@hard drift well yeah

I'm just saying what price they will be once they hit the shelf

Oof

So we might not see it even with no scalpers

hard drift

It’s up to aibs to make a msrp model

#

And given what people pay not likely lmao

cedar arch
#

.3. I'm saying what they priced it at themselves

cedar arch
#

They announced the price of 3050s will be 250, and no price announced for the 3090tis

hard drift
#

The 3090 will be 2k no doubt

cedar arch
#

Probably

dreamy chasm

400 scalper price

cedar arch

Scalpers triple the price

So 750

400 will be aib price I’m sure

I wonder if me staying with defender is a bad thing

I occasionally do install bit defender and malwarebytes for a deep scan, but I uninstall it right after

windows defender is generally fine unless you're in the habit of visiting shady sites and downloading random shit

Alright then yeah use any flavor of Linux but one with a live OS option so you don’t have to install it and then you can just copy the files to another drive

Different positions may have different requirements, so work hours vary, according to the principal engineer. “An equipment engineer might start work at 8 o’clock in the morning and leave around 9 o’clock at night, but is it normal? This may happen two or three days a week. On a production line, the equipment must be maintained.

“If you are a process engineer, it will be more stable. Maybe you can start work at 8:30 a.m.and leave before 7:30 p.m. If there are some urgent matters, you may have to stay later.”

#

can now cap in 4k though

#

so I guess it's worth it

hard drift
#

one of your slots dead?

dreamy chasm

there's the power play of just buying a riser to tape onto part of your case

pretty sure not. it's the second physical pciex16 slot and had a cap card in it before that worked fine (*fine as in would make the system crash waking up fdrom sleep)

that would be smart but I am not the smart

inochiRip ($135 is kinda too much for my fun budget at the moment)

hard drift
#

i mean it's something to keep in mind for what you want deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerp

#

i just knew of it for multi channel out because i daily drive it

paper tusk
#

yeah unless i get an old one, pray it still works on win 10 (with the unofficial xfi driver pack) and mod the guts out with better op amp, better grounding, and maybe better caps

hard drift
#

i wonder what this one looks like under the hood HMM

paper tusk
#

that's the pcie card though which i have right now

#

i think the usb xfi is pretty similar overall

#

maybe a pci to usb bridge added on

#

and if creative is nice, sockets for the opamps to not have to solder SMD's

#

something based on a CM6206 might work also but the quality of the dac is going to be a lot less than my current internal x-fi (which I got because had to give up a relatively nice on board realtek 1220 on my old asrock because it took a shit and had to get a msi on short notice)

sly elk

-types away to check if his monitors shake-

#

nope

#

do you have your monitors on an arm?

jaunty light
#

Yup

sly elk
#

oh, that explains it

#

what kinda arm?

#

I'm honestly not sure which type is worse for wobbling

#

plus I've never used a good arm like the ergotron ones

#

we have a few brands at work that I've seen and they all wobble

#

but all the monitor arms in the office have the same general design as an ergotron arm, just cheaper

#

it wouldn't surprise me if your monitor arm is just magnifying the vibrations into wobble

#

and the only real solution to that would be to wall mount the monitor arms

#

and ergotron does make a sliding rail wall mount thing, but it looks kinda gross and I wouldn't be surprised if someone forgot to move their monitors before moving their desk XD

jaunty light
#

Ergotron is one, then a cheap one that i use for stack

sly elk
#

I wonder if changing the direction of the clamp/arm helps

#

like maybe if you had a T shape frame and the table was shaking back/forth as you typed, having the monitor arm in the back and the monitor cantilevered forward might shake more than if the monitor arm was clamped to the side and the monitor was cantilevered from the side

#

i doubt it though

potent arrow
#

I need to find a good monitor arm ngl

#

tempted to grab this lol

#

spray paint it pink or something

high harness
#

A good attempt that you should try is, if you're using a monitor mount that uses a C-clamp style or grommet stamp, is to use a piece of wood on the underside of the table to help distribute the weight and clamp force.

Also using thick enough paddings (both on top of and below where it clamps) help dampen vibrations a bit, and protects your desk from excessive force from the clamps/load from the weight of your monitors.

