too much monitor
but the bottom sceren does look annoying to use
I have a pretty good ultrawide now
X_X I do ferquently have neck issues
i have a TV above my desk but its much higher up so my monitor is at a normal heigth
i don't do the tv thing beacuse my desk goes up and down XD
and I actually do use it in the up position especially when working
not much this weekend though :3
my TV is like
42" 1080p
looks amazing
i have to be a few metres away for it to not look horrible anyway
i mostly use my monitor or laptop anyway
we never use it
and yeep i have no reason to use it xD
in a way I think that making your desk too perfect is a fail
because thenyou never need/want to use anything else
like i have a laptop but i rarely use it because... why....
i have one just bc if im not home i like to be able to get stuff done
i r arely use it to play games or anything unless im like staying somewhere for a week or so and take it
i got big money. please anyone talk me out of upgrading my rig

What specs is your current rig?
Wait for 5090, build new rig, pass her your current build?
isnt that still over a year out?
If you hadn't mentioned hers, I'd have agreed with Nhad about it being plenty good enough
but also nah its not good enough for my requirements
I think it's maybe end of this year but not certain
What are 4090 prices like in Germany nowadays
4080 super?
but my main issue is really that my CPU is struggling in games compared to like a 5700x3d
and my 6900xt is strulling with anything that isnt gaming
4080 super starts at 1040€ here
Could go like 7800x3d and 4080 super
Anything less might not be a satisfying upgrade
maybe. part of me is thinking if i should just get a 5700x3d and give her my 5800x, because i already got an old board + ram and a 6700xt for her.
but another part of me is like "but you could go with a newer gen platform and give her your entire old rig"
Is a 5700x3d really that much better than 5800x ?
in games? yeah. everything else? not really
If it is, you might stretch the life of that rig to 5090 territory
5800x and 6700xt would be huge gains for your gf too
if they really come this year and arent plagued by the usual early-adopter issues like catching fire and stuff
That'd be a crazy noticeable upgrade for her
ye for sure
that being said, i am still surprised that this 10-12 year old PC still holds up so well
Apparently the latest rumours say q4 2024 for 5090
hmhm
But we don't trust rumours too much of course
rob your rig is good enough
It is, expect his gf's sucks and he has money
i have a 240hz monitor and i am gonna use the 240hz
Rob is in Germany
yeah
but we got mindfactory who often have banger deals. just not this week unfortunately
but so many of the people ask for advice live there so I just default to it mentally
We all suffer from no microcenter
I know someone who made a 4 hour drive just to get some parts
oh
today they got a 7800x3d for 319€
Probably worth the day trip
yeah
You could buy board/CPU/ram now, upgrade GPU when 5090 drops
I waited for a very long time to upgrade my 1070 lol
in a year from now, there will be refreshes releasing soon
probably yeah
honestly i think most of my money would probably go to SSDs because i finally want to have enough space
It sounds like 5090 is worth waiting for
rob getting their SO a better rig with some of the old parts is also something motivating them rn, nhadala
the concern for me with that plan is
the 7800x3d cannot even max out a 4090
no chance it maxes out a 5090
on some more cpu bound titles
well, given that i dont plan to play at 1080p and i certainly dont plan to play with DLSS/framegen, i think that wont be too much of an issue
you get a 5090 so you can say fuck you and hit the ultra preset on gpu bound stuff
some bottlenecking with cpu bound stuff is expected, idk
Girlfriend would end up with 5800x and 6700xt and get the 6900 later, that's pretty sweet for her
feels like CPUs are falling behind GPUs in terms of progression
i think the 4090 was just a unicorn like the 1080ti was
the 7800x3d's an insane cpu right now, the chances of it being too obsolete to reasonably run a top of the line card in a year's probably next to slim
lol
for me personally, waiting was worth it
well you really waited for a long long time and your requirements are pretty different from mine. like, you were completely fine with running games at low-med settings with good FPS, but i want stuff maxed out, without having to rely on upscaling, and still hit 100+ fps
and since my 6900xt sucks for pretty much everything that isnt gaming, it has to go either way
giving your partner a rig that isn't about to collapse on itself's probably a pretty good motivator to upgrade at least the cpu either way
there are rumors of a new AMD gen soon
well CPU gen is coming that much is clear. GPU gen is just supposed to be a refresh from the current gen, that fixes a lot of its issues
but i guess it will primarily depend on how much longer she wants to hold out for this.
or maybe i get lucky and find a good deal on a 5700x3d or similar
recently someone sold a 5800x3d in the forum i am in, for 190€
that maxes out anything until the 4090
I did get a 5700x3d on sale recently
everything running significantly smoother was a welcome surprise
my thoughts would be to get a 5700x3d and sell the 6900xt to get a 4070super where they both cost the same(ish), use that until new amd and nvidia stuff comes out, shell out tons of money to get the best of then and give the 5700x3d and 4070super grid to the GF
at least that is what my cost saving self and the current tech situation tells me
that way you give gf new cpu with the 6700xt and then something amazing in a few months
and you get away from AMD GPU
I doubt rob's getting 4070 super money with that
close. 6900xt goes for like 400-500€ here depending on the model
used?
