#

What's the AMD equivalent of an i7 10000?

lost python
#

that depends on what model you mean exactly

modest moss
#

10700 you mean I guess?

frozen bolt
#

I suppose.

#

No model in general, I guess the cheapest one.

modest moss
#

maybe 3800x? idk

lost python
#

the cheapest 10k series cpu is the 10100F which is like.. uh..

modest moss
#

there's not exactly a like for like

he said i7 though

lost python
#

ah right i7

modest moss
#

it's a weird question, they're old

lost python
#

yeah 10700F is like the cheapest which averaged at like 300€ at its time
so comparable to the 3800x

It has to do with how many write cycles each block has gone through. If you wrote to them and the games don't update very often, you could have a lot of data written but if each block only got overwritten 70x and they can handle 300 lets say, it's fine. But if it was the same 1gb overwritten everyday for 3 years, you would be close to 1000x writes to a block and trash the drive

The Gameboy Color had an 8-bit CPU clocked at 8 MHz with 32 KB of RAM. It rendered at 144p. The original Gameboy had half the clock speed and 1/4 the RAM.

#

Game Boy had 8KB of RAM? VRAM I assume they were talking about? Still, whew...

#

Interestingly, the NES was 1.79mhz 2KB RAM 8bit rendering at 240p. The Game Boy was 4mhz 8KB RAM rendering at 144p. But I guess that isn't the whole story bc the later games for NES would "cheat" by including extra memory on the cartridges. IE: SMB3 wouldn't have been possible on purely stock NES capabilities.

dull garnet

it does in the uk

modest moss

when you add a power supply and a case etc it's getting semi expensive

A dev board with those features and size for 80$ is kinda steal

dull garnet

I just wonder if the active cooler will fit in the official case, otherwise i'll wait for a flirc case like my pi 4

The new pi case has the active cooler built in

frozen bolt
sly elk
#

@frozen bolt it depends on your budget, but if your board can handle a 3600x it can probably handle a 5800x3d, and that's basically the endgame gaming cpu for that platform.

#

it's real good, too. I have seen at least one person go from 5800x3d -> 7800x3d and see no practical difference in gaming performance

frozen bolt
#

They look similar in price too.

sly elk
#

yea that's why people recommend 7800x3ds for new amd builds lol

but also consider if you'll actually see a performance jump from a 3600x to a 5800x3d lol

We will soon begin rolling out changes to Reddit's User settings. It is getting a refresh that includes changes to ad personalization, privacy preferences, and location settings.

As part of these changes, we are retiring a setting that you have previously turned on that limited how we used your activity from the Reddit platform to personalize ads. We have replaced the setting with a new option to select categories of ads that you may not wish to see.

More details are available in our announcement and help center.

These changes are rolling out starting today and you may see the changes over the next few days.

real edge

real edge

royal forge
#

ye.

#

im waiting for reddit to push for new reddit

dull garnet
real edge
#

yup

dull garnet
#

I guess they're basically tied plus the 5800x3d has extra cores plus large cache for software that can take advantage

real edge
#

as for the 7700x and above it depends on a per game basis, the 7800x3d is the best because it combines the IPC increase with the fat 3d cache, but for non 3dcache chips there are cases where the 5800x3d pulls ahead because of the cache

#

or similar perf because of the cache

dull garnet
#

Either way a 5800X3D is much nicer than a 3600 in terms of frame rates. If you're at 60Hz it will probably be less of an upgrade, definitely helps with ff14 and an unlocked frame rate though

lost python
#

why the hell are you looking at a CPU benchmark that uses a 3080

#

ofc its clear where the bottleneck lies

real edge
# dull garnet Either way a 5800X3D is much nicer than a 3600 in terms of frame rates. If you'r...

nobody normal uses 60hz on a desktop nowdays if they have a gaming CPU unless its a second monitor for browsing only or discord or sth

your benchmark has a 3080 which is a bottleneck when testing high tier CPUs like those

before that you tell some other person that the 7600 is faster than the 5800x3d which can be true in some games but not true in others, cause it depends on vcache utilization until we reach the 7800x3d and such

