UPS isn't designed to let you keep trucking like nothing happened, it's meant to allow you to do a graceful shutdown.
(Or usually in my case, I put the PC in sleep mode and leave the router/modem connected to the UPS as well. That setup is good for around 4-6hrs.)

so your computer is always going to refresh the monitor at 144hz, regardless of what the game does

if your screen has gsync or freesync or whatever, then the screen can internally match the frequency so you don't see image tearing
with gsync I think if your game is outputting say 70fps, the screen will adjust to 70hz or something
