It has a different kind of computing power

hazy frost
#

My car has about 0 computing power

cerulean talon
#

Your phone would be awful at running your car

dire viper
#

I think it has less computing than a calculator

dire viper
#

Depends on what ur doing

cerulean talon
#

Cars need realtime systems for anything remotely modern

#

Phones are absolutely not realtime systems

dire viper
#

1980 forward for electronically controlled powertrain management

#

So an arduino works

cerulean talon
#

Arduinos have too much jitter for my taste, flash me a rtos and do it right

#

I’m also talking about proper ecu replacement, not canbus commands

dire viper
#

It’s funny cause I know someone with a 2500hp drag Audi that uses a speeduino for its entire management

dire viper
#

Only issue is carbs fucking suck!

#

There are other systems tho

#

The injection system on the Mercedes 300SL in the 50’s was just a continuous injection system

#

CIS is better than carbs but same shit of no real control

#

Here in Utah you’d drive up a canyon and pull over to a shop and have them tune up your carbs because of the altitude difference

#

Back when that was still a concern

#

But yuh

#

CANBUS supremacy or something

#

You have BMW to thank for that

#

Bosch designed it and BMW spent engineering money implementing it and adjusting it for Bosch

#

Which Bosch loves to do lol

#

Their MFI, Jetronic, was a redesigned version of a Bendix MFI they purchased, but they needed help getting it into mass market so they went to Porsche and had them refine it for Mercedes who used it from the 70’s to 93

#

Last cars with it were the W124 S Class and R129 SL

sly elk
#

hmmm

#

sitting here thinking what is the newest old car?

#

the chevy express van

#

nissan frontier was until recently? same with nissan Zs

#

wow bendix had their hands in a fair bit of stuff lol

#

i first heard that name a few days ago watching a video of someone playing christmas music from a bendix g-15 computer

hazy frost
#

Lmao

#

There’s a few cars that are basically identical to something from a long ass time ago but gets released as smth new anyway

sly elk
#

there's also stuff that's new-ish but still not new new?

#

the charger was kinda there, those engines didn't use direct injection and the internet connected stuff only goes as far as the radio, which is easily swapped out for something else

#

(or you take the cellular modem out of the radio and it becomes stupid)

#

(I've been wanting to do that to the radio in my jeep lol)

dire viper
#

I mean modified chassis shouldn’t count

#

Cause then the 911 would be king

#

Air cooled and water cooled

sly elk
#

nah i meant like

dire viper
#

The 69 to 88 911 is the same body

sly elk
#

as in not being an internet connected appliance that receives OTA updates and can't be serviced very much without a dealer and the computer that has the $$$ subscription

dire viper
#

Oh lol

sly elk
#

which pretty much everything now is

#

but there were some stragglers

dire viper
#

Commercial trucks lol

sly elk
#

and some cars are dumber than others

#

but even there sometimes it gets obnoxious

dire viper
#

Fundamentally chassis have remained the same for 40 years

sly elk
#

like having codes that can ONLY be cleared with a computer running the dealership software

dire viper
#

But the nice thing about a Peterbilt or Freightliner or Mac is that you can just swap in a new Alison transmission and CAT engine and bam

#

Brand new truck lmao

sly elk
#

^ that is nice

dire viper
#

And it’s not even “swapping”

#

It’s all factory supported

sly elk
#

though I can't remember if those "count" in ca emissions or not

#

I,... think they do?