#

I somewhat dislike misinformation so try and do some research cause when we advise people on what to buy we have to ensure that we are correct

dull garnet
#

Damn, I got told off

#

Oh I was thinking of 7600X, my bad

#

Looking at benches with a 4090 that one is faster most of the time

compact pine
#

I was tempted to stay with and from my 7 3700x to the 7800x3d but price wise it made more sense to get the i7 13700k for similiar cpu pricing. With more cores/ slight better performance I assume.Mind you that' forced a MOBO and ram upgrade as well. I have a 3070ti and the 3700x was bottlenecking hard in some games

lost python
#

even then the 7600x isnt always faster

but then I got the CL30 ram and it went up to 120

sly elk
#

O_o

#

that's a huge jump lol

deep sapphire
#

right

sly elk
#

i forgot, did you just load the xmp config or did you tweak your voltage and stuff?

deep sapphire
#

then I tried to enter them manually

#

still didnt work

#

figured maybe my bios was out of date which it was so I tried that

#

still didnt work

#

then I read reviews online

#

tons of people on both AMD and intel saying the same shit

#

so I got 32GB of CL30 6000 ram

#

loaded up XMP profile

#

no problems booted up instantly

sly elk
#

I don't use my macbook that often, but when I do it makes me wanna buy a studio display lol. That nice crisp retina screen and the shiny finish. Makes it soooo nice to look at.

cold yacht
#

The pro version is hella nice

#

Down side it’s $5k lmao

sly elk
#

lol they're both pretty sweet

#

although it's hilarious that it costs almost the same as the 27" 5k imac (that had practically the same screen)

#

I think the imac was $1799 and the screen is $1599

#

to be fair, the hardware the iMac included wasn't really worth much hahahaha

#

one thing that bugs me is I'd want the model with the adjustable height stand

#

and I feel like the 27" looks goofy with it, because I'm pretty sure that the stand is the same "$1000 stand" except it doesn't have the magnetic head the XDR stand does - so it looks a little mismatched for size

sly elk
#

#

also grr my keyboard is too fancy to get into bios setup lol

hehe I ran a bios update

#

let's see if enabling expo works now

#

I found an amusing motherboard setting where you can tell it to retry the memory test x times before giving up

#

ahhh this really gets old fast

#

after like 5 restarts it finally booted into windows

#

i wonder what the ram settings are

#

seems it actually worked

#

i'm actually not surprised though, the expo profile tells it to use friggin 1.4v on the memory lol 😄

#

and 1.3v vsoc

#

last time I did this I was running like 1.2v memory and 1.2v vsoc lol 😄

#

it worked fine but wouldn't always boot >>

odd sand
#

Oh yeah the new cordless fans everyone keeps getting sued over right now heh

sly elk
#

?

odd sand
#

I think they're suing others now as well bc Corsair does a similar cordless design

sly elk
#

also wow that latest firmware update that came out last month for my motherboard seems to have totally fixed memory overclocking stability

#

4x16gb ddr6000 cl30 seems happy now lol

odd sand
#

It is rather curious they all come out with a similar tech advanced at the same time. So I wonder if Lian Li actually invented it, or if some 3rd party actually invented the process and Lian Li is merely suing over the specific implementation

sly elk
#

TIL phanteks is from the netherlands

potent arrow
#

God it's the aio pump situation all over again

sly elk
#

idk. Making fans that lock together is a bit more novel than making a waterblock+waterpump combo

#

sadly after seeing what i've seen, I wouldn't buy the lian-li fans because they seem to like burning out LEDs? lol

odd sand
#

But like Corsair just advertised their new interlocking fan/low cabling solution recently as well.

potent arrow
#

I only really use unify fans for clients

#

No issue for like the last two or three years

sly elk
#

unify fans?

