it's really stupid that I want it XD
it's the cheapest 2019 mac pro for sale on ebay
and it's brand new
ttbh i almost wonder if the price was a mistake lol
they themselves have refurbs with lower specs that cost more
So why is it that antenna TV tech hasn't really evolved much? Like why can't they develop an internal antenna in the TV that works like a cell phone antenna?
I want to watch network stuff on an antenna but it's next to impossible here because all the stations we get are concentrated in mostly one area 100 miles away.
@modern iris nowadays it's digital signal. I'm surprised u would still receive any antenna broadcast. At least for 1st world countries
Unless you have an outdoor/roof model you're fucked here.
I bet
You need at least an 80 mile range one.
I used to be able to get Fox at my old apartment though.
I remember I loved those portable tvs, 8 inches 4:3 screen and loooong antenna 📡
Many years ago..
Handheld tv
Bc a cell phone antenna is designed to only have to go around 2mi max and it's actively boosted. Most TV antennas are passive. Also there are a bunch of new/improved designs, hence the bevy of cheaper retangular/flat ones that are good for shorter distances, or the ones that almost look like satellite dishes.
Also depending on where you live, if you're in an apartment building where the TV station is on the opposite end of the building, you might be trying to punch through 20 walls to receive the signal. That attenuates the signal a lot. Your best options are either an indoor antenna with direct LOS out a window, or an external one you put out on your patio or deck with direct LOS or as close to it.
Outdoor Amplified HDTV Antenna - 150 Miles Range - 360° Rotation This outdoor HDTV antenna is designed to receive digital TV UHF/VHF signals while providing high quality HDTV picture. You can enjoy high definition television without the high cost of cable or satellite. With a built-in rotor, Turn...
Mount it on a piece of wood and zip-tie that hanging out your window if you have to
Just turn building exteriors into antennae 👍
HAM's have done some hilarious investigation on hiding an antenna from HOA.
Could probably put it into a bush or in the canopy of a patio set umbrella i bet
Run the coax down the center pole of the umbrella
Otherwise it's ugly, but you could probably hang it near the ceiling in a closet even or something. Would lose some range, but still probably be better than the strictly indoor ones.
Great answer
personally I don't give a shit how many antennae my neighbours stick on their houses as long as they're quiet after midnight
you can dye your house like a Paissa, just let me sleep in on the weekend
I could zip tie it to a post maybe.
You honestly probably could. Coil wire back and forth on top of the moisture barrier before putting the siding up over it
because cellphone antennas are all over the place. radio/tv antennas are usually pretty far away.
for example, here's a tv antenna map in LA
and this... this is just AT&T 4g towers in LA
and it's not even all of them
that map loads kinda funny.
but just to compare the density here lol
Would be nice to have that kind of antenna coverage here. I'm lucky to get ABC.
yea... in my experience the worst reception case is hilly areas
but LA and las vegas too... great places to just grab out a tv and use some cheap rabbit ears and get like 50 tv channels haha
the one that makes me laugh is i get hsn and jewelrytv via antenna
A lot of our stations are 100 miles away.
Didn't realize there's an entire subbredit devoted to swollen batteries lol
I bought my 2017 Macbook Air from Spicketriver. They’re decent.
chunky grater and fine grater
i feel silly saying it's a shame they dropped xeons lol :3
trash can
i still don't love apple silicon
too much compromise on i/o to use a fucking smartphone chip in a desktop computer
but the results speak for themselves lol
power mac G5 is such an iconic design (I guess thats technically the mac pro but w/e)
yea the 2019 is much more polarizing if you ask me
and somehow they look even better in person
assuming they arent scratched to shit
even then
imho best looking tower ever made lol
the thermal flaw the g5 has is annoying af though
this is the backside of the motherboard
that little blower back there? that's what cools that giant system controller heatsink
and it gets very hot
like if you ever use a g5 and it sounds like one of the fans is going crazy - it's that one
yea they also had capacitor plague and rohs solder issues
cold solder joints that killed the psus
mine has a dead psu because of that lol
i was more pissed off abotu the mdd g4 i had before that :\
same thing happened to the PSU
Guess I'm swapping to Firefox 💀

Old news but I was only just informed of it.
the US Justice Department is about to sue Apple as soon as tomorrow, Bloomberg reports. The DOJ will reportedly accuse Apple of blocking rivals from accessing iPhone hardware and software features https://t.co/w6V8ccr9jU
Radeon drivers kek
ah we have a wannabe elon musk have we
ya know, i'd love it if my monitor had multiple profiles - like one with picture-by-picture configured a certain way, and one with picture-by-picture turned off
hm, perhaps not a place to ask, but wanna to have some advices.
I kinda want to cool off my room (16m2) which is directly below a waterproof concrete roof (50m2), which just love absorbing all sunlight heat and make my room an oven from noon to night. A/C helps, but the moment is turns off, my room is quickly reheated. Some methods I consider:
-Reflective Paint: within my budget and can apply on the whole roof, but I'm not sure about effectiveness. Some users said it works, some said it helps very little
-Install an outdoor heat-insulation roof: seems work best, but way over my budget just to add a shade area directly above my room, and kill my whole saving for the whole roof.
-Install steel poles and spread outdoor net on top of the roof: cheapest solution. a makeshift roof to prevent sunlight from hitting the roof, but still provide sunlight sufficiently for skywell. The thing is wear and tear which requires replacements more often., though, and if they get yanked by storms, it may be dangerous for everyone or everything that it hits.
-Install a mist spray on the roof: cooling with water is within my budget and I can even water my plants that way. With strategic nozzle placement to cover areas effectively and smart timers to spray just enough and at right time, I think the method works the best with not much increased costs, or even save costs as my room cools down means my A/C will work less to achieve set temperature, and I will use my A/C less too, according to people's opinions. The problem is that I cannot prove that it helps with the bills until I use it, so my family members are kinda unsupportive cuz they imagine a jacked-up bill

sorry about wall of text 😄
Got the gaming setup in my marijuana production facilities
Gotta be on that growing mindset
gotta play farming simulator at the weed farm
SEA bro?
