deep sapphire
#

or not

jaunty light
#

the closest I got to rolling my truck was trying to do a 180 on a like 40 degree hill

deep sapphire
#

wtf happened to it

#

LOL

sly elk
#

i'd guess

#

rear ended by a semi

deep sapphire
#

yeah that could be it

#

that entire frame buckled holy shit

sly elk
#

there were some pics of a pileup a few weeks ago

#

modern truck looked just like that

deep sapphire
#

oh yeah I saw that

#

the F250 right

#

that was crazy

sly elk
#

yea

#

idk if they survived

#

i dunno how they would

deep sapphire
#

that was a brand new F250 as well

sly elk
#

.. this is the part I say again cars are scary af

deep sapphire
#

I doubt they did

#

no way

#

that was a crazy photo

sly elk
deep sapphire
#

uuuuuh ford bros?

sly elk
#

ah one comment i'll make about body on frame vehicles

#

the body not really being 'structural' seems like a terrible idea lol

jaunty light
#

just have better bones

deep sapphire
#

it depends on where the crash occurs, in front or rear minor to medium impacts they hold up pretty well, but in high speed crash or offset yeah the ladder frame doesnt help for shit

#

modern trucks are much better though

#

we've all seen the 2001 F-150 IIHS video

#

that thing buckled so bad

#

lmao

jaunty light
#

thatll buff right out

deep sapphire
#

I think he said it was one of the worst performing vehicles he'd ever seen

#

Ford OMEGALAUGHING

#

@jaunty light

#

Ford OMEGALAUGHING

jaunty light
#

dont worry i got a 4 door im fine

deep sapphire
#

yeah so you can escape out the back

#

just put it in neutral before you get into the accident it'll just bounce you back

#

do HD trucks just not have any safety at all or what

#

I know the government doesnt have to conduct the same tests on a legality if the GVWR is over 8500lbs

jaunty light
#

nope pretty sure if you tipped over the f650 we got that thing would crumple like a piece of paper

deep sapphire
#

wo people were sent to the hospital; one with serious injuries and the other with minor pain.

#

serious pains

#

the dude is dead look at that the entire fuckin cabin was decapitated by the trailer lol

sly elk
#

😦

deep sapphire
#

FINAL DESTINATION

sly elk
#

yea HD trucks don't really strike me as something safe

deep sapphire
sly elk
#

i wonder how much cheaper it is to own/operate a 3500 duramax than to say, buy a used kenworth or whatever

jaunty light
#

i rewatched 5 and 3

#

i didnt realize they were so goofy

sly elk
#

or a volvo or something

jaunty light
#

i guess it's better to make them goofy cuz they would be mad depressing if they tried to make it super serious and realistic lol

#

still doesn't drive behind lumber trucks because of final destination gang

jaunty light
#

woah hank

#

this isnt horny zone

deep sapphire
#

ya true sry

sly elk
deep sapphire
#

looks like its kenworth not purchasing

#

your current pic has a filter on it, hard to tell age

sly elk
#

this looks more fun

deep sapphire
#

LEWD

jaunty light
#

were u part of a seattle grunge band back in 90

jaunty light
#

hank full on horny posting

deep sapphire
#

wha no I just like trials of mana

#

good game

jaunty light
#

oh wait i forgot maggie is flat

deep sapphire
jaunty light
#

@deep sapphire

deep sapphire
jaunty light
#

literally its talking about @modest moss

deep sapphire
#

damn

jaunty light
#

i c ur nips

jaunty light
#

t-that's not an isuzu

deep sapphire
#

yes it is!

sly elk
deep sapphire
sly elk
#

totally not a nissan

jaunty light
#

that would be funny go around jacking the badges.. wait wrong phrasing, stealing badges off of trucks and replacing it with other brands

sly elk
jaunty light
#

nope only anime music

deep sapphire
deep sapphire
# sly elk

you ever seen the promotional material for that

#

its pretty funny

jaunty light
sly elk
deep sapphire
#

TRY TO GO EASY ON THE CAR

#

YOU'RE BURNING UP THE TIRES

sly elk
#

you gotta appreciate the steering wheel though

#

that's a high quality rebadge

deep sapphire
#

as someone who drove a camry

#

thats pretty funny

#

you can clearly tell thats a toyota steering wheel

#

LMAO

#

the cruise control is in the same spot too

sly elk
deep sapphire
#

hahahaha

sly elk
#

ahhh it must be the one american part

#

look how it doesn't match the rim

deep sapphire
#

omfg the speedo is the same too

jaunty light
deep sapphire
#

hahaha

#

thats amazing

jaunty light
#

why did they dedicate an entire part

#

what

sly elk
#

well yea that was part of the NUMMI deal

#

yea that's the hilarious part

#

like practically every american car brand makes a wheel with an emblem that can be switched depending on brand

deep sapphire
sly elk
#

speaking of that

deep sapphire
#

toyota but without the ugly toyota logo

sly elk
#

i think the corvette was one of the first gms in a while to have an actually bespoke wheel

