Go buy chrome cd at the store bitch

sly elk

and the gov would never have cracked down on GM like that

deep sapphire
#

GM deserved a lot more punishment for the whole ignition switch fiasco

sly elk
#

yea that's exactly what I'm thinking about

#

you could have a raw video footage from the board room

#

with the CEO being like

#

"fuck these poor idiots that buy GM cars, I drive a BMW"

#

"let them crash and die"

deep sapphire
#

the fact that they uncovered internal emails showing they knew it was defective, quietly revised it with the same exact part number and pretended like nothing happened

sly elk

and then the people in DC would be like

"this is really serious so we might have to fine them"

#

Volkswagen detects when your tests are being run in a CI server, and makes them pass.

#

reminds me of a piece of software I work with

#

or used to work with, anyway

#

it has this really convoluted stupid build process

#

and if any step of that process fails it just continues on

#

sometimes it'll build the binary and everything too, and then the only way you'll know is someone will complain about a very odd error for some specific thing

and it's very much a "PC LOAD LETTER" deal

that is a chonker

tbh they look really gross

i think it's funny how common these dual tv living room setups are becoming

jaunty light
jaunty light
#

Thonk why's your game look so much nicer than mine

odd sand
#

Why would they have to save for years for that? You can get tvs that size for like 300 bucks.

#

And if that's a living room, they must be in San Fran lol

jaunty light
#

why you wearin a hat

#

thats not fantasy at all!

royal forge
#

Hmmm....

#

guys, quick Q

#

a while ago, I was talking about how there's little space for me to have a desktop

#

was suggested I get a monitor arm

#

I got a near identical table like this

#

width is about.. 120cm?

#

i was wondering

#

how intrusive is a monitor arm

#

can you attach 2 monitors to a single arm?

jaunty light
#

not much but depends on where u can mount it that thing has a solid back looks like

royal forge
#

nah it dont

jaunty light
#

single mount dual arms would be your solution

sly elk
#

there are several kinds of monitor arm, generally they're actually considered 'less invasive' than having a monitor on a stand, but it depends

#

like if your table is against a wall or surrounded by walls

jaunty light
#

if your desk is right on hte wall yeah

sly elk
#

it'll really reduce the amount of flexibility you can utilize

jaunty light
#

your monitors will be too close to your face

sly elk
#

unless you arrange the arm so that it's coming from the side or something

royal forge
#

it's directly backed by a wall

sly elk
#

also the shitty part about flexibility is it requires a lot of cable, and even then, they generally are a lot clumsier to move around than you'd think >>

#

unless you YOLO it and just leave the cables hanging off the back/bottom of your screens hahahahah

royal forge
#

hmm.. alright

sly elk
#

-tries to rotate screen- -hdmi cable rips out of socket-

royal forge
#

so maybe no desktop for me yet then

sly elk
#

eh?

royal forge
#

seems.. a hassle?

sly elk
#

I think they're mostly fine though

#

so the two most common kind of dual monitor thingies are

#

this kind

royal forge
#

ah, but i see most are attached via the back?

#

is there any that can come from the side?

#

my bed is right next to my table so...

#

maybe i can have movie night on my bed

sly elk
#

and i thihk this kind

royal forge
#

if I move the arm

sly elk
#

so yea the first one can totally be put on the side

#

and is actually ideal on the side

royal forge
#

ooo

sly elk
#

there's also a variant that's kinda halfway between those

#

one arm but double headed

#

i think those are expensive though lol

#

but if you mount from the side your arm can come straight out and be against the wall

#

hehe i used them at work but not a fan of them at home

jaunty light
#

those are a bit screwy tbh

#

not a lot of versatility

royal forge
#

ah i see..

sly elk
#

so to change topic for a sec

#

my kitchen's uh... cook... top

#

turned out it leaked XD

royal forge
#

where is the leaking

#

also, god damn, built in stove?

sly elk
#

the kitchen configuration is infuriating

#

there's that cooktop, and a pair of (small) wall ovens

#

when we moved in I was really annoyed because none of our pans fit in the oven lol

#

also the wall ovens were leaking gas when we moved in because the owner pulled it out to fix himself, and he broke the valve when he pulled it out

#

we just went through a mess of drama with the gas company because he did the same with the furnace

#

He didn't tell me he did, but after getting a good look at how it was installed, i think he did it himself

jaunty light
deep sapphire
sly elk
#

idk what's so cringe about playing video games?

deep sapphire
#

I dunno but to me when you're in a relationship you need personal space, if your PCs are literally ass end of eachother you have no personal space and it'd feel like you're essentially spending your personal time always around SO

#

that'd drive me insane and I would never do this

#

I have no issue playing games together but that can be done in separate rooms

sly elk
#

lol honestly i've never lived in a house big enough to have too much personal space

#

but chilling out on the same sofa together in the evening, even if watching different tvs? that.. sounds like a pretty good relationship

#

idk how to explain that one to ya

dull garnet
#

Does your Chevy need a pc Hank?

sly elk
#

yea it doesn't have to be every night

dull garnet
sly elk
#

and people usually do have personal spaces I think

#

idk, is the simpsons concept really that weird?

