first is actually england, second is UK/GB but that's just me being a picky local
I bet either would work fine anyway lol
I did tell him it might be too much
but he said it has always worked for him so its what he goes with
will just depend how thick he's doing the lines
ye
hes at your age shue and has worked on my pc ever since I got mine 15? 16? years ago
holy shit time flies
I've gone through... 4 CPUs? and 3 gpus since then
from a dual core i3 from the late 2000s, to a 4690k, to a 2700x to a 5800x3d
from an ati radeon 5850HD, to a 960 that I quickly ditched for a 1070
technically 2 gpus based on how long I've had the 960 for which was a few weeks'
so I've found that CPUs tend to age worse than GPUs for me
storage wise? I still have my first ssd I ever got, its now solely working only on windows, I've since moved my games to my NVME ssd and I have some old games on an HDD
the first ssd works perfectly fine but it is fairly old
I got it during the 4690k era
the diagnostics on it say that its perfectly fine but it has like 45k power on hours

AMD's 4800S Desktop Kit is a Chinese OEM-only PC board featuring the Xbox Series X APU paired with 16GB of GDDR6 memory. The onboard GPU is disabled, but there's enough PCIe bandwidth to attach a powerful graphics card. So how does the Series X CPU stack up against other desktop Ryzen processors? What kind of limits does it have when combined wi...
I bought two ssdd as my first. They were 240gb ocz arc 100s, one of the first Toshiba ocz things
They were really cheap but good enough lol

I am glad I have owned some PowerPC machines
ya but Ive owned an eMachine
Never obsolete
It was so bad. Worked well enough though. It was my first personal computer. I could run old wow on it
That shit BSOD'd so often. I had to reinstall windows every few months
but hey. As a cheap personal computer for a kid it was fantastic
Old wow could run on a potato
any good mmo back then could. Lots couldnt though
There were times our machines barely could
Back then potatoes were the peak personal computers
I remember when the first dual core CPU debuted
ya i definitely wouldnt have been able to join raids back then but I could do alot of the content
I remember when the Sims 2 came out and how nearly every woman I knew was complaining about the performance lol
Lmao
Once more I digging into laptops
I found my baseline choice but I am not certain if there are alternatives... Or better choices with an extra lil investment
It kinda needed a dedicated video card
Well round em up, Mlem
iirc when Maxis was working on The Sims 2, the servers burned down or got flooded or something late in development, and they had to rush to rebuild the game and get it out of the door
A 3050, 8gb Ddr4, 12th gen i5
I think that's a neat one
But 15k? That better not be USD
It MXN
Mexican pesos
Although I love the fear it causes, when people assume its USD
It 900 bucks laptop
Yeah
Forgot the exchange rate currently
But I know a peso is a lot less than a usd
I wouldn't wish a gaming laptop upon my worst enemy
I do plan to port my PC SSD of 500gb, (dunno if better to reinstall files on it or fine leaving it as, like Steam n FFXIV)
And also plan to buy another ram stick to make it 16
I have a cheap Lenovo with an external SSD for music purposes
Don’t actually game on it
But mobility when recording is useful
Current reasons for laptop
Ease of movement and able to settle anywhere with it
Internal battery cus I dunno enough about UPS, and this feels easier
And I don't need that much power, my most highest intensity game being...just FFXIV
And that's cus it's not well optimized
Is there not a consistent power source where you are or something
Just the neighborhood has random lights out moments
Cus
Why not
Once a month
Very windy, very hot, soso
Also lemme just say
At this price point, finding anything that isn't a 16 or 20 GTX series is weirdly hard
At this price point
speedy flexing that he knew women

So to ask
I got told that a laptop 3050, compared to desktops, are more equivalent to 2050
True?
Mainly looking at Dawntrail and wanting to match a laptop to it's specs
there is no 2050
techpowerup for a 3050 mobile shows a relative performance around the same as a desktop 1650 or rx 470
@dull garnet You went backwards in PC spec a few times there, did you have some blow up on your or something?
uh incompatibility with games i played, going periods having sold a pc, deciding to downgrade to what i "need"
I suppose the other wonder then is
How big is, for a laptop, an upgrade from 3050 to 3060
Cus from what I see, for me, that's a 33% price increase to get any laptop with a 3060
muuuch better
Where's the 50 mobile in that chart
50%
Eesh
I guess it would be worthy
Although 20k is a faaaair bit...but I can hold too
do Lenovo deliver to Mexico?
there was a reasonably priced 4060 laptop linked earlier
@proven oyster
I'm not super sure
But I do know shipping kinda makes it way harsh
For now I'm keeping mostly to Amazon
Also promos and codes basically are null for me
First they have to put the orange filter over it
More questions, more learning
So I now know I need to chase a 3060
But at that point... Should I try to see if I can get a lucky 4060?
Iunno the difference of power between the two
... specially since it sounds the 40 series have a weird nuance of watts to keep in mind?
The 4060 and 3060 are nearly identical in performance just the 4060 is more efficient
If you can get a better deal on the 3060 go that route
RX6700/6800XT
Aighty
Radeon mobile GPUs are almost non existent in gaming laptops though and if they are there they are paired with weird AMD SKUs
I still don’t understand AMDs CPU lineup in notebooks lmao
Fair
oih gfee sorry wrong channel
Isn't games just tech
all games are tech, but not all tech is games
I can’t read
since the codes are ded this might work also https://www.newegg.com/obsidian-black-acer-nitro-5-an515-46-r5xn-gaming/p/N82E16834360253