#

i have heard enough complaints about CA making it difficult to certify engine swaps in cars :\

dire viper
#

In the case of commercial trucks, because the engine and transmissions are service items that will be replaced, I think the “service” replacements are the ones subject to emissions

sly elk
#

which feels stupid because if you take a 2005 and stick a 2010 powertrain in it they shouldn't even bother to ask

dire viper
#

So the new engines are complaint or whatever

sly elk
#

makes sense

dire viper
#

I got to see a blown up Alison trans

sly elk
#

when was the last time you heard a screaming jimmy?

dire viper
#

Recently

#

Two stroke Detroit’s are still used

#

Usually in off road

#

Cause off road is different

#

They make immediate power so they’re good for heavy loads on short trucks

#

Oh also some of the twin charged Detroit’s are just incredibly powerful

sly elk

sitting here looking at keyboards i could use for my peanuts keycap setup

dusty viper
#

Should i upgrade my GPU (RX 580)? Im struggling to hold 60fps in FFXIV and it's making me enjoy the game less

#

I get like 45fps on average

real edge
#

and are you US/EU or what

dusty viper
#

GPU: RX 580 CPU: I5 12400F, RAM: 16GB DDR4, 500GB SSD, monitor: 1440p 60hz Dell P2720D, 650W PSU. EU (Estonia)

real edge
#

baltic rynepat

#

but ye

#

you want to upgrade that GPU in your case

dusty viper
#

I was thinking about buying RX 7800 XT

real edge
#

and maybe get a 1440p 144hz or better display to go with it

#

if u have the spare money

#

night and day difference

dusty viper
#

I have only 1500 euros in savings and im in college

golden stream
#

Oh

#

Secondhand market then?

dusty viper
#

I have no expenses though

real edge
#

hm

#

what to recommend

dusty viper
#

If i buy an RX 7800 XT, i would have around 950 euros in savings, with 100 euros per month as allowance

real edge
#

EU market is a bit scuffed at the moment

dusty viper
#

Could be enough money for 2 years of college since i have everything covered

real edge
#

ok so

#

do you play games besides ffxiv

#

and do you find your ssd space enough to fit in said games

dusty viper
#

SSD space isn't an important factor since i have really fast ethernet speed

real edge
#

huh?

#

both are for different things

#

SSDs help make your games load faster and run better in the case of modern titles

dusty viper
#

Oh you mean like games with really huge storage spaces?

real edge
#

dont tell me u play games on an HDD or I might cry

dusty viper
#

I already specified i use a 500GB SSD

real edge
#

500gigs is enough for whatever games u play?

dusty viper
#

Yeah

real edge
#
  • windows?
#

huh

dusty viper
#

FFXIV is the only game i have installed that takes up huge storage space

real edge
#

I see

dusty viper
#

Occasionally i play hoyoverse games but mostly leave them uninstalled

real edge
#

as for GPU recommendations

#

for ffxiv and lower-demand games

#

since u do not play anything fancy

#

id mostly recommend a 4070super

#

which is about

#

500-600euro

#

600

golden stream
#

Brand new, and if there's any in stock right?

real edge
#

yeah

#

check stock and price

golden stream
#

Da heck, sounds cheaper than in my place

real edge
#

its available in my eu country for 600euro

#

so id assume its similar there

#

unless the baltic countries have worse stock than my country

#

the CPU is enough-ish to run the 4070super at almost full power

#

and ull get dlss and that jazz

#

lmk

#

what the price is

#

over there

dusty viper
real edge
#

ok thats not bad

#

620

#

its a good gpu that will last you for a good while

#

easily

#

id also get a new monitor but

#

thats if u care about having more than 60hz

#

in my opinion

#

144hz + is night a day difference from 60hz

#

but thats personal opinion

dusty viper
#

I fear that if i get an 144hz monitor i will be upgrading even more often and it's gonna ruin my wallet

real edge
#

hm?