#

back in the day my mom had 3 sofas in the living room lol

it was glorious

#

so much sofa space

jaunty light
#

hank and I are the same person apparently

#

personal space 😔 need like 50 meters of it and hours alone

sly elk

blah

#

yea we both can agree the 3080ti and 3090 love that juice

jaunty light
#

pcie and eps are keyed different aren't they

#

or did they just keep it the same on the psu end

dull garnet
#

looks like they are on my EVGA

but not on those Corsair

#

this is why you can't mix brands with modular cabling

odd sand
#

At 22500 miles they recommend rotor and pad replacement. At 37500 a full coolant and transmission flush and drive belt replacement 🤔

kindred brook
#

yes miles

#

wow thats alot

odd sand
#

I think some are a set time or mileage. Others have a sensor that looks for the color of the oil and warns when it gets too dirty.

#

I might take mine in a bit early bc I'm still mildly concerned about that pothole we hit doing something to the bearing or such.

odd sand
#

They wrote cabin filter replacement at 15000 and 22500, but none of the checkpoints after that 🤔

sly elk
#

I'm surprised they actually say this in writing, th ough

#

"Once your Kia Stinger passes the 22,500-mile threshold, you'll return to the shop and undergo a range of procedures that includes a brake pad replacement-if you didn't have this done at 15,000 miles"

#

new rotors at 15k miles?!

#

what are their rotors made out of? wood?!

#

i don't even think they change the brake rotors on porsches at a track experience center that often

odd sand
#

I will say that bedding new pads on existing rotors can be a PITA bc they can squeal then or vibrate

sly elk
#

yea but if someone told me i needed new pads at 25k

#

it would either be because I went to a few track days and came in requesting it, or I measured them and requested it, or the dealer is sketchy and I need a second opinion o_O

#

that might just be my driving habits, though

odd sand
#

Although that was with standard consumer brakes. The Stinger has Brembo pads and drilled rotors so it's entirely possible they don't have that issue being thicker than normal

sly elk
#

the most miles i've ever put on a car was the first 300c we had, and in 107k I never even changed the brake pads haha

#

which surprised me

odd sand
#

Uhh yeah. That seems odd.

sly elk
#

I checked it, had a mechanic check it, had a friend who used to do my dad's brakes check it

#

I must be easy on brakes...

#

it's possible the drilled rotors eat pads quicker

odd sand
#

I bought my Mazda6 at 40k and I think I didn't have to change the rotors/pads until over 100k which I thought was quite good. My Saturn was more like every 25k like it said

#

The thing is, the stiffer pads last longer but also have less stopping power

sly elk
#

idk, I'd still check around

odd sand
#

So part of the reason I changed mine more often was I went with sport pads for better braking on my Saturn

sly elk
#

oh wait the 25k is for brake pads, not rotors

#

why did I misread that xD

#

looking at this https://www.kiaownersclub.co.uk/threads/brake-pad-life-span.58439/ it sounds like that 15-25k number might just be how long those last

#

but there's also some comments there saying they still had life at 40k, so ymmv

odd sand
#

It's possible they replaced the brakes and rotors when I bought it bc it had 17500 on it and they both looked brand new

#

They basically bet on people with the fancier cars not questioning the maintenance costs

sly elk
#

on a 100k car maybe idk

#

I would expect the vast majority of people are going to decline almost all of the recommended services and only replace things when they have to be replaced. xd

#

regardless of brand haha

#

I am all for changing fluids at reasonable intervals and changing belts/brake pads/whatever as needed. When the cadillac dealer said our car needed a uh.. walnut blasting the heads? because DI engine? I was like WTF I've never heard of that before, no.

they want those cards gone before the 40 series hits retail channels, so they don't end up with a shitload of cards nobody wants like the 10/20 series

latent grotto
#

They're just gonna price gouge the 40 series

#

By setting the msrp really high from the beginning

umbral moss
#

nvidia's stock took a giant shit right after the 20 series came out because they had a metric fuckton of 10 series cards they made in anticipation of crypto getting even bigger and the bottom falling out on them

#

if they're trying to unload inventory now they must have in-hand 40 series samples