Check whether your monitor mount ends up having a bit of play after you install/clamp it. If you feel like you can sway it even a tiny bit, figure out where it's swaying at. Some desks (especially Ikea LINNMON tops) are relatively hollow, so they're not the greatest for clamps or centralized weights. This is the case for one of my desks, and the solution that solved the excessive pressure problem as well as the vibration problem (similar to yours) was to add wood above and below where I clamped it. The woods are about 4 x 8 x .5 inch birch wood. You can use any hardwood and dimension you can depending on what limits you may have with your desk.

umbral moss
#

using hardwood seems like a very expensive solution to a cheap desk problem

#

especially since shitty softwood like pine or poplar will make a perfectly fine sacrifice pad

#

no sense burning money on like, red oak or maple when the weak link is your shitty ass LDF/melamine desk sandwich anyway

high harness
#

My bad I didn't mean to say hardwood, I mean to say any wood that's hard enough, so not particle board and cheap plywood

umbral moss
#

ye

#

baltic birch isn't the worst for sacrifice pads either

#

since it's pretty reinforced compared to cheaper plywood

sly elk
#

there are metal clamp plates you can buy, too

#

lol mdf desktops are fun

#

they gave me a brand new ikea one at my internship and I proceeded to leave a nice big gash in the surface when I installed my monitor mount thingy

#
#

something like that, and there's a whole lot of these on amazon

#

(I have an irrational fear of clamping a monitor arm to a glass desk. I pondered doing it with one of those and still thought: NOPE

jaunty light
#

I would as well

#

Seems dangerous to have that much force applied to any glass

umbral moss
#

tempered glass is tough until it isn't

untold onyx
#

yeah, tempered glass can take a lot of stress. When it hits it's limit though it is just gone.

#

See, this is the one I have. Works really well too.

sly elk
#

i mean

#

edge clamps are how a whole lot of glass fixtures are mounted though (shelves and stuff)

#

definitely wouldn't do it on an office store desk though

sly elk
#

yea don't drop a sledge hammer on it

#

making me think i should've gone with laminated glass 😛

#

in case one of you comes to visit me and throws a sledgehammer at my desk 😛

jaunty light
umbral moss
#

laminated glass will just break into sticky chunks instead of spiky chunks

deep sapphire
#

Laminated glass usually doesn’t break in pieces though unless you use a lot of force

glossy timber
#

honestly if you're not using a lot of force whats the point

#

loser mindset

sly elk
#

what about

#

realizing it's a glass table and just.. being nice to it...

#

I don't make a habit of leaving spark plugs on my table, or ceramic objects with sharp edges so...

umbral moss
#

monitors don't seem heavy until your glass is like "ok that's enough shear stress for me, thanks" shatters

odd sand
#

I think there's been some routing issues with the internet today. Reddit was giving me 500 and 504 errors, for example.

#

And a few other things were lagging

umbral moss
#

maybe aws went down again

dreamy chasm
sly elk
#

i like how it looks with white plastidip

#

iirc plastidip has a kinda sticky texture to it though

umbral moss
#

it does

#

I used white plastidip to coat the mounts for my pumps so they wouldn't buzz with vibration

#

the real problem with white cases is that they show dust mad fast and end up turning beige from exposure

#

all the plastic on my white case aged into this kind of off-white

dreamy chasm
#

I wonder why you can't just seal that with a clear coat of some kind to prevent that

umbral moss
#

for dust, maybe

#

but the plastic degrading is a function of UV and air exposure, I suppose a polyurethane coating might protect you a little but PU coatings are also UV sensitive and yellow over time

sly elk
#

yuck

#

that's why I originally avoided white/beige computer hardware

vestal crane
#

How often is your computer in direct sunlight?

sly elk
#

luckily for me, all of the white parts of my keyboard are easily replaceable

dreamy chasm
#

I like beige stuff, but I'm also a noctua simp

sly elk
#

oh even if you don't, sometimes they'll yellow up like a mofo

#

my brother had an imac g4

#

sadly was stolen when it was a few years old, but he still had the original keyboard in a box in the closet

