The company specifically runs tourist trips to the Titanic's wreck I think
5 people
The CEO of the company was the pilot
1 British-Pakistani businessman and his son
A French maritime expert
And..
I feel bad for the kid
But there's no way they survived
It's tragic but
Accidents that deep in the ocean
The pressure differential would kill them instantly
Haven't most expeditions there so far been on remote controlled craft
And British aviation guy
we've been doing manned expeditions to the wreck since the 90s iirc
Yeah
This was specifically a tourist expedition to the wreck
I see.
Kinda terrifying to look at the company's website about the expedition now
OceanGate Inc. is a privately held company that provides manned submersible assets and expertise for commercial, research and military applications.
“It is not known whether the Titan is at the surface, where a rescue mission would be more straightforward once it is found, or submerged. If it is deep underwater, a rescue plan is still taking shape.”
As much as I'd like to go. "Haha rich people dumb"
This entire thing was a massive red flag and nobody should have gotten in that death trap of a sub.
Well, the people who did (other than the kid) have all done this stuff a lot so idk
But yeah seems that way
People underestimate just how dangerous the ocean can be, especially going that deep
You'd think, for paying a quarter million big ones, they could have a submarine that wouldn't be running off a fucking video game controller.
Oh hey one of em went to the bottom of the Mariana Trench
The ocean is a scary, watery void.
I assume this guy knows -
“Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a French maritime expert who has been on over 35 dives to the Titanic wreck site.”
“During two decades in the Navy, he was a mine-clearing diver, a deep-sea diver, and a submarine pilot. That experience led him to work for IFREMER, a publicly funded French maritime research institute, where he was in charge of its submarine exploration crafts during early expeditions to the Titanic wreck. His first dive to the Titanic was in July 1987, about two years after the wreck was discovered.”
Maybe
You know what this reminds me a lot of, is the industry that's popped up around Everest tourism
Like. The ocean is a horrible way to go out.
There's a lot of rich people with more money than sense and with minimal climbing skills who hire companies that will get them to the top of Everest
HOW
Maybe this has changed a lot since I knew about it
And then they get into trouble and either get themselves killed or get other people killed in attempts to rescue them
Yeah, people perishing on the climb is expected.
Rich people.
That doesn’t make it possible
Hmm
Last I knew they still couldn’t get any of the many, many bodies out
Hell, they are used as guideposts
Sure it does. Companies crop up specifically to cater to them.
Which personally once I knew that I was like - “never’
Must not be as hard as I thought
Ohhh
Wait I think I know what you are talking about now
See, that's the mindset that leads to people dying on the climb.
"must not be too hard, this company says they can get me up there even as a novice climber"
Like. The climb to Top Everest is lethal. Especially nearing the top where air is so thin that you need oxygen tanks/masks
For local logistics companies and the government of Nepal, Everest is big business. A typical spot on a commercial team costs anywhere from $40,000 to $100,000 depending on the level of service and the expertise of the outfitter.
No, you misunderstand what I meant
I meant I thought it was too hard for someone to baby someone else through it
Apparently - it is not
Oh haha
yeah it's a massive business both for the local government and for companies who want to take advantage of rich thrill seekers
Feels a lot like the Titanic thing
Oh wow - it takes months to climb
Yeah sorry I was thinking you meant like -
“They can just fly em up to the top now” or something
Also til it has a 1.2% fatality rate
Winds too strong and air too thin to really do that tbh
they should skydive onto everest
Helicopters have a lot of trouble operating at that altitude
with a snowboard
but yeah life is so unsustainable at the top of everest that the bodies don't even really decompose
they just mummify
yep, what Fade said earlier about using dead bodies as signposts is 100% accurate
It's too dangerous to try to recover them
they should fulton recovery them
ala metal gear
lmao
but yeah i had my exposure. i was a pretty avid boulderer before suffering a knee injury
but in bouldering gyms
then some of my friends did outdoors bouldering
i went with them a few times
hated it
then like, 2 months after they started, one of them missed the crashpad and shattered his wrist
only nice, comfy padded indoor areas for me
if that makes me soft, so be it
People use game controllers to control military equipment all the time
I don't think this is the issue here lol
yeah but this is a cheap one
imagine dying because the guy tasked on air support trying to drone strike the people ambushing you had a madcatz
That wasn't the point they were making
I feel like it's indicative of the approach this company took
Planning an expedition to one of the most dangerous places on the planet? Sure, let's use a $40 video game controller. What could go wrong?
well i would say that it feels very unlikely that the submersible was designed around the controller as well
there's no way it was the ideal control method
spend more money on better equipment? Why would we do that? It would cut into our profits!
Eh it has 2 facets here
One is: why bother creating a custom nani tf control scheme for just ONE thing when there is on-the-shelf solution
Second is: why le logitech
I mean, I agree with you.
But the CEO, it’s his company. He was on it.
So hopefully he thought I was safe enough (or he was suicidal)
(Or an idiot)
Probably this
Or, who knows.