#

nah, the 4080 is a different uarch thankfully

they'd have some real issues if they tried to sell ampere as lovelace

sly elk

honestly i don't know if I'd want to drive out to the tustin microcenter XD

The MSRPs were significantly higher even for the 30 series if not for covid

umbral moss
#

nah, crypto plus rule 4 dipshittery allowing GPUs to be tariffed at +30%

#

which manufacturers absolutely had no intention of eating

odd sand
#

eg: 770 MSRP was 299, 970 was 329, 1070 was 379, 2070 was 499

hard drift
#

20 series was overpriced and 30 series was cheaper than it for the most part

odd sand
#

AFAIK the msrp stayed the same for the 20 and 30 series bc as you said they were overpriced and didnt sell well

hard drift
#

if anything, this generation is cheaper at msrp

odd sand
#

Even then it still puts 30 series ahead of the curve if you look at the prices from 7-9-10

sly elk
#

(you can also do this with office 365 personal -> office 365 family)

#

taking advantage of MS' generosity lol

odd sand
#

It's a mixed bag. 3080 for 699 was "fair" but the 3080 12GB is 50% more MSRP so I'm gonna be very shocked if they "give back" that MSRP to consumers with the 4000 series

hard drift
umbral moss
odd sand
#

There are plenty of examples of companies protecting their brand by enforcing prices

sly elk
#

yea, to be fair

umbral moss
#

the 40 series isn't demonstrably more expensive to produce so the margins should be similar

#

the reason there was a huge jump from 20 to 30 is because they went to a much more expensive node

sly elk
#

if you sell a product for X and then a group of people mobs the stores and buys them all to resell on ebay for $2*X

hard drift
sly elk
#

you underpriced your product

hard drift
odd sand
#

eg: I got my Smith ski helmet in tahoe for the same price as they were listed where I lived bc Smith enforces the same MSRP

sly elk
#

and everyone loses in that scenario

hard drift
#

that's what people don't understand

#

the msrp of 20 series was actually terrible

sly elk
#

except for the people who buy the underpriced parts and then scalp them on ebay

odd sand
#

Otherwise you know for sure they would have marked up the gear being in a tourist spot

outer sand
#

Apple is more like, create a nonsense and unpractical problem and sell the solution 👀

hard drift
#

you figure a 2080ti is exactly what a 3080ti costs at msrp

outer sand
#

but pushovers still buy it anyway

sly elk
#

the buyers lose, because most GPU warranties are not transferable, so when you buy a scalped GPU you get no warranty

umbral moss
sly elk
#

you also have very little recourse if you receive a defective/dead GPU

odd sand
#

That is missing the issue of: If a concerted group works like a cartel and consistently buys up all stock so you either pay their prices or have nothing

umbral moss
#

hope you enjoy your non-adjustable monitor arm that can't be swapped with a VESA mount

#

and costs $1000

sly elk
#

and the manufacturer built the thing to a $699 budget when they could've built it to a $1099 budget

#

and used better fans/shroud/parts

#

or ate the profit, or used some of it as R&D money

#

or something

odd sand
#

the 1080 was 599 and the 1080ti 699. The 3080 was 699 and the 3080ti 1199 ... HMM...

hard drift
#

the 20 series was the biggest jump in prices

sly elk
#

I mean all of them

hard drift
#

30 series if comparing to 20 series prices atleast there's a performance increase that justifies prices vs 20/10

odd sand
#

So you want people to get fleeced?

sly elk
#

the only apple monitor that was height adjustable out of the box was the original studio display LCD

umbral moss
#

I just want to play video games with a powerful GPU REEEEEE

odd sand
#

These GPU prices continuing is going to cripple the PC gaming market

outer sand
#

buy PS5 👀

#

powerful GPU

hard drift
#

you figure a 3060 is cheaper than a 2060 was at msrp

odd sand
#

Exactly. Why the fuck is a parent going to buy their kid a gaming PC for $2500 that can only handle 1080p when they could get them a PS5 for like 20% the price that can do 4K

sly elk
#

and this wasn't VESA mountable either

hardy mauve
odd sand
#

That's bc 20 and 10 were essentially the same raster perf. And usually Nvidia goes up 1 notch per gen. IE: A 70 of the last gen is about equal to the 60 of the current gen.

#

Then the 30 jumped to the normal raster curve

sly elk
#

maybe the top 2 screws

hardy mauve
sly elk
#

but yea, the current studio & xdr displays are probably the first ones they've sold with VESA options

hard drift
#

if new cards come out at the end of the year, forget tariffs, they'll go back up unless renewed

sly elk
#

you could buy a vesa adapter for older imacs from like 2010 to 2015 or so

#

after that you could order an imac with a vesa plate attached to the back instead of the stand

#

(same is currently true of the studio display)

I'm not entirely sure why the imacs are like that, but the studio display is likely too thin to have the 4 holes for vesa on the back

#

which is weird because it's not that thin

#

let's face it, their industrial designers are completely anal about aesthetics

#

"How could I mar this beautiful seamless finish with 4 screw holes!"

ah, four magnets justifies the "pro" designation

I don't think the bracket that comes on the vesa option is pretty, either.

#

if apple is so concerned about aesthetics they should just make their own vesa arm 😄

that sounds complicated, why do that when they can just, like, not