Because one way I found effective was using an exhaust fans
The types they use for kitchens or labs
But this was relyingnon outside weather being not humid hot
But i improvised, using a bag of ice in front of the exhaust fan
Pulling air in, but cooling it too
reddit net cafe? XD
Me watching a video of a bunch of software engineers being interviewed and some of them make a base salary of 200k with up to 600k potential take home depending on bonuses and stock values
really showing off the 1 percent
What’s funny is that only one of those people was a man
Otherwise it looked like people were ranging 80-150k
With some extreme outliers obviously, but some companies really juice their senior employees
Like giving stock payouts is kinda crazy
Literally make double or triple your yearly income
I do assume that just gets rolled into a normal 1099 and you get taxed on it just like normal income
yeah SEA brotherhood :3
loved by El Nino and gonna heating till June
I have an exhaust fan installed. It helps somewhat, but not much 😦
Nah. U dont use it conventionally
U use it like a roided up table fan
If u got two
U can have one fan pullin air in, one pushing out
like my PC case? 😄
Kinda
Its used for other things too tbh
Old buildings have tall roofs with vents at the top so hot air rises and pulls air into the house
roof exhaust fans do help, that's why they are popular
hmm... tactical grass in location for quick touch?
used to have one next to my window which is connected to a sky well. Mom hated it though cuz rain got into it. Instead of thinking of a cover, she just had it nuked after a house renovation and replace it with a bolted plastic sheet. Hot air till go up and escape, but no longer as fast as before 😦
and since it is my room becoming hot, not hers, it is no biggie
if you can hack it, tpo roof membrane. most of the effect in reflective coating (Interlac 1) is going to be a white or nearly colour so if you spray the roofing go with something that will take the weather.
also make sure air isn't leaking in through windows/outside doors
Tech tip #37: it takes between 7 and 10 eggs to fill up a typical pc liquid cooling loop
💖 746 🔁 24
But how long does it take to cook?
with an intel cpu? not that long
I wonder if there will be a large shift in how x86 chips are laid out for the next gen or if the engineers have totally lost their imagination and we're in for 700W cpus that try to hold a 7 ghz core clock
More hertz must be better, right?

https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/21/tech/apple-sued-antitrust-doj/index.html
Normally I'd dismiss CNN reporting but.. If Apple loses a potential anti-trust lawsuit, what happens?
Like would they make it so there couldn't be a software/hardware lock in? ie. Mac OS being installable on a PC legally, Android software being usable on iPhone hardware, etc.
classic apple move
iirc they also like to copy third party app features and then ban the original app from the AppStore for replicating iOS functionality
Most likely. That seems to be the logical conclusion. Apple Watch on Android, Apple Wallet on Android, improved messaging (like, no more green bubbles and stuff). Basically repeat what Europe did to Apple.
All the while, Apple is bitching and moaning
I believe in choice when it comes to shit like this.
It would set an interesting precedent though. Would the ruling potentially affect game companies? Like could it make console exclusives or timed exclusives illegal?
The idea being giving end users a choice in how they use software. If a person wants to be able to use MacOS on a non-Apple computer, they should be able to.
I highly doubt it. Smartphones and computers in general are much more pervasive in modern society than video games. These devices affect the lives of normal, everyday people more so than Final Fantasy VII Rebirth being a PS5 exclusive. Game exclusivity will remain a policy type of thing by Sony and Microsoft.
Oh, so this would be more focused on computer software and productivity stuff, and smartphones.
I want iOS on my work phone, Android is complete ass.
Android is ass because the hardware is ass and has dogshit support and integration
Your choices are incompetent Google who has decided to make hardware they don't know how to make and incompetent Samsung who doesn't give a shit for quality and just floods the zone with overlapping and confusing skus
Yeah, Walmart started issuing Androids to every associate instead of us having to compete for TCs. Problem is it's Walmart and they decided to use Samsung XCover Pro instead of something decent like an S21.
Samsung makes a lot of products but they're all garbage
The quality revolution they had in 2004 is long gone
This thing has no RAM, no battery capacity at all which is a problem because our productivity app has the camera on 24/7 and it sucks the battery dry. It's so slow.
Lmao, rugged military grade
Tell me you don't know what durable means without telling me
True
The cases they issued it with are durable though.
Samsung has some serious quality control issues
Didn't they ship an entire line of phones that blew up?
The Note 7
Yes, because their ceo is a corrupt moron who overrode the engineering team and forced them to jam an oversized battery into an undersized phone chassis
In between bribing government officials
The latest Samsung phones also have a very short battery shelf life like people reporting Batteries bloating after only 2 years
And Samsung owns a chunk of South Korea basically, don't they?
If you fly Latam airlines they specifically mention the Note 7 as being forbidden to carry, it's funny
Yes, there is literally a Samsung city lmao
sometimes I wonder what these people do to their phones
Fast charging destroys batteries mad fast
Browse porn in the workplace bathroom
I killed my LG battery module like four times with fast charging
But that phone had replaceable batteries
They have tracking software on those phones so they know everything you look up on them.
The ones at our job I mean.
I had my 6S and my 10 for four years each.
"LinkedIn" "how to get a new job" "how to beat a drug test"
I mean I'm surprised I didn't get flagged because I got bored and started reading about military hardware on mine at break.
My LG lasted a long time, the pixel 6 I have is absolute fucking dick on the ground trash
A-10 Warthog my beloved
Google should have just contracted the pixel line to LG or sony
But I guess thry wouldn't be able to cram useless ~ai~ features in if they don't control the hardware too
No toasters.