Also same
You can tell the woes
Also my brother got a new Laptop
And im so sticking an endwalker benchmark for a sense of it
An MSI GF63 Thin 11UC
RTX 3050, i5-11400H
I have a similar setup lenovo and it's fine for 14 (edit: gen 12 i5, not gen 11)
(just make sure it has 16gb ram via 2 sticks for dual channel)
(or 2 sticks same cap in general)
It do
Honestly the main driving push on what i want to get with this new laptop is
"I want this to last from 7.0 all the way to end of 8.0, maybe a lucky 9.0"

...With a shipping cost that literally makes it near what it was
x-x
But thank for options
np
okay now i feel just sites like newegg detest me
Right now i found out quite a wack thing. Checking out an Acer Nitro 5, with a GTX 4050
Acer Nitro 5 - 15.6" 144 Hz IPS - Intel Core i5 12th Gen 12500H (2.50GHz) - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 Laptop GPU - 16 GB DDR5 - 512 GB PCIe SSD - Windows 11 Home 64-bit - Gaming Laptop (AN515-58-56CH )
But... when i convert the site, into the Mexican site? What i get instead, is this:
Acer Nitro 5 - 15.6" 144 Hz IPS - AMD Ryzen 5 5000 Series 5600H (3.30GHz) - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU - 8 GB DDR4 - 512 GB PCIe SSD - Windows 10 Home 64-bit - Gaming Laptop (AN515-45-R0FN )
In fact, as i tested with a friend
These provide two different links... but for me, both show the latter in Mexican
And for them, in their Region... THey show the former ;D
F+cking sites intentionally preventing me access to the GOOD Stuff
Too much has never really been an issue
There's a noticeable improvement between the laptop 3060 and 4060 skus, actually
mostly bc the 4060 performs a lot better in the lower wattage ranges that most laptops restrict the gpus to
its kind of w/e on desktop, though
Didn’t benchmarks show like within margins for a vast majority of titles
for desktop
yes
but a 4060 and a 3060 operating within similar wattage caps will have the 4060 pulling ahead noticeably
that said
i dont think they have a budget for a 3060 laptop
Yeah
I generally do have time to access a 3060 though
The main gut feel is, i do think that i will likely wait for some sort of notable sale, which would give me leeway for it
Only woe is the fact that, bastards are negating me access to anything freshly new, alongside shipping costs being awful
Wait for a sale if your budget's tight, buy now if you need something new immediately
https://www.amazon.com/MSI-Thin-144Hz-Gaming-Laptop/dp/B0BT3CD75G i7-12650H + 4050 900 usd
This laptop became +300 bucks
With shipping alone
Since you're getting a laptop your options are unfortunately pretty restricted within your budget
Looking at amazon mx, I can't really find anything better than a 3050 laptop for 15k
Gaming laptops are a risky buy because if you can’t afford a higher end one you’ll end up getting something with piss poor build quality and being they thermal cycle hard they don’t last long
Yeah
20k is about the range for A 3060, if i recall?
25k in your country
pain peko
Would just consider an actual PC unless portability is 100% important to you
Pretty sure you can get a good system for cheap within your budget using new parts, and still have room to get a UPS
Even if you can find one with acceptable specs for the price you’ll pay for it with poor build quality where it starts failing after 1 year
I honestly just have zero clues on UPS
and if you are considering portability but don't need gaming powerr when you're on the go, just get a cheap lightweight laptop for that lol
I mean its only for gaming this PC
You should just build a desktop then
Or even buy one
You’ll get more value for your money and a system that will last much longer
Curiously checking Logical increments
A 15k laptop
or a 13k PC
Thats apparently the tier i am on to like, Match a 15k with the 3050 Ti Laptop
Ima tell you from experience MSI laptops are dog shit and you will be very unhappy with your purchase
I haven't even looked at a MSI laptop
Didn’t you post one above
The one i been eyeing mostly is Acer Nitro's line
Mostly me sassing the absurd shipping upcost
Oh
Fire it up then go full throttle faster and more effectively than ever with Acer's next evolution of its Nitro 5 gaming laptop. The Nitro 5 soars to new levels of performance for gamers and creators, courtesy of its 12th Gen Intel Core processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti graphics—powered by ...
This is the one i have an eye on right now
Which, with shipping, ends literally exactly the same price without the 20% discount
And it'd be a 3050 Ti, vs according to double checkings, a RX 6500-XT
...If i decided to buy a desktop prebuilt, what would be my choices?
With the target being Dawntrail's recommended specs, and including an UPS on it
it's really hard to say if you're outside of the US
Trust me, im as lost as you
also what do you need a UPS for?
i'm not saying you don't need one, but I'm curious what you need from it
An average of a monthly momentary electricity brownout
Like 1 minute short
And me just being
Exhausted of having that
oh ok
then a reasonably sized UPS should be fine
also, it's worth noting that comparing a laptop gpu to a desktop gpu of the same name, may not be apples to apples
even if the manufacturers insist it is
So i heard
And i am keeping that in mind with the comparisons
Also do give me like
An example of a "Reasonably sized UPS"
1000va or larger
As said, this is a literal breadth of tech that i have not an ounce of sense
the ones shaped like a small tower,, not the ones that have plugs on the top
I mean it really depends on the type of UPS (some legit ones have plugs on the top) but I meant something like this
This APC battery back up power supply offers guaranteed power and surge protection for wireless networks, computers, and other electronics in your home or business. Backup battery power supply is designed for use during outages and unsafe voltage fluctuations, and provides surge protector with ba...
thing is, those only really power your computer for like 10 minutes
that's why i was asking what you want out of a UPS
Thats honestly enough for me
because some places regularly have longer power outages lol
Sucks that apparently that same item
On the Mexican Amazon
is 6k pesos
In conversion, 360 ish bucks basically
eh you can shop around, it doesn't have to be that model
ahh ok, another thing to consider is the technology they use
some emulate AC power better than others
tbh it's frustrating nobody makes a PC power supply with some kinda built in UPS fallback option
it's asinine that you have to use an AC inverter lmao
This isn't convincing me to a Desktop PC ill admit
lol
I understand.
https://www.amazon.com.mx/dp/B00429N192
that should be ok