#

with some clothes and stuff

dreamy chasm
sly elk
#

the keyboard was practically new, but when i pulled it out of the box one day it was yellow

#

disgusting yellow

dreamy chasm
#

Those can be restored

vestal crane
#

Intentional beige looks way better than white thats yellowed to beige

dreamy chasm
#

For sure

sly elk
#

it was like this but much worse

#

nah beige looks nasty when it turns yellow

sly walrus
#

i remember that keyboard

sly elk
#

haha here

umbral moss
sly elk
#

when it gets bad it turns orange

umbral moss
#

the "warm white" is just a daylight bulb with an orange filter painted on it

sly elk
#

also I had the green version of that monitor

#

thing gave me nightmares

vestal crane
#

Fair

sly elk
#

lmao this computer was my first

#

exactly like that one

umbral moss
#

ah man, I had a fuckin tandy back in 93

sly elk
#

yea gbut this was in like 96 or 97

umbral moss
#

state of the baller art with 4MB of ram

#

👌

sly elk
#

but I'll give you this

#

it had a working hard drive

#

32mb

dreamy chasm
#

You can bathe plastic in hydrogen peroxide and clean the yellowing off, apparently

sly elk
#

and I really really wanted a computer

#

and it was an old one someone gave my dad and he gave me and I was like

#

YESSS FINALLY!

#

when I was a kid I wanted a computer so bad I made one out of cardboard 😄

dreamy chasm
#

That's cute

#

I was a simple kid and just wanted to play flash games

sly elk
#

my brother and my dad took college classes on computer stuff and I got into all their books

#

then picked up more books from a library sale that were ancient haha

umbral moss
sly elk
#

there was one gem I wonder if I still have laying around in the garage

umbral moss
#

👌

sly elk
#

that covered "micro computers"

#

and "mini computers" - the ones that were the size of a desk lol

dreamy chasm
#

Destined to be a computer nerd from birth

#

Not that it's a bad thing

sly elk
#

I mean

#

that complete set is $400 + 164 shipping

#

on ebay? That's kinda expensive for an 8088 I think

#

but overall it's not bad. those things cost like $2-3k new

#

sadly it looks like the HDD might be dead in that one, though

dreamy chasm
#

Oof

sly elk
#

but outside of that, ti looks really nice

#

I think you can do better though

dreamy chasm
#

Can't wait for the day that current gpus are considered vintage

sly elk
#

ugh

#

but this make sme hungry for some vintage computer hardware

dreamy chasm
sly elk
#

that said

#

i'd rather not fuck with mono monitors ever again

dreamy chasm
#

I wonder how far you can get by refurbishing old vintage hardware from dumps and garage sales

sly elk
#

those flickering green on black screens will fuck you up good

#

you sit there for an hour

#

get up, and everything's red

dreamy chasm
#

Oh?

#

Ah

#

I can imagine

sly elk
#

and that was when I was a kid lmao

dreamy chasm
#

It'd probably fuck me up if I had to use those

sly elk
#

yea everyone looks at CRTs now through pleasant romanticized memories

dreamy chasm
#

My eyes are already fucked as it is

#

crts are great until you have to use them for extended periods

sly elk
#

they're cool but a massive pain in the butt

#

the tech is really cool though

dreamy chasm
#

For sure

umbral moss
sly elk
#

but you have to hvae a big desk and they're heavy and they make noise

#

and they're very delicate

dreamy chasm
#

high refresh displays these days aren't bad nor expensive either way

sly elk
#

I mean it's funny

#

my brother, when being a bit clumsy adjusting things on my table

#

knocked a 17" monitor off

umbral moss
#

the electron emitters in CRTs would need like 15x the activation energy if they weren't in a vacuum

sly elk
#

and at the time we were redoing the carpet in the house so the floor was bare plywood

#

it chipped a tiny piece of glass off the screen

#

but the screen worked perfectly fine another 5 years haha

umbral moss
#

poof

sly elk
#

what finally killed it was the vga cable wore out

#

like no amount of tape or holding it at weird angles would get a sync-able signal

#

i'm glad we don't have permanently attached video cables anymore.

