dreamy chasm
#

They took it to the titanic

spring raven
#

The company specifically runs tourist trips to the Titanic's wreck I think

dreamy chasm
#

It doesn't seem like it was built to do so

#

Oh

#

Skull emoji

astral ridge
#

5 people

The CEO of the company was the pilot
1 British-Pakistani businessman and his son
A French maritime expert

#

And..

dreamy chasm
#

I feel bad for the kid

spring raven
#

But there's no way they survived

#

It's tragic but

#

Accidents that deep in the ocean

#

The pressure differential would kill them instantly

dreamy chasm
#

Haven't most expeditions there so far been on remote controlled craft

astral ridge
#

And British aviation guy

spring raven
#

we've been doing manned expeditions to the wreck since the 90s iirc

astral ridge
#

Yeah

spring raven
#

This was specifically a tourist expedition to the wreck

dreamy chasm
#

I see.

astral ridge
#

Yes

#

Well, idk about the research guy but you know

spring raven
#

Kinda terrifying to look at the company's website about the expedition now

astral ridge
#

“It is not known whether the Titan is at the surface, where a rescue mission would be more straightforward once it is found, or submerged. If it is deep underwater, a rescue plan is still taking shape.”

glossy ravine
#

As much as I'd like to go. "Haha rich people dumb"

This entire thing was a massive red flag and nobody should have gotten in that death trap of a sub.

astral ridge
#

Well, the people who did (other than the kid) have all done this stuff a lot so idk

#

But yeah seems that way

spring raven
#

People underestimate just how dangerous the ocean can be, especially going that deep

glossy ravine
#

You'd think, for paying a quarter million big ones, they could have a submarine that wouldn't be running off a fucking video game controller.

astral ridge
#

Oh hey one of em went to the bottom of the Mariana Trench

glossy ravine
#

The ocean is a scary, watery void.

astral ridge
# spring raven People underestimate just how dangerous the ocean can be, especially going that ...

I assume this guy knows -

“Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a French maritime expert who has been on over 35 dives to the Titanic wreck site.”

“During two decades in the Navy, he was a mine-clearing diver, a deep-sea diver, and a submarine pilot. That experience led him to work for IFREMER, a publicly funded French maritime research institute, where he was in charge of its submarine exploration crafts during early expeditions to the Titanic wreck. His first dive to the Titanic was in July 1987, about two years after the wreck was discovered.”

#

Maybe

spring raven
#

You know what this reminds me a lot of, is the industry that's popped up around Everest tourism

astral ridge
#

Do people still do Everest much?

glossy ravine
#

Like. The ocean is a horrible way to go out.

spring raven
#

There's a lot of rich people with more money than sense and with minimal climbing skills who hire companies that will get them to the top of Everest

astral ridge
#

Maybe this has changed a lot since I knew about it

spring raven
#

And then they get into trouble and either get themselves killed or get other people killed in attempts to rescue them

glossy ravine
#

Yeah, people perishing on the climb is expected.

spring raven
astral ridge
#

That doesn’t make it possible

#

Hmm

#

Last I knew they still couldn’t get any of the many, many bodies out

glossy ravine
#

Hell, they are used as guideposts

spring raven
astral ridge
#

Which personally once I knew that I was like - “never’

spring raven
#

It happens all the time.

#

Everest is extremely commercialized.

astral ridge
#

Ohhh

#

Wait I think I know what you are talking about now

spring raven
#

"must not be too hard, this company says they can get me up there even as a novice climber"

glossy ravine
#

Like. The climb to Top Everest is lethal. Especially nearing the top where air is so thin that you need oxygen tanks/masks

astral ridge
#

For local logistics companies and the government of Nepal, Everest is big business. A typical spot on a commercial team costs anywhere from $40,000 to $100,000 depending on the level of service and the expertise of the outfitter.

astral ridge
#

I meant I thought it was too hard for someone to baby someone else through it

#

Apparently - it is not

spring raven
#

Oh haha

#

yeah it's a massive business both for the local government and for companies who want to take advantage of rich thrill seekers