-goes to look at other parts-
A 4k UPS, mrh
Imagine if it was dollars
i see a zotac 4060 for $6052 if you're dead set on nvidia
I am not really
But i am mostly keeping a sharp eye on that Acer Nitro pricing
one of the reasons people here are so gung ho about building PCs is stuff like this
AMD Ryzen 7 7700X, MSI B650-P Pro WiFi, G.Skill Flare X5 Series 32GB DDR5-6000 Kit, Computer Build Bundle - $399.99
^ microcenter has some sick deals sometimes
if all you're after is the best bang for the buick build
add a radeon 7600 to that for $258, good 750w psu for $110, nice case for $150, and a good 2tb ssd for $100 (wow) , and you've got a build for $1018
still a bit more than that laptop though
Available for In-Store Pickup Only.
that is one of the tough things I suppose but that desktop would smoke the shit out of that laptop
indeed, and the closest one is in tustin california probably
unfortunately a 7700x is $329 on amazon by itself
But i also am... basically kinda f+cked because i am in my own space of deals
yep, it's all tradeoffs 😦
And seemingly just A Generation behind too
i'm not sure you'd be satisfied with a complete desktop build for $723 lol
I mean, i am willing to listen to a custom
But... ye know
Kinda gotta see if its even feasible
but trying to maximize specs in a laptop at $723 is not going to yield you anything terribly satisfying either
i mean it might
yep! i understand 🙂
Right
This is also why i kinda pointed out the price of the UPS
Since that does kinda dig into the cost of a PC
Right now i am working at around 900 budget
And its 900 budget, like, including all i need
From power of the laptop itself... to actual shipping costs, or costs of obtaining a UPS
I can stretch it to 1k too
But you know, choices n lack of deals n so
yea it looks like a tiny table
hm
why can't you buy your own and just take it when/if you leave?
Hard to move
I have no space in my car as is
ahh I see
@royal forge is the desk technically your property now
it seems like ergonomic nightmare rn
If its technically yours, by a large chunk of wood and just put it on top
could also try clampimng a monitor arm and having your screen hang off the back
but that might cause it to tip backwards lol
ehh while the desk is tiny, the top looks like a solid little piece of mdf
wouldn't be any worse than clamping a cheap ikea desk
i'd be more concerned about the desk tipping over lol
it looks so thin
its so easy to just
slap a top on it lol
you dont even need to screw it in if you dont own it
It's what I did with my desk
The top helped a lot
But I did have to secure it in place with some screws
Not sure if some sort of adhesive would work as an alternative
Im worried the damned thing cant take the weight
But for what?
4gb vram is no-no
…Games? Especially when devs care less about optimization and slap DLSS/FSR on everything?
at least 8 nowdays
I am asking in the sense of like
I, whom doesn't ever buy AAA Games and is legit only on the scope of MMOs of repute
Wonder what even this vram is used for
Ultra settings?
I unno how to phrase it aside just, me not knowing why high VRAM is such in high demand
if it can take your monitor itll take a shitty piece of wood
you ahve my engineers promies on that
I'll see if i can find a piece then
128 bit memory. what is this, the days of the fx 5200? (I may or may not be looking at one for my upcoming dos/win98 monster)
Vram is basically RAM for ur GPU.
Quick access memory for it to pull from.
One thing that VRAM is good for, is rendering things.
E.g. i do 3D renders. If I have a GPU with more vram, it can handle larger uh.. "parts" of the render at the same time, improving performance
So basically more VRAM to a certain extent means more performance
Kinda
Tech mentors pls correct if wrong
well its just memory, its not good at rendering or anything, it just has to pass along data quickly and without errors
Ah ye
Just it handles larger uh
Larger textures better?
It loads faster since the cache is larger?
textures and world geometry, yeah
you need to fit everything required to render into VRAM, else you're going to need to use system memory to do that which is going to be Very Slow
or it might just crash depending on the game
ye vram is pretty much entirely trimmed to speed and handling large amounts of data
depends on what your mods are for, higher quality models/textures = more VRAM
I think 4GB should be enough for mmos?
for ffxiv? for sure
Unless ur doing 8k grape textures
textures are very lowres generally
my gf is using my old 980 with 4gb vram + mods and it runs just fine so yeah
Each hair particle is simulated
depends a lot on the game, if your mmo loads a big open world with lots of detail at once you'll need more but yeah xiv should be fine with less
wasn't that long ago we were running on the ps3
honestly, the bigger issue are the "modders" who make you pay for their shitty mod that then comes along with 70k tris vs the 3k that the vanilla version of that outfit had
Oh man
Those fuckers
Cant even clean up their fuckin mesh
Models the fuckin tiny rings on the chainmail instead of a simple texture map
or just a billion polys on a flat surface
Leather strap for the arm for the shield? I modelled the threads on that
i had one modder make a jacket mod but for whatever reason it had an entire body + undershirt and shirt below said jacket, including modeled nipples
you never saw any of that
the file for that stupid thing was 360mb
nipples

