I might actually buy an iPhone when they finally make the obvious announcement this september
the Iphone 15 normal and plus, will STILL have a lightning connector
something that runs USB 2.0 speeds, in 2023
nah I doubt it, that would just cause them headaches when the EU mandate hits in mid 2024
at worst they might just announce it for european iPhones
every big tech company sucks honestly
they just suck in different ways, depending on your needs
apple is a cult
true, but that's the cult members' problem
apple, may have Great software, for the average joe, sure
but damn they fuck up their hardware so many times
its a joke and they never own up to it
and ripoff customers in broad daylight
and even getting sued, they are really good at weaseling out of paying basically anything back
the average dude is never gonna understand tech well enough to know anything that's not on a billboard
to consumers
theyve done it at least a dozen times if not more
okay, this is absolutely true lmao
I used to think they designed their hardware just for the sake of being anti-repair
but I've realised they just really suck at designing premium products now
yea, some of it is excessively anti-consumer
nah that's not it
it's all just marketing, they don't need anything else
apple is pretty much
like the chips that literally self destruct when you try to read their data, lol
"we need to maximize profits so we are going to only ever build this thing for the 95% of users we want to buy it and we won't make any concessions for anyone else"
s e c u r i t y
"What about an HDMI port?" "FUCK YOU"

pft if you let security researchers get involved they'll insist on soldering the chassis shut
and making it permanently brick itself if you type the password in wrong 3 times
apple does make one concession, because it's great PR for them as a trendy liberal company
their devices go super hard on the accessibility features โฟ
or the security on the M1 or M2 chips, i can't remember which, where it was turned on for the SSDs by default.
but they didn't let you chose to have it on, actually i think it was an OS update that enabled it.
adn IF the motherboard died, due to their shit power delivery, which was well known.
you lose ALL the data
so they shouldn't?
are you offended at the idea that some amount of your iphone purchase went into R&D for blind people?
conveniently ignoring the slave labour they take advantage of
nope, they're doing exactly what they should be there
and the mobo being fried meant the chip was fried meant you couldn't recover the data
I'm just saying they do make some concessions
honestly I'll go on a limb here
-takes a deep breath-
I think apple is the only company that fucking knows what they're doing
ahahahahahahahah
like, despite all the anti consumer bs
and all the stupid decisions along the way
I can buy an iphone and know it was built to be used as an iphone. that exact model.
...that sounds like common sense, what do you mean
i can buy a macbook and know that, the team that designed that fucker designed it for a normal person to use to shitpost on facebook and manage their photo library
there are very few other machines I could see being made with those intentions
if you mean versus eg. the android ecosystem, where there are many different device profiles to design for
except maybe gaming laptops
then yeah, they do have that advantage
no, no that's not what I mean
so MS doesn't build windows for end users
MS builds windows for enterprise corporations to spy and micromanage their employees
you see signs of that in literally every product MS makes
yeah, I appreciate their ability to set fine-grained group policies that greatly reduce the problems IT staff have to clean up
tbh now that I think about it, I wouldn't be shocked if the reason they put so much R&D money into directx back in the 90s was to have a halo project to give people positive vibes about using windows
well aside from my sorta offensive naming of it there
my point was, as an end user, windows is not made for you to use
it's made for your employer to maximize your productivity or whatever
you can frame it in a positive light lol
I mean you're not wrong
android as an OS was designed to make google money
well, not at the very beginning buuut
windows doesn't feel like a very personal operating system, maybe it never has
and then it was used by every single chinese phone company as a cheap and easy way to not bother making software hahaha
the same way windows and linux are for every taiwanese pc builder
it's goofy that I can't stick my taskbar to the top of the screen any more
because microsoft said "nah"
yea those are just my thoughts lol
"you don't need those 20 lines of code"
microsoft cant make up their mind on what Windows 11 should be
I came to the realization that MS worked that way when I was fucking around with teams
and found out you just can't retrieve logs of old convos
no no no -shakes finger- that's something you need a sysadmin to do
they make it a fucking nightmare to copy & paste a conversation, too
I can't decide if that's intentional or incompetence
tahts just bad design of MS Teams
Teams is well known to have been brought up as a competitor to slack
oh I hate messaging apps where finding anything older than a few days is a nightmare
and is a hackjob of old Skype for business sutff
well, there's 2 or 3 reasons, afaik
like the chat history is there, the UX is just horrific
the first one has to do with legal compliance
like, they have a whole thing about legal policy and archiving teams convos
the second one is the way the messages are stored
iirc teams messages are basically exchange emails or something like that
so every message has this absurd amount of metadata attached to it
like back when teams was still fairly new, we could (and can still now) use some Skype for business commands in the back end to make changes to team Call functionality.
and it wasn't documented by microsoft
I think only cool softdev companies use Slack tho
its just that it used old Skype for business backend
it's a cobbled up mess of existing microsoft crap
yes
Teams is more like "welp our office has a microsoft ecosystem, so this is our chatting app"
if you open the web version of teams i a browser and open the inspector
you'll have seizures
a convo with 3 chat bubbles will have tens of thousands of html elements
we KNOW they cut back the team size for the devs on Teams, the moment it was good enough to compete with Slack at a basic level
ok maybe i'm exaggerating, but i'm not when I say it will still be at least 1000 elements
each message probably*
that any company using O365,would just use teams
that would explain why it runs like a 90s website on a 56k
and not pay for slack
it is SUPER DUPER BAD
web apps are like... a blessing and a curse
they're amazing for being OS-agnostic
-sigh-
anyone who used Skype for business, may rememebr, conversation history were actyaully saved in your mailbox
yea here's the other thing
my employer and many others
will buy ANYTHING microsoft sells
did you know, Teams does that as well, but it just hides the folder
because it just reuses SFB stuff for chat
but it feels like they hire a team of programmers to write the first version, fire them all, then get interns to slowly spaghettify the codebase after that
discord for example
ALL your teams conversation history, is saved in your mailbox
and accessible by sysadmins, but its a fucking mess to read
as its literally one email, per message
this app really shouldn't lag as hard as it does when switching servers
sysadmins can't actually tell if multiple mesages are part of the same conversation
or channels
as messages are missing their channel subjects
last i checked anyway
last time i exported out Teams messages from O365
was a while ago, but i doubt its changed