4070 super is out of the question either way though because of the limited vram
are you looking at sold listings
ye
it will only be for a few months anyway from the looks of it
the 4070ti super is too expensive to be used as a temporary replacement I think
its like 800euro
ye I am only suggesting it cause he said he wants to get away from amd
ah, right
I just think the current tech landscape is a bit too sketch to splurge 2000+ on new pc
but there are temporary ways to achieve the goal of getting away from AMD and giving GF new pc parts
until the market becomes unsketched and new stuff comes out
that is my opinion anyway
Depends on how important the non-gaming stuff is
personally I am happy with my 5800x3d(upgraded from 2700x) and 4080super (upgraded from 1070)
Short of 4K it is
Ur not actually going to use 12GB at 1440p
The only time I’ve managed to allocate not even use 11.8 was with path tracing in specific areas in cyberpunk
Also AMD vs Nvidia vram usage is actually different bc of how they do compression
Can be different by anywhere from like 0.5gb to 3/4GB depending on what res and game
People are way too worried about vram when I’m terms of gaming the reality is ur card will probably stop performing well before u run into memory limitations
If ur using it for something where u actually need the memory the likelihood is u need more than 12 or 16 and have to go for a used 3090 or something
people have been spouting this nonsense about vram for ages and at this point it really just sounds like a massive cope from nvidia fans. Every year the "x GB are more than enough" increases by 1-2 gb.
there are more and more games hitting well over 10gb vram even at 1440p, especially if you dont use DLSS & co and i am surely not gonna go with "just enough" just because the list of games that want more than that is rather small right now.
so you're saying i should get something better than my 3070
if you need it, yes ofc
My 3070ti is still doing okay for anything that isn't horribly optimised at 1440p
Tlou was horrid though
for computex yeah (and a new chipset X850)
skipping 750 because number reasons
performance boost will only be about 10%
memory controller will get the most gain (6400 mhz will be the new normal finally)
my rx 5700xt is chugging along at a cool 100c
and can play most games at 1440p 😌
got the old original blower fan version though
nowadays you'd go for the latest gen and get those dual fan setups
Lol it’s not just enough and as I said compression is different so going AMD isn’t actually 4GB more for a 16gb card in practice it can be more like 2gb more
It’s not coping it’s a fact
12GB is also not ‘just enough’ anyway current gen consoles are still around for a while which effectively run on the same amount and games are designed for them first
sure thats why the 3080 struggled so hard when hitting the vram limit compared to the 6700xt or 6800xt, because of different compression
If ur worried about not enough then it’s likely that 12 and 16 both won’t be enough by the time it increases
Trying to futureproof ur purchases is a sure fire way to make u lose now and in the future tbh
Bc it’s not possible
Better go get a 14900k
Both my 14900ks and my 14700k have bad cores, it's great. xD
I'm probally gonna wait for the 4xx4 epycs to come out though and just build a new rig around one of em.
If anything would get the 13900k tbh
And just spend the rest on a loop and OC
Atl then u can get something out of it
9800x3d will go crazy
By the time the 4004's are out, it'll be time to rebuild this PC anyway.
I’ve been thinking I’d get a 7900x or something just for the extra cores and they’re not too expensive
But it depends on whether I buy a MacBook to use a DAW instead
As Logic Pro x is just the best one
I still can't use a mac as a DD, the keyboard mappings are annoying af.
The only daw I like is MacOS only
And I’d like to be able to take it places anyway
To record with friends
Not surprising, Apple's done a decent job of building a good suite of tools for creatives.
Yeah
GarageBand is amazing for being free
Miles above anything free on windows
Logic Pro X is imo just the best daw in general but it’s like $250
I'd seriously consider using a mac more if they just stopped being incredibly dumb and gave me a windows/linux-like key profile.
I’m not too bothered by the keys
I hate the old Mac mouse tho
I had to use one for a while
I'm a completely memory/touch typist, so sending back and forth between my mac for work, and my linux/windows desktops causes me issues. xD
That’s fair
Even with some of the janky rebinding I've done, I still cause all sorts of issues in iterm/etc.
I use like my full size keyboard for desktop and my laptop keyboard which is slightly off every day and then I used to have an ANSI keyboard too
So it was always slightly different and I’d make typos
But I end up getting used to it after a few months if I use them all enough
I use the same physical keyboard for all my machines, so it turns out to be extra frustrating.
I cba to take a 100% keyboard with my laptop lmao
If I had a 60% I’d be inclined to
But i need atl 75% to be comfortable anyway
I run an 80 at home, and carry a 60 if I'm out of the house.
My laptop keyboard isn’t all that bad besides the slightly hollow feeling in one spot
Which is to be expected
But Lenovo keyboards are generally always ok tbf
I’ve never hated one
Yeh, my current laptop is a framework, so it's decent-ish-enough.
I can't stand the keyboard in the mbp for work though, so any travel with that thing always has an external in my bag if I expect to do anything more than 5-10 minutes on it.
