Older engines were non interference (not all but a lot of them were) which basically means the piston stroke doesn’t travel high enough to touch the valves

If the belt broke you’d be stranded but your engine would survive

It sucks though because the labor is pretty expensive they are a bitch to work on

They usually recommend you get your water pump replaced as that is attached to the drive belt

Cause if the pump fails after you get the belt replaced guess what, they have to take the belt off again and charge you 1000 bucks in labor

Suspension at least is something that doesn't damage the car if neglected except in extreme cases. I changed the front shocks on my Saturn at 150k and never bothered with the rear bc it was so light