what the fuck, bro
is that where it's actually stored, or just a copy?
no its stored there, literally
honestly, I'd be disappointed if microsoft ever did something cleanly
with the right tools YOU can even see ALL your mailbox data
it just wouldn't be microsoft
as technically your account has access to it, it has to to you know, load it
yeah, makes sense
everything in Outlook, is in the mailbox
sometimes I just think to myself
contacts, calendars, journal, tasks, etc, etc
mail rules
you can find, and pull the data if you need, the RAW data
you could technically unhide the folder where teams conversations are saved as well
"if I just recreated Teams from scratch, which I could do because I don't have to support a legacy codebase, it would run a hundred times faster and do all the same stuff" lol
as mailbox folders, something i figured out like 10+ years ago, before Teams was a thing.
can be set to hidden
so with the right tool, i can make a new folder in someone's mailbox, hide it, then store stuff in there without them knowing
oh, do you want to really grind my gears about mailbox implementations noot?
ask me how Gmail stores its label folders

they are... but here's the thing
Gmail labels are non-heirarchical
that's what I was saying lol
meaning you can slap 1 or 2 or 12 on a single email
when I said every teams message is basically some kinda exchange email thing
and has an absurd amount of metadata
unfortunately, the mailbox standard is just a regular heirarchical system
it is such an impressive shit show
yeh, no surprise
like, on one hand, I'm a big fan of mcgyvering existing shit together to make a new thing
so if you connect to a Gmail account in a mail client, it just shows you duplicate copies of all your labelled emails in different folders
your search results will be a mess
I just decided to do the next best thing
use one label for any email, and then click "archive" on them so they don't appear in the Inbox folder
anyway, if you want a great rundown of Apple's "Amazing" engineering, as well as their policies to actually you know "do right" by the customer.... lol