Lol
Idm that one actually
I like the Apple keyboards in general
But it also means I can have long nails and use them easily so I am biased
There’s not too many good low profile keyboards anyway
I've got super heavy finger-falls, so they feel bad in general.
And the mechanical ones cost a lot more than I wanna pay
They're super fine if you're a light typist, I absolutely am not one of them.
When I have nails like I can’t rly use normal ones
Bc in the way
Otherwise I wouldn’t like them
That thankfully, for me is not a problem. xD
Lol
It’s normally not for me bc I like being able to play instruments but sometimes I will
It also costs too much now lmao
Understandable. I like to keep mine super short because I'm less likely to crack one doing something silly my nails aren't meant to handle.
Yeah
Well I don’t have my natural ones super long usually
I’ll get them done but recently I’ve considered press ons instead bc I hate being committed to them for so long
When I wanna go back to doing other stuff
Conflicting
Yeh, I could see that being annoying.
So like they’re nicer but if I wanna play instruments or had to work on the car or whatever they’re like in the way suddenly
Makes sense why that'd be annoying.
Are SSDs getting more expensive again
Depends on the vendor, samsung's up a bit at the moment.
Samsungs always up despite being mediocre
They were fine in the high end SSD/NVMe consumer-grade for awhile, but they've taken a pretty good plummet.
They just have nothing exceptional now
Not in the consumer lines, no.
While other companies have the same stuff cheaper
Everyone caught up to them.
Doesn’t WD have better enterprise stuff
Phison was a big part of that afaik, as they've made some bangin controller for current gen.
Intel makes the top-tier enterprise gear, samsung isn't far behind as they route most of their nicer chips there. I'm talking SAS+ here btw.
I see
I don’t have anything to do with that stuff rly bc I don’t need to
So I’m never caught up with it
If yuou want a SSD that can auctually handle real write loads, you get an intel-dc drive.
What speeds are those now
DC SSD's are built for iops for random-read, not for large linear reads fo their xfer/second is slow-ish.
The ones kupo lives on now are 2.6Gbyte/second but 450k rr iops and 50k write iops: , and this was an old pcie 3.0: https://www.disctech.com/Intel-SSDPE2ME016T401-1600GB-PCIe-SSD
Linear speeds are fine on consumer stuff
Yeah.
No, the difference is the data access patterns ofc.
Also, PCIe5 has semi-limited deployment in DC's still
So most of the gear you find is 3/4 still.
I mean if u had to choose between enterprise stuff and PCIe 5 when they’re the same price PCIe 5 sucks in general
Idk who’s buying it
Has virtually no use that I know of
PCIe5 is weird atm, because most consumer-grade boards don't offer enough lanes off the processor to run both a x4 NVMe and your 16x at full lane counts.
Yeah
So they tend to cut down the 16x to an 8x and then use the 8 lanes to run your 4x nvme.
I toyed with it for awhile, there's some use cases I have that benefit nicely from it, particulalry dealing with small files when I'm developing on my desktop.
Tbf I also have an asus board so it sucks and just costs too much
I ofc didn’t pay 450
How would u benefit over the fastest gen 4 drives rn
My current kupo-related project could use more iops, but that's nothing new.
I tend to work on projects that write extremely large numbers of small files as debugging/etc. The improvement is marginal in general, and I mostly got my gen5 as a play-drive, as serious gets pushed to one of my epycs.
I don't think it's that bad here.
So that difference is like insane per $
I got the P5P for £105 and at the time I checked gen 5 was like 300
Yeah, a t700 is only ~20-30$ more at the moment.
It’s probably better now actually
I was kinda hoping that we'd auctually use directstorage, as that's what I really wanted to play with, but gamedeveloperslol.
I kind of want to just buy some old hard drives for my media storage but I’m pretty sure I’d get annoyed by the noise again
Direct storage is the future
Not for me personally, but for gaming, yeah.
The ability to stream from a fast disk into a chunk of vram will be super nice.
Just need consumer hardware to catch up
To be affordable
But I think that isn’t far off really
Depends on where you live ig. From my understanding, storage is much more expensive in the EU than the US every time I hear about it.
Yeah I live in the UK
Which is pretty much same as rest of Europe
Prices aren’t amazing on anything
Especially compared to the US
Yeh, I just snagged a SN770 2Tb for 140 USD, Sabrent R4P 1Tb for 120 and a R4P 2Tb for 220
But the US is as good as it gets for hardware deals
Sounds like it's much more absurd over there. xD
I got my P5P 2TB for £105 and I have like a wd blue or smth I bought ages ago for £100
But there were a lot of deals when I buy stuff
It’s around £150 for soemthing like that rn
Hard-drives are my current pain in the rear, but that's kinda how it be right now.
I just have a thing about noise
I try and make everything silent so hard drives are like
A pain
I’d have to have them in another room lmao
Yeah, that's not an option in my house. xD
My computing area is loud, but the new drives will be going into a machine in my loft, because /that's/ too loud even for me down here.