#

but hey that's also how they got them so cheap

deep sapphire
#

that iconic steering wheel they used on trucks for 20 years

sly elk
#

swwoooooon

#

I want

deep sapphire
sly elk
#

i like bloo

sick edge
#

Where's our rainbow pattern do?

sly elk
#

the corvette in the 80s had a simiular wheel but

#

dude the seats are interesting lol

#

they look like lazyboy chairs

deep sapphire
#

the C5 had similar thin seats like that

sly elk
#

1 year later

deep sapphire
#

horrible

sly elk
deep sapphire
#

ahh that 90s GM diagnostic console

sly elk
#

i wonder

#

if it has crotch vents

#

that dashboard has so many vents lmao

deep sapphire
#

the C4 interior is...

#

I dunno

#

its interesting

sly elk
#

it's hideous but it kinda has a jet fighter vibe

deep sapphire
#

the side skirts sit up really high as you can tell, so its kinda uncomfortable with the trans tunnel

#

you'd driven an XJ I believe

#

they had the same issue

#

the trans tunnel is so fuckin wide

sly elk
#

?

deep sapphire
#

all the peddles are tightly grouped

sly elk
#

never driven an xj

deep sapphire
#

oh

sly elk
#

but I hate cars with tight pedals like that

deep sapphire
#

I just assumed

#

cause jeep guy

#

sorry

sly elk
#

it's why i never bought a vw lol

deep sapphire
#

jeep guy and everything

sly elk
#

that airbag looks like it's gonna blow

#

hey now

deep sapphire
#

just figured cause all jeep guys have driven an XJ

sly elk
#

I've ridden in the cargo area of an xj before

deep sapphire
#

I mean not saying anything just

#

ya know

sly elk
#

my best friend's mom had one XD

deep sapphire
#

😛

sly elk
#

ahhh i hope she's doing well

#

she was hella nice XD

#

a hella nice person* (don't get weird ok)

late pier
#

Guys, if Im upgrading from Nvidia card to another Nvidia card, I don't have to uninstall the driver right?

deep sapphire
#

not typically but its a good idea regardless

#

if the cards are newer then its less of a problem

#

if you are upgrading a card that is 8+ years old then you should

sly elk
#

yea it'll be fine

#

if you have like the geforce app

#

that automatically updates your driver

#

lol I went 1070ti -> 5700xt -> 3070 and then realized I never uninstalled geforce experience

deep sapphire
#

Lmao nice

late pier
#

Alright then, Im just going to replace it

deep sapphire
#

5700XT so bad he goes back to nvidia

sly elk
#

eh

late pier
#

Im buying gtx 1650 MiqoteConfident

sly elk
#

the 5700xt was great

deep sapphire
deep sapphire
sly elk
#

but whenever i played games it'd get hella hot and make tons of fan noise

#

and at the time mining was pushing 5700xt prices up like crazy

#

so I sold it and bought the 3070

deep sapphire
#

You might excite bidori

sly elk
#

got a performance upgrade and made a few bucks

deep sapphire
#

Couple bucks on the side

sly elk
#

seriously lol

deep sapphire
#

Slingin parts for harry

sly elk
#

honestly that buying-selling thing made out such that my 3080ti effectively cost about $1000

#

from selling high and buying when I could get a good price lmao

jaunty light
#

oh i still need to do something with my 2080 ti

#

shit's sittin in tha closet

deep sapphire
#

Give me it

#

I’m a 1070 pleb

jaunty light
#

k gimmie ur address

deep sapphire
#

Okay don’t send me used condoms

late pier
#

Man, graphic card price is starting to crash now, won't be much profit anymore

sly walrus
#

least we’ll be able to buy them

deep sapphire
#

Yeah getting a bit more reasonable

late pier
#

Got a friend who sold their card for almost 3x the price, so jealous angrymiqote

deep sapphire
#

Yeah but a card also costs 3x the price

#

So it’s kinda equal unless you have a spare card

late pier
#

Yeah, he sold his old card before upgrading

#

Just lucky he didn't immediately sold it

deep sapphire
#

I convinced my friend to ditch his 5700 for a 3080 he only paid a 300 dollar difference

#

He was like holy shit games work now

late pier
#

Must be nice having 4k monitor and 60 fps uwucarby

jaunty light
#

1080p 360fps baby

#

ha lame

#

not the asus rog gamer rgb ultimate crosshair hero roman numeral wifi extreme?