this is a bit old but still valid
yea yea
๐
yea yea yea
honestly
that's an equally useless anecdote
he even has a video on Recommended Apple products
i think louis rossmann would have an aneurysm if he had to deal with a 10 year old toshiba laptop
that dont have glaring design faults
or a 6 year old acer
or a 3 year old gateway from walmart that cost $250
they all have the same bullshit going on
he probably does, kyanche
BUT its how Apple also tread their customers, thats utter bull
but since apple is more expensive and stuff
and not owning their mistakes for basically ALL of thsoe faults
the guy has ran a NYC computer repair shop for the last decade
it's a nce big easy target to hate on
he complains about any brand that does things like this
and to be fair, I don't know how one can "service" a laptop when the service is throwing it in the trash and giving you a refurb
i think people should expect better from an expensive brand, in terms of quality and warranty support.
i can get a crap HP, but get them to warranty it wihtout a fight
take the imac and mac studio for instance
apple goes as far as giving the usb-c ports their own replaceable daughter card
Acer, can get fucked,they suck
... but solders the nand chips onto the fucking motherboard
Toshiba, no issues either
it's like some weird bipolar mindset
Lenovo, same,
but to be totally fair
apple's engineering team probably has a few different people calling the shots
the current crop of imacs are way better than what they were selling the past 10 years
there WILL be good and bad products from all manufacturers, its HOW they support and treat you that matters.
the soldered on nand chips will probably outlast the 'hybrid drive' BULL SHIT
I imagine they consider it a win when their team leader allows them to make a sane decision lol
and Apple has a bad track record of that
maaaan
-makes obscene gestures-
they should've fired whoever came up with the 'hybrid drive' idea
err FUSION DRIVE
fuck that person
i believe up until the m1 imac launched, the default 27" imac came with a fusion drive still
yeeeah we shouldn't really be mixing those two on one drive, but it was a transition technology I guess
just about everyone uses SSDs these days
and the only thing that changed between like 2012 and 2021 was that they reduced the size of the ssd from 128gb to 32gb
the only end users who buy hard drives are those who need external backups
but really, for end users? a regular macbook air is probably fine and will probably last 5 years just fine
and ofc so will a $500 lenovo
or even better, a t61p from goodwill computer works ๐
(please don't do that I'll slap you)
it probably will, kyanche, but consider this: things break sometimes
in which case
if you live within driving distance of an apple store and it's under warranty.....
great!
even really good laptops break down too, because they contain a little thing called wear parts
if only the ones near me sold legacy computer shit ๐
eg. batteries and drives
the ssd dies, you replace it, fantastic
the motherboard dies
you go request an rma and they ask you to post a video of the problem or whatever
ok at least it's framework
what if it was asus? gigabyte? acer?
have fun spending 2 weeks without a laptop
if a component is guaranteed to break eventually, like a battery or a drive, it should not be difficult for a user to replace
maybe longer if the repair facility is in asia
also with the consumer lines dell won't even fix it if you can't get a trouble code out of the self test software >>
unfortunately apple - and every company who copies apple's engineering decisions - do make it difficult
I remember having a very heated argument with a dell rep over this once
dvd drive died in my bro's stupid dell all in one
it didn't show up in their self test bullshit at all because it was dead
and they were like "so there's no problem"
thats more some dumb support engineer incompetence, you can get that at litearlly any company
as they follow a script not logic
yeah, I'm not sure if your defence is "llots of companies do this so it's good, actually"
hense the "have you un/plugged it in" joke
the only thing apple brings to the table that the other companies don't, is those bougie stores where you can walk in with a warranty concern and walk out with a refurb
but if you spend $500 on the dell 24/7 onsite warranty ๐
At least in the case of the Dell, you can just replace the drive yourself if you wanted to.
you can get someone to fix your dell shitbox at home
with apple, well, yea, good luck with that
either pay for a out of warranty replacement device, or buy a new one
I do enjoy not having serialized components in my computer that I own myself ๐
also, what percentage of dell consumer line buyers are going to do that?
and that leads to the thing I hate about apple ๐
that "we built it for 95% of the people who will buy it, if you're the 5% fuck you"
depends on IF they dont fuck you over, and make out its your fault.
which Apple makes it quite easy to do
apple stacked the 'fuck you' real high with the mac pro
kyanche, that's why I made the point about accessibility features lol
that's one way they support the 5%
this is why i want a framework laptop if I ever buy another laptop ๐
seriously
I agree the majority of their customer experience isn't like that sadly
i love that their shit is built to be tinkered with
AND lets not even go into the incentives Apple repair centers have to fuck over customers.
due to the really high requirements of hte contract they have to sign, the amount of turnover the MUST make a year, to maintain their contract.
means many repair centers, basically have to make customers pay for expensive repairs, to keep themselves in business.
yup

recent example
of Apply engineering fault
yeah, the apple repair certification program is stupid
and repair centers easily being able to just tell you, "well the phone is dead, requires a mobo replacement"
will cost you hundreds, because YOU dropped the phone, sorry
it's just a way for them to gatekeep the parts and knowledge required too fix their bad hardware
oh yea, the gatekeeping on parts and schematics is insane
yep
lol i love their malicious compliance way of selling the service parts directly
and like mailing you a giant suitcase of tools
i can literally find system engineering documents, on HP's website
for basically ALL their enterprise laptops
there should really be a service manual PDF for every consumer product
they do look nicer than dell enterprise laptops though ??
old tech used to come with one of those manuals pretty consistently
but dell's precision laptops are nasty
i mean the 5000 series are bsaically just xps so they're ok i guess
I hope the EU makes that a requirement someday
I guess
i take that back
i just found service manualy in 30 seconds
for Entertainement HP laptops
i had one of these back in the day
ez, first result
when googling HP Dv6 service manual
imagine laser etching this out of it
as i remembered the base model number