#

that said, haven't had any issue with those strimer cables

but i also don't run them at full bright white which will burn them out lol

odd sand
#

there is one vaguely USB-C looking cable that connects the triple fan block to the controller box on the back of the case.

sly elk
odd sand
#

I bought the H150i when I got the 13900k and the price was kinda outrageous, but that was during covid so kinda everything was

#

I did manage to find a sale+rebate that knocked it down to like $140 from $200 tho

wise jay
sly elk
#

yea

wise jay
#

ya Ive seen nothing but bad stuff about lianli fans. They cost alot and burn out way too easily. Ive yet to have a fan burn out and Id be pissed if something cost the same or more than a noctua fan and burned out

sly elk
#

i never had an rgb fan of any brand burn out on me, but I did have a corsair h115i platinum AIO where some of the RGB LEDs in the pump head burned out after 3 years

#

I asked for a warranty replacement in year 4. Had to pay like $40 for shipping because they made me send it from california to georgia ....
and then they gave me a newer, but cheaper model without rgb fans 😦

wise jay
#

rip

sly elk
#

oh well, used it in my 2nd build lol

#

i had already replaced it with an h150i elite capellix + LCD hehehe

#

as much as I enjoy that, I'd never recommend it to anyone because it's such a waste of money

wise jay
#

ya this current build is the first one that I actually care about rgb somewhat

sly elk
#

unless they buy it because they want it!

wise jay
#

I mean I was trying to get an lcd screen on my cooler just because i could but it was decent bit more than what I got so I passed on it

#

I went with a Deepcool LT720 for this build. $111

#

I think it was like triple that for any of the decent lcd coolers

sly elk
#

those are cool

#

yea pretty much

#

i think I paid 250 for my aio and then $95 for the screen

wise jay
#

Like 200. Oh fuck yeah I would easily jump on that

#

300+ is a pass

sly elk
#

do I regret it? nah 😄

ya my gpu doesnt hit orange quite right so i have it set to all purple most of the time

sly elk

second you have one of my favorite GPUs lol

#

it's like that and the zotac

#

third the fans look nice

#

you really need to get some nicer power cables though

wise jay
#

Those pictures are like 2 seconds apart and my shitty phone camera cant keep the color right.

sly elk
#

lol

#

gg

wise jay
#

its the same color in both pictures

#

the tinted lianli case is super nice. My friend has an all white build with the regular glass and its like a clean room. The lights in mine feel so tasteful

sly elk
#

but yea, it's nice to do an 'rgb matters' build at least once hahaha

wise jay
#

ya and I said previously i saved a good bit cheaping out on pccooler brand fans because they tested well

sly elk
#

i originally built my current setup with 2x16 g-skill rgb and sent it back to get 4x16 corsair vengeance rgb because..... I really didn't like how the 2 sticks of g-skill looked haha

wise jay
#

ya I got 2 32 GB for a good price so I went with that

sly elk
#

2x32, especially when ddr5 is concerned, is appropriate lol

#

as I mentioned earlier, 4x ddr5 tends to have OC stability issues

#

but heyy works now

wise jay
#

ya and I think I have it clocked at 5800 right now because 6000-6400 was causing alot of unnecessary instability

#

I went with the cooler master vertical bracket and theres almost 0 sag on my card which is nice. My friend got the lianli kit and there is very noticeable sag

#

I highly recommend that kit personally. Its much larger than the lian li one and its quite clear from just looking at it that it would support it better

#

I dread needing to remove the card though. Getting the ribbon cable into the motherboard was such a bitch.

sly elk
#

hehe

#

my case has a little bracket thingy for holding GPUs

#

i think vertical mounting is better though in terms of eliminating sag

wise jay
#

part of it was for style and the temps on the O11 case showed it helps from many people testing it

#

for the cost of the build I wasnt going to sweat 60 dollars for the kit when it has a functional purpose along with showing me those sexy chevrons

sly elk
#

lol

#

dude shows adjusting the height on the samsung and the power cable falls off while adjusting

#

ahh it's so frivolous but this is kinda how/why the other costs more

lol falls off. Bro that shit shot off lmao

sly elk

oh damn it did

#

wait was it even connected in the first place

#

it wasn't

i betr it fell off when he was turning it around

#

but that's such a common problem with height adjustable displays that I still buy it hahahaha

my current monitor came with a nice locking dvi cable and the squeezing unlock always makes me worry Im going to mess up the female connection when i move stuff around

They do make displayport cables without thqt locking plug

New to PC building, but can someone explain the “scared/nervous to update bios” memes