#

Feels a lot like the Titanic thing

astral ridge
#

Oh wow - it takes months to climb blobsweats

#

Yeah sorry I was thinking you meant like -

“They can just fly em up to the top now” or something LUL

Also til it has a 1.2% fatality rate

spring raven
#

Winds too strong and air too thin to really do that tbh

minor hollow
#

they should skydive onto everest

spring raven
#

Helicopters have a lot of trouble operating at that altitude

minor hollow
#

with a snowboard

#

but yeah life is so unsustainable at the top of everest that the bodies don't even really decompose

#

they just mummify

spring raven
#

yep, what Fade said earlier about using dead bodies as signposts is 100% accurate

#

It's too dangerous to try to recover them

minor hollow
#

they should fulton recovery them

#

ala metal gear

#

lmao

#

but yeah i had my exposure. i was a pretty avid boulderer before suffering a knee injury

#

but in bouldering gyms

#

then some of my friends did outdoors bouldering

#

i went with them a few times

#

hated it

#

then like, 2 months after they started, one of them missed the crashpad and shattered his wrist

#

only nice, comfy padded indoor areas for me

#

if that makes me soft, so be it

dreamy chasm
#

I don't think this is the issue here lol

minor hollow
#

yeah but this is a cheap one

#

imagine dying because the guy tasked on air support trying to drone strike the people ambushing you had a madcatz

dreamy chasm
#

That wasn't the point they were making

spring raven
#

I feel like it's indicative of the approach this company took

#

Planning an expedition to one of the most dangerous places on the planet? Sure, let's use a $40 video game controller. What could go wrong?

minor hollow
#

well i would say that it feels very unlikely that the submersible was designed around the controller as well

#

there's no way it was the ideal control method

spring raven
#

spend more money on better equipment? Why would we do that? It would cut into our profits!

golden stream
#

Eh it has 2 facets here
One is: why bother creating a custom nani tf control scheme for just ONE thing when there is on-the-shelf solution
Second is: why le logitech

astral ridge
#

I mean, I agree with you.

But the CEO, it’s his company. He was on it.

So hopefully he thought I was safe enough (or he was suicidal)

#

(Or an idiot)

spring raven
astral ridge
#

Or, who knows.

I’m sure we will find out eventually what happened

minor hollow
#

i think this was an off the shelf partial solution

#

shoehorned into being the off the shelf solution

golden stream
#

Prob likely they have a deal w logi then logi be like "f control scheme here controller, take it else we dip"

minor hollow
#

why would logi make a deal with them

golden stream
#

The layout is nice tho but man it is STIFF

minor hollow
#

they have zero presence

golden stream
#

shrug

#

Who know

minor hollow
#

there's no gain from "we're partnered with this company that takes 20 customers a year"

#

anyone seeing that ad would be "literally who"

golden stream
#

Eh ngl I kinda wander that, even their components aren't made in US

minor hollow
#

i mean for logitech

#

what's the gain

astral ridge
#

….

Is this Logitech thing from like, real news or social media news

sly elk
#

Imagine if the CEO saw the news about the logitech controller and was like
MiqoteDepressed
and then quit

minor hollow
#

there's an image of the ceo of the sub company holding a logitech controller inside the sub

sly elk
#

a minimum viable sumarine

minor hollow
#

judging by the ex employee

#

sounds like it wasnt minimally viable

sly elk
#

some of the time it works all of the time

astral ridge
#

Yep it’s a controller

sly elk
#

and make a sub that doesn't kill its occupants

#

(that is some incredibly dark humor, I'm sorry)

minor hollow
#

trial and error baby

sly elk
#

I feel like the controller was the least of their problems

minor hollow
#

most likely yes

sly elk
#

was it a problem? Yes sure

minor hollow
#

controller isn't gonna make you spring a leak

astral ridge
#

Yeah, lots of things use controllers anyway

sly elk
#

was it a good indicator that their submarine was slapdash at best? also yes

spring raven
#

yeah there were bigger issues for sure

sly elk
#

but you could solve the "controller might fail" bit by just keeping a spare

#

all I know is when it comes to safety critical stuff, even if you do everything right sometimes the stars align and people get killed... so it's less surprising that someone did a slapdash job and people might be getting killed 😦

#

iirc the navy does use xbox controllers for submarine periscopes

#

but that's generally not a life-or-death tool

astral ridge
#

thonk since lots of stuff, even military uses game controllers.