My biggest wish is for an AIO with an actually quiet pump
So I can get better than my air cooler and quieter
The eiswolf's are pretty quiet ime.
I was thinking about just getting like an LT720
But I heard mixed opinions about pump noise
The performance per £ was good tho
Understandable. The eiswolf was my roomie's choice because of how often we change hardware. xD
My PA120SE is alright but the fans aren’t even that quiet
I might buy some nf a12s or t30s
No stock fans are tbh.
I prefer having RGB fans bc I can choose to have it on or off depending on what I feel like doing
Which conflicts with my hatred for noise
Said roomie opted to get the A14's and slapped 6 of them on each rad xD
I was considering getting those phanteks halo things
Those things are insane.
And the t30s
Tbh, just get some silent fans and wrap em in LED tape.
It'll connect fine to your board headers.
I have the EK RGB ones for intake
Waiting to get the p12 max FDB for exhaust
Not sold yet
you don't even have to do that
you can pop those on some hideous ass noctua fans
They look expensive af.
but I'm extremely cynical about noctua
I'll stick to "if I want LED's, I'll jam in some random LED tape I've got around the house" xD
I think it's all hogwash to get you to spend a ton of money for a marginal improvement
I kinda like their high power fans tbh.
£10
Yeah, I'd consider that expensive for what they are.
Only have like 2 good fans
And the fact they’re slim fans are what makes them popular
Good for SFF too
T30s are on the other end being the best of the best but 30mm thick
i felt like the packaging with all the adapters was kinda wasteful
Most of my gear doesn't get fans, but I don't mind running most of it warm.
lol
i used these in my sim rig and I was quite pleased for the price hahaha
And the servers get whatever random fans fit.
xD
Those are what I got on the PA120SE and they’re horrible
like are noctuas better? absolutely!
I hate them
hmm?
They’re good if u don’t care about noise that much
But they for sure aren’t quiet
But they’re cheap so u get what u pay for
I'd also guess it depends on your ambient noise level.
I think best value fans now are the new p12 max
The new FDB solves their prior issues with weird noises
And they always performed well
i mean sure
My livingroom/computing area is loud enough normally that most fans that aren't /loud/ are borderline silent in the noise floor.
I only stay away from the DBB ones bc of bearing noise
at least those p12 max are still cheap
The a14's are really the only problematic fans. 😄
Blaaaah, I need to get unlazy and start this parser.
There’s t30s and gentle typhoons but u can’t even get the latter half the time
The only overpriced gamer fans I’ll accept are the lian li AL120 bc they’re actually GOOD
The Corsair ones are more expensive and suck
from icehunter's posts about them I'd never ever buy them
ever
My next house is likely going to end up with a giga custom water-cooling system, I can't even call it a loop with what I'm planning.
I’ll do a loop when I can afford a xx90 card
Not buying a block for like a 4070ti or whatever I upgrade to soon
my favorite fans are still corsair MLs lol
My rough designs also have to service my server farm.
Which is why it's hard to call it a loop. xD
Lol
at least the regular ones aren't that expensive
They’re still terrible
ehh
Loud and perform badly
really?
I mean u can not believe me but they suck
so the thermalright are the worst things you've ever used
but still better than corsair MLs
They’re old and weren’t the best even back then
oh yea theyer' ancient
Yes bc I don’t use the MLs bc they’re even worse
they'er just sunons with LEDsl ol
The Thermalright ones are the worst ones I’ve actually used bc it came with my cooler
I’ve had them but not used them
Bc I wouldn’t want to
I mean I don’t want to use my Thermalright ones but I have no spare fans
those p12 max are $10 a piece
And have solved this by having them run at 500rpm permanently
what excuse do you have for not using them if you think they'er the best
The DBB or FDB ones
lol
The FDB ones aren’t sold here
Uhh sure
Just don’t have the fluid leak out lol
It means there’s less bearing noise especially on cheaper fans
P12 max is best value anyway not best fan
What i actually own for 140mms is EK loop FPT fans
And for my cooler I’m probably getting t30s/p28s/NF A12s
I want to hear more about what you think are the best fans for case fans 🙂
Also is that a minty pt cruiser I see 😮
Best value is probably the new p12 max or the old ones if they can like have good QC or u get lucky and have no bearing noise
Best in general for anything is always gonna be like t30s
Best on a rad and as case fans
Atl for consumer stuff
But t30s were developed with sunon so that’s why they’re way better than other ‘gamer’ consumer companies’ fans
hmmm
but sunon made maglev fans
that is... it doesn't even say what it is lol
nvm i'm an idiot that can't read
magnetic levitated DUAL VAPO bearing
Sunon is a big name for industry stuff
It’s like noctua is actually only super well known bc they do the same thing
Their consumer marketed stuff is actually mostly terrible
Sunon is the reason the T30 is good
Somehow lian li also made the p28 which is also as good but more expensive and apparently had weird bearing noises too
There’s also stuff like the gentle typhoon and it’s various Chinese clones that are the same thing
But finding those at the price they’re worth is actually a pain so I cba to buy them
or just use Arctic fans because they're decent and cheap
Arctic user here, they're good
@deep sapphire
what a great memory
Milwaukee is so based
I watched a guy change tires on dump trunks all day using one of the super large pneumatic impacts they make and that thing ran like clockwork
LMAO
i'm sad it's not real
in an alternate universe there's a slightly more ridiculous version of scotty that really does this shit
That was the first thing I said for value options
But the DBB ones have had bad QC and bearing noise as an issue that’s too common imo
Hence why I will always shill the new FDB ones
For the max fans anyway
The regular ones are ok now but they’re not great in performance either the tl-c12c is probably better than those
lol
It’s about having noise levels and performance tho
U can easily have a basically silent fan but it won’t be great at actually moving air usually
The cooler master ones are also good for RGB fans
i like hwo they use the color critical shield ... and a screen bar light lmao
I bought a pack of arctics because I'm a cheap bitch
They work well enough
Only really become a problem when I try to record audio
But turning off my case fans and keeping my cpu fan on the lowest rpm solves that problem
fancontrol my beloved..