#

thats not gonna happen I think

#

why would you think that?

dusty viper
#

I mean if i wanted 144fps on modern games, then i would have to upgrade my pc more often to keep having 144fps no?

real edge
#

but u dont play demanding modern games

dusty viper
#

FFXIV is kinda demanding though

real edge
#

and even I with a 4080super dont care enough to keep upgrading my pc to keep up with my monitors refresh rate

#

I had a 1070 for the longest time

#

and I only upgraded because

#

games were dropping below 60fps

#

regularly and it was jarring and distracting

#

but having that high refresh rate when I was able to take advantage of it

#

was a godsent and made games feel that much better

real edge
#

I wouldn't call ff14 demanding

#

black myth wukong is demanding

#

etc

dusty viper
#

Atleast if i buy a new gpu i wont have to upgrade for 5+ years

real edge
real edge
#

for sure

#

4070super is good

#

esp for your style of gaming and games

#

ull see your fps jump significantly

#

u wont have to upgrade

real edge
#

ohh ouch

#

wtf

#

huh

#

like with a new display u wont have to upgrade if u dont want to

#

it doesnt force you to do anything

#

on the games that u can take full advantage of the fps and hz its great

#

but in the games u cant then its ok

#

no harm done

dusty viper
#

Yeah, but i still have to think about my financial situation

real edge
#

I have a very powerful pc

#

and a 240hz display

#

I dont feel forced to upgrade to a 4090 just to get 240fps etc

real edge
#

I am looking at budget displays and hoping they are cheap over there lmao

#

what about this one

real edge
#

ohh thats good

#

the Gigabyte M27QA?

dusty viper
real edge
#

so 200euros for the base M27Q

#

and 300euro for the m27QA

#

254 for the dell

#

you have good budget options

#

if u wanna take the dip

#

personally my recommendation would go like this

#

M27QA -> M27Q -> DELL

#

the M27QA is the best of the three

#

but its the most expensive

#

M27Q is the cheapest but it has the weakest specs out of the three

#

put it second due to the cheap price

#

consider it if you want

#

just make sure to enable overdrive and set your refresh rate to the max if you get one

dusty viper
#

Thanks for the recommendations

#

Im still thinking whether it's an sensible financial choice or if im sabotaging my financial future with this gpu purchase

real edge
#

idk tbh

#

u have to check your expenses and income per month

dusty viper
real edge
#

such as?

#

hm

#

ok so

#

do you need anything

dusty viper
#

Investing or emergency fund

#

I dont actually need anything right now

real edge
#

while you are still young, your parents will take care of you and after college you will most likely have a job that gets you 800 or more per month

#

that doesnt mean go blow your money on hookers and shit lmao

#

still be careful

#

but if u feel like you absolutely need something cause its hampering your day to day life

#

dont be afraid to ask around for advice and see if you really need it

dusty viper
#

I mean, the game is playable

real edge
#

my gpu recommendation is more on the expensive side but its meant to last you the next 5-6 years

#

based on the type of games u play

#

esp at 60fps

#

the 4070super can do way more in ff14 and other games as well

tldr? User thought he had a gotcha moment with AMD and sent the CPU to GN, and they figured out the user was just dumb?

dusty viper
#

How often should i clean my pc if i have two cats?

odd sand
#

Depends on how good your case is at keeping dander and dust out. If you have a modern case where it's those pull out micromesh cover sleeves, just look to if/when they get clogged with stuff.

#

They generally do a very good job of keeping most stuff out. I only really clean the inside like once every year or two. The filters like every 6 months.

dusty viper
#

I was thinking about cleaning it every 3 months

But yeah, for the top and side it looks like you may just have to take the long thin vacuum attachment to the hose to clean them off.

sly elk

#

i usually drive with the music up too so

dire viper
#

the head going sounds like a 392 classic cause ppl will not wait for break in and warp the head

sly elk
#

tbh? it has 8900 miles?

#

idk

dire viper
#

oh true

#

break in would be 1500

#

but also a head going right away is odd

sly elk
#

hemis don't have break in periods

#

even if they should

#

it's not a corvette

dire viper
#

I mean they do

#

every engine does

#

the only exception is turbocharged engines really?