Were the nipples textured
So how mods are made in ff14
Is that you load the fbx for the body mod
Then the jacket or w/e
They're basically body replacements no?
So you have the skin still there
Yes they are
So part of the process is removing what's not seen
Uh seems like they skipped that lmfao
i wouldnt care if it was just some newbie making a mod, but the person in question sold it for money. thats unacceptable lmao
Show me the jacket?
Got a pic?
i might have a pic somewhere
boob
dont have the exact one anymore, only have another i took apart
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1120537229245284534/1121543606805733587/image.png left is vanilla, right is modded
more tris than the entirety of Ocarina of Time
lmao is that tbse base?
ye
did you censor the nipples
yerp
LMAO
Hmmm
I camt exactly be sure
But there are people who use DAZ clothing and essentially repurpose it for game clothing
Just the torso mesh looks.. like a daz model one
Sorry. Not familiar with that
body replacement for male characters
just look up TBSE Xivmodarchive
cant link it here because schlong
here read that, general guide
Ah
Sorry. Its cuz DAZ models are the only ones i know that has such high res at the nipples kek
Side note, u can clean up the mesh by selecting the torso then Ctrl + L
Save the anger for sulemil betrayal
one sec gonna reduce my pc to ashes by recalculating this mesh
Are u just.. remeshin it?
Ah
is the worst
Well
on my screenshot? the tbse body + a shirt + the actual jacked and shirt
all with stupidly high polycount
just explaining to aoi
20Mbps is kinda piss poor speed ye?
yes but it's fine for general browsing and gaming as long as the ping isn't awful
I used to have 20mbps
it was a massive pain in the arse to download any game
it took days sometimes
i have 20mbps
i misread that completely lol
look
they took out the flowerpots
ff14 needs unnecessary high poly counts SOMEWHERE
modders just filling the void
Has anyone played ff14 in VR?
will only get into VR once it is fully 5 sensorial immersion.
I just wish current video cards wouldn't make your room melt without AC
A wonder
My PC has two drives, and I plan to port the second to the laptop
Is there any potential notes or issues that could cause, for games or programs, or...all 100% fine)
I was thinking about upgrading to ultrawide but I'm worried that it'll be very hard to run dawntrail in high refresh ultrawide
The one I want is cheaper now too
whats your specs?
Rtx 3080 12 gb i7 11700k and 32 gbs of ram
you will be fine
In 1440p maybe
nah

ffxiv really doesnt eat that much and 7.0 wont change much about that, because they want to keep the game available for as many people as possible

its unlikely to eat much more than running it now with shaders and maybe a few mods already
I'm hitting 90%+ gpu usage
which is normal if you run at uncapped fps or with a high fps limit in general
the minimum is becoming a 2060? or the recommended?
I suppose the definition of available for as many people as possible is ymmv lol
Today Buy HP 15.6" Laptop, Intel Core i3-1115G4, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Spruce Blue, Windows 11 Home in S mode, 15-dy2792wm at Walmart.com
ffxiv as it stands probably won't run on that ^
2060 is recommended
Isn't Endwalker recommended
Kinda too good anyways?
That is, max settings and 1080 n so
Also I settled on an RTX 3050ti laptop
Because I can't find reason to pay more than that for what I use
you'll probably be happy with it
yeah endwalker recommended basically became 7.0 min
and we know the game runs ok on worse hardware than the EW min spec
so if they stick to that kind of leeway it should be fine
i think it'll struggle now a bit more with now the more detailed world
and, where shadows are
but there is probably a setting for it
so "minimum requirements" is probably what you would have selected for medium settings?
I still wonder on the drive situation
I wanna know what the new ao method is
I basically wonder if I should reinstall FFXIV
Or just full toss it in
explain
I got a SSD on my main PC, with steam n FFXIV in it
If I remove it and put it on the laptop, which does have a SATA bay, would it be fine?
Or better just fully reinstall on the laptop
XIV should be fine, just use the unofficial launcher and point it at that drive
steam do you mean it's actually installed to that drive or that you have a steam library on there
Both
not sure how well that'll work, I'd say give it a try but be prepared to reinstall steam
I bet some other nerd knows more about steam portability though
it might be fine
I may do the reinstall, it is a 500 base drive and I don't need much
At most, use it to port just raw files
Which that should just be fine, yeah? Vids n images n files without programs
it might all be fine, but yeah videos and images np for sure
How do i do this in game?
do what, exactly?
the text bubbles for chat
I think that's a feature under chat settings, but I forgot what it's called
it's a plugin
yeah its a plug in
Thats certainly a look
i wish it was a built-in feature
maybe people would talk at the crystals more often lol
Its still funny to me the sheer scale of upgrade i get
From my current PC, to this new Laptop
The CPU is a 100% performance boost
And the GPU is a 500% Boost ;D