That’s my solution currently to noise but I would also like to cool my cpu properly without it being loud
So I’ll probably replace the Thermalright ones
do any of y'all have experience with streaming to both Twitch and Youtube at the same time?
I did a little bit at one point, ran a small stream splitter on a box I had outside the house w/ an auctually fast connection so I didn't saturate my upload at the time.
@deep sapphire what brand of creepers/shop stools do you stick with
My new job is post trip inspections on garbage trucks and I’m buying a harbor freight creeper for now but I’ll probably need something actually nice for long term
I get two weeks of training and then I get transferred down south and will be running a whole yard by myself lol
Whatever is on sale lmao
@dense temple that reminds me, so I know how intel CPU naming scheme works but how does AMD do it ?
4 numbers, 1 is gen, 2 is CPU tier (3, 5, 7, 8, 9), last two I can't recall off the top of my head
and the number before that works the same way as the iX in intel right ?
basically give or take
did ya watch the project farm video on those
iirc the daytona did well
14 Creepers: Snap On, Daytona, Pittsburgh, Big Red, Pro-Lift, DNA Motoring, Performance Tools, JEGS, Vevor, KTool, Traxion and Omega. Creepers compared for comfort, ergonomics, clearance, rolling resistance from several directions on concrete and on a rubber mat.
I purchased all of the creepers to ensure an unbiased review. So, thank you for s...
3rd number is architecture so zen 1-5 or whatever and the 4th is either a 5 or a 0, 5 being better performance
In theory you could have a 8915x for example based on their naming scheme and it will be worse than a newer one because it’s using zen 1 in this case
AMD's mobile sku naming is so bad
intel's is a little better than amd's in a way
but not by much lol
I hate the way they both do chipsets
and then the whole xeon silver/gold thing
AMD's is fine in general, intel rolled back around on their numbering though didn't they?
LOL
Epyc's are hilariously bad
Xeons aren't much better than epycs though, given how many weird branches they've got.
mhmm
also i heard amd is doing new chipsets for next gen desktop ryzen
not sure if that means x670 won't work but
I just want the 4xx4 epycs.
I'm midlly curious if they'll have /any/ difference from their desktop 7xxx series counterparts.
Or if the lines are just converging
new chipsets should be wifi7/usb4 focused. I don't know any details 😐
new chipset is normal
they do one for each generation usually
it's not a new socket
old ones will work with bios update (AGESA ComboPI 1.1.7.0 or newer) edit: although 1.1.8.0 is out recently I don't know the change log. msi isn't telling in terms of new chip support.
I see
also darn I didnt even notice you rejoined bidori
i have been here i am just in the void most times lol
ahh
usb4 would only be nice if the motherboards support dp over usb4 (thunderbolt dp functionality)
in a way that I can push gpu output over it
what I REALLY want
is for the *(@%# GPUs to start coming with 4x usb4/thunderbolt 4 ports
it'd be pretty sweet to have a monitor with usbs and whatever else over 1 cable
plus imagine how much simpler wired vr headsets could be with 1 cable instead of that goofy harness
but I highly doubt any GAMING motherboard manufacturer is gonna give a shit
It short circuited and i didn't have electricity for a day but now it's working 😎
That creeper is actually comfy
LMAO
well at least its working now
lol at people trying to figure out the modern version of "FAANG" (facebook amazon apple netflix google)
I prefer HANNAHMONTANA: Huawei Amazon Nokia Netflix Alibaba HP Microsoft Oracle NVIDIA Tesla Apple Nubank Alphabet
Don't forget about FUGMYASS (Facebook, Uber, Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Amazon, Stripe, Salesforce)
MANGA is still my favourite atm (Meta/Apple/Netflix/Google/Amazon)
Netflix is probably easy work for the pay
eh not sure
for payment idk about paypal but platforms are updated w stripe payment processor recently
I feel like 80% of working at netflix would be related to either production, or network engineering (reducing bandwith used)
as far as I know they are still leaning towards VVC because of the ability to plug it into existing rights management cycle (real time encoding)
the state of that + AV1 is still kinda a shitshow user experience wise
eh I don't think AV1 would be widely popular until like 1-2 gens of hardware
Yeh, it's gotta age a bit to get good hardware impls.