Agreed
Samsung really that bad to yall? My s9 lasted me 5 years and could have kept going if I didn't upgrade just to get a new one
Apple Watch on Android
That would be Awesome
and yea the antitrust seems to be stuff like that
you use an iphone, only apple watches have that much access and they gimp it hard for 3rd party smartwatches
you want an apple watch? Your only option is to also have an iphone
one of the kinda-sorta-tough ones is apple pay lol
apple being an asshole to nudge other banks to allow their customers to use apple pay instead of forcing them into ChasePay, BofaPay, etc was... a good thing.....
but then demanding a cut of the transaction because apple well....
and that's the part where I hate apple too lol
apple feels entitled to a cut of any transaction made using an iphone/ipod/mac/whatever
what that means to an iphone user is their iphone doesn't cost them just $799
it costs them $799 plus a small chunk of literally every single thing they buy from their iphone
imagine if your car charged a 1% fee every time you took it to a drive thru to buy food
that's called a sales tax
yea it's not quite a fair argument because technically the car isn't moving the money, and tbh if there was ChevyPay, GM would probably try to charge a fee for it lmao
while simultaneously branding it as ChevyPay, myCadillacPay, GMCProfessionalPay, etc
in a way I feel like it's bad for the customer if the hardware, the software, and the services are all sold by the same vendor
but at the same time, they kinda have to be
when starting a new platform there's no way to just create a platform and hope developers will show up and make things for it
but perhaps, what needs to be done is they need to have the 3 pieces of apple firewalled/split and setup financially so that say, apple music has no unfair competitive edge over spotify or tidal or whatever
You need to break these huge megacorps apart like ma bell
And then pass aggressive legislation that prevents thanos from reassembling the infinity gauntlet
(this is what Verizon did over the 40 years ma bell was destroyed)
The good ole Apple eco system
Don't give them any ideas

vlc or k-lite codec for me but I've been hanging on VLC for a while
can easily connect to your chromecast, plenty of 3rd party option to use your phone as a remote
oh cool I didn't know that elephant is an imperial measurement unit
Qualcomm says most Windows games should "just work" on upcoming Snapdragon X Elite systems. I'm hopeful, but I'll believe it when I see it given x86 emulation on Windows hasn't been great so far https://t.co/uAcpbT1Omp
Ah the Todd Howard approach
ya know, I haven't heard anything at all about the apple vision pro lately lol
i get the vibe the tech isn't there lol
one of the tricky parts is that they're targeting productivity use not entertainment use. So far I think all the other headsets in that general category except for hololens are focusing on entertainment use
and with the way it works, i unfortunately couldn't use one for home & work use so it's limited to 'use as a toy' lol
(you can only use it with devices tied to 1 apple account)
As i understand it, the icons AND the control with fingers were p good
Display wise it was good
I prefer Media Player Classic - BE or Home Cinema over VLC. Better interface and features
I always considered VLC the best because it runs on damn near anything
but the android version pisses me off
doesn't work with a dvd player
for android and music only, I use Retro Music instead of VLC
if youre talking audio files i recommend MusicBee. Its solid
this is interesting
according to that sales study, apple sells more mac pros than they do mac minis and mac studios combined
.... how?!
From what I can see, they poll about 500 purchasers every quarter, that is where they get their numbers and extrapolate from there.
hahhahaa
Now u know hahahaaaa
in other words, guesstimate?
idk somehow no matter how big my desk is, I fill it up lol
like mine is end-to-end monitors
but yea, monitors.. good speakers for music, a microphone, your keyboard/mouse/mousepad, a wireless charger for your phone perhaps, maybe anime figures? XD uh potted plants (fake or real), a lamp?

(not my taste but....) collection of empty energy drink cans and/or ramune bottles and/or diet mt dew cans?
A fossil was recycled
ya know, there are some vintage computing nerds that would love that thing
I think my computer architecture prof when I was in uni collected these type of old comp, the one that has turbo button etc
I remember coming to his office, stacked of PC like these, not sure whats the purpse
old pc turbo button isn't to "make it faster", but to slow it down
it is true
the actual turbo speed is the default
upon pressing the button it reduces the speed
so what's the point? to save power?
ye
also based on old ass german forum posts, at least over here a lot of people believed running at full power would make your pc break very quickly
I see a lot of shit like that tbh
Recycling is crazy in my area. I've seen people recycle functioning 30 series gpus
The og Xbox still functioning
This is picking up, as people are getting better at SMT, so they're jamming way too much vram on older cards for AI purposes. 😄
Hey man as long as you aren't being wasteful tbh
I think some people are just negligent with money in my area
Rural area so I don't think a lot of people are doing things like that
no, actually it was to make games playable
see back then games running fast meant they were literally unplayable
oh games tied to clock speed
this was an issue with very old games that came out on the 8085(?) series CPUs
neat
yeah
close, they were usually on 286/386 systems
I remember even Pentium setups having problems
if you played Sonic 3 & Knuckles on anything faster than an early pentium it ran way too fast rofl
Was like $2500 in 1990s money new I think...
SimTower was another one I remember like that. Tried going back and playing it around 2005 and even the slowest setting was too fast to do anything. I think eventually they released a newer version of it with a wrapper that simulated a sane clockspeed
oh yeah haha
thankfully the practice of tying game functions to clockspeed was dropped

yea, i've been pretty happy with my regular airpods and digged those transparent beats since they came out. but then i saw the blue ones also on sale for not much more, and those have an h1 chip so they'd act like the airpods do..... which is both good and bad? XD
i kinda don't care for the 'automatically connects to your device' because I have mine paired to a bunch of things and it always chooses the wrong thing XD

IEM can noise cancel/noise insulation passively pretty well (depend on the fit)
I'm using Moondrop Space Travel, has ANC btw
And it's like wat 20 buck LMAO
Ok checked the price at my place, ye 20-30 buck, ok sounds (lack of bass, ok mid, weird high note, stramgely quiet on android but that's fine to me), has ANC, ok hear thru, kinda questionable low latecy mode
AND WAIFU VOICE
IEM are among the best options for noise canceling audio devices ngl

thanks for the heads up
while the blue ones use the h1 chipset, the clear ones don't, so I could see them being even more troublesome
unless they straight up use crappier batteries too or something
IoT devices
that reminds me: I bought these tapo plugs for a couple of lamps that are annoying to manually turn on/off
Yeah, I fucking hate iot devices
they paired easily enough....