#

Like this one for example

inland mauve
#

well the BIOS is one of the most fundamental components of a motherboard

#

if something goes wrong with it, then the computer can't boot

#

and you can't even access the BIOS itself anymore if you're unlucky

#

you can easily brick an entire motherboard if you fuck up the BIOS

drifting knot
inland mauve
#

but unless the BIOS has some recovery functionality, you're screwed, you can't just start over

drifting knot
#

Ah

#

Thanks for the insight

inland mauve
#

some modern BIOSes have a second version of their software stored in read-only format that they can recover from if the main software no longer works

modest moss
#

Most boards now tend to have a dual bios so it's less of an issue

#

Back in the day it was legit scary

cant talk about other regions but i rarely see a posting up for longer than a few days

dull garnet
#

people are like rabid dogs

#

lol

lost python
#

especially for iphones

dull garnet
#

yep

odd sand
#

I can't stand iOS and everyone and their mother has a Samsung Galaxy so I'm kinda meh on them as well

#

So I just buy a phone with the expectation I hold onto it until I run it into the ground or I gift it to relatives kids

lost python
#

id like samsung more if it didnt come preloaded with apps you cant remove

umbral moss
#

I don't dislike ios but apple fucked me over like 12 years ago so I haven't bought an apple product since pogianger

dull garnet
#

i've owned enough samsung to never buy one again

odd sand
#

I just find iOS so restrictive and navigating the OS is awkward and obtuse

#

It's like bumper lanes at bowling

lost python
#

they have great performance though, even after apple locks down clockrates because the phones are overheating

dull garnet
#

probably just stick iphone or pixel going forward. i don't really use anything that isn't on either of the stores on my phone anyway

odd sand
#

I don't play many games so I've never had an issue with that before the battery is already going as well

#

Like mine is 4yo and still plays Star Rail fine

umbral moss
#

my pixel 6 chugs if there's enough dot procs in star rail

#

and doesn't enjoy the same in MLA

dull garnet
#

i don't play games on my phone lol

lost python
#

i just dont like pixels because i dont trust google enough with anything

#

knowing my luck, the day i get a pixel is probably the day google announces they shut down their phone production

umbral moss
#

that'll be the pixel 8 in all likelihood lmao

#

the problem is that LG pulled out of mobile and windows phone died (RIP superior phone OS sad )

lost python
#

and everyone else is still trying so hard to be a bigboy and sell an overpriced phone without having anything that is remotely worth that sum

dull garnet
#

a bit like AMD graphics cards

umbral moss
#

the pixel 8 definitely isn't worth nine hundred ninety nine US dollars

lost python
umbral moss
#

just because you price it as a premium product doesn't mean it is a premium product

dull garnet
#

i didn't think the pro was worth the premium when i was buying the 6

#

you get an extra camera and a slightly nicer screen? meh

sly elk
#

sometimes**

lost python
#

sucks that apple will never be an option for me, because i do not want to get a smaller phone but the next best option is the pro max and its 1500€+ lmao

sly elk
#

so far the best 'resale' I've seen is with samsungs where they give you a fat discount for trading in

#

it's pretty damn funny

dull garnet
#

i'll probably get an a model next time, i'd like a smaller handset

sly elk
#

Craigslist: I'll give you $350
Samsung: Upgrade your shitty S23 to the new S24 for only $100!

#

but samsungs really aren't worth it that first time unless you buy like 6 months in when they're practically worthless

#

as it stands, iphones have awful trade in deals. AWFUL. They're all of the "send us your last gen phone and we'll give you 800 off in 36 monthly credits if you have the most expensive plan we sell!"

#

iirc you need to pay t-mobile like $90 a month to qualify for that deal this time ("Go5G plan")

sly elk
dull garnet
#

oh yeah, then what's this

#

/s

umbral moss
#

I just want to be able to play video games with a long battery life

sly elk
umbral moss
#

using my phone to star rail for an hour on the train knocks off 50% of the battery on my pixel

sly elk
#

OnePlus is the Tesla of android phones

umbral moss
#

it's so fuckin brutal watching the battery die in real time

#

1% per minute with the brightness pulled down

sly elk
dull garnet
#

do any phones do well under a gaming load for any kind of real duration

umbral moss
#

I mean, if the iphone 15 can play fuckin RE4 remake I imagine it can handle star rail for two hours lmao

dull garnet
#

that has nothing to do with battery life

sly elk
#

I thought it was hilarious when the fold was announced and people in the pixel subreddit were like

dull garnet
sly elk
#

pixel build quality on a folding phone?!