IIRC the current-gen apple chips have HW AV1 decoders though, so it may not be super far off
not so super far off, but production hardware that is not-apple is p limited, like reserved only for 4090 + the whole intel GPUs
Intel GPU is p interesting but more of experimental end tho
I quite like the intel GPU for transcoding work, I'm using it fairly heavily for such atm, but yeah, it'll be nice to see it hit more mainstream hardware in general.
hot take: i actually looking forward intel GPU
prolly duo GPUs may be back, one for working one for rendering/transcoding
at least intel GPU is, and still, be cheaper than nvidia
I've got several of the intel GPU's, and I was happy with them, I wasn't trying to shove gaming down their throats, but generally they handled my 4k's fine, and running them on linux was fairly smooth
I'm pretty sure if I'd upgraded to 6.7, and let things be a bit more edge than my usual stable systems they would have been super nice as it unlocked quite a bit on my A380 I'm using in my NAS.
now that's surprising ngl
how's rendering work w em tho?
Fine, I've got an A380 in my NAS as mentioned, and I've got it fully exposed to Emby, but works fine in Jellyfin. Remuxing a 4k fully w/ tone mapping/etc at full speed runs it around 40-60% of it's render core, so it's possible I could render 2 full 4k streams at once.
that's impressive for a weird GPU
I may consider intel GPU in a year or two mostly bc I'm not living at home, but office rn
Yup, works super well, I was suprised as I've got a couple and I expected to need something bigger, but it handled it fine, ran about 2.3x rate, so it stayed slightly ahead of where I was.
iirc the price of it for such work is also p reasonable AM LOOKING AT U NVIDIA
Yeah, I paid 100$ for this one.
I've got an A770 somewhere that I'll be using for XIV model rendering when I get back around to that project after wrapping up the insanity I've got pending w/ the XIVAPI replacement on kupo.
yer living in an office? 😮
I'll be putting it through giga-abuse soon when I transcode my entire media library over to h.265 xD
yeah, my apartment is like right opposite to the office, and work 887 (8am-8pm-7 days a week)
2 years till the contract expires btw
ooooof holy crap

a GT3 but smoof
NO CHRONO WTF
lol jk
Sport Chrono package is just kinda whatever
It’s like 2k or something so everybody adds it lmao
It’s like Rubystone Red
That color exploded cause Porsche made it a 5k paint option instead of paint to sample only
Like for a minute 1 out of every 10 Porsche sold was a Rubystone, massive amount of Cayennes in that color which TBH its fucking awesome for a pink
lime green would be a fun color for le porsche
i also like this combo
maybe not those wheels specifically but the gold/blue is nice
My friend wants a GT3 as his bucket car. He honestly probably makes enough now to buy one if he wanted to, but $200-250k is still a lot of money...
SEA, black company/family bizz are a thing
A panamera would fit me best but I just can't see myself spending more than 50k on a car
And what's worse
I really like being the first owner lmao

man, fuck vodafone. my fucking ping looks like some fucked up heartrate monitor
ping spiking into the hundreds every few seconds
ooooooooooof
thats not what I expect from a home isp
thats a tremor not jitter lol
we moved into this place about a year ago and we have had nonstop issues. internet constantly dies etc
coax or dsl?
if its coax the ISP probally needs to check the signal into your apt.
SNR probally not in an acceptable range
usually checking modem logs can tell you that
unless you got fiber then
idk
its coax and yes they did that already. i think i have like 20 tickets by now with them
this piece of shit box doesnt show shit in the logs unfortunately
last time a technician was here, did some shit to the wallsocket and cable in there, said he had to go check in the basement and will be back in a bit and then fucking disappeared
got the modem model number by chance?
its their own thing
the "logs" they have in the "expert mode" are just a bunch of wifi devices connecting and disconnecting as well as this
its useless
is this the only box? only thing I can find is that its the router not a modem
got 90€ discount now for the next bills and another 24h connection test from them but oh well
also that its fucking shit LOL
they arent seperate here
i should have gotten the fritzbox ngl. those things at least work and have useful logs. since my issue wont be resolved tomorrow either, i will bully them into upgrading me for free to them
I heard the fritzboxs are actually good lol
i had one back at my dads place. it worked so much better.
also right now this vodafone box has a wifi antenna powerful enough to give us fullspeed connection to it even if we are in the restaurant 80m away.
my fucking phone connects to my wifi before i even see my house, this is so unnecessary
i just wanted to play some modded insurgency coop man, but this thing is warping me around the map every few seconds
how much power is going throught that attennae lOL
are you using cable or fiber
it sounds like it might be fiber with moca over coax

Fwiw if it’s broadcasting that strongly, you’re basically drowning out your neighbors’ Wi-Fi at best. At worst, you’re a target of opportunity for someone to poke at your network.