This guide is a troubleshooting reference used for maintaining and servicing the computer.
has all the part numbers listed for spares, etc
BEAUTIFUL sentence ๐
even the full model numbers
so you could find the parts elsewhere
for stuff that isn't just theirs of course
hehe i remember my alienware aurora r4 had one like that
got a good laugh out of it
and this laptop is from 2009!
the documents are still online
like, as much shit as ill give Some products, as long as you learn what brands warranty/support their products better in the long run, THATS what you should look for
all brands have good and bad products
its HOW they treat their customers that actually matters
hence, Apple bad ๐
but the cult of apple, means apple fans just, take the hit and come back for more it seems.
too bad OSX and iOS can't run on other devices
otherwise Apple would get fucked
(well technically OSX can, if you are tech savvy enough)
praying for the day where operating systems are designed to do whatever you want with em
and don't feel like cyberpunk augmentation rentals
I used to think MacOS was worth paying the apple tax
but it gets more obnoxious every year ;_;
(I still hate using windows for writing software though.. so I'll probably try to just switch back to linux for that)
what advantages does macOS have for a power user these days?
I heard they've lost a lot of their edge when it comes to the creative market
adobe treats them as a second-class citizen now
if you grew up/worked with macos for that stuff for years, the hotkeys are in your muscle memory, and the windows version is weird and annoying :p
also up there, I've been programming on linux/bsd since I was 12, my dude
macos might be weird in some ways but it still feels like a *nix machine
windows is weird.
you could go pedantic and drill me on how macos isn't a real linux and the system libraries are different, and even linuxes differentiate from each other with things like systemd, and then there's the BSD way of doing things
but they're still all posix-ish
however, consider this
fuck that
it actually works decently well
it's nice that the windows terminal app supports bash tabs if you want them
but it is what it is
lol i like the quake3 style terminal dropdown you get with windows+`
I've still never installed it honestly
you and most people
and that's fine
honestly, if you are content and happy with how windows does everything? congratulations!
I'm more tolerant than content
the only difference I actually notice between windows versions is the UI
for example, doing docker on anything that isn't linux, fucking sucks
it may not suck for all use cases ๐
7->10->11 each release became a lot nicer to use for programming things
7 was awful compared to 11
seems like it! I like what powershell opens up in terms of scripting
and they're at least making progress on moving things out of control panel into the settings app
this is what a settings app should be ๐
-shrug-
honestly watching my coworkers use wsl sometimes the grass looks greener on the windows side these days
I'll probably use wsl to decide if I actually want to use linux as a daily driver

the only thing I need windows on is my gaming pc at home
you mean you don't want to bash your head against proton?
they forgot a gig
oh I don't expect them to actually hit 2gb
but imagine how slow my 1 gigabit internet was
Nice upload though
time to become a server
you are getting scammed if you pay for 2gbit but only get 1
unfortunately it is what it is
Is that wired?
And is it a cat6 cable
If it's just cat5e you'll only get a gig anyway
I have cat6 cable
my mobo is able to handle 2.5gbit net and my router is from the ISP, rated for such load
henceforth the issue is not on my end
it's on their infrastructure
Oof
I forgot that was a thing, maybe I do want to bash my head against it
Uh oh
wtf
So I'm looking to upgrade my PC. I know what I need (DDR4, 2 slots available (currently at 32GB) and can hold up to 128 GB) and I'm just seeing which ones are good, which ones to avoid etc.
@deep sapphire was told to ping ya
@hard drift help risky make sure he buys the right ram
The only thing I got so far is avoid Mushkin but Corsair's good
Well what is good for speed/gaming?
3600MHz CL16 used to be the price performance sweet spot but as manufacturing is moving more towards DDR5 you're lucky to get 3600MHz CL18 for a decent price, it'll probably be dual ranked too
My computer is a bit old, idk if the one I use atm can use DDR5 (unless it doesn't matter not super tech savvy)
I just googled my computer's specs and it said DDR4
everything I said pertains to DDR4