#

i need 2 many cores

#

gimmie 7950X3D

#

or the 7950UWU edition

odd sand
#

Could always build an older threadripper or xeon system

jaunty light
#

i'll rip your threads

#

hope your bedsheets are durable

odd sand
jaunty light
#

I wish I could take decommed equipment home smh

#

we literally destroy perfectly good $40k servers after they hit their 3 year mark

odd sand
#

Bc JS is garbo that needs high clocks for single threads right?

#

Destroy them? You working for DOD or something?

jaunty light
#

yep

#

full custody from buy to destroy, so there's 0 chance of ever even thinking about the hardware, such a waste

odd sand
#

RIP. I just got done with a DOD contract at new years

jaunty light
#

its a shame but i at least try and keep perfectly fine servers stacked up to make a lab at work or some dumb shit

odd sand
#

The only thing they gave away was a stack of retired 1080 GPUs a few years ago

jaunty light
#

we're about to cycle out quad socket, xeon gold, 2TB ram virtualization hosts

#

to be fair I don't know what they actually do with them but considering I've left shit out in the rain before it's probably not giving it to other agencies that don't have budget and whatnot

odd sand
#

Nobody else in the DOD needs that? Despite a lot of places running on stupid old shit>

jaunty light
#

EOSL is a problem because our gen9 560s are unsupported in 2023 and they really.. aren't that old hardware wise

#

but yeah that's what im sayin

odd sand
#

My contract at least was DOD-affiliated school so I didnt have the worst of the stupidity

#

Although there was still a lot of facepalm stuff going on

jaunty light
#

even just local to us there are other divisions that have no budget that could use the shit, but rules be made up

#

don't see why we can't gift them a box with no disks and just transfer custody

odd sand
#

Our PM was constantly fighting the govvies to drag them into the modern era lol

#

Since they were like 2 gens out of date when we started the contract

#

Hire us as SMEs and for our expertise then constantly tell us No, You're Wrong when they dont like the answer

jaunty light
#

yes we did that with microsoft

#

except microsoft knows less about their products than we do and constantly suggested... not good solutions

odd sand
#

Funny thing is they usually finally came around, but it was only after like a year+ of beating the drum

jaunty light
#

ungodly amounts of money went to that project, I was talking to one of the contractors and he was legit getting comped to fly from florida to cali every week

#

he'd fly back on the weekends and come back weeekdays

#

total waste of time too

odd sand
#

Our biggest success I think was having everything setup for WFH

jaunty light
#

it would if we paid like 4 people several million dollars

#

most of which just went to microsoft anywayas but yeah

#

pretty sure he said he was pulling 300k+tdy

odd sand
#

When we were ordered to mandatory WFH we just changed a few firewall rules related to VPN and it all Just Worked

jaunty light
#

you'd hate how we have everything setup it's garbage

odd sand
#

CAC, SSO, etc. all worked it was nice

jaunty light
#

it's kinda weird how the "tiers" go but essentially we bought another team a VPN concentrator to manage so we could connect our clients to it

deep sapphire
#

CAC

jaunty light
#

except we don't manage it, and the team will not do some basic QoL adjustments for us

#

||every time you connect you get a different IP there is no leasing||

#

oh and it's a shared pipe that's like a half gig, at best you pull 100KB/s

#

and they expect my workstation guys to keep those boxes 100% clean?

#

what fucking world you living in

odd sand
#

I think the biggest hurdle currently is orgs not realizing just how easy it is to automate shit with Splunk and Ansible et al

jaunty light
#

takes a god damn age and a half to patch one let alone do anything else

#

70GB VS install for someone that decided oh VPN now? i'll go live across the country

#

ok enjoy the 1 week transfer time

jaunty light
#

i really wanna play with it

#

but for some reason they're hardline no against ansible which I don't get

odd sand
#

VPN was only enforced for certain services on our workstations, so something like that I would have just installed off the VPN

jaunty light
#

terraform is totally cool but you mention ansible and people get a stick up their ass

odd sand
#

My current contract though is a bit more strict so you basically cant do anything if the VPN drops

jaunty light
#

yeah we're lowside but still operate at the NIPR level so it's stipulated

odd sand
#

I think if you VPN and connect to Teams then drop you can still connect to existing meetings, that's about it. Can't see any updated chat or emails etc.

#

Terraform and Ansible complement each other

jaunty light
#

what's odd is that NMCI allows you to view email and teams on your phone now because it's just azure and o365

odd sand
#

Yeah I had teams and outlook on my phone for my last contract, but the new one you can't have either bc the VPN software isnt available

jaunty light
#

yeah I have no idea what the problem with ansible is. mention terraform cool, mention DSC cool, ansible = immediately no like ??