dull garnet
#

making a folding phone has to be like a shareholder expectation thing

#

who is buying these

sly elk
#

and that's with someone who doesn't usually break their phone

#

not someone who manages to smash their iphone even when carrying it in one of those giant hideous otterbox cases

#

i've already seen forum/reddit posts from people who bought a flip/fold that have a habit of breaking phones

#

their shit didn't even last a week lol

#

problem is if you drop a folding phone on the corners where the hinge is, it'll basically break the hinge

dull garnet
#

No doubt. It just feels like premature tech to me even if well kept and Samsung are already on gen 4 lol

modest moss
#

@dull garnet you were right

sly elk
#

and few cases protect the hinge well - the ones that do tend to also stress it lol

#

yea plus there's different ways of supporting the screen when closed

modest moss
#

that £23 netbook was doa so I sent it back, they then restocked and I bought another for £20 and that arrived doa too

sly elk
#

like samsung and a few others go with the teardrop fold

#

but soem others just slam the thing 180 degrees shut lol

dull garnet
sly elk
#

also folding screens come with a crease ElezenInLove

modest moss
#

you told me not to bother

sly elk
#

which only disappears if you're looking straight at the phone!

dull garnet
#

Even if it worked you will wish you hadn't bothered

odd sand
#

Probably restocked the same device and sent it back to you haha

sly elk
#

the thing I love about phones right now is you can spend <$200 on a motorola or something

#

and get 95% of an iPhone 15 Pro

#

I bet by now you even get wireless charging and nfc wallets and all that crap too

modest moss
#

it's not the same unit, the first had a swollen battery, but yeah they probably blindly sent out returns

sly elk
#

but marketing is a powerful drug xD

dull garnet
#

honestly the most intensive thing i do on my phone is discord or insta reels so i don't need much power

sly elk
#

that week between the iphone 15 launch and stores having them? made me want one real bad xD

#

but I'm glad I didn't waste my money

dull garnet
sly elk
#

as for folding phones, I think the $1800-ish MSRP is fucking insane lol

#

you could buy an iphone and an ipad pro

#

and have a far better experience

dull garnet
#

nvidia man would blush at that price

sly elk
#

you could buy whatever else. rog phone. oneplus. that sony 5g camera phone thingy...

dull garnet
#

rog phone seems like a good idea until you have to use it as a phone

sly elk
#

oh yeah you could spend $1800 on a gaming GPU to play cyberpunk once a week and then let it spend 95% of its time idling

#

hates the 4090

dull garnet
#

more like 99.99%

sly elk
#

if you spent $1800 on a 4090 you can't make the argument that anything is a waste of money 😄

#

I mean you can

#

but I'll still laugh at you 😄

dull garnet
#

i spent £580 on a 4070 paissaowo

sly elk
#

i mean i won't really laugh at you if it made you happy, I want you to be happy :3 and I'm not that kind of asshole

dull garnet
#

didn't feel good about it lol

sly elk
#

the msot frivolous waste of money I've done is anything related to sim racing

#

i bought a wheel, a wheel stand, a gpu for my old rig......

#

I used it twice

#

I really need to list that shit on craigslist

dull garnet
#

me spending £800 on a mba and barely using it the last 6 months

#

i feel like its worth hanging onto though, realistically it'll be perfect for any time i need it for the coming decade probably

real edge
#

580 pounds is quite a bit more than 550euro or dollars

#

idk about conversion rates

#

ohh wew

#

its 670euro

#

700$

#

yea thats quite a bit more

dull garnet
#

i might have been able to get a better deal but i wanted the founder edition

real edge
#

there is the asus dual OC that has an 8pin connector

dull garnet
#

yeah, it idles 10w more than the FE

real edge
#

where did you see that

cold yacht
#

Think I spent $600 on my 3070

dull garnet

#

I feel like I wasted money

the 4060ti fe review says the 4070 idles at 9watts