I just mean that DDR4 is in its phase out stage
So I can still use DDR5?
no
Okay
what capacity are you looking at?
3600 or 3200
i think in terms of latency that's about the same as 3600MHz C18
what kinda cpu is your computer using?
should be fine
AMD Ryzen 7 5800 8-Core Processor
Is that it?
that's it
I got it like 3 years ago
are you overclocking the ram? like do you use xmp profiles?
I have never overclocked it
It'd melt it in the heat
This is more of just for fun but I don't want to get something and it be a paperweight lol
by default it uses ddr4 3200
are you adding to what you already have?
Yep
what do you already have?
actually, if it's easier might wanna go download cpu-z and then check the 'spd' tab
it'll tell you exactly what you have
should look something like that
but yea, chances are if you're not planning to use xmp, you could buy whatever your machine already has, or just get something similar to whatever it has
not much point in going more expensive because your system is just going to run it all at the slowest of the mix
This is mine atm
if you're just gaming and already have 16gb you won't really see much gain
So just get 2 sticks of 16 then?
have you actually been running out of ram?
And does it need to be the same or can I mix-match it because idk if I need to specifically get a Kingston
Close to yes
you can mix-match, it only matters if you overclock
he's on xmp 2.0
oh
?
Idk what that even means
open your task manager, select the memory tab and share
that makes me think it
either way
ez
no xmp
what game?
i have discord and chrome open
That's with only 2 things open
you have plenty of ram though, 32gb is enough
Let me boot up 14
do you have a billion tabs open
post your processes and sort by memory usage
This was much bigger yesterday
also, caching is a thing. if your computer is using a lot of memory it doesn't necessarily mean you're out of memory
Like near the ceiling
I don't think you need to buy ram, you have 32gb, that's plenty
...okay I'm just writing this off as just my computer having a meltdown yesterday
jesus I have ac valhalla running and it's using under 6gb ram
unless windows gives you a low ram warning i think you're fine
windows must be prefetching hard on your machine or you have malware
I'm thinking the former is most likely true
if I were you I wouldn't buy anything and just keep an eye on it
Probably fair
windows using a lot of ram isn't necessarily bad anyway
unused ram is wasted ram
it's only a problem if you run out
if you need to use more pop open some Chrome tabs
900MB for one tab over here
it's fine we dealt with it

Dell currently has a sale on its Alienware R15 pre-built gaming PCs, so we decided to take another look. This is using the company's updated and refreshed design, but as far as refreshes go, the changes are relatively focused: It's all about the cooling. We were originally going ...
fwiw, if you open task manager, do you have any processes named search, windows indexing, search indexing, or w/e?
most of the time when i was having memory hogging issues, it was because that damn process decided it wanted to take every bit available while it was running
Search Indexing appears a lot
that's the one that's going to kill your memory hard when it decides to run
iirc there's minimal impact to disabling it, other than searches taking a bit longer to run
Something that's taking a lot of WMI Provider Host
lmao stuffing a 13900k in that case
oh for fuck sake
fuck steve
he thinks advertising 49c->39c as a 20% improvement is misleading because if you acckkkkshuualy use kelvin it's only 3%
come on steve now you're just looking for excuses to bash the fucking company
he is right about dB being logarithmic though ๐
I like seeing Alienware get drilled
that is my opinion of dell as a company
Idk how these cases thatre clearly of a form factor made in 2005 still being used in high end systems today
But you've got to squeeze margin somewhere, I guess
compared to ripping off taxpayers selling the gov precisions and optiflexes
they probably don't make a ton ripping parents off with these
It's still pretty awful
yea we could go into how predatory their sales tactics are too
like their warranty sales
Most people are better off paying the markup elsewhere
Ah, yeah
They charge you for shit they say is free
Or add hidden charges in the checkout
i love how the hard drive is on a sled but the connectors are not built into the sled
And/or sneak in subscriptions
Dell is repurposing tooling made for low cost casing by slapping on molded plastic to make the facade look somewhat appealing to Timmy looking for his first gaming pc
They're telling their engineers to somehow fit their designs around the shitty form factors they still think is somehow a good idea in 2023
But it doesn't matter because they're going to get sales, I guess
they used that all the way up to the r13 i think