#

and we have a DOD wide contract with red hat so it's not a licensing problem

#

don't even need vpn now, I can just login on any device I have no problem

odd sand
#

We used ansible but I think there were some special considerations for the school

jaunty light
#

there's ansible content out there from DISA and everything but I haven't read any of it

odd sand
#

I guess you could hack together some POSH to accomplish similar things, but it might not be as crossplatform compatible

jaunty light
#

I just want to move heavily into operations and automation because that's how I can laterally transfer to private industry andor remain relevant cuz rn everything kinda sucks ass

#

yea we're like 95% windows so it's not a big deal to use DSC but yknow

odd sand
#

Yeah I've just been moved into an automation position at this new contract. I was a cyber analyst before

#

Unfortunately our PM is overtasked so I haven't been given clear guidance on wtf Im supposed to be doing yet and its already been like 2 months

#

So its mostly "Just book up on Terraform, ansible, Intune and defender on pluralsight for now" playdead

jaunty light
#

I have no powa but really if big boi DoN is doing it fuck it let's do AAD

#

AAD with onprem then federate the auth and use intune holy shit life would be so much easier for the workstation guys lmfao

odd sand
#

It's a service contract though not a "butts in seats" so im not worried for my job or anything, but i feel bad and anxious i dont have a clear milestone to work on yet

jaunty light
#

AD+WSUS works like 10% of the time

#

windows 2003 tier

#

SCCM probably works slightly better, but it's still garbage

odd sand
#

Geezus, we at least had like server 2012 min

jaunty light
#

no we're 2016 functional and 2019 DCs but what I mean is the architecture is just .. old

#

compared to AAD and intune it's archaic

odd sand
#

We werent using intune at the last one bc they didnt really have AAD rollout yet

jaunty light
#

I mean I guess I manage AD but it doesn't really need intervention cuz it sucks, so I've been trying to look at more server/virtualization/storage automation and am always amazed at the weird shit that exists

#

just happens that netapp somehow in a very small way overlaps with servicenow but it's super basic lol

odd sand
#

We used uhh... Ivanti I think

jaunty light
#

probably only useful if you're adding a workflow to provision a small user drive

#

yeah ivanti sucks balls too

#

works 1.5% of the time (on my workstation)

#

did the numbers nicoguns

odd sand
#

WSUS was used as well but I think they always did a test rollout beforehand to make sure shit worked before they released it to workstations

jaunty light
#

haha I have everything auto approved baby

odd sand
#

But yeah, network oversight can get crazy good if you properly configure splunk

jaunty light
odd sand
#

Unfortunately that takes a lot of effort and more org buyin than most orgs can manage it seems

#

"We want ALL the logs. Also, why does searching take forever?"

jaunty light
#

splunk be expensive, but also someone that can actually do splunk costs a lot of time

odd sand
#

That's why you need to pare that shit down at the heavy forwarder and only index what you need

jaunty light
#

here .. they uh, made the "splunk guy" someone with almost no interest in splunk and so they got hella basic network logging working and that's it

#

lol

odd sand
#

We're currently convincing ppl to offload excess logs to Glacier if they feel they may need it at some vague future time and only index what we need for monitoring and alerts

#

Yeah Splunk is one of those tools where at basic install you are getting like 1% out of it

#

But when you sit down with shareholders for each department and get the proper logs ingested and properly formatted at the heavy forwarder first... you can set up really nice dashboards and alerts that trigger automation scripts etc.

sly elk
#

lmao

#

my main work laptop is fine

odd sand
#

OR just have the Actions dropdown provide actions for ppl with the proper roles so they dont actually need credentials for stuff

sly elk
#

but I got locked out of my other work laptop a while back and haven't bothered to take it in to connect to the network

#

managed to screw that up real good xD

#

there's a way to vpn in from the login screen, but that apparently broke when they deprecated their old VPN 😦

jaunty light
#

I wanna get CISSP, VCP, CIE-SAN (lord help me) and now splunk tbh

odd sand
#

eg: Action dropdown for blocking an IP you would just need the appropriate roles in Splunk, but dont actually need account credentials to the firewall or border router

jaunty light
#

thats some good shit

#

oh yeah I also really want to implement PAM in my env because we don't do that shit

#

although I'm not particularly savvy with PAM or KMIP and the solution we have that I can use it 100% virtual no HSM

#

send me ur code I can probably not read it

odd sand
#

We had a kvstore for a selection of Notable Events and would just review that every 15mins or so. Stuff like bad domains, potential brute force, etc. and review them for stuff that automation would have been too many false positives

jaunty light
#

um,
using system;

system.console.writeline("haha i am c sharp pro lol")

odd sand
#

Splunk is like a better version of Jira: You can do a lot with it through proper config or addons, but most companies barely tap the surface and think it sucks

jaunty light
#

that doesn't bode well jira sucks ass

odd sand
#

I wouldn't say Jira is great, but the biggest issues I had with it at the last contract were it was just never configured right

jaunty light
#

I can't say much since I never did config for any atlassian products but I will say both for externally hosted+internally hosted it's slow as fuck and just.. not joyous to use