I should start a business that just takes controllers, puts them in a tougher looking shell, and charge $15,000 each for “military/industrial advanced tactical control inputs”

sly elk
#

they probably already do that

minor hollow
#

so toughbook

#

for controllers?

astral ridge
#

Yeah!

minor hollow
#

they'll still get stick drift

#

lmao

late basalt
#

Just saw this, but nah, it’s a problem relating to how underpowered the laser head actually is for the material. A heat sink material wouldn’t help if the laser doesnt have enough penetration power in the first place tbh. To put it in perspective, the amount of time it took to burn out that bookmark is long enough that i could have probably patterned out 10-20 of them with “guide lines” for manually cutting them out

sly elk
#

the $15,000 controller is made on a contract that they must maintain service parts forever and also they keep track of the origin of every screw, drop of solder, etc from the origin, and keep those records forever

odd sand
minor hollow
#

it sounds like they went bare minimum on everything

#

cut a lot of corners for redundancies/tolerances

astral ridge
sly elk
#

yep

#

which is CRAZY

#

I remember way back when they did the documentaries

#

they used a submarmine on a tether

#

why weren't they doing something like that here?

late basalt
odd sand
#

An emergency transponder would have its own internal battery

minor hollow
#

whenever you hear about these things you find out they cheaped out somewhere

astral ridge
#

I’m still not convinced the guy cut THAT many corners on his own sub

odd sand
#

What crush depth? They were on the bottom of the ocean with the shipwreck...

sly elk
astral ridge
#

Maybe but, well we will find out (or not)

sly elk
#

yea it's possible the ballast tank malfunctioned and they're stuck down below

minor hollow
#

they have to be out of air by now though right?

late basalt
#

And fwiw, most of those submersibles dont carry a lot of oxygen, so odds are it’s a recovery, not rescue, at this point

#

If ever

odd sand
#

The reason military subs have a much shallower operating depth is they have a much larger internal volume to them. These subs work bc they're like 12-18" thick with an internal volume of like 30sqft or less or something

lone zealot
#

I am not holding out hope for that sub. If it is the worst case scenario and there was a hull breach then there would be nothing left. If the hull is fine and that sub cannot go back up to the surface there are no rescue options. Most rescue subs max out at 1000m

astral ridge
#

What kind of transponder does something like that use thonk

minor hollow
#

getting kursk vibes

sly elk
#

The submersible had a four-day oxygen supply when it put to sea around 6 a.m. Sunday, according to David Concannon, an adviser to OceanGate Expeditions, which oversaw the mission.

astral ridge
#

Assuming that didn’t break of course

minor hollow
#

assuming all tanks were full

lone zealot
#

@astral ridge It would be a standard transpoder that all naval ship have. Problem is that its so deep at the titantic the radio signal would be lost

minor hollow
#

assuming no one is panicking and consuming air at a higher rate due to stress

late basalt
sly elk
#

I wonder if they give a briefing about all these thigns

astral ridge
#

Oh?

late basalt
#

It would be marine-specialty

#

Look up the guy that did the Seven Deeps excursion

odd sand
#

It would be a sonar pulse

minor hollow
#

seven deeps?

late basalt
#

He used several “drop anchors” at each spot to triangulate where the deepest points would be iirc

minor hollow
#

i've never heard of that

#

i only heard of the 5 deeps

#

where can i look it up

odd sand
#

Most likely there was either an electrical failure and its sitting down there like a rock or a material defect and it's a crushed can atm.

