my gfs pc: tl;dr: pc would not show a signal via GPU after cold boot until restarted several times. last week it refused entirely.
thought its the board, because other GPUs didnt work, but after swapping still nothing. after swapping everything except cpu, we decided it must be the CPU thats dying.
upgraded to AM5 and no success, still black.
got a 4th mainboard (not including mine) to try and it detected my GPU, displayed signal just fine, just not with her 6700xt. Now the mobo also shows the VRAM LED, which the others didnt.
i suspect either the PSU or the GPU must have killed the PCIe slots on the other boards, because even my GPU didnt work there anymore, or we got super unlucky and 3 boards all had dead slots.
since the newest mobo works, i bought a new GPU and she will get my 6900xt

yeah the card is quite cool which is neat. my previous one hit up to 100°C on hotspot, which i still think is quite alright for being a reference model.
and ye its an xfx 9070xt mercury. ironically the non-oc version but i am currently running it at 100mhz above the OC versions clockrates.
they both have similar TDP in theory but the 6900xt was often running at more than that plus ofc the crazy high spikes all the time

That's not surprising at all though, steam, discord, and your browsers are all GPU accelerated these days, so that's borderline expected. Pretty much every gpu-accel app on my linux desktop munches 300-400Mb of vram.

Thermal pads are less commonly used for CPUs but can be. They generally are worse at dissipating heat but are easier and have no mess involved. Thermal paste is generally better but thermal pads also don't have to be replaced for longer periods as well