only to almost IMMEDIATELY drop out of my tapo app never to be seen again
with the app citing 'unstable connection' as the reason
I just bought a set of cync hexagons because gril wanted them and I know that mcu is never going to get updated again
bro my APs report the signal strength to them as excellent, as they should, since they're not even 5 fucking feet away
tbh I think the way to go with legit IoT
They were immediately hijacked by some unpatched exploit in the ancient ass eeprom they're using
is to just use zigbee/z-wave with a hub that gets regular updates
and/or just say fuck it and use a zig/z-wave dongle and a linux machine running home assistant
I feel like there's no way to have a network aware device be genuinely secure without a spider on it
You can't have a dumb device just hanging in the breeze waiting for the master to command it
yea
Iot is cursed because it was never designed for security or convenience
again, zig/z-wave devices.. I like em. that said
but uh there is one use case where the fancier newer stuff is cooler >>
the newer wifi schlage locks that support homekey
you can hold your apple watch up to them and they unlock lol
You protected yourself but that doesn't harden the devices themselves from being hijacked and attacking other devices
Jesus christ, what a fucking security nightmare
hehe
I'm immediately enraged
honestly it can't be any worse than enterprise security
That's like breaking three zu eggs
those magnetic locks that fail open
and the god-knows-how-old-it-is HID security system
ahhahaha
Or the magnetic locks you can open with a fucking n58 magnet bar
yep
It has 506604060350 unique key combinations, you'll never open it!
tbh those are probably still ok enough if you have live security guards i guess
thonk
but yea tbh tbh tbh
i'd trust the schlage lock about as much as i'd trust that unifi secure stuff
maybe more?
it's a pretty popular iot lock and if there was an exploit it'd be all over the news instantly
The smarter it is the worse the security is, it's like the people designing this stuff doesn't live in an area with criminals
ubiquiti would sweep it under the rug lol 😄
Which is wild since they live in the bay area lmao
and then pretend the issue didn't exist until it got exposed on reddit in a massive shitpost
ehhhhhhhhhhh
again there's levels of risk
Schlage is a respectable security name, I don't expect them to have left a hilariously open hole like "a strong magnet"
But anything with like, nfc access can be spoofed or cloned
It's just less secure than ye Olde pins by at least one degree of magnitude
locks fall down the whole trap of "I spent $500 on a fancy medeco lock and a triple armored door handle and they threw a brick through the nearest window"
Yeah lmao
where i grew up you were actually better off with a cheap ass deadbolt because they jam when you try to bump them
Or they cut the door out of the wall because your triple point door is attached to a fucking 2x4 frame and hollow drywall lmao
a fancy lock wouldn't jam
pops the face off, jumps 3-5v signal line
the two times my house got broken into someone used a bump key ><
i was kinda miffed about it because the secodn time the lock jammed lol
so that's what someone did to our vegas house once uhhhh
they just kicked the door where the deadbolt is
turns out the doorframe is just multiple pieces of wood jointed together
Yep, that's how you break a reinforced door lmao
so the part where the deadbolt goes in just pops off lmao
The metal bolt acts like a hooligan and rips the frame apart instead
the annoying thing is I didn't know for 2 weeks because my fucking UPS died and took the alarm system internet connection with it
and tthis is why i hate UPSes now
useless piece of shit
the only UPS I'd buy is a rackmount apc or something
the consumer models are trash ><
eh
IDK how things are in your area
Except you need to charge the stupid thing and that's not an option for anyone who lives in an apartment
-shrug-
i think new apartments here come standard with ev chargers
with rental houses i see it more and more now
Every single person I've spoken to who has a tesla in Manhattan hates it, it's a huge bitch to find a charger
So you have to dick around for an hour looking for a charger station
but i still only see it maybe 10-20% of the time
I do agree that owning an EV doesn't make sense if you can't charge at home
or.. OR! you don't drive much and you don't mind taking it to a charger once a week or something
i fall into that use case myself atm
It's purely a suburban project at the moment, the areas that benefit the most from electrification don't have the infrastructure for it at all
idk what it would cost to install an ev charger here, probably not cheap because the main panel for my house is all the way in the back and my driveway is in the front
Probably not that much for a 240v drop
but spending say $3k to install a power outlet in that case
doesn't sound horrible if i were spending $60k on a car
A 480vdc would probably be expensive though
like to me, the EVs sound like a pretty sweet deal
Probably a sensor error in the sample and hold
i could just plug it in at night and have a fully charged car in the morning for any of my usual needs
never have to go to a gas station, no oil changes
regen braking means the brake pads/rotors probably last forever
Unless it measures the 240 after the inverter and it includes the conversion loss
Welcome to driving a stick 👍
anecdotal evidence means nothing, but all of the people I've talked to who own EVs don't do anything with them except wash them and take em once every couple years for a checkup
meh
i'm not hard on brakes
like tbh
Big based
Daddy Elon hard at work with quality as usual
I killed the stock pads in my subie like four years ago
like i daily drove a car to 107k miles and never had to change the brake pads lol
i'm easy on brakes i guess XD
my oldest bro is very hard on brakes though >>
you could import it probably
there are loopholes
its how BMW NA got euro M3's in Canada
there is some weird agreement between one of the nordic countries and Canada that lets cars come in no issues
but that adds lots of complexity to getting the cars in to begin with
living with a RHD vehicle would also be really impractical
I know the larger JDM import company in Canada imports a stupid amount of cars
they have like 20 V12 Century's in their warehouse rn
the Toyota Vellfire is also an option
you can even buy armored ones lmao
cause Japan moment
tbh for me I just need a do it all car
so an m5 would be my choice
F10 M5 is one of the cars of all time
actual full size rear seats and a spacious trunk
good power/good brakes
the only issue I have with most cars is the brakes are bad
and I regularly drive in canyons
electric cars dont impress me cause for the price, even used, you can buy actual luxury cars for the same price that out perform them in every aspect
I would rather buy an older Mercedes S Class and pay the maintenance on it and the insurance than a crappy Model 3. cause they are literally the same price.