late basalt
#

Yea, it was the 5 Deeps one

lone zealot
#

@late basalt That is assuming that the builder didn't cheap out, but yeah you are correct

minor hollow
#

is it the guy with the naval outfit

late basalt
lone zealot
#

Electrical failure can mean loss of life support if there is no battery backup

minor hollow
#

electrical failure = no air

late basalt
#

They’d be able to break a valve for air

odd sand
#

In an ideal world you have a manual ballast release that given systems failure you could just drop that and float to the surface over X number of hours. But even if they had that, lacking an emergency transponder, you're a fleck of sand on the surface of the ocean

late basalt
#

heat is the issue

lone zealot
#

oh yeah, its frigging cold at that depth

minor hollow
late basalt
#

Even if everything was operating correctly, if the heaters eat shit, you’re going to die if you dont drop your weights ASAP

minor hollow
#

but redundancies aren't cheap

late basalt
#

A rescue wouldn’t come in time

odd sand
#

Most people lost overboard in the open ocean are never found. Those that are often say the rescuers circled very near them numerous times before finding them.

minor hollow
#

whoops wrong response

late basalt
#

You’d die of hypothermia before then

odd sand
#

I mean, it's cold but could be a lot worse: It can only be 33F/0.5C or something

late basalt
#

Biggest reason life jackets and lifeboats are hivis colors now

#

Well sure, just means you wouldn’t freeze to death haha

lone zealot
#

You know, its too bad that the Alvin cannot be sent out in time to help look

odd sand
#

With how popular a dive it is yeah, I'm surprised there are no other DSVs available

minor hollow
#

i didn't realize how crazy the 5 deeps guy was

#

i looked him up

#

he's
dived the deepest point in each of the five oceans
first person to dive challenger deep/mariana trench more htan once (15 times)
climbed the highest mountain on every continent
visited the north & south poles

astral ridge
#

Wow

odd sand
#

Well if you got the cash to hire a 2nd porter to carry nothing but extra oxygen tanks to make sure you don't die standing in line on the way down

minor hollow
#

it's still pretty wild even if you're banking on the work of the sherpas

odd sand
#

Even if I had the money at this point, I wouldn't bother. It's so commercialized now, and most of the people dying are simply bc they get stuck in TRAFFIC

sly elk

Artists are understandably concerned about the possibility that automatic image generators like Stable Diffusion will undercut the market for their work. #

(Of course that’s just one lawsuit, and it’s a pretty bad one)

austere socket
#

apart from that, everything seems to be a web app these days

sly elk
#

completely ignoring that, there's people who are very intolerant about differences like, how the minimize/maximize works, how command vs ctrl works

#

how programs don't necessarily exit when you close the only window open

#

the little naunces in how drag & drop differ

#

(on macos, if you drag a file on top of a folder, it'll pop open a finder window of that folder, and if you hover over another folder in the folder, it'll open that one.. etc.. windows doesn't do that)

#

my favorite is the whole

#

windows LOVES doing window snapping stuff

#

macos doesn't do that

#

windows is hardcore on wizards and hand holding

#

macos used to do none of that

#

i miss that about the older versions of OS X - they completely left you alone

#

they didn't nag you about OS updates or software updates or whatever

#

they didn't make you sign up for icloud or complain about icloud being low

#

the save dialog didn't act all weird and grumpy like it has for the past 10 years or so ><

#

it was particular jarring to compare windows xp to early mac os x

astral ridge
#

I kinda feel like everything has gotten less user friendly Sad

sly elk
#

windows XP was so in your face that when you plugged in a USB device it would

  1. play a sound
  2. tell you that you plugged in a device
  3. tell you that it was installing software for the device
  4. tell you whether that succeeded or failed.
(IIRC it'd steal focus every single time, too)
#

I've always found installing software on windows to be infuriating because the software installers would pop a new window every 5 seconds and steal focus doing it

#

in fact a lot of software on windows steals focus

#

Macs used to never do that, but Apple doesn't care anymore

#

now if I get a phone call, that stupid notification steals focus ;_;

austere socket
sly elk
#

(stealing focus == when you're typing and a new window pops open and all the keystrokes go to the new window)

austere socket
#

I just wanna make smol window beeg

sly elk
#

#

same as the windows version lol

austere socket
#

ah, the hidden button mewpaissa

#

I'll remember that next time I encounter my 1 weekly macbook

sly elk
#

back in the days

#

that button just made the window bigger, but not necessarily such that it took up the whole screen

austere socket
#

win11 has gotten insanely smooth about window snapping tho, better than I thought windows would ever get

sly elk
#

yea this is where

#

I could go on an unhinged rant about windows 11

austere socket
#

oh you're more than welcome mewpaissa

sly elk
#

I feel like I can't move a window around at all without it trying to maximize it or snap it

#

and these stupid things pop up everywhere

#

and this stupid thing

#

i bet there's a way to turn em off lol

astral ridge
#

What is that

austere socket
#

yeah they appear when you hover over maximise or go anywhere near an edge

sly elk
#

phew.