#

I especially hate how limited and shitty confluence is

odd sand
#

They had most departments pulling from the same default template, which meant that most projects were loading like 1500 fields for no reason

jaunty light
#

yea that applies to shit sharepoint implementations too tbh

#

one user syncs to sharepoint but updates 1000000000000000 files because cbf to segment it properly so it's just an org wide site

odd sand
#

So yeah, it's a pos if you don't configure it properly... which happens to be a majority of orgs

jaunty light
#

this always comes down to never having either the expertise or time or both

odd sand
#

Like 2 years into the contract though we had hammered Splunk and such into shape so when we had a pentest we basically shut them down and they had to ask us to whitelist them to get any testing done lmao

#

Usually it's they bring in someone to set the thing up to start, then consider it "done" and only keep 1 person around to patch and keep the lights on

#

Not realizing the setup was just for basic setup and it really requires another year+ of configuring

#

Now you made me think of how their AD had 95% of endpoints in one OU haha

jaunty light
#

just uh

#

you know apply 10,000 filters..

#

to determine if GPO should be applied or not..

#

don't mind the 1 hour logon time

#

that's normal

#

it's a feature

odd sand
#

"Where is this endpoint located?" "Dunno... check the CIDR range chart and see what building its in and we can ask around"

jaunty light
#

heck we maintain oldschool copies lol I couldn't tell you where shit is located

odd sand
#

Instea of something sane like: Workstation, Building Name, Accounting

jaunty light
#

yeah we have 40 buildings or more and no real structure like that, if the solution is to reassign to a person in a diff bldg that's what they do rip

odd sand
#

And when you do that and assign the proper OUs, you connect the thing to the domain and it automatically downloads all the software for the STIG for Accounting

deep sapphire
#

calculate subnets? I like to be inefficient and make everything a /8

jaunty light
#

/0 all vlans baby

odd sand
#

Class A intranet, we got plenty to spare! /s

deep sapphire
jaunty light
#

hi leased class B we need more thanks

#

actually I lied

#

class a and b

odd sand
#

It's really sad bc when you put in the work upfront to set things up properly, it saves so much ongoing work its not even funny

#

Asset mgmt is another one where it seems like companies do a halfassed job

jaunty light
#

do i refer you to assets.xlsx

odd sand
#

And its a cascading failure of stupidity too when you dont have asset mgmt, nor proper ad usage, etc.

#

Bc then its like ... where is this? who is the poc?

jaunty light
#

at the very least if it's online, you can find it

odd sand
#

okay well its been fun ranting but its 2:30 I should go to bed ... more pluralsight awaits me in the morning! namazuconcern

jaunty light
#

if not.. good luck

deep sapphire
#

oh god

#

pluralsight

#

I watched all the CCNA vids off there

odd sand
#

My fav was before we had Ruckus wifi triangulation I had to take a tablet into the building and fucking dousing rod for rogue APs

deep sapphire
#

like 80 something hours

odd sand
#

Smacking the wrists of every professor running an Apple Timemachine with open wifi.

jaunty light
#

snap it*

jaunty light
#

UNLEASH THE DOUSING ROD

#

BEGONE ROGUE MAGICAL USERS

odd sand
#

It basically was dousing bc i had wifi analyzer up and you're looking for the highest gain of course, then walking past and it starts dropping. Then you wonder if you're on the3 correct floor or if its above you lol

jaunty light
#

we would be good for you

#

no signals between floors kekw

#

or walls

odd sand
#

and of course the teaching staff dont give af about security so when you ask them to lock stuff down you get this face

#

Best part was them going Karen on you, then you just block them from the network

jaunty light
odd sand
#

ok sleep for real

jaunty light
jaunty light
#

@deep sapphire

#

that guy was mad

deep sapphire
#

Am sleep

jaunty light
#

when the lambo driver spams their car at 9k rpm you know they mad

#

doubt they were the owner judging by who got in it tho who redlines their vehicle at idle

#

hanks fav song up on the playlist

#

decade old already 👴

sly elk
#

starting to see the vesa option studio displays lol

#

as great as the stand versions look, the vesa mount one looks awful lmao

#

? wth macbook did you order?>

#

that's a $1500 screen?

jaunty light
#

tf kind of arms are those

sly elk
#

huh

#

is that an expensive monitor mount?

#

this dude took it to the extreme lmao

#

they have their mic on an arm, a ring light on an arm

#

their desk is gonna look like optimus prime

jaunty light
#

those arms look lame as shit

sly elk
#

the keyboard/mouse on an arm too XD

jaunty light
#

dont tell me the fucking cables are in that hammock ass thing

sly elk
#

no

#

that's for the feet

jaunty light
#

good

#

love feet 🐾

#

hate cables!

sly elk
#

what's that?