20~40k for a 2013 W221 S class that was originally 100-150k
if I could afford a Polestar 1 I would do that cause Hybrids are cool
yuh hybrid makes more sense
the only thing I do not like about the Volvo's is the stupid card for a key thing
cause that is a massive security issue
omw to spoof ur Model S Plaid cause its easy as hell
all the extra "safety" stuff isnt legally required at least in the US
but the stuff that is statistically proven to save lives more often than not IS
automatic braking, certain impact sensors etc
also damn is that Volvo van coming to the US
I see the chinese script on it so idk if it would actually 😔
bougie af Volvo
I found out that Tesla's are broke people cars in China
in terms of the social ladder lmao
cause Tesla's are apparently insanely cheap
what makes me sad is that Volvo even went the way of the SUV and cross over 😔
their Wagons were unironically some of the best cars out there
for basically everything
V60 Polestar is no more
those tail lights arent that offensive
👍
the new Porsche Taycan is kinda nuts
the new top trim Turbo GT
only 2 seconds slower around the entirey of the Nurburgring than the 2 million dollar Rimac Nevera
and it only costs 300k (which is still a lot but is hell of a bargain compared)
oh its only 230k starting with the track pack
So I had a video card that Im sure was starting to fail (no video output without repeated reboots, random splitsecond black screeens)
And I noticed after replacing the card, Im seeing the bios start screen (the press DEL or F2 to access bios) and realized I havent seen it in MONTHS
is it possible that card wasnt displaying for a bit after i powered on my system all those times, or was something else going on?
yea, the got dang Taycan Cross Turismo (wagon body) is the only one that didnt get hit super hard by depreciation
that one is very comfy in the back seats
standard one not so much imo
the new Macan will be EV but uh
I hate being in a Macan
so I hope they massively changed the interior and body to accommodate passengers better
im trying to think of other cars that have plenty of space and are actually nice that have depreciated a lot
there really arent that many that I can think of
cause imo all the newer SUV's and Crossovers either suck at a lot of things or are really good at a lot of things but are massive and are an issue for driving around town without being THAT guy
mini vans arent real
the highest rated one from Car and Driver is the Sienna Hybrid but they have some minor complaints for it
They're also the worst of everything they hybridize
Body roll like a beer belly getting punched by a heavyweight boxer
gotta drive better smh
but any car wont drive as good as something with active dampers
and minivans shouldnt be too bad
the last one I was in wasnt really bad
it was to be expected of what is a unibody vehicle that is just a tall car
The only not car I've driven recently I liked was the gla
Everything else is tuned like absolute shit, who likes these weird spongy rides
I mean you are comparing a Mercedes to other brands
like a GLA can come with double thick glass even iirc
Luxury vs Everything else
It's the closest I've been able to get to my own car when I'm stuck with a rental
I'm just mystified at who test drives these suspension setups and is like "needs more undamped bouncing and nose dive"
its cause its cheap to not include it
actual setups to cope with the weight of vehicles are fairly expensive
aftermarket is cheap but thats cause there is no guarantee :3
Ohlins dampers on everything imo
if they just did that with the larger SUV's that would be nice
the mf Polestar 2 rides so good cause of them
high end performance suspension optimized for street use
United by our Swedish roots and a passion for perfection, together with Polestar, we are bringing advanced suspension technology to the electric vehicle market. See how we're shaping the future of driving with the Öhlins Dual Flow Valve (DFV) dampers for Polestar 2.
I can't imagine springs are so expensive you can't just fix the fucking dive on a camry
Or the fact that the wrangler rides like it's on moonboots
well springs and damper design, making dampers that are good with the weights of like SUV's is expensive
you buy some bilsteins for an old sports car? its like at most 1500 bucks for a really aggressive strut/shock setup
buy them for an SUV? its like double to triple
also SUV's are more than likely running a truck setup lmao
Mercedes/BMW dont because they know who their buyers are
there is a reason why the BWM X5 has always sold so well in the US
BMW has even done a good job making the X5 not be bloated
I mean its really heavy but
other SUV's have gained like 500+ pounds
Just make em heavier for no reason 👍
It's not like there's better safety systems in that weight
Only in the case where you just run over the other person in your personal tank
nah, the extra weight and the fact that the crash structures are much larger helps
Instead of both people being injured, the other person dies instead
the only reason the X5 hasnt gained so much weight is because BMW just swapped most of the body with Aluminum
its not entirely aluminum like a range rover but it is almost entirely
and then there is the use of really high end alloys becoming more frequent as costs balloon
some cars even have inconel in them which is wild
and inconel is the huge trend rn for aftermarket exhausts
Wasn't it always? It's high temp stainless
I remember seeing inconel on exhaust systems like a decade back at least
Lmao, fisker bankrupt again
Normal fisker things
Yuh, idk why but it’s come back cause people realized it’s just better than the titanium setups
At least inconel piping is not as expensive as it once was
It’s annoying to machine and depending on the alloy it’s super easy to weld or not easy to weld
Kind of a goofy material
I saw some inconel headers for an older Ferrari go for a few grand 😵💫
It's my favorite as a user but I wouldnt want to machine it lmao
It's like when I make specs for stuff out of 440 steel at work, you can hear the machinist groaning at how many bits they're going to break trying to make my part
yes
titanium tries to weld to stuff that causes friction
only reason that friction fold knives that are of fairly good quality almost always use titanium alloy
I mean, I fucking hate 6061 because of how it sticks to goddamn everything when you machine it
Ah, you set the spindle speed too high? Moved the end mill too fast? Enjoy your aluminum welded steel bit fucker
3060 my beloved
making suspension components that can handle aggressive geometry tuning without disintegrating after 25,000 miles on a 5000lb car lol
saw this as I was scrolling through a search on slickdeals
Meta Quest 3 $425-$553 - Target with Wedding or Baby Registry 15% off coupon.
buying a VR headset after having a kid or getting married seems like one of the ... oddest choices...