#

-turns it all off-

#

also this one

#

whoever invented that one

austere socket
#

it's like that game where you move the loop around the wire without touching the metal, lol

sly elk
#

if I could become CEO for the day I'd fire anyone who ever owrked on that feature

#

but at least they gave it an actual setting now

#

it used to be a registry hack to turn it off and it'd randomly turn back on after an OS update

austere socket
#

oh kyanche, I know something that you probably love about win11

sly elk
#

ahhh this is so nice, no more window snapping

#

I can use my computer like it's 2001 again ^_^

austere socket
#

sly elk
#

#

hey I'm used to macs, so that one never bugged me

#

I feel for the people who like the full size taskbar buttons with the window titles though

austere socket
#

true, but macs handle returning to a multi-window app much better

sly elk
#

the funny thing is, making new options while keeping the old ones unchanged was a MS trademark

#

How to do a clean reinstall of your drivers

Step 1: Download Device Driver Uninstaller.

Step 2: Download the newest driver from your graphics card manufacturers website: AMD and/or Nvidia.

Step 3: Disconnect your internet and restart your PC in safe mode.

Step 4: Run Device Driver Uninstaller and click on 'Clean and Restart' after you select your device type and GPU.

Step 5: After the PC restarts and you are disconnected from the internet, install the drivers you downloaded from Step 2.

Step 6: After you install them, restart your PC one final time and reconnect your internet.

What the actual fuck is this asinine change to intel branding?

"The most important changes include dropping the 'i' from the naming scheme and opting for a more straightforward Core 3, 5, and 7 branding structure for Intel's mainstream processors. The other notable inclusion, which is now officially confirmed, is that Intel will bifurcate the Core brand a bit and place its premium client products in their own category, using the new Ultra moniker."

late basalt
#

ok, i've got another dumb question. if i tie in the anode and cathode of an led to the same point on a wire, is that going to work as a parallel circuit, or not at all?

sly elk
#

If you connect the anode and cathode at the same point you won't get anything because there's no difference between potential. The electricity will take the path of least resistance, which is the piece of wire that they're touching.

#

now if you broke that parallel path or stuck a resistor or something on it, things change

#

this would work

late basalt
#

Totally forgot about the question. The idea would be to to have an indicator led (with appropriate resistor) on 3 different 12v branches that would show when power is active on those branches. Guess it’s just easier to tie them off to their own ground rather than try to keep them tied in

#

Good thing i have some 24awg strand lying around for it playdead

grim rock
#

Put the led in series with the branch

sly elk
#

^

#

if you were able to stick it on the wire you can just break the wire at the led

grim rock
#

You just need to make sure you're not burning it out

late basalt
#

Especially since at least two branches are going to be pulling at least 2-3 amps

grim rock
#

Not with the appropriate resistor, as you mentioned

late basalt
#

Yea, but then what’s the point of using it as an indicator? I’d be killing the voltage down the branch

#

That’s why i was thinking parallel, not series

grim rock
#

The thing is though

#

Parallel circuits can work independently. You can have an open in one path and it won't affect the other

#

What are you trying to do with the circuit exactly?

i really hate icloud/apple's photos app

at some point I tried to do a mass export but it was one of those "this is way too slow to even be useful" things, so I just went in the photos app 'library' folder and yanked everything out

#

but it screws with EXIF dateTimeOriginal fields :S

#

so stuff ends up kinda pooled together by the date my phone uploaded it to icloud

#

hmm no that doesn't make sense either

#

because like, there's 200 pictures with december 20, 2020 as the date

#

but then in the photos app they might have dates like december 21, 22, etc

#

ooo someone made a tool for using/manipulating photos' sqlite database. SWEET!

modern iris
#

So some bots use the autocomplete thing with their slash commands, but you can only have 25 options at a time whenever someone types something.