#

OH

#

that's the price for the monitor itself with the vesa adapter

#

it's not adding 2399

#

can you imagine lol

#

don't buy a vesa monitor unless you're really going to put it on an arm though

#

because they don't come with a stand

#

it's a terrible design ><

#

I think they're awesome productivity screens but eh whatever floats your boat xD

jaunty light
#

hella terrible

sly elk
#

things that don't require >60hz gaming?

#

or HDR1000?

jaunty light
#

just buy an 8k problem solved

sly elk
#

the hard part is 60hz is hard to argue because >60hz makes for nicer scrolling?

#

but then?

#

my 120hz alienware screen could give me motion sickness watching a video that pans across a room

#

or animated panning

#

there's something about panning that it doesn't matter how many Hz the screen is, most LCDs can't do it

panning in cinema is a joke if they dont start using higher fps

and i doubt many gpus will do 5k gaming faster than 60fps anyway

jaunty light

just make panning like 48fps instead lmfao

the pro display does this better than the studio display fwiw

#

the prices are insane

#

but you buy the screen and then buy the stand or vesa mount, your choice

#

they should've done the studio display the same way

#

there is a stupid caveat though

#

you have to install the vesa adapter on the monitor before mounting it

#

you'd think they would've made it so you could mount the vesa adapter onto the arm and then just click the monitor into place

#

ah well

#

if they did this, the cheap stand would be $600 and the monitor would've cost $900

and people woulda lost their shit at that

glossy magnet
#

Need someone with a bit more of a brain than I have when it comes to temperature and PC cooling.

If the ambient air in the room is X, then the ambient air in the case, which is used to cool the components cannot go lower than X, correct?

As I mentioned last week my GPU has been roughly around 83c when I have XIV open, and out of curiosity I cranked my GPU fans to 100% for 5 minutes with XIV open.
The temperatures did not drop, not even by 1c, with the fans going from 50-60% speed to 100%.

After closing the game and for again ~5 minutes after my GPU is now sitting around 40-53c with the fans at 100%.

Now I'm not saying my room is 83c pretty sure I'd be dead from heat stroke.
But my room is rather warm due to where I live, Florida only knows of Summer. If it's due to the ambient temperature in my room will I just not get below 83c?
(during the colder months I remember seeing ~60/70c when XIV was open, and eventually would rise to the 80s).

hard drift
#

A lot of things to factor, airflow, cooling capability, ambient temperature. Has nothing else changed?

#

Someone else will have to take over if i don’t respond, about to clock in for work

glossy magnet
#

The only thing that has changed is ambient room temps, due to the raising temperatures outside, my house gets hotter too.
Other than that I cleaned my PC up of dust and what not, I managed to spill a little tea in the case but it didn't really make too much of a mess inside.
A drop here and there. (cup was basically empty)

hard drift
#

How much has ambient increased because it’s very possible that’s the sole factor

glossy magnet
#

I don't monitor my room's actual temperature much, but the outside has gone from high 60s to low 90s over the past month or two (depending on the day)
right now it's ~80f outside my AC is set to 70 but my room is very noticeably warmer than the rest of the house.

hard drift
#

Well assuming ambient increased that much it’s very likely the reason. I’d keep a wall thermometer nearby to get an idea for the future

glossy magnet
#

I see.
I'll look into getting one, so basically nothing to worry about, to my knowledge 85c and around there is "normal" for a 980ti, albeit slightly high.
And considering my room temps even at 100% the fans won't really do that much in reducing temps, right?
assuming that is the reason the temp is what it is at.

hard drift
#

Yeah pretty much

#

Also depending on how old it is, could look at deep cleaning gpu/repasting it

glossy magnet
#

this card is pushing 8 years I think.

hard drift
#

Since you’ve owned it?

#

I’d deep clean and repaste it personally, might do some wonders

glossy magnet
#

Yeah since I've bought it.
Is that any more difficult than repasting a CPU and reseating it?
Same thermal paste can be used?

hard drift
#

Yes because of the fan cables and screws but not too complex usually

hard drift
#

Okay, shift is starting now so, find a video on teardown and then go from there on cleaning see if you can do it and go from there. Can help a fair bit

glossy magnet
#

Ok thanks for the info

#

good luck at work.

hard drift
#

Np, good luck

deep sapphire
# glossy magnet this card is pushing 8 years I think.

The thermal paste is probably still serviceable but it wouldn’t hurt to repaste it, the biggest culprit is dust though, give it a good dusting and it should dramatically improve your temperatures if you don’t want to take your card apart

#

If it’s a blower style card those are notorious for accumulating a wall of dust at the edge of the heat sink and fan assembly which prohibits a lot of airflow

glossy magnet
#

I clean the dust out of my PC fairly often, it never really gets that dusty (aside from between the radiator and case/fans for the cpu).
This is the card I have.