Escaping the prison that you built for yourself
^
If getting married or having a baby is a prison then don't do it?
woah woah, you cant be bringing logical answers to problems in life
the fuck
do they have THAT much leftover stock?
I'm confused, so I don't need to bring USB and install windows again if I want to factory reset?
I hate these stupid painkillers, they make me even less focused than usual
I've been struggling with this Powershell script for hours
Is Lexar considered a good SSD
Like it was said that FF16 PC port needs something like that
I have zero experience with Lexar, might wanna poke around for reviews of the SSD you plan to get
though I will say "fuck Samsung"
Hi guys, living in korea, flying to states in august due to academic reasons. Is it idiotic to try to bring my pc to the states with my pc inside my luggage? I have a mid tower w 13700k and 3070 and staying until either december or all the way till next summer, should i just look into getting a gaming laptop that doesnt look like an alien spaceship?
airport workers can and will throw this thing around like its a basketball so consider that
i dont think they will let you unless its a tiny PC that fits handluggage
doubt you can pull that off tbh
what some people do is put the case into the main luggage and pad it really really well in a sturdy coffer and take the parts individually with them
Someone in r/pcmr just told me they did it bc its actually perfectly fine to bring a whole ass pc in a luggage and took it onboard(…)
yeah ummmmmmmm
any decent gaming laptops that doesnt scream GAMER
depends on your budget but it aint gonna be cheap
i can do 1500
also keep in mind that the US uses 120V not 220 and not every PSU can just adjust to that, so if yours doesnt, you may have to buy a new one there
oh yeah im aware
not sure if you can really get a laptop that matches your old PCs performance though with that budget
most at that pricepoint probably have 4060s
Just something that can run dawntrail without any issues
oh yeah then no problem
Im willing to kick my graphics down
I do need reshade though for color purposes lmao
just
- usable in uni lectures
- actually livable battery life when not gaming (not like its not gonna be plugged in when im playing ff)
- 120 fps in instances
- doesnt scream THIS IS A GAMER LAPTOP AND HAS 200 EDGE BULK ANGLE SHIT
Is all i wish for
hmm do you want to buy it now or when you arrive in the US?
Eh
I could do either
just look for us options i can try to find ones in kr
Tysm btw
depending on your local availability you could probably get something with a 4070 even
i just randomly browsed a german website but this should be like 1400USD
for battery life etc, you wont get around checking all sorts of online reviews for specific models
Tyty
one thing I advise you tho
while you are in the US
its a good opportunity to get cheaper parts for your home pc
since SEA prices suck
but US prices are good
not sure if that really applies to korea
@deep sapphire @dire viper
real
man, german PC forums are so exhausting sometimes, because you really get people who try to defend a ryzen 7500F + 7800xt with slow SSD, mediocre cooling, overpriced case and low end board being priced at 1500$
i say thats bad value and get people in my DMs being angry about it like wtf?
everything is a good deal if you take away context
also speaking of AMD, new processors coming out for AM4???
this shit wild
I'm intrinsically opposed to pre-made pcs after seeing my og compaq go up in flames from garbo psu selection
I hope the 5800XT is a good processor (if it becomes real)
cause that would be my upgrade
They're upset that you're exposing their scam I guess
You mean you don't love every pre-built using high quality psu brands like great wall, or some 20 dollar 500w
It really makes me sad because trying to explain why pre-built pcs suck to someone who has no idea is the worst
lmao
my BMW is at a specialty shop and the guy at the counter said that explaining OE vs OEM is very hard
cause people dont understand that the BMW logo on the part adds another 100 dollars and the one where they grind off the BMW logo costs way less
its like any slightly weird concept ig?
like how EVGA sells mostly rebranded PSU's
I might have an EVGA PSU but its actually a seasonic PSU
LMAO
ohh yea @dire viper a friend of mine wants to get a late 90s/early 00s Z3... any... thoughts? I suggested even one in the best shape would probably be fussy lol. Especially as their only car.
the Z3 is basically a Miata
the Z4 would be a better choice imo
ya I did suggest a miata
newer car plus it has more power than a miata
they just want a small cheap convertible
so its actually rather quick
yuh if they are on a budget maybe a Z3
but for those prices a Miata would be a choice
and the reliability of a miata is obviously pretty high
Euro car vs Japanese car
Euro car has more expensive parts plus a higher end aftermarket (more expensive)
also ig its the use case
yea, ultimately he'll probably buy a used corolla or something as he should
i think a miata would be a pretty good bet for getting something he likes while having what he needs
if they are running Angeles Crest Highway I would want something that I know 100% is gonna be reliable
cause its a service dead zone lmao
nah dude's just using it as their daily
miata is super lightweight so the low power doesnt matter as much
means it does wanna go in first
also he's like 6'4 lol
consider, driving stick in Cali
but skinny af
yea if your above 6 foot its gonna be a hard choice
which was WHY i thought miata right away hahahaha
the Z4 I know fits up to 6'3
all the guys I know that drive miatas are tall
the 2 women I know are small though
also one of my work friends traded in his mustang for a rav4 prime 😦
i feel bad for him lol. The mustang had the 4cyl ecoboost and had issues
60k miles in and engine #2 was starting to act funny and he thought the auto transmission might be going too
yea the auto's go
honestly its hard to recommend any sports car
they all have quirks
tbh I still think the first gen (987) Cayman S is just. the best lower end sports car you can get
frunk and trunk
i think the mistake he made was not buying a 5.0 mustang lol
very cozy
or at least a v6 one
one of the best manuals ever put in a car
a v8 camaro as well
only issue is how expensive it is to maintain
or a v6/v8 challenger, either one would last
like yea they might not last forever, but certainly 60k miles in 4 years with nothing but oil changes would be a totally reasonable ask from any of those cars
ford, wtf?
how come the 6.2L in the Camaro is reliable but the 6.2L in the Silverado has constant issues with lifters collapsing

oh I can take a guess
aside from maybe they have variable displacement stuff? but more likely because of gearing and weight
are the transmissions different as well?