Also, anyone else read the article this week about the cybertrash body panels being so fucking razor sharp that just looking at one sent someone to the ER with a slashed wrist?
lmao what
what
Lemme pull the article
Like seriously, if you have body panels with raw edges slicing people apart, you have manufacturing flaws to deal with
god how does the cybertruck still keep getting worse
You mean worse than coolant leaks not being covered under warranty even if they occur less than 50 miles on the odometer?

I would want a gaming PC like an actual one but it's not possible rn at all. Is there any Gaming Laptop that's at least optimal for a good 2 years or so. I have a pretty good budget but if 1200 only gives me "enough" I'll take it.
yep that's pretty much it. With imacs you get matching colored apple stickers!
although apparently with new ipads apple stopped doing that
and their reasoning is that they're trying to make their packaging more environmentally friendly by eliminating plastic
.... this is ofc blatant bullshit because apple's packaging is incredibly not environmentally friendly ><
it's like a case study into how to make the most not-environmentally-friendly packaging ever
i would never

There’s also the alienware m16 r2 if you can get a good open box deal for around 1500ish
These specs are good enough for 14 when DT releases right? I assume that's already a yes.
Yeah they’re more than enough for dt
Dt still supports ps4 so you will be more than fine
You're right but I kinda wanna see how I can play on a CPU.
…
What's the matter
That and there's some other games I'd like to play sorry
I wasn't getting one specifically for 14.
It’s still more than good depending on the game
Thanks. I'll take a look at em.
I heard about HP Omen brand being pretty good. I might just get it next week.
Lenovo legion ones are good besides tha lack of control of stuff like fan curves
They don’t let u touch anything remotely bios related but everything else is good
Build quality and their screens are better than the competition mostly
What an ironic question coming from you
have we really stooped so low that we're recommending alienware?
Off topic to current discussion, but is there a way to force youtube to play 1080p videos at 1440p, a way to upscale, or are the videos cursed to play blurry on my 1440p monitor
I know scaling and pixel size etc is the issue, just curious on if theres work arounds
it just depends what res they're uploaded as
if a 1080p video is uploaded that's the best you're getting
rip, was hoping that wasnt the case
they are plenty fine (when the laptop I'm typing on now with a 3050 is good to go with dlss for reference)
instead of those 2 however I would throw this as a suggestion (at the upper end of the budget going by the numbers) https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1745682-REG/lenovo_82wk0083us_16_legion_pro_5i.html
It’s honestly a solid laptop tbf
I would not get anything with that cpu in it for gaming lol
The other ones are trash alienware laptops
That’s asking for thermal issues
a 4050 laptop for 1500 bucks?
fuck that
there was a 4060 laptop linked here the other day for 800
Alienware do not make a single good product outside of monitors
And that’s mostly not even them bc they don’t do much with the panel
Alienware were briefly an option during covid because they could actually source gpus, but other than that nope
Majority of stuff if u buy from dell instead of alienware it’s better lol
The only good products are the OLED monitors
And occasionally if ur a pro level esports player they’ll come out with a stupid monitor for that
the only thing i don't like about dell/alienware monitors is their antiglare coating
Having a hard time deciding if I want my replacement monitor to be curved or not.
Ig for dual monitors flats probably better
But I'm so used to gaming on a curved
My current monitor is a samsung c27hg70, but it's lived a long life span and is starting to have issues
Curved is so nice, but I feel like it's weird with my secondary monitor unless I go vertical on secondary
idk
i use a flat monitor next to a very very curved one
ehehehe
wow it ignored my submission
took like half a minute to do that though
Lenovo - Legion Slim 5 16" Ryzen 5 7640HS with 16GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 8GB - 512GB SSD - Storm Grey
@modest moss @dense temple what do you think of this for 900?
fine for the price, secondary issue(s) personally is the non-expandable ram and only one SSD M.2 slot which is already occupied. Ymmv if that's enough room for your needs.
Question. Could one of those recommendations run Elden Ring? I'm bored with my PS4 rn and I'm wondering if I should just hold until I buy the laptop.
Since I'm likely gonna order it next week.
Nvm lemme activate like 1 of my braincells and do a spec research
I see, I don't mind the single SSD slot but 16gb max ram is a deal-breaker
wait I was maybe remembering improperly https://youtu.be/FwUoLbMhiWk

There's two ram slots but you'd have to buy two new RAM sticks
and don't know what laptop ram prices are like
I see
they have one at my local best buy so in that case I might actually get this
16gb ram is fine imo
if you're only gaming at 1080p with a 4060 it's about what you'd expect
why would you want a slim gaming laptop that shit is gonna thermal throttle and die after a year
so they can keep it plugged in at their desk until the battery swells
and use it like a gaming desktop
The forbidden pillow 🙏
LOL "but I need something portable"
dude i lost that argument so many times in my teens on IRC
them: I need a gaming computer
me: Here's some pointers on parts
them: no I was thinking of this acer laptop for $600 from walmart
me:
it was ALWAYS that fucking acer laptop too
and then like a year later they'd come back asking for help because it broke apart lol
Coward
The struggle is figuring it out

Maybe i will expand its capabilities to house more folks but it is already going to be taxing with 30 folks 🙃
he can't ban me if he never invites me, innit
Why did discord put me here
I still lose this argument
Because they can never be convinced
They don't want a desktop but refuse to say that
And instead use the excuse "I want something portable"
That or the MSI one with hinges that break after 6 months
i was going to say that but didn't want to be mean lol
gigabyte laptops ftw
yea ofc, I wonder what the reason is that they don't wanna say? fashion?