the thing I wonder is if/how this actually saves them $$
like I really doubt it does at this point
Or something stupid
i think they sunk cost fallacy'd themselves into that situation
The only good thing you can say about these are that the power supplies aren't actually dogshit, but that's about it
I wouldn't be surprised
i wonder how many rmas are saved by the gpu support system
also the machine is new?! and.. it's.. got a used gpu!?
yikes
i miss when they just used standard motherboards
peak cpu core temp of 97c while playing a warhammer benchmark lol
to be fair, it is a 13900k
also a $4k machine shouldn't have 2 ram slots -_-
the keyboard/mouse are also pathetic for a $4k machine lol
ahahah i used the same term
Most optiflex and precision have that stupid layout
I forgot how but I managed to rip the sata power connector off a hard drive in that case
I thought it was just me until I saw someone complain about the exact same thing happening to them lol
it was probably dell being like we paid for this tooling 10 years ago and by the gods we're going to milk it
since could swear I saw that in p4 optiplexes
(I'm still looking for a prime dos rig with dvi out for ease of capture without using a vga upscaler)
yea it's funny because thinking back
when I was in middle school I somehow ended up spending a lot of my time fixing the school's old donated computers
a lot of them were dell 486s
those things had utterly atrocious cases
and the dells of the early 2000s when they cribbed the micron tower design? those were awful too
they have a long standing history of making terrible cases
it's funny because the situation was the same back then, too. most of the white box companies used off the shelf cases from like, enlight, inwin, antec, enermax, etc
intentionally picking older case brands not lian-li or corsair or coolermaster ๐
those were always aimed at DIY PC customers anyway
!hank
!hank
i'm getting furry vibes
yay!
one of these days you're gonna make another discord heheh
.. just don't make it work like teams
you missed my rant yesterday
LOL
oh lord
you didn't just work on teams
you're the dude that invented teams aren't you
https://www.asus.com/motherboards-components/graphics-cards/proart/proart-rtx4080-16g/ heavily considering getting my sister this since there's a GPU that needs replacing... barring the fact that it's an RTX 4080
small and has a good amount of clearance between the fans and the glass in a Y60
probably yeah but I haven't dabbled in open loop in forever
oh right
like this
theres also
the aorus xtreme waterforce
and suprim liquid from msi
but the cheapest are the inno3D ones from what I see
at least here
yeah I do not recommend water cooled GPUs unless you like doing maintenance
but
they are the smallest
yeaaaahhhhh
almost the same price as the more expensive models like the strix and suprim
from what I've heard the aero OC is a good model too if you are looking for quality
but its a chonker
I liked my gigabyte card
Hey guys a friend of mine is thinking of buying a pc set but it seems a bit cheap can someone check the specs and see if it would run ff14? Thats the main game she wants to play on it
This is the set shes thinking of getting
It has integrated graphics so i couldnt say for sure
I also wondered if it would be an option for her to buy this and an extra graphics card so she doesnt have to use the integrated one?
Maybe that would work
i am not seeing the motherboard to know if you can upgrade the video card. i dunno the pcie slots it has. the integrated graphics means it basically doesn't have a video card. you would be running at the lowest possible video processing and that is not good
also i don't know what form factor the motherboard is
or the case
uhh
that computer is garbage, sorry to say
for the price especially
750 quid for that???
it looks like a pcie slot but no idea what speed it is also i dunno if the case is big enough to fit the video card
can u send me something you recommend for that price
well first things first: not a prebuilt
i don't think they can build a pc
they cant
they just want something to play ff14 on
nothing more
so please without being snobby just be helpful
just have a small pc repair shop build it for you
here ill look for something
thank you
prebuilts are fine
shes not looking for anything of "value" man
she just wants something to play the game on
for a decent price
no elden ring max graphics ray tracing beast
budget?
you can take parts and take them to a local pc repair shop to build it for you
for like 50bucks? it depends
i would choose entry level amd
amd is cheaper and in some generations better than intel
yeah but this is NA..
It doesn't
i dunno much about uk or wherever
what the websites are
or stores
do you have something similar to a best buy? you can walk in and they have a kiosk to build computers that they ship to you
with a guy that understands more or less the products
Part List - AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, Radeon RX 6650 XT, Fractal Design Core 1000 USB 3.0 MicroATX Mid Tower
monitor
there
damn that looks pretty good
Part List - AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, Radeon RX 6650 XT, Corsair 4000D Airflow ATX Mid Tower
changed case
but yeah
just take this
to a local pc shop
to build it for you
you went with a micro motherboard?
i dont think she needs a big one
they are on a budget
ok
its "good enough" for the specs of the rest of the system
i think this will play ffxiv
more than well
thank you
oh 1080
aka 160+ fps
the display is good for how low the price is
its an IPS display as well
so the game will look prettier
there are monitors 1440p for like
300 quid that are good
but its outside the budget
the mobo has quickflash
also someone will have to build it looks like
you can update the bios without needing to even boot
ye
they have to take it to a local pc shop to put it together
hopefully they know someone that will not charge them out of their ass for simple work like this
well in the usa that is exactly what they do. i don't know about the uk
im in greece and my friend took 20euro to change mobo, cpu and cooler
anyone know a good site for UK pc parts?
amazon
they all look so sketchy lol
oh yeah fair
or the UK version of geizhals
iirc this is also one of the better retailers
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/
Leading the way in bespoke PC systems and PC gaming, any and all of your components & peripherals needs are met with our vast range of products and services.
well as i know nothing about uk pc buying i will go back to the other room i was in
I wasn't trying to be snobby, im somewhat blunt and cut my sentences short which can come off as bad to those not familiar with me, sorry.
its just that I see prebuilts like that and flare up a bit cause they take advantage of the unwillingly ignorant and charge them out of their asses for shit parts they couldn't sell
but that is why tech nerds exist

https://www.amazon.co.uk/KOORUI-Compatible-Adjustable-Mountable-DisplayPort/dp/B0BZ3PN9MJ/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1EW1BYIBI2251&keywords=Koorui%2B24E3&qid=1690113378&sprefix=koorui%2B24e3%2Caps%2C310&sr=8-3&th=1 if you can go over budget a bit, I would consider this as well, 1440p is better than 1080p
idk if the sale is a real sale or a fake one though
amazon loves fake sales