I also wonder if like, they use stiffer springs that require higher oil pressure and truck owners tend to idle a lot
also probably how the drivers drive
thats what killed a lot of hemis
lifters collapsed because people idled too much in them
hahaha
mmm suddenly i miss my old 300, it was a workhorse. it did at least a couple road trips where the engine ran >24hrs
never had an issue with that car aside from the alternator getting fried hahaha
also seriously i expect a v8 camaro owner would take better care of their car than a silverado owner
especially since a lot of silverados are company owned
also iirc ZL1 camaro's are still pretty pricy
then again, your average v8 challenger/charger owner doesn't 😄
as the V8 craze is now a thing again
i wonder how bad the insurance is on a v8 challenger
so bad
Had an issue causing me grief for the last week. Finally figured out the solution, and of course it was two very stupid things
the hard part is predicting what people would want then
in fact, real hard with the challenger because your garden variety upper middle class person that would blow $150k on a 50 year old 'classic' can't stand em
Was getting a static mime type error I couldn't resolve, then I finally figured out the scripts were in bin/appserver/static instead of appserver/static ...
somehow all the non rust proofed cars have lasted longer than all of the modern rust proofed cars
Then the rendering on the page still wasn't fully working and after another 2hrs of troubleshooting I realized the JS was the old version
mfw ive seen beetles sitting in garages for 50 years in better condition than a 10 year old chrysler that has barely been driven
nah E36 M3's already passed
1 M's have always been expensive
We switched from using the deployment server to the cluster deployer and it somehow got the old JS and passed that out to all the servers. So I changed the JS to the most updated version and everything was finally working again....
the classics now are the classics into the future still
so the idol cars going for a lot of money rn are going to be classics in 20 years
things like Supra's, E90 M3's
old supras?
even the mk4
that should be interesting
i guess it'll be like the s2k
S2K's just started going down in price but I think they will go up again yea
the s2k, a car that to this day is still risky to park in the street
lol
you park it in the street, come back to find it on blocks with the wheels/brakes/seats missing
so some fast & furious fanatic can put them in their ricer civic
I saw a S2K every block in LA
I do wonder
iirc it sold the most in cali
do people still rice civics?
I really haven't noticed it half as much as I used to
might be more of a bay area thing
the integra with the fart can and blue 'xenon' headlights
so if you arent in a super low end area you wont see them as much
I see civics all over West Valley City here but none at all where I live
or purple 💜
I see PI Chargers where I live lol
hahha
cause its the only way to get an AWD V8 charger
ya know
the CHP briefly used those
but almost no PD here ever bought them
I know one that had a few, I'm pretty sure they quickly replaced them with explorers
cops here have asteadfast love affair with the blue oval
buy a Camaro
maybe they get more paid overtime when their ecoboost explodes
yeah
2012 M5 is like 25k, ZL1 is like 40
man
and the M5 is almost as powerful, 20 less hp but 80 less ft lbs
i hate the name 'ecoboost'
but we both know why that M5 hasnt held its value

the V8 pre 2014 had reliability issues but they solved them
so 2014 MY and later has the upgraded internals
those are still about 25~30k
yuh the M5 only weighs 100lbs more than the Camaro too wtf
America's lightest car
hank
why is the Camaro in small SUV weight territory
the camaro weighs as much as a Mazda CX-9

so does the M5 but gahdamn
This is a bit random and idk if this is the right channel but
do you guys think ill be able to run and play ffxiv and dawntrail with the new graphics and stuff, if i have a i7 3770K? the min requirement is a 17 7700 i think but unfortunately i wont be able to upgrade for some time bc compatibility issues.
the rest of my build is fine and meets the reqs
how is it now?
i'd wait till the dt benchmark comes out and try it there
omg i totally forgot about the benchmark
right now it runs pretty flawlessly on high settings
the game new min specs are still like 6-10 years old
I wouldn't sweat tbh
okay cool. thank you. im probably gonna wait til the benchmark to preorder just in case, but i also think it will be fine some how.
what are the advantages of a mac/apple laptop as a workstation
The ecosystem
But otherwise nothing really
There is some convenience in the interconnectivity between certain products apple has but otherwise it’s just very expensive because it can be lmao
oh boy this really depends on what you're doing and, if you're using it to work at a company, how good the company's IT department is
like at my company there really isn't mac tech support, but the it/security people that handle them are way more experienced than the ones that do windows things
to me as a software dev, I hate using windows for dev work, and linux on a laptop can be annoying at times
Everything I’ve heard about business level mac stuff is that you have to be very on your toes
(but at the same time, better!)
macs are reliable af and you don't have to say, fuck with the window manager or worry about a kernel update breaking something
but developing linux software on a mac is kinda eh. and docker on a mac sucks.
docker on windows also sucks and WSL isn't that great (even if it is sooooo much better than not having WSL)
also at my company and every other company i've flirted with working for, using windows means using a dell

and if you think 'enterprise grade' dell is better. NO
it is not
that's just your company paying $4000 for the privilege to own a precision 'workstation' laptop 😄
i think the 'ecosystem' thing is as much a downside as a plus. honestly it's a real downside
The only good thing about enterprise Dell is how cheap it becomes used
if all the wonderful 'ecosystem' things were actually open source standards and got solid mac/windows/linux/android support, life would be amazing
sure but I still think they really went downhill
last i checked precision towers use the same janky ass motherboard that alienware uses lol
Yuh
(alienware towers and precision towers have been cousins for a looong time now)
to be fair, one of my dev machines was a precision tower running redhat and I loved that thing
A friend of mine buys the Dell stuff from corporate auctions and recycled them cause you can get some pretty beefy Intel processors and some productivity GPU’s for way way cheap
it had decent kernel support and was speedy
but the thermal system lagged so it would overheat for a split second every time I threw a load on it hahah
to be fair, a bargain basement precision tower with a geforce card tossed in has always been the best low end gaming deal
yuh
Gordon Bombay proves it takes a real scumbag to teach kids hockey.