#

turbocharged engines are obviously designed for high compression and pressure

#

and the super stiff piston rings they use need to be boosted a few times to seat properly, or so I have been told

#

ig the nice thing in modern cars is throttle by wire and it can just not give you more throttle

#

so you simply wont exceed X rpm period before break in

sly elk
#

ENGINE BREAK-IN RECOMMENDATIONS —
3.6L & 5.7L
A long break-in period is not required for the drivetrain
(engine, transmission, clutch, and rear axle) in your new
vehicle.
Drive moderately during the first 300 miles (500 km).
After the initial 60 miles (100 km), speeds up to 50 or
55 mph (80 or 90 km/h) are desirable.
While cruising, brief full-throttle acceleration within the
limits of local traffic laws contributes to a good break-in.
However, wide-open throttle acceleration in low gear
can be detrimental and should be avoided.
The engine oil, transmission fluid, and axle lubricant
installed at the factory is high-quality and energy-
conserving. Oil, fluid, and lubricant changes should be
consistent with anticipated climate and conditions
under which vehicle operations will occur. For the rec-
ommended viscosity and quality grades page 249.

#

though

#

i feel like if you buy anything with a 392 the dealer will happily hoon the shit out of it before selling it to you

dire viper
#

meh

sly elk
#

also gotta make sure to chirp the tires on customer cars when they bring em in for service 😉

if you are able to wait 1-2 months, i would recommend waiting with the purchase, because nvidia is about to announce the new generation of cards which usually leads to pricedrops in current cards and more cards on the used market

crimson glacier

i'll have to wait a bit anyway. low on money right now and still awaiting shifts from new job.

lost python

the rest that you picked is good, but yeah i'd recommend waiting and revisiting then when you are ready to purchase. the market will have changed by then and there might be some better deals

crimson glacier
lost python
#

well, ironically the 3060 is faster DogKek
but not worth it anymore either. i would either look for a 7600xt or check the used market like ebay and whatever else you got in the UK for 6700xt/6750xt or 6800xt cards.
but keep in mind that the 5000 series may surprise us in performance or make other cards like the 4070 cheaper.

crimson glacier

i've seen the 7600xt come up in a lot of reddit threads so i may look into that

It depends what amd means by not focusing on high end

They’re either intending to not target 4090/5090 levels of performance or they’re focusing completely on ‘mid range’ which is going to be an xt or xtx equivalent

#

I’m not sure which one it actually is

sly elk

or just making $200-300 gpus?

#

amd kinda has a tick-tock cycle like that

as I recall, rx480/580 (cheap), then vega 56/64 (sorta power), then rx5xxx (cheap mostly), then rx6xxx (power)

#

but rx7xxx was also power sooo -shrug-

hazy frost
#

Who knows

#

I do think they messed up their more high end GPUs last gen bc the 7900xt had a horrible launch price and the xtx? Had issues with the reference card

And then the 7800xt and 7700xt especially had mediocre launch prices

And by the time the prices came down more and the GRE released imo the super GPUs were better value

There's likely to be some overhead for OEM's who are willing to ask for 2x12 pins, but that's going to be from the factory OC's, but that's alot of wattage to dissipate.

#

2x12's means you need a nominal 1200w supply /just/ for the GPU, nothing else.

also

#

who is the 5090 for

#

I ask this as someone who bought a 4090 and wonders what I need all that power for

cerulean talon
#

I'd consider it, mostly because the 5080 is a little light if I really ran my rig at full power.

inland mauve
#

CP77 with path tracing runs fine as long as I use DLSS

#

and that's pretty much the worst thing I can throw at it

cerulean talon
#

16gb of vram is a little low for running 3 4k's at high framerates.

#

I'd also prefer the 512 bit memory bus to get the vram speedup.

kind rune
#

black myth wukong with path tracing might be heavier

inland mauve
#

that is fair

#

if you're such a heavy user I could see it

cerulean talon
#

I'm one of those weird enthusiasts. xD

inland mauve
cerulean talon
#

But I also like my 4k120's running hard and fast.

kind rune

cerulean talon
#

Alot of issues with GPU's comes from not understanding how to use GPU hardware efficently. shrug

inland mauve
#

that news about the 5070 is good though, if it is really comparable to a 4090 then it's probably a good high end GPU

cerulean talon
#

It's alot better these days because we've moved away from the "oh, I can write my own engine".