#

also some monitors would just act funky sometimes

#

like if you played a game it'd drop to 640x480 or whatever and your monitor's geometry would change

#

or some modes would make it buzz more

dreamy chasm
#

The vga port probably can still be fixed

sly elk
#

and some pictures would just make the stupid screen geometry wonky

dreamy chasm
#

Would take some soldering though

sly elk
#

it's long gone

#

I don't have a single crt anymore

dreamy chasm
#

Understandable

sly elk
#

when we moved out of the house I grew up in, we got rid of the last 2 i had

dreamy chasm
#

I might buy one for shits and giggles if I find a good deal on one

#

Then again, they're so heavy that I'd have to leave it behind if I have to relocate

sly elk
#

one that someone gave me, and it looked awesome, but I never got to use it because it needed some weird cables that I could never find

#

and another was a miserable shitty 14"

umbral moss
#

CRTs are largely locked up in the smash brothers grognard arena last I heard

sly elk
#

that I always hated

umbral moss
#

people spending top dollar on shitty 15" hello kitty TVs because they're the only CRTs left that can play smash in The True Way

sly elk
#

the other thing you have to watch out for, is the higher end monitors had a habit of being less reliable

dreamy chasm
#

Don't people just use wiis with gc emu for smash tournaments now

sly elk
#

like the 21" sonys that everyoen drools over

#

i'm not saying don't buy one

umbral moss
sly elk
#

also

dreamy chasm
sly elk
#

going off memory

sly elk
#

there was one thing CRTs didn't do particularly well

#

and people will probably disagree with me on this

#

if you have a black square next to a white square

#

it will not be a perfect line between the two

#

at that, an OLED screen would be much better

umbral moss
#

that's not really something to disagree with, that's how the electron guns "paint" the image

sly elk
#

and pure black >>

#

unless you had a very high end CRT most of them had a kinda dark grey screen

umbral moss
#

too expensive and too unreliable

sly elk
#

ierno

#

OLEDs look amazing in the store >>

#

but a good trinitron or whatever looks amazing too

umbral moss
#

yeah, and then they experience half-life in about 1500 hours haha

sly elk
#

when you look at some pictures on them

#

it's like the LCDs are missing that extra oomph

#

however, a nice LCD with a perfect glossy finish will get awful close

umbral moss
#

LCDs are going to necessarily be less bright because of the combination of backlight requirements and the fact you have two polarizers to go through

sly elk
#

i wouldn't be surprised if a pro display xdr made pictures look better >>>

#

I really cannot complain about brightness

#

plus crt brightness only goes so far

umbral moss
#

OLEDs are also constrained by brightness

sly elk
#

iirc they sucked in direct sunlight

#

still, fun experience

umbral moss
#

CRTs are limited for the same reason as OLED, the phosphorescent component has a maximum absorption/re-emission capacity

#

once you blast the pixel element and it activates, there's nothing else you can do to make it brighter

sly elk
#

hehe

umbral moss
#

plasma was dimmer than LCD for the same reason

sly elk
#

the first time I used a plasma I was err surprised

#

felt more like a crt

umbral moss
#

plasma is basically the same concept as OLED

dreamy chasm
#

I have lcd monitors, they work, I'm happy

umbral moss
#

each pixel is a tiny mercury vapor lamp and the UV emission activates a wavelength-specific phosphor

dreamy chasm
#

Man, I know someone with a plasma that had to replace it after a few months

umbral moss
#

that's why plasma displays are mad heavy and super fragile

#

and also never made the jump to 4k, making so many tiny ass lamps in a 43" diagonal would be miserable

dreamy chasm
#

Needing to babysit it to prevent burn in makes it terrible in my eyes

umbral moss
#

any display that's self-illuminating will have burn-in

#

the fluorescent component will degrade when it's consistently activated

#

CRT, plasma, OLED all have it

#

CRT manufacturers just got very good at shuffling pixels to avoid wear on the phosphors

dreamy chasm
#

Aye

#

I'm sticking to lcds

#

Low maintenance that works well enough is what I tend to go for

umbral moss
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

we'll see how effective the new QD-OLED designs are

#

they're brighter and better tuned for the three fundamental wavelengths of the rec.2020 chart