From The Mighty Ducks.
wow that was fast
i wonder if they made a legit agreement with apple or just bought a few for hype and to get people to share the link like I did HAahhaha
you've heard of glass breaking from falling on the floor but what about glass breaking from falling on one's head?
Im not purchasing this machine at all, but isn't this extremely overpriced?
I scrolled through the EB games site cause I was looking to get a controller and I kind of lost my shit when I found this lmfao
There's no shot thats worth 4 grand AUD
For reference thats about 2900 USD
The most expensive part in all of that would be the GPU and in AUD a 4070ti is about 1100-1300
So where the fuck is the other 3 grand coming from
The cpu is only about 4-500 AUD
Yeah no fucking shot. ITs like they tacked on like 2 grand for labour lmfao
thats incredibly overpriced wtf
Its insanely overpriced
Like i'm trying to figure out how they're justifying it other than like
I dunno, they priced it like the 4070ti just came out then tacked on an additional like
150%
but even then it shouldnt be that much
for that money you can build a PC with DDR4 RAM, an i13900 and an RTX 4090
I have parts coming that are better than that PC and I only spent like
2600 I think
AUD
like that is just grossly overpriced
for that kind of money I will build you a new PC
For that kind of money you better toss in a back massage and a PS5 Pro
oh yeah I would like to point out that since the RAM is 3200 MHz it is most likely DDR3
lmao ddr3
I was about to say theres no way in hell thats ddr3
DDR4, DDR3 is like 1600mhz
and the 12700k doesnt support DDR3 either
Anyone here using DDR5 now?
ricotez does iirc
Curious to know noticeable it is from DDR4
yeah I use DDR5
well honestly my old PC was fast but my new PC blows it out of the water
I definitely noticed the difference
Im goin intel this time yeah
the 14900k gets wrecked by the 5800x3d without ddr5 ram essentially, its reliant on it to be better
but it's not like you need it if your current PC is also fast
so intel without ddr5 is heavily hamstrung
however I like to play games that are RAM hungry like modded Minecraft or modded Cities: Skylines and it's very useful for that
I got a good deal on a 14700k. I could have gone AMD and got better performance, but like a 14700 is going to completely decimate what I was on before anyway
And I do dabble in more than just gaming so
I have a 13700kf right now, it's great
so on intel I always heavily recommend ddr5, just makes the cpu a lot better
And Im goin from a 2070 super to a 4070ti super
yeah I got ddr5
I'll put it all together tomorrow after work so I guess I'll have hands on experience then
Then I gotta sell my old parts
Should get a couple hundred AUD for the parts i'm getting rid of
Put it towards a new monitor I think
ya Ive been giving my old pcs to my stepdad so he can play with his friends
anyway for the price of that PC you can easily get one with 32GB of DDR5 RAM at 6000 MHz, an i13/14700/900, and an RTX 4090, and still have plenty of room in your budget for a good mobo, some good SSDs, and a nice case and powerful enough PSU to power it all

like that price is just criminal
Yeah it fucking baffles me
sue them for scamming ppl /s
it feels designed to trap people with a lot of money but no idea what a top of the line gaming PC contains
Its from EB Games so like that doesnt shock me
They're not really a place you go for PC stuff
The system seems to be from uh
these guys
who I've never heard of in my life
like, for that price, you can get all what I described AND a nice 4K or ultrawide screen
and here I thought paying 1000euro for my 4080super was too much
System integrators charge a hefty amount for no real reason here apparently lmfao
meanwhile mom and pop pc repair shop: give me 50-100 for putting together the PC
Also It makes my head spin that a 4070ti is still about 1200 AUD here
more than a PS5 for just the fucking GPU
ok seriously i know your currency is bad and stuff, but
non sale price is 2100AUD, which is like 1350USD
750 here
the 4070ti is much stronger than the ps5 by itself but nvidia has been jacking up prices lately
Oh, yeah I know its way more powerful than whats in the PS5 but Nvidia is definitely pulling an Apple
Nvidia tax is grueling
its why Intel's cards are so attractive
they price them much lower
mhm
consoles now have to use upscaling tech, like imagine upscaling from like 720p or 960p or sth to 1440p or more for 30-60fps, mainly because DX12 is still new, but new GPUs push through and gives you good framerate at native, usually around 100 or more if the dev did not fuck up optimization too badly
so the scaling is there compared to a console, but the price is still insane
Hell I wonder if I could strap my PC to my Oled TV and run games at 4k on a 4070ti
ok wait is this website even real? are we sure it really isnt just a scam?
because even that piece of crap i showed above for 1000$ is "expected to last 3-4 years" on their website
and their section for the game performance is just empty on all of them
I mean they sell their PCs on EB Games website so like
you definitely can for sure
they're pulling these systems from somewhere
games will run well but some 4K textures might strain the vram on some games
Im considering it just for the heck of it
but I kind of like having my TV separate from my PC so like
I might just grab a 1440p IPS monitor
out of their ass it seems
Their gold plated, diamond encrusted ass
how far away is it from the pc?
1440p is definitely good nowdays