#

Any dust would probably be in super compact areas like between the card and backplate or something.

#

where I can't get from casually cleaning

deep sapphire
#

Nah that wouldn’t really impact cooling as long as the heat sink is clean, the cooling between the components and heat sink is entirely passive. I would suggest repasting it then, buy some thermal pads for your power delivery components and video ram as well.

If your case has a dust filter make sure that’s clean as well

glossy magnet
#

It has a filter on the bottom and front.
front is where my intake is, bottom just has the PSU and an empty spot for a fan.
top has none, but is exhaust for the rad.

#

I clean those often as well.

#

I haven't used thermal pads before, any recommendations?

deep sapphire
#

Sounds good, rule out dust and airflow being the issue. As bidori said above probably just old crusty thermal paste

glossy magnet
#

paste too, considering the last one I used was also like 5 years ago, Artic Silver 5.

#

(for the cpu)

Outus 30 Pieces 67 x 20 mm Silicone Thermal Pad Reusable Thermal Conductive Silicone Pad Each Thick 0.5/1/ 1.5 mm Pack of 10 Pieces for GPU Heatsink CPU Chip Heat Conduction or LED Heat Conduction https://www.amazon.com/dp/B094PWW9TM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_P0EA3BWBB511F9SDFN80

#

This is probably overkill but anything cheap is fine

#

Just use a pair of scissors to cut out the size you need

deep sapphire
#

Thermal solder is another option that’s a permanent solution but has more risk to using it

glossy magnet
#

Do thermal pads replace the need for paste? AbbyThink
the photos just show them throwing it on like every component in the pc lol

deep sapphire
#

Nope, these are for components that have composite cases like you see on memory modules and the like

#

Don’t use them on the GPU it doesn’t have enough heat transfer

glossy magnet
#

Ah ok.
They had a photo with a CPU so thought it was just like, a solid paste or something lol.

deep sapphire
#

Those typically use thermal paste but it’s in a pre defined square or circular application if that makes sense

#

These are a bit different

#

What you’re thinking of is common with solutions that are ready to go for the common person who doesn’t know or care about applying aftermarket compound and works good enough

glossy magnet
#

I see.

#

Just for the sake of comparison, are thermal pads like ice packs for a PC?
slap em on where heat builds up and help cool it?

deep sapphire
#

Thermal pads are better for components that have composite because thermal paste is a liquid metal and don’t transfer heat as well from a different material

glossy magnet
#

I see.
I'll keep the two products you mentioned down and see what I can do.
Thank you.

deep sapphire
#

No problem 😄

#

Yeah all thermal paste and pads do is create a surface bond that allows heat to transfer better due to hard surfaces not having perfect level, if any imperfections are created between 2 surfaces air will take up that space and heat won’t be able to transfer between those 2 surfaces well. Having a paste or pad helps remedy that

glossy magnet
deep sapphire
#

Lmao

glossy magnet
#

Does make me question their photos though.
Like this lol.

deep sapphire
#

You’re like “wtf am I reading I just wanted to know what to buy”

deep sapphire
glossy magnet
#

from the Amazon page you sent lol

deep sapphire
#

Hahaha

#

Maybe they just wanted to show the size or something I dunno

#

Usually those heat sinks used soldered thermal compound because they aren’t designed to be serviced for the life of the product

glossy magnet
#

They also have a photo of it just on a m.2 drive lol

deep sapphire
#

Soldered compound is basically a cement, once it’s set you can’t remove it, and if you try to remove the heat sink off with enough force you will end up destroying your processor

glossy magnet
#

hopefully you never need to swap your cooler

deep sapphire
#

It’s very rare those ever need to be serviced so should be fine on that 😄

glossy magnet
#

or if your mobo dies, gotta take it off to get the CPU lol.
I think I'll definitely stick with the paste/pads lol.
I do need a PC upgrade but not with the prices as they are now.

deep sapphire
#

Yeah just use a quality thermal paste on the GPU it’s more than fine

#

IC Diamond is a good option just place the tube in some hot tap water for 10 minutes before you apply it cause it’s pretty hard shit and you’ll have a hard time getting it out of the tube

glossy magnet
#

Ah ok.
I may as well repaste my CPU at the same time I guess lol.

deep sapphire
#

Yeah if it’s been about the same time frame doesn’t hurt

glossy magnet
#

I think it's been 4 years for the CPU

#

with the same 8yr old (ish) paste

deep sapphire
glossy magnet
#

bought the paste with my PC components, and just kept it around.
It was still paste-like when I went to apply it so I figured it was fine.
I've thrown it out by now though.

deep sapphire
#

That’s alright I’m not even sure if it has a shelf life since it’s just liquid metal basically