https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-RTX-3050-Ti-Laptop-vs-AMD-RX-Vega-8-Ryzen-iGPU/m1559532vsm441833
https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-12500H-vs-AMD-Ryzen-3-2200G/m1793224vsm441832
Based on 106,493 user benchmarks for the AMD RX Vega 8 (Ryzen iGPU) and the Nvidia RTX 3050-Ti (Laptop), we rank them both on effective speed and value for money against the best 702 GPUs.
This is legit what i am to what i am going to
and i been playing FFXIV at all low, 30 FPS, 720p
it's a big upgrade but don't trust userbenchmark in general
Not a clue what a proper site to trust would be
Since its a Hyundai the real question is how fast can it be stolen

Smoke? Fire? Any and all Particle dense type of visual effect?
Those forever will be the most painful of assets for any GPU to render
High quality textures not taking that much render capacity's part of why VRAM's become such a selling point to a lot of people
Until the directx change to allow direct access to vram lands it'll be slow to swap assets from system ram

Science!
I stay skeptical
Has a Korean quantum research group cracked the holy grail of physics, an ambient temperature and pressure superconductor that will win them a Nobel prize and change humanity forever?
Maybe, maybe not.
But one thing's for sure, the demo video of their LK-99 material on their website is an EPIC FAIL!
It's such an embarrassing mistake you won't b...
Lmfao I don't know anything about physics physics, but I agree with dave on this pont
sadly unfortunately probably not a real thing 😔
it could've revolutionized power transfer
It's cool
If it's real
All inventions and discovery have a period of disbelief and skeptism, it's how it makes it out that counts
the new ear pillows and covers for my headphones arrived
when I compare the new pillows to the old ones it's really obvious how badly worn the old ones are
I have a yearly subscription for my headphones lol
I have 3-4 over ears, most i loan out to friends for productiom and gaming
A hand full of iems that I wear daily, needs new foam tips
a pair of TWS
wait you can subscribe on headphones?
oh
I hate wearing really worn things
I have one pair of Sennheiser HD600 that are several years old now and I just replace parts on it as needed
a year or two ago I had to replace the cable, now the pillows and foam membrane between the speakers and my ears
it's so easy to replace parts on the HD600, is it that easy on all the big Sennheiser headphones?
Yep
I have two 800s, although they are lent out pretty often
But they are about the same
like maintenance wise
I actually prefer my hd6xx for daily use
what's the difference?
It's less open and easier to drive lol
The 800s will not run off my interface rofl
My friend group pooled money to buy the two for all of us to use
It's pretty nice for scoring and proofing, but for gaming it feels the same as my hd6xx
I bought some stock hd 650 cabling for my 6xx
The cable massdrop provides is too short
yeah its really short
i got lucky because my stuff is on my desk but its still pretty short
I have a DAC on my desk
a Schiit Modi
I have to say, I was recommended Schiit by someone in here, but I was disappointed by the material quality of their products
I ordered a DAC and an amp, the Modi and the Magni
the Magni eliminated the stereo channels from the DAC and blew itself up within a week or two
and on the Modi, the audio channels are switched, L is output by R and vice versa, I had to swap around the two plugs on my conversion cable to compensate for that
at least the audio it outputs is of very high quality I suppose
but not worth the trouble and additional costs of shipping it here to the NL
I will not be buying Schiit again
No complaints with my topping dx3 pro
Powers my 6xx plenty and acts as a dac for my integrated speaker amp
hmm can't find that one new anymore, but I can find it used
the new one is called the dx3 pro+
that's the one I can only find used
The one I'm currently using is the Atom by jdlabs
man, i bought a laptop stand for my desk and it broke right away
its one of those with an arm and the screws for the clamp, that clamp onto the pipe, just shredded the threading while screwing them in and now it doesnt hold
i didnt even use any force
fucking cheap ass metal
Pure consumer grade chinesium
weird considering i use a monitor arm from the same company and its build really well
My friend command strip a lenovo dock to the wall in his cubicle
It still holds the laptop to this day
So, I'm building my first gaming PC, does anyone have monitor recommendations?
Preferably $200 or below?
@real edge you got some extra budget monitors?
here
Sadly you're not the first person I've heard such an experience from 😦
the clue is in the name
lol
Yeah it's rather... Schiit
word
to be fair, thjat's probably a PhD role with specific knowledge
like they probably want someone who worked on chatgpt or whatever lol