#

The 5070 is likely a little low for 4k work compared to a 4090 just due to 12gb vram vs 24gb.

#

That being said, I'd be surprised if you noticed it unless you're doing multiple 4k's or really slamming it hard with games that understand how to use vram properly.

kind rune
#

that might not even matter if dlss 4 just generates 4 billion frames

cerulean talon
#

DLSS still uses vram.

inland mauve
kind rune
#

yea but they said the amount of vram it uses is lower now

inland mauve
#

it's a GPU I could recommend to friends who want something high end

cerulean talon
kind rune
#

theres 0 chance the 5070 is 4080 super level in rast

#

maybe a 5070 using dlss 4 vs a 4080 super using dlss 3

cerulean talon
#

Yeah, most people aren't going to notice though. If we keep relying on framegen, the upgraded tensor cores will cover up for the worst of it.

sly walrus
#

so we've got captain america, doctor strange, and now thor

inland mauve
#

frame gen is going to stay

cerulean talon
#

That being said, if people auctually properly pipeline and unroll their shaders, it's probally fine just due to the cuda core count.

#

The thing is a literal 6000 core processor if you know what you're doing.

inland mauve
#

that's not going away

#

not if it gives higher management more excuses to not grant their devs the time to optimize

kind rune
#

i need to know what the input latency on dlss 4 is

cerulean talon
#

Yeah, so 96 64-wide waves on the 5070

#

That's wild.

#

Functionally, yeah, it's probally closer to a 4080 than a 4080 super, it's a nice upgrade in general from a 4070 or really anything older except maybe a 3090ti.

kind rune
#

the 4080 and 4080 super are so close together though

cerulean talon
#

Just because the 3090xx cards ended up in a weird spot because of their vram allocation.

kind rune
#

theres like a 2-3% difference

cerulean talon
#

Cycle up on the cuda cores, classically, nvidia does amazing work optimizing them, clock rates on the 5070 OEM are nearly the speed of the 4080 OEM. The biggest thing limiting it will be the 192 bit memory bus.

#

That being said, gddr7 vs gddr6 may make up for more of that than expected just due to the absurd clockrates.

kind rune
#

how can ai drive a car it doesnt even have feet

sly walrus

presenting, kraftwerk

cerulean talon

I'm interested to see how big the dies are on the 5xxx series.

#

Then I can auctually work out how much they're fleecing. xD

sly walrus
cerulean talon
#

That doesn't look like an actual wafer.

sly walrus
#

he was showing off the guts of the card earlier

#

that might give you an idea

cerulean talon
#

Yeah, I'll have to see if I can find a decent picture.

#

If I had to guess, it's probally 5-10% larger in terms of die than a 4090 from a quick glance though, I'll have to see if I can find my old wafer calcs.

sly walrus
#

see, shit like this is what hte vision pro shoulda been for

#

not commercial entertainment

cerulean talon
#

Hard to beat out google in that space though.

#

Google glass became a serious product for exploring this, as did microsoft for awhile.

sly walrus

glossy ravine

The RTX 5090 legitimately being 2000 USD is hilarious

cerulean talon
#

I mean marvel is likely a huge consumer of Nvidia products.

#

Wtf wouldn't he like them? xD

glossy ravine
#

It has well passed the point of ridiculous with Nvidia going, "Haha Big Numher go brrrr"

cerulean talon
#

Talk to TSMC and get them to kill wafer prices.

#

Not that nvidia's not making a good markup, let me be very clear about that.

#

But it's not as absurd as it seems off clip.

sly walrus

can we get a petition to call the supercomputer SHODAN

cerulean talon

If it's not, someone should name one shodan.

Not on top500, so probally available.
