT
I know the Meshilicious is everyone's default choice, but to me it's kinda bland over the other two. I've broken it down among the three but I still can't decide because of certain things;
- The Tower 100 and SSUD can use ATX PSUs, meaning that I don't have to buy a new one, but the Phanteks needs an SFX PSU
- The Tower 100 has the issue where it can only take 120mm Rads, or air cooling for the CPU. It also seems like the airflow is a little low? But overall cost is lowest for this case (since smallest cooler and no need for a new PSU)
- The Phanteks seems like it has good airflow especially in AIO mode, takes a 240mm Rad and ties with the SSUD (case costs less, but requires a PSU that the SSUD doesn't) while also looking better
3080 in an ITX case = Hot boi
All the other ATX cases that are smaller than mine while being decent quality are either too long (the big issue with my desk) or straight tempered class everywhere (which would be worse than the Meshilicious or Evolv Shift XT).
Hmm is Nyaa down for anyone else?
so u can be a gamer
I think I’m gonna pick up another one of those carts and mod it so it’ll be a 10 drawer
Being able to lug around all my tools on a single cart is handy
dude I gif-searched for "nyaa" to post a funny reaction gif on this but half the results are cringe ass streamers
😔
go ahead and gif-search for "nyaa"
Well you can always google and regret
Hanks honkers
for when you wanna shit post from your mechanic bay
I suppose that's probably their old computer that they decided to use in the shop instead of tossing it
for a sec i thought that was a crack at the 'world's smallest violin' joke
fuck sakes lol
@modest moss @potent arrow HERE WE FUCKING GO AGAIN
F
connecting to the car onboard computer? but i thought they had more compact sensors than actually hauling a whole ass computer
There are some things which work less well at that framerate but it's far from broken
14 used to be shit tier buggy at triple digit fps but it was soft fixed by capping the polling rate of physics (so you dont fall through the world) so the side effect of animations being dumb. not a very good fix but this is typical se development quality
(computex teaser for x670 chipset mobos)
Looks like... a latch.
iirc crash remaster is a glorified unity port so blame lazy programming
elder scrolls is just bethesda not caring since havoc was from the era where 75hz was the best it got (and usually is capped to 60hz physics polling intended to be tied to display rate)
same bug with gta 3 engine games
i wonder who buys it
dexos quality oil in itself isn't a $1/bottle oil though lol
it's usually full synthetic?
but the $20 5qt bottle at walmart is 99% as good as the $50 5qt bougie brand
the amazon listing is slighty jacked price wise. will look again
33.19 for 5qt at walmonster
and the royal pruple is indeed purple
but it's more black-ish
which IMHO is annoying AF for motor oil
$26/5qt at fleet farm
oh yea
when the gas truck oil came out it was really cheap
everyone was raving about how great it was for the price
This is probably a rather out there question but I'm not sure where it really belongs to so
For anyone with a Surface Go 2 (Core m3) or Go 3 (Pentium Gold) version with at least 8GB RAM, how well does FFXIV run at 1280x720 Standard (Laptop)?
still 60hz

Reminds me of when I was plying forza 5 on my 3080ti lol
The fans were going nuts and I was like wtf and then I go close to my tower and it feels like when you preheat an oven and open the door
Lol
But seriously I don’t care how efficient a card is, if it pulls 380w it’s going to be a portable space heater
stock rx480 flashbacks
The crazy thing about the ex480 is here we are all these years later and heh what, 6500xt? Same shit
Yeah amd is amazing
I remember overclokint the one my Powrrbook had lmao
And the Radeon I had in my power mac g4 as well lmao
That was the one time I went “let’s see how much I can OC before there’s artifacts”
Fun times lol
Over clocking a laptop gpu thouhh
Lol this was a long time ago
There was also a random point where iBooks had a low end desktop Radeon chip lmao
please i been working my ass off and have about 700 in budget. what is a good student laptop than can handle coding/programming and video editing, but mainly, ffxiv 💀