yeah they obviously want a expert veteran
in terms of maximizing income I definitely picked the wrong software specialization lol 😄
i don't think it was the worst choice, just not necessarily the most lucrative
hey i could use some help, my B550M DS3H motherboard comes with https://i.imgur.com/WnvJ9f7.png those M2 connectors, but i'm a bit confused on the 4.0/3.0 x4 x2 thing. What should I look out for?
the 4.0 slot on a B550 board is physically closest to the CPU and uses that for its lanes, while the one away from it uses the motherboard chipset instead
ah okay
i assume the 3.0 and 4.0 is kind of similar to like, DDR3 DDR4 as in which it could support?
nah
Basically you want to use the one near cpu (between the graphics card slot) for boot drive (highest priority) and others for storage
they're compatible with each other but you won't reach the marketed speeds if you put a 4.0 drive into a 3.0 slot
The 4.0/3.0 part refers to the generation of ssd it supports (current one). The x4 is the speed of that generation
ah okay
my OS is on a SSD and otherwise using HDD's, so i've been considering now getting a 1 or 2 TB NVME for games
You should be fine with a 3.0 NVMe for most games
Unless it's something like Ratchet and Clank and you want seamless portal transitions
Scamazon has a sale on wd blue 2tb m2 ssd for 85 moneys
Something like that would probably be good enough ™
https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Plus-PCIe-NAND-6600MB/dp/B098WKQRDL this one is good too
Are you ready for next-gen performance? The Crucial P5 Plus SSD delivers remarkable speed and data protection with sequential reads up to 6600MB/s for transformative computing. Engineered by Micron with the latest Gen4 NVMe technology, the Crucial P5 Plus includes advanced features like full hard...
Teamgroup mp34 is slightly cheaper and has dram cache (*hopefully)
The p5+ is good too
thank you for the recommendation
Any cheap 1440p monitor recommendations?
300$
at most
cheap and good 1440p display
I have absolutely no idea where to ask this but
how in the motherload does a weapon have custom animation?
in FFXIV I mean
to be specific, I'm trying to mod the blazefire saber onto a chakram because well my goals are beyond anyone's understanding, but somehow I can't get the damn thing to fold
Have to inject the animation unless you're versed in maya
illegal
god that sounds difficult
also Maya costs money, no?
okay plan
establish a carrier in animation
10 years at a studio should be enough
use studio's code to get free Maya
make a dumb animation
profit
or just get good at blender
I don't think blender uses the same things
or at least the animation isn't baked into the weapon
step 1: steal maya
you should have bought a few to resell!
@cerulean talon well, apparently all that work i did on converting the psu may be entirely pointless

got a new laser head a few days ago, and other than a questionable jury-rigging of the cable to the laser itself, the existing brick powers it just fine (so far?)
What's the difference between the diffrent PCIe versions? I have a RTX 2060 and I'm not sure if it would be compatible with PCIe 5.0
What do the different versions represent though? Feeling a bit overwhelmed atm ngl
I see
So it really shouldn't be that big of a deal I guess?
Ok I figured it out
thanks
Is anyone in here knowledgeable on Windows 11
just fire out your question and see
My friend got a new laptop in with Windows 11 on it and he gets a 'defaultuser0' login at the login screen even after factory resetting the laptop and he can't log in
I would seek support from the retailer/manufacturer
if it's a new laptop and it doesn't work, return that sucker
Sounds like the factory image was fucked
At logon screen press shift+f10
type "net user [username] *", where [username] is the name of your user account. Will get instructions from there
nah. get your windows updates and reboot
if it's on but you're not using it all you're doing is wasting electricity and generating heat for no reason
i do a little bit of crypto mining on the side
jk i dont do jack shit its just always on cuz im lazy

so yeah, get in the habit of turning it off when you're done for the night. your electric bill will thank you
i can pay for the bills but does it affect my pc in any way
as long as it's not overheating (when's the last time you cleaned out all the dust?) it's probably fine
you use something like hwinfo64
do sensors only
im on ff rn
that's nbd then
oh ok
you should dust it when you can be bothered, but it's not urgent
replace it when you can, but based on those temps when gaming it's not going to blow up or anything
thats good thank u good sir
Kinda want to go itx so I can fit the tower back on top of the desk and not on a stand, but I got a lot of bulky shit in my build
Looks clean tho fr
Thanks
The 2000D can fit some CHONKY cards, but you do need ITX boards
Like you could fit the Founders 4090 or the PNY 4090 in there
Can fit almost any of the 7900 XTXs except Red Devil or the super-high end Sapphire one
You can even fit a 360mm AIO in it
Might work for me, I've got a 3080 seahawk that's got a rad, and a thick air cooler tho
The air cooler kinda what I'm worried about?
And extra pcie space for my elgato
you can always just let your computer go to sleep when you're not using it
I dont have fans on my gpu
What gpu are you running 😭
3060ti
oh no what happened to his fans
https://youtu.be/v7MYOpFONCU in case someone needs it