I basically just go wherever is cheapest
Scan would probably be my go to though
Pcpartpicker is pretty good
ok so just for reference (shes probably going with the one u sent) but she had also found this https://www.currys.co.uk/products/pcspecialist-vortex-g30-gaming-pc-intel-core-i3-gtx-1650-512-gb-ssd-10236924.html @real edge
8gigs of ram is also no-no
the GPU tends to be the most expensive part of a PC
cause it is the one doing the core legwork of running games for you
so
if you swap out the GPU it will be expensive
like, 200quid or so for a new one that is actually decent
then ud be going over budget
i mean she isnt thinking of upgrading it right away
but like later on
in a few months
just something with a decent start
40quid for 16 gigs of ram
or so
basically for that prebuilt
CPU: OK
everything else: needs upgrading
to give you an idea
my 6 year old gpu which was midrange back then is better than what they are selling here
and the GPU I picked in pcpartpicker is twice as fast or a bit more than my current one
should give you an idea as to the scale of what I am talking about
I want to guide people in the right direction in regards to stuff like this cause its very easy to fall into pitfalls in this industry with all of the marketing
its brutal when someone doesn't know
I've seen people blow 3k quid on pcs that cost less than 2k

that one is actually good
that is the proper price for stuff like that
Not sure if it comes with a windows license but that is easily solved if you're willing
the only thing I do not trust
is the PSU
im not familiar with the brand at all
I would make the jump to the bequiet one for sure if it was me
80 plus bronze at least but yeah could do better
oh im willing
im willing
exploits hwid
Compared to current prices, is a Asus Strix Scar 18 worth it for a mobile battlestation? Or is it a ripoff?
make all your computers join your own domain and then lock them down and put software on a whitelist
be your own draconian IT sysadmin
then analyze your own metrics
it would have been easier to just keep your stuff entirely separate
Mr. Burns has a security system that turns out to be worthless.
Seems like a good chassis with good cooling, just expect it to have some of the issues that most other gaming laptops generally have
i.e, don't expect it to run on battery for long at all-- it might be a bit noisy at full load etc
!hank
probably the apple chip
Apple sauce chips

Yeah that's expected since the battery is more of a PSU than an actual battery. Desktop replacement without replacing the wall socket power, at least I can take it and use it anywhere compared to a tower.
doom is near

hey I have that card except the 4090
out of curiosity
what vram and gpu temps are you getting?
actually idk if vram temps can be measured using normal tools like hwmonitor
or msi afterburner
like 65c to 70c
I dunno what my vram temps are I dont look at that just the GPU
Same

competancy crisis is real
It's got to be some sort of anti-cheat thing
Like it could constantly scan your inventory and stash at all times
for anything invalid or duped
why the fuck is Elon liking X so much?
I bet his favorite song is X gon give it to ya
People used to wonder why he seemed to be trying so hard to appeal to 13 year olds
Turns out he is one
Does he also stomp and whine when he doesn't get something he wants?
Yes
And he keeps pretending to know about shit when he really does not
His little bit of internet fame really went to his head and turned him back to a 13yo
don't mention the emerald mine!
lol, lmao even https://twitter.com/technollama/status/1683519264676880393
And the icing on the cake: Microsoft owns a trademark for X. So Musk has destroyed a loved and strong brand, for potential years of litigation, and potentially no brand. https://t.co/OztqYGeIMK
is he planning to destroy twitter and then blame it on the previous twitter lawyers for forcing him to pay a big price for twitter or what??
i am surprised he doesn't even has his own lawyers
like, this is supposed to be before you change trademark
funny that the registration renewal acceptance was this july 18th
https://tsdr.uspto.gov/documentviewer?caseId=sn76041368&docId=ORC20030304054014&linkId=20#docIndex=0&page=1
How does Microsoft have a trademark on x though
this trademark is specifically for the xbox X mark
as specified in the trademark documentations
https://tsdr.uspto.gov/documentviewer?caseId=sn76041368&docId=ORC20030304054014&linkId=20#docIndex=3&page=1
what is confusing me a bit, if this is about the mark/logo of the X for xbox, or if it is just the name X.
Iโd assume itโs the Xbox x
X is also a great movie that came out last year
And itโs just a letter
even found this, even twitter has to win a fight trademark "Tweet"
Los Angeles โ Two and a half years after initially attempting to trademark the word โTweetโ, Twitter has finally been awarded exclusive rights to the trademark by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. It all started when Twittad, a Des Moines, Iowa-based startup which is the largest advertising platform on Twitter, grabbed the word [โฆ]
and elon want's to call "Tweets" to "X's"
the amount of X's he loves more than what he tries to give to his ex's.
U3011
in my experience, the nest webapp is buggy and only works correctly in google chrome ๐
because of course it does
also: the mobile app works way the fuck better on android phones
because of course it does
to be fair, I'm not sure why an iphone user would use nest stuff, they'd probably just get random chinese crap that has all sorts of security issues "but it's HomeKit certified!" sooo ya
-recalls the scandal with Eufy cameras-
Noooooo my walled garden ecosystem is impenetrable to bad actors
hey at least the shitty eufy cams are following a published standard, which is more than I can say for google nest
the only good thing I can say about nest is that as long as you have a reliable internet connection, it'll work
the software may be frustrating, and everything has to phone home directly to google, they very heavily discourage you from doing things like home automation (with things outside their ecosystem) with their stuff
and also if you want to have a screen showing all your cameras live? Yea nest doesn't do that
the nest webapp will kick you out after some period of time