#

I wanted to pull all the items in FFXIV and make them autocomplete-able, but there's like 41000 of them going by XIVAPI.

#

So I went with loading a list of names and IDs of items that the bot uses to throw into a mapped collection from a file (because I really didn't want to pull from the API starting out), and filtered out choices based on whatever the user's typing and only showing 25 or less autocomplete text at a time.

#

And periodically running a cron job to update the collection with the API to keep things up to date.

#

All of this took me a week to figure out because I severely overestimated caching and rate limits. graha_sad

#
const focused = interaction.options.getFocused();
const dataset = interaction.client.datasets.get(this.data.name);
const choices = Array.from(dataset, ([key, value]) => ({ key, value }));

const filtered = choices.filter((choice) =>
  choice.value.toLowerCase().startsWith(focused.toLowerCase())
);

return await interaction.respond(
  filtered
    .map((choice) => ({ name: choice.value, value: choice.key }))
    .slice(0, 25)
);
modern iris
#

ASHehe At least with the latter, that's something I'll likely tweak it to once/if I start branching out past EN translations.

#

With the autocomplete thing-y, it won't let the users submit anything that goes out the item's name.
Like if someone were to type Gil, it'd accept that (or gIL, GiL, etc.).
But if they type Gils or something, it'll tell them to try again.

#

What it's really doing is taking the id of that item before making an API call, there's no key-value pair for Gils compared to Gil.
But yeah, eventually I want to take into account different languages but I fought with this for a week just in English. ASHehe

#

Oh and yeah the example I looked up for filtering did something where it assigned it to a result and returned that, I just get very code ninja-y sometimes. ASHehe

grim rock
#

well not necessarily unless theyre in the same spots

#

yea

#

the ports are on daughter cards

#

oh also sadly the 2nd set are just more usb-c ports lol 😄

i don't hate their decision though

grim rock
#

But a drill bit ain't so hard to use after your warranty is over..

sly elk
#

ah apple doesn't roll that way. Usually it's milled billet aluminum lol

#

idk if they're still doing that

#

but they sure liked doing it for a while

grim rock
#

Still, cheaper to cut out 2 than 4, insignificant pricing

#

And just a program being run

#

The only price difference is the time it takes to rout out the additional 2

#

Which is fairly insignificant, but more points of failure for inspection so a slightly higher cost

sly elk
#

yea but now they have to make and maintain a stock of 2 different back panels instead of 1

#

admittedly, they already make a ton of different variations for the imacs

grim rock
#

Ye

sly elk
#

my favorite is the keyboards, with the icing on the cake that you can only buy them as a service part, you can't just buy a blue keyboard from apple

grim rock
#

For them it's a small cost compared to profits

sly elk
#

so they make 7 colors of iMac (4 are also offered in the 2 usb port version)

grim rock
#

Hey, at least it's not a subscription yet

sly elk
#

for each of those 7 colors, they make a keyboard with touch ID and an extended keyboard with touch ID... in 16 languages....

#

some languages are completely different units, too. Not just different keycaps.

#

also for the cheap model there's a short keyboard without touch ID 😄

#

so they have 288 different keyboard SKUs

grim rock
#

Crazy

sly elk
#

also they offer the mouse and trackpad in the 7 colors. So another 14 SKUs.

grim rock
#

Is that for releases this year or overall in production?

sly elk
#

i think they came out last year

#

they haven't made a new model, but it wouldn't come with a new keyboard soo

#

short version

#

the trackpad is even more subtle because the only colored part is the trim around the edge

#

i actually wonder if they're just made to order

#

and they can ship them to a warehouse where they just snap the right color cover on the unit

#

that would explain why you can't just buy them off the website lol

wraith agate
#

Probably

#

Then again maybe he has a switch or a home router right next to his laptop

#

I literally can't imagine any other reason

grim rock
#

i think it was probably a test cable

wraith agate
#

It's not a real test cable unless it is 3m long

modest moss
#

I expect he was just practising crimping and wanted to waste as little cable as possible

grim rock
#

good luck, hopefully you do actually get some enjoyment from it

#

what are combo jacks?