...
Perhaps should be pinned actually
ya know one thing I never quite got with, was attaching the heatsink to the motherboard before putting it in the case lol
especially with AIO watercoolers, it's just clunky to do that
this is good though
Yeah I never do that with an AIO unless transplanting it from one case to another
ehehe
yea there are times where I've moved the radiator while the block is attached to the board and I'm afraid something will come loose and slam into the motherboard
tbh I think the most annoying thing about new builds is getting the ram into the ram slots lol
people always talk about how weird locking in an LGA processor is, but I find ddr4/ddr5 to be really weird and annoying too
it's not obvious which way is up because the stupid cutout is almost in the middle
heheh "this side probably won't come back on modern motherboards"
... no that's just an asus thing. Asus uses ram slots that only have a latch on the top
Locking an LGA CPU isn’t weird but locking DRAM into a slot is
especially on Asus
remember, “for those who dare”
I mean, isn't that the exact reason for the notch is it either lines up or it doesn't? The trickier part is just making sure you firmly jam down both sides of the stick to make sure it has a solid connection.
Most awkward though was the pre-DDR stuff that needed to be pushed in at an angle and turned vertically.
LOL edo dram
sdram had 2 notches, as I recall
so it was super obvious
but ddr it's kinda in the middle so you end up with that usb superposition thing 😄
-puts ram into slot- -tries pushing in- -it rocks to one side-
-flips it over- -it still rocks to one side-
-flips it back- -it clicks into place-
-disbelief ensues- -wiggle stick a little to make sure it's secure- -it is-
oh what the hell lmao
I have never had this issue, I think you have a pebkac error going on
Just gently place the stick down and see if the notch lines up, otherwise flip it around, then push down...
it is definitely pebcak
DDR3 was the easiest I guess
Interesting thing is how DDR4 has that thicker area of pins
Oh if you were talking DDR5 then yeah I see what you mean, that is like a fscking troll move https://www.anigma.com/cdn/shop/articles/655fabaa0ab8749a0efd1a0ef3a208bf_770x.progressive.jpg?v=1668774951
At which point I assume they are faced "front" in the blisterpack, which means they should have that facing away from the CPU
yea it was already kinda close in ddr4 though
I know it looks way obvious but in reality haha
idk
also I'm used to installing ram after sticking the motherboard in 😛
I really don't understand these standards groups anymore.
i think at this point it's just dell decides lol
Their entire purpose is to make a standard that is simple and easy to use, and USB and HDMI have both messed that up, USB far worse. And now they could have put the notch anywhere and they decide 1mm off center is a great idea??
lmao Dell
Also USB is a weird-ass standard
can’t get their naming conventions straightened out
Absolutely shameful, they should all be fired even though they're not paid.
It feels almost malicious

haha I remember this
@tribal crater buy this 4090
ha, thats sick
if i wasn't poor...
that looks pretty
too bad it's asus
that means it'll cost 2x msrp and will never be available to mere mortals like us unless we happen to go to microcenter when they get a delivery
nothing wrong with ASUS
also that board doesn't look like a strix it looks like a maximus code or someshit
but yea nothing wrong with the thing being made by asus
AMD fanboys just jumped on some bandwagon hating ASUS when like 4 other board makers had the same problem
though I admit how ASUS handled it was shitty
I'm just sore about how they did the gundam stuff lol
and the 'white oc edition' 30 series
that was bullshit
elaborate, I dont think I heard about that
when everyone and their bro wanted a white 30 series
asus made the white 30 series cards limited edition
oh they still do that sorta, its like 200 bucks extra lol
yeaaa
I hate that
the funny thing is their motherboards are the opposite wait no that's msi lol
the silver carbon is cheaper lol
I figure it probably wouldnt be that hard to rattle can it though the heatsink might be interesting
gigabyte did the same with the 30 series (vision was cheaper than aorus)
you can't really rattle can the fans
Unless they start being bad again
a plus side of the FE cards is they are the easiest to buy water blocks for
the downside is the warranty isn't the best lol
I don’t think Asus’s problems are strictly related to AMD
It’s definitely there with the ROG Ally, while, yes, it has an AMD chip, it somehow manages to melt microSD cards with its… excellent placement
yea my experience with asus products (and not just my last build's motherboard) is that they are lots of flash and sloppy substance
.... to be fair that's kinda par for the course with DIY PC parts
at the end of the day this shit's not all that much better than whatever bullshit dell sells in their computers
they just add shiny plastic/metal decoration on it to get people excited about paying for it
in some cases I wouldn't be shocked if a dell white box GPU was actually better made and had more carefully written firmware
because they have to actually support warranties lmao
random taiwanese gaming PC company X can just send you into an RMA loop and then decide you damaged your part and reject the warranty claim
I’m sitting here going “why can’t we have that shit a la carte”
and then I remembered that we can’t have nice things
i'm not sure they really make all that much off selling the raw machines themselves
i think it's mostly made off selling warranties, maintenance plans, the add-on software, financing, etc
having owned a few, and taken apart a few more, and watched steve bitch about dell's way of making the alienware cases lol
i wonder how much that stupid case costs to make
I would be happy to buy a Dell 4090 at MSRP because that shit will fit in a lot of systems, including some, if not most SFF
they probably do sell the part
i would think that a FE is cheaper though
also, ultimately, I like the flashy metal/plastic shrouds hahaha
like that red eva asus one is neat
thats hot
wtf they are living in 2013
I dunno if shitpost but seems like shitpost
the GTX 690 was a cool card when it first came out though
that was the first time nvidia used that aluminum stock cooler design
the 680 was generic