#

If the jif peanut butter in my pantry expired in 2003 I’m sure your thermal paste is fine

I mean what

potent arrow

The simple answer to that is USB itself, universal serial bus, the bus part basically means multiple devices can use this line to communicate. Each device has a unique address etc they essentially take turns talking and the controller on the splitter or on the board dictates how long each address talks for and when.

sly elk
#

nvm it's not a mini fit jr

molex 8981 or AMP MATE-N-LOK

outer sand
#

Does it work differently with PC?

potent arrow
#

sly elk
potent arrow
#

Windows bluetooth audio drivers

#

Are fucking attrocious

sly elk
#

In October 1963, AMP (now TE Connectivity) introduced the Mate-n-Lok connector.[3] The AMP connector was similar to the patented Molex connectors but not interchangeable. Both were widely used in the computer industry and the term "Molex connector" is often inaccurately used to refer to all nylon plugs and receptacles.

potent arrow
#

And an afront to man

sly elk
#

hahahahaha

potent arrow
#

@sly elk fucking NEEEEERD

outer sand
#

dahell, I enver knew

sly elk
#

this bothers me

#

i wonder how often the amp connector is used and mixed with molex connectors

#

The Molex 8981 series was only produced in a 4 position option, unlike the Mate-n-Lok family which includes many other contact arrangements. Molex has since discontinued the 8981 series, but the original Mate-n-Lok connectors remain available from TE Connectivity.

outer sand
#

ok, maybe this is it for now, I'll research further later 😹 ty ty for the info

sly elk
#

so if you see one of those now it's not even made by molex anymore haha

#

oh i'm sorry for going off the deep end on that one xD

outer sand
#

maybe I'll try it first with my surface and see if this bluetooth earpiece+mic works..

sly elk
#

so here's the problem

#

if you buy a bluetooth headset that has a mic

#

it can be used as headphones or as a headset with mic

sly elk
#

Wow, real laser interception system 👀 congratulations to Israel.

Israel has successfully tested the new “Iron Beam” laser interception system.

This is the world’s first energy-based weapons system that uses a laser to shoot down incoming UAVs, rockets & mortars at a cost of $3.50 per shot.

It may sound like science fiction, but it's real.

odd sand

Isn't that why they put up the construction cement partitions, so you can dive behind them if there is incoming fire?

deep sapphire
#

but the C-RAM systems are pretty good at defusing the situation

odd sand
#

I suppose they can see better than you, so just look for the BWWRRRRRRR tracers

deep sapphire

haha pretty much

Supposedly the Muskva had point defenses as well, but shared radar with the AA, so didnt see the missiles coming in the blind spot

outer sand
#

#

so I'll need to get rid of the current pcie? also I don't get where I will get the molex from

#

is it from my PSU?

jaunty light
#

Might be better to relo the bottom to the top to see if it interferes with your fan shroud

#

Looks smaller overall

sly elk
#

huh

#

looks like lots of room

#

remember the card is facing down

#

the molex connector will also be facing down

#

oh hah nvm I see what you're trying to do now

#

didn't realize the slot that wifi adapter thingy is in, was filled

#

you could move that one up

#

or maybe do some hacky bs with a riser cable

outer sand
#

I don't mind removing the wifi one, it's very old one and I bought it when I stayed in another house where I didn't have access to ethernet right beside my PC

#

yeah, maybe I'll just do that, might be too risky to put the GPU way too close to the PCIE

sly elk
#

there's no risk if they aren't touching

outer sand
#

the chip in the PC doesn't heat up?

#

yeah I realised it too late that I no longer used the wifi card ._.

sharp kernel
#

Can I post here about pc help?

#

Hello guys.

I already bought few things. What I got is:
CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
Motherboard - Asus Rog Strix B550-E
SSD - Samsung 980 Pro
RAM - Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32 GB
PSU - Asus Rog Strix 750W 80 Plus Gold

As for case I have totally no idea, was thinking about Pure Base 500DX but I'm not sure, cooler - noctua nh-d15 but I saw some alternatives like Scythe Fuma so Im not sure here aswell (dont even know if it would match in the case) and gpu - 3070ti/3080 with 3 fans of course. Second ssd is not a problem that's why not mentioned.

I hope somebody can put me on the right direction because I'm a total greeny in that. It's the first pc Im building.

Thanks!

@ me please!

sly elk
#

but vielen you'll probably be fine, if it fits. looks like the wifi card doesn't even get to where the fans are

#

and even if they were almost touching, yea no worries about heat

#

i expect the 5600x doesn't run that hot, so any of those CPU coolers should be fine

#

the nh-d15 is always a top recommendation for air coolers because it will probably keep your temps lowest and be the quietest.... might even be a little overkill for a 5600x, no harm in that though

#

as for the case, I think it will be a balance between your budget, your taste, and performance?