i'd still use one now, only upgraded from my u2410 due to input latecny
Yeah it wasnโt the best but for a monitor from like 2011 it was still the shit
ccfl backlit
I remember the day I brought it home I was like holy shit
I went from a 21โ 1680x1050 to that 30โ sexy beast

Battlefield 3 never looked so good
fuckin 1680x1050
i had one of those in 07 or so, shortly after they were releasing 20-22" 1080p displays
surely this will be proof to his fanboys that Elon really isn't that smart and is a pretty terrible businessman
right? right??

I have a dell IPS that still does pretty well for a 10 year old panel
Question to any of yall and does ps5 works with ipv 6 ?
it should given ipv6 is old as fuck at this point
as far as i know it doesn't support ipv6 only connections
i thought it was the newest
im trying to connect my ps5 to my new net with t mobile
and saying the connection maybe weak but my pc is superb
make sure you're connecting to the 2.5 signal, not 5
2.5 has a lower base signal strength, but greater obstacle penetration
the other issue might be that sony skimped out on the network stack again and the ps5 wifi is just absolute garbage to begin with
ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
it's been available in network devices since at least mid 2000's (I have a dlink ipv6 ready router in my trash electronics box) but implementing it has taken forever since too many things will never be updated software wise
atm im talking to my net support
ipv 6 i was thinking it is the newest one unless i got the ipv what ever name is wrong saying this here
how do i do that and atm i have been transfered to the specialist
!hank
first time i've done that in months
!hank
i fixed it
it is fixed
I canโt connect to ffxiv on my ps5!
Internet is fine, when I test the network connection on my ps5 it says itโs connecting
But I canโt get on ffxiv
it might be funny SE routing things or it's your method of connection
everyone keeps saying to use wired so might as well start with saying if you're using wired/wireless to begin with
Iโm using wireless!
So I should just check back in a few hours to see if itโs resolved?
Iโm not sure if I have any cables ๐ but Iโll check back! Because the internet is working just fine - I can still watch hbo on my ps5
being able to play videos, doesn't mean you can get to the ff14 servers, not like they both live in the same place.
could be your ISP being fucky, or one of the 20 hops between your ISP and the ff14 servers, who are at fault.
A not quite accurate analogy is that HBO is in Washington, SE is in California, but thereโs bumper to bumper traffic or a bad accident on the way to California causing problems
Just because you can drive to Washington without a problem doesnโt mean the same for other routes
@deep sapphire AMD bros taking another L

They knew they took the L when they bought one
the most important series are not affected
this only affects processors with graphics in them, or pro series, or 3000 series
so 5800x3d and the like are not vulnerable
microsoft already pushed out an update to mitigate the flaw as well
nice bloatware
thats because Dell submits AWCC to Microsofts Automatic updates service, and makes it install if an appropriate device is detected.
so thats dell being overzealous
imo, vendors should only provide Drivers, not full software to install automatically through windows update
which fortunately most only do just that.
oh no
if you want to stop it youll basicelly need to tell windows to stop installing manufacturer apps for your whole computer
well you dont need to gpedit it
its a system setting
but sure that will also work
i turn that setting off on all new computers
"manufacturers apps"
is what it falls under
ASUS armoury crate, comes from the motherboard
thats something you disable in teh bios
always has been
Does that Alienware thing actually do anything bad though?
Existing is bad enough
Some things you just have to tolerate if they aren't harmful
yeah I turned off the stupid Gigabyte installer
took my PC offline while installing GPU, motherboard, and other drivers
msi only recently added that to my b450 tomahawk bios