lol I only last week retired the gtx660 my bro was using
670 was a decent card
I pulled out from a garage bin like five months ago, a sealed 470 gpu
No not a rx470
A gtx 470
I have no idea what I ever planned for it
The oldest nvdia card I own is probably the riva tnt2
Otherwise the voodoo banshee iirc
I love a good ole PCI-E shitty GPU that doesn't need power for debugging.
Makes it way easier to debug, well, everything
470 needs external power
My Acer nitro 5 has arrived
And I gotta wait a full work shift before I touch it.
Orz
But for now, what things to do with it?
I know remove bloatware like Norton, Windows update and driver updates. Anything else?
re-enable windows defender lol
Well
True fair
Why does intel turbo boost turn back on despite bios having it disabled
Is there a in windows function?
This on top of msi having the worst bios known to man
lol you should see the asus bios if you think msi is bad
I prefer asus lmao
Msi is setup in a manner its impossible to find anything normally
And I found msi center was the issue with the clock speed
i wouldn't remove your drivers!
Nah it's msi center has an extreme game mode that was turned on forcing the cpu to 5.8ish and it was hot af
So I'm just turning that mode off
I also think msi center is just shitty bloat more than it's an actual driver
There are some better less intensive programs for that as well. Most board manufacturer programs are mid af tbh
especially gigabyte
I never install that crap
It was already put on the pc by the other guy working on the build so I had to salvage what he did
speaking strictly of software here: Asus' packaged software with my Z390 Maximus XI Hero... is why I swore I'd never buy another Asus board.
You should be able to adjust fan curves from within the OS but their fan curve editor was garbage and bullshit
and after a windows reinstall a couple years later I could never get fan control working from within windows again
I mean the downloadable software on all is shit, but bios wise asus is so much easier to navigate I meant
to be fair, I never tried to do it with the msi board
I never even installed the software lmao
I bought a commander pro and never looked back
yep i'd rather use icue
I think msi bios layout is a headache
Maybe only matched by like hp and dell
and they don't use stupid brand names and acronyms for everything
FanXPERT 4
ffs damnit asus
Just use fan control
AI OC CONTROL
Works across all fan brands and is better than most
the biggest joy i get out of not using an asus board in my current machine
is not seeing the ROG eye every time I boot it
Fair lmao
I just can't stand msi in almost all areas
Their build quality feels worse, ugly aesthetic, bad bios
side by side
i think the carbon board I have was built better than the maximus hero I had
no way in hell I'd pay $600 for that
if I were to spend that much on a board i'd want one of those last evga boards lol
asus is out of their fucking minds
Maybe just that I work with them at work so I'm more used to seeing the cheap versions of everyboard
But the msi's do not feel as nice as some of the rogs
to be fair I've never used an asus prime board
if you're comparing prime to whatever msi sells on the cheap side lol
I owned a prime x470-pro and it was probably the best board I ever used
i'm glad to hear they worked fine for ya
to be fair mine's also worked fine lol
it does like to give a lot of voltage to the cpu though lol
i was tempted to go with a prime because of the combo deals microcenter has
but i went with an msi carbon instead because I wanted a 7 segment post debug screen 😄
still rocking my b450 tomahawk with a 5800x3d and a 4070

only reason i'd consider an upgrade it for more nvme storage potential
There was one customer who brought in like a super expensive rog board that has like 3ish m.2 slots and then a pcie card for even more
And he had like 5 2tb m.2s
Crazy shit
My biggest issue with mobo manufacturers is that the white mobos are never good for what I'm doing 😭
ya my board has 4 m.2 slots and I want to fill them all
!hank
Anyone have a solution for double clicking on a mouse? I cleaned it up when I was vinyl wrapping it but still has issues
!hank
lmao
blow into it

its probably shot then, you can try cleaning out the micro switch if it has one (most do)
yeah I used an ipa wipe on the switch after taking the shell off
it probably is shot I just dont want to spend money
Ig I could go back to my logitech g600 if the issue becomes too much
I soldered new switches onto all of my Logitech nice
I hate the onrons because they all double click eventually
I am now going through the update mess
any like
"Keep an eye out on this" notes for my set up of this Laptop? (acer NItro 5)
Innit only omron CN made? Iirc omron JP made ain't double click....much
Had a convo w a JP the other day about switches
何故日本語にしましたか?
you got your hands on an eva card? sweet.
Old mouse?
Nvm
he about to put hands on that card
leave asuka alone!
leave her alone!
Nooo
I just thought it was funny as an EoE reference
haha
hey @modest moss people want my head