umbral moss
#

I mean, that's because those cabinets are from 1995 lmao

#

when was the last time they had a new CRT cabinet

sly elk
#

it is sad when people buy crt cabinets and take the crt out

dreamy chasm
#

We had some old games in our local arcade, crts were fine but controls broke way before then i think

umbral moss
#

yeah, I broke an arcade cabinet slapping the buttons too hard 😔

dreamy chasm
#

Would be a simple fix if they all used easily serviceable stuff but, I'm pretty sure one of the shooter cabinets had one of the guns broken in half

sly elk
#

LOL

dreamy chasm
#

I don't think gorilla glue and duct tape is doing shit

sly elk
#

the buttons are probably fixable

dreamy chasm
#

For sure

sly elk
#

I dunno anything about the arcade guns

dreamy chasm
#

Yeah

sly elk
#

arcade cabinets tend to be modded and retrofit

dreamy chasm
#

You can jerry rig nonstandard buttons a lot of the time

#

Idk much about sticks though

sly elk
#

yea but after long enough they probably just replace the panel and all the hardware lol

dreamy chasm
#

Yeah

sly elk
#

lots of 20 year old machines are probably half new parts XD

#

or half replaced

#

and people do weird things

#

like turn a neo geo cabinet into something drastically different

dreamy chasm
#

Our racing cabinets still haven't been fixed

#

So you know who hasn't been here yet if they use the seats with the broken steering wheels

dull garnet
#

arcade buttons are like $3

sly elk

racing cabinets are kinda disappointing after driving real cars xD

but still kinda fun

dreamy chasm

Is it bc it looks cool

umbral moss

dreamy chasm

#

There's a pretty big market for short throws these days

#

Mostly just gamers

#

I mainly just want linears that don't feel like ass

sly elk
#

-shrug-

#

who am I to talk. i have an expensive keyboard. but split mechanicals can get expensive xD

#

my hot take

dreamy chasm
#

Oh, I used to have a custom one in the works

#

Like, actual custom

sly elk
#

is that the major brand office chairs are a rip off

dreamy chasm
#

Spent a month designing a pcb and I 3d printed the chassis

sly elk
#

like people keep talking shit about spending $400 on a gaming chair or whatever

#

but paying $1800 for a logitech herman miller is absolutely insane

dreamy chasm
#

How much are the non logi ones

sly elk
#

same price, maybe a few bucks less if you buy direct from HM. But they can be bought for less

#

afaik you still can't get discounts on the logitech version

dreamy chasm
#

Expensive chairs with good features are the one thing I'd splurge on if I could

sly elk
#

smnart furniture for example has them for 1483

dreamy chasm
#

I'd rather pay up front than have to deal with expensive back issues

sly elk
#

which is about what I paid for mine with tax when they were 15% off

#

but even that was too much

dreamy chasm
#

Shrug

#

My only issue with gaming chairs is that they're shit for your back

sly elk
#

if you haggle with the right dealer they can go for like $1000-1200

dreamy chasm
#

Yeah

sly elk
#

ierno, some are. some aren't.

dreamy chasm
#

I'd pay that much if I had the ability to

#

My backs important to me

sly elk
#

the $100 generic chinese ones are. the $500 ones tend to have some semblence of back support

dreamy chasm
#

I've seen 500 dollar ones with a neck pillow for a lumbar support feature

#

Actual scams lol

sly elk
#

still, an ok chair and a sit/stand desk is probably a better use of money

#

and better exercise discipline for better posture discipline

#

of course, you can still get the $1800 chair and do all that

dreamy chasm
#

It's moreso just for comfort

#

Longterm

#

I'd also buy a sit and stand table if I could

#

It's off the table after I've just spent for a rig a few months prior though

sly elk
#

yea there's a point where people just really splurge

dreamy chasm
#

Sorry, shit pun

sly elk
#

i mean $1800 chairs are nothing in the face of ergotron monitor arms, a $1000 standing desk, a $300 standing desk balance board hahaha