or is it just
i've heard of people not wanting desktops 'because they take up too much space' before
i knew someone that only played games laying in bed lol
tfw steam deck is perfect for that
but laptop for that thing is heavy af man
gigabyte lappy hinge is huge mannn
it's okay
I'm using a gigabyte rn
prolly for the case
but then peep could go for SFF build and stuff
yea but that wasl ike 10 years ago lol
OH lol ya
True Apple lightning devices are more expensive to make. So instead of conforming to the Apple standard, these companies have made headphones that receive audio via bluetooth — avoiding the Apple specification — while powering the bluetooth chip via a wired cable, thereby avoiding any need for a battery.
Oh fuk that true. Brb makin server to ban Shue from
Making a more expensive version of an already bad case
well the y70 is like resized-ish y60
i dont know how msi still choses to produce the worst fucking hinges known to man
*I don't know how MSI continues to make the worst fucking products in the industry and survives
idk how they are in late 2023-now but they are my highest RMA count over all, so uhujffjjstk
oh
rip
Their am4 stuff was prettys olid
I think one of their itx b450 boards was just a default recommendation for a time
YMMV but I have the policy not to service them and multiple times in this channel it's been wtf why is your motherboard so broken? oh MSI.
only had 4+2 phases but they happened to be good quality
ah
odd
funnily enough
ive heard asrock's been on the upturn in the past few years
as far as value goes, anyways
god I hope so, I usually only able to recommend gigashart now
more options would be nice
Asus has some QC daddy issues to hell and back
their motherboards have been decent, at least
They consistently tend to be the only company that releases boards with vrms that don't absolutely fucking suck in the budget range

I've just kinda
accepted that the budget range has been kneecapped in the recent gens
and push more mid tier ish builds
I do budget builds if they under stand the caveats, otherwise I'm like just save another 200-400$
Yeah, the $1000 PC is often not worth building these days
you can work around it
but it's definitely limiting
They typically have the cheapest gaming laptop when you compare spec for spec so I’m not entirely surprised they cut costs elsewhere rofl
almost entirely a pointless price point, just get a $200 mini pc
I got a bee-link recent for that roughly, runs plex great, came with w11 installed, would be fine for facebook, blah blah
It used to be a pricepoint
back in 2013
just doesnt exist anymore
yeah it's a real shame it's not possible nowadays
there used to be a lot of "console killer" builds back in the day because pc hardware good enough to run titles that a similarly priced console could, did exist
Nah $400 is doable if u just buy a few parts used tbh
500 is a more ideal starting point but consoles are also 500 now
we are takling new here assumably. Near the tail end of my business I actually stopped going used as its become a fucking liability nightmare post covid and pricing in my region is basically buying the worstr products for 50$ less of a new equivalent.
$50 less than a new one can be a good saving tho
and for the most part the system requirements have ballooned to the point where I am not comfortable recomending some of the older stuff to my clients because I know they want something that can play a game a year or two down the line with the same quality.
U can get stuff in a 400-500 budget that’ll run games fine
Just don’t try and play games above 1080p
An a580 or rx6600 is like $160 now
: P I just pander to my clients and nothing here is 500$ budget because our market is fucked and dollar is fucked. Our budget goes as low as 700$ usually. I also do not get an a580 for them because its more headache for support down the line
the build I usually go with is an rx6600 and whatever i3 I had on the shelf
jesus christ, i got some one sooo pissed off when i told him that there are not selling any motherboards with integrated gpus >.>
and the reason was because he confused the integrated GPU in CPUs…….
I’d get a 6600 or used 5700xt/1080 and a 3600/5500 bc am4 is dirt cheap too
good for you! 👍
I am currently considering getting a new graphics card. is it worth to upgrade from a rtx 3060 to the 40 series cards or should I wait until later this year when they announce the 50 series?
Depends which 40 series card
Something like the 4070s yeah
4060 or 4060ti no
The only reason to upgrade is if ur not happy with what ur getting out of ur pc rn anyway
yeah that's what one of my friends told me too. I am just unsure what to get considering that we will likely get a new series at the end of the year. I want to play the playstation studio games on max settings + 4k and 60 fps
Idk what games ur referring to
4K isn’t doable on most triple A games unless you buy a 4080 or 7900xtx tho
I wouldn’t buy anything for that rn
I put 3k aside for new hardware but I only want to spend 1,8k - 2k at max because everything above that is overkill