#

ah

#

unrelated to that, but I do need to run an additional 15a circuit to the office

#

might just make it a 20, but I'm not looking forward to it

#

For some reason, this house's kitchen lights, some kitchen outlets, office, hall and a bedroom are all on a 15a circuit

#

i do not

#

bit frustrating because i told them the room would be an office when building it

wraith agate
#

I am interested in electronics

grim rock
#

yet they didn't run it on a separate circuit...

wraith agate
#

But I'm also more of a coder

#

Still I should learn this. Who knows when a robot apocalypse happens and I need to be able to craft EMP bombs lmao

grim rock
#

nah because i didn't explicitly say i needed it on a separate circuit so it's my mistake there. was my first build anyway. Learned a lot for the next house lol

wraith agate
#

Darn

grim rock
#

The only thing I'm not confident about is modifying the circuit breaker panel. So I'll get someone else to do it. Just not looking forward to paying for it lol. I'll have to see how the circuits are routed and if I can also break them apart to the panel to allow them to take on more load if needed

#

Bought this house at 22, not planning on making it my forever home but it's great for now

wraith agate
#

Ah yes, self-teaching robot that needs no human to be supervised

grim rock
#

it'll eventually be a rental

wraith agate
#

That's not how you prevent Misalignment

grim rock
#

Yeah, I moved from a high CoL state to low CoL

#

4 bedroom here was 280k in 2019

#

now its like 450k

#

but where i used to live, to get an equivalent would have been at least 700-900k

cerulean talon
wraith agate
#

I am looking at these prices like wow.... I'll never own a house because I make around $550 a month

cerulean talon
#

I feel weird these days looking at micros, and seeing C, and not ASM. 😦

wraith agate
#

I like C, I learned it in school, though I always preferred C++

cerulean talon
#

I completely skipped C until I was already working in tech, and even then, it was more to read than write.

grim rock
#

I was good at intro coding, but hated it. Not for me, kudos to you guys for actually being big brains with it

cerulean talon
#

Tbh, thinking about it, I learned syscalls before I learned C.

#

But that's syadmin life for you

#

Tbh, coding is mostly puzzle sovling imo.

#

The hard part is defining the puzzle, then you get to have the fun of solving it.

#

Defining the puzzle sucks.

wraith agate
#

Well, when I was young, I used to deal with Quake engine, which was C

cerulean talon
#

You kids and your having engines when you were younger!

wraith agate
#

That engine is a year older than me

cerulean talon
#

We wrote ASM both directions WITHOUT HOME KEYS.

wraith agate
#

Came out in 1996, while I did in 1997

#

Well no wait, I came out in 2014

cerulean talon
#

Tbh, that's aroung the time I was writing asm for pic's.

wraith agate
#

But my mom released me in 1997

cerulean talon
#

About the right timing though as you'd be a couple years later and those engines would be commonly available.

#

I kinda miss pics some days.

#

They were so simple, but so horrible.

wraith agate
#

Nowadays I'm trying to learn UE5, specifically blueprints while keeping coding to the things I can't do in blueps

cerulean talon
#

Haha.

#

I ended up taking a super quick look at BP's, but never dove em.

wraith agate
#

Tbh, blueps is pretty much the same as me typing stuffs, except I get to keep my finger tips

cerulean talon
#

Just make your fingertips out of iron.

#

It's the real answer.

wraith agate
#

True

#

Funny btw, apparently Amazon says my packages will arrive on July 1st

#

It won't because the moment they hand it over to local post, they won't touch it till Monday

#

Nope

#

Locals don't deliver on weekend

cerulean talon
#

Eh, ours can't decide if I'm getting stuff on july 17 or back on june 17.

#

So it's fun here atm.

wraith agate
#

I mean, it is coming from Deutschland so maybe they deliver it personally?

grim rock
#

DHL

wraith agate
#

Jeff Bezos comes personally to hand over my 4090

grim rock
#

If its by 3rd pt seller

#

If its by Amazon, probably just amazon

cerulean talon
#

Or you just do the smart thing and don't allow inbound network traffic on that vlan.

#

Which is what I'd do.

wraith agate
#

I think, well my bet is, it will be delivered by DHL

cerulean talon
#

I'd setup an inter-vlan bridge.

wraith agate
#

God I wish

#

If I was living in Canada, I'd have tits by now

cerulean talon
#

So you can have traffic from your main vlan, to your iot vlan, then your iot vlan can go the net, but people can't come in.

#

Oh, just use VPN's.

#

Like an adult. 😛

#

Or yeah, unifi the entire thing and use a unifi recorder/router combo.

wraith agate
#

Do you know how terrible it is to be a programmer and not have tits?

cerulean talon
wraith agate
cerulean talon
#

No thx, just more reasons to get fit and look better. 😄

#

That movie did feel a little too real with that description of humans tho.

wraith agate
#

I find it funny people consider AI to be future of writing code and stuff

cerulean talon
#

Honestly, it really could be.

#

The issue is that people don't really understand the hard part of coding, is knowing wtf to ask for.

#

The logic-y puzzle bits are perfect for a computer to work out.

wraith agate
#

Reminds me Hi-Fi Rush where everything is done by robots, including programming

cerulean talon
#

The hard part is telling the computer wtf you want it to do.

wraith agate
cerulean talon
#

Can you tell the difference between a perfect translation computer, and a human who can do the translation, if you give them the same inputs and they give you the same output?

wraith agate
#

As my teachers used to say, there's a difference between the computer doing what you programmed it do vs what you actually want it to do.

cerulean talon
#

We're not allowed to use copilot at work, and tbh, I don't really need it much for anything.

#

At this point the problems I'm solving tend to be in the space of "Oh god, copilot's never seen this before"

#

Or "Oh damn it, this is in a weird context space that's specific to our application due to legacy code"

#

See, golang.

#

😄

#

Jetbrains did an excellent job with test codegen, so you just have to fill in some data variables.

wraith agate
#

I'm in the space where AI is useless to me, because not even I know what the fuck I want to do

cerulean talon
#

That's sorta the reason that yes, AI can take over /programming/ but it can't take over the fact managers can't figure out wtf they want the program to do.

#

Which people do not realize programmers have to do.

wraith agate
#

I'm a video game designer but not the idea guy, I'm the actual video game designer

#

Currently I have three distinct ideas but I'm not sure which one to do first and what the core gameplay loop should be

cerulean talon
#

Yeah, I used to be the software-implementer, then I got product training

#

And now I'm the poor bastard who can implement and dissaemble bad requirements into an auctual product.

#

Don't get me wrong, pays fantastically

#

But it sucks some days.

#

It took a serious shift in 3rd party platforms to drive our first major user acqs.

#

Then ~things~ and ~people~ drove the major waves from there on out.

wraith agate
#

Some ideas I have would require like an entire studio, but at least a good 20-30 people

#

Being a solo indie dev is not that

cerulean talon
#

Sort-of? You take those ideas and break them down into core bits and pieces.

#

I can tell you that a single developer can often replace 10-15 people if they get good at understanding what the actual requirements are. 🙂

wraith agate
#

I think first I'm gonna try something that's feasible for me. Not the gameplay revolution I have in mind, but a good start to put my foot into the doorway

cerulean talon
#

Some stuff like art assets, models, etc, sure.

#

Those will absolutely need people, but if you think you need 20-30 devs, that's a question of scoping and "why"

wraith agate
#

Well mostly I need animators, modelers and sound people

#

I'm tone deaf

cerulean talon
#

Sorta.

wraith agate
#

Mostly

cerulean talon
#

You can build your core gameplay without any of that.

#

😄

dreamy chasm
#

I've nearly given up on trying to learn how to code

wraith agate
#

Which is one of the reasons why I suck at hi-fi rush

cerulean talon
#

There's a reason games in dev have super hacky fucking previz models.

wraith agate
#

Oh dw, core gameplay I can do

cerulean talon
#

Heck, go look at previz for movies. They don't have final models, or overyalys or anything like that.

wraith agate
#

I need people for those extras, I'm the technical type of person

cerulean talon
#

But it's enough to sell the idea to someone who /can/ provide you with the money to get the extra people.