I’m sure we will find out eventually what happened
i don't think this was an off the shelf solution
i think this was an off the shelf partial solution
shoehorned into being the off the shelf solution
Prob likely they have a deal w logi then logi be like "f control scheme here controller, take it else we dip"
why would logi make a deal with them
The layout is nice tho but man it is STIFF
they have zero presence
there's no gain from "we're partnered with this company that takes 20 customers a year"
anyone seeing that ad would be "literally who"
Eh ngl I kinda wander that, even their components aren't made in US
….
Is this Logitech thing from like, real news or social media news
Imagine if the CEO saw the news about the logitech controller and was like

and then quit
there's an image of the ceo of the sub company holding a logitech controller inside the sub
I mean that's exactly what it is
a minimum viable sumarine
some of the time it works all of the time
Yep it’s a controller
now they must iterate
and make a sub that doesn't kill its occupants
(that is some incredibly dark humor, I'm sorry)
trial and error baby
I feel like the controller was the least of their problems
most likely yes
was it a problem? Yes sure
controller isn't gonna make you spring a leak
Yeah, lots of things use controllers anyway
was it a good indicator that their submarine was slapdash at best? also yes
yeah there were bigger issues for sure
but you could solve the "controller might fail" bit by just keeping a spare
all I know is when it comes to safety critical stuff, even if you do everything right sometimes the stars align and people get killed... so it's less surprising that someone did a slapdash job and people might be getting killed 😦
iirc the navy does use xbox controllers for submarine periscopes
but that's generally not a life-or-death tool
since lots of stuff, even military uses game controllers.
I should start a business that just takes controllers, puts them in a tougher looking shell, and charge $15,000 each for “military/industrial advanced tactical control inputs”
they probably already do that
Yeah!
Just saw this, but nah, it’s a problem relating to how underpowered the laser head actually is for the material. A heat sink material wouldn’t help if the laser doesnt have enough penetration power in the first place tbh. To put it in perspective, the amount of time it took to burn out that bookmark is long enough that i could have probably patterned out 10-20 of them with “guide lines” for manually cutting them out
the $15,000 controller is made on a contract that they must maintain service parts forever and also they keep track of the origin of every screw, drop of solder, etc from the origin, and keep those records forever
This is more damning than the controller memes bc ultimately if it performs to standard HID input it's fine. And probably not the only method of control. Why is there not an emergency transponder on it, preferably one that turns on automatically after X amount of time lacking pressing a "delay" button in case people are incapacitated?
yeah the problem that they don't know where it is is massive
it sounds like they went bare minimum on everything
cut a lot of corners for redundancies/tolerances
Hmm idk how that works with submersibles.
It’s mother ship lost contact about an hour and a half after it started
yep
which is CRAZY
I remember way back when they did the documentaries
they used a submarmine on a tether
why weren't they doing something like that here?
Probably hit crush depth and went pop
An emergency transponder would have its own internal battery
whenever you hear about these things you find out they cheaped out somewhere
I’m still not convinced the guy cut THAT many corners on his own sub
What crush depth? They were on the bottom of the ocean with the shipwreck...
ugh
Maybe but, well we will find out (or not)
yea it's possible the ballast tank malfunctioned and they're stuck down below
they have to be out of air by now though right?
And fwiw, most of those submersibles dont carry a lot of oxygen, so odds are it’s a recovery, not rescue, at this point
If ever
The reason military subs have a much shallower operating depth is they have a much larger internal volume to them. These subs work bc they're like 12-18" thick with an internal volume of like 30sqft or less or something
I am not holding out hope for that sub. If it is the worst case scenario and there was a hull breach then there would be nothing left. If the hull is fine and that sub cannot go back up to the surface there are no rescue options. Most rescue subs max out at 1000m
What kind of transponder does something like that use
getting kursk vibes
The submersible had a four-day oxygen supply when it put to sea around 6 a.m. Sunday, according to David Concannon, an adviser to OceanGate Expeditions, which oversaw the mission.
They have another 40 hours
Assuming that didn’t break of course
assuming all tanks were full
@astral ridge It would be a standard transpoder that all naval ship have. Problem is that its so deep at the titantic the radio signal would be lost
assuming no one is panicking and consuming air at a higher rate due to stress
Yea, but if there’s any fitting faults present at all, those depths water would easily infiltrate
I wonder if they give a briefing about all these thigns
Not quite, actually
Oh?
It would be a sonar pulse
seven deeps?
He used several “drop anchors” at each spot to triangulate where the deepest points would be iirc
Most likely there was either an electrical failure and its sitting down there like a rock or a material defect and it's a crushed can atm.
Yea, it was the 5 Deeps one
@late basalt That is assuming that the builder didn't cheap out, but yeah you are correct
is it the guy with the naval outfit
Electrical failure doesnt provide much hope of survival either tbh
Electrical failure can mean loss of life support if there is no battery backup
electrical failure = no air
They’d be able to break a valve for air
In an ideal world you have a manual ballast release that given systems failure you could just drop that and float to the surface over X number of hours. But even if they had that, lacking an emergency transponder, you're a fleck of sand on the surface of the ocean
heat is the issue
oh yeah, its frigging cold at that depth
in an ideal world you'd have a rescue transponder for that in addition to a maritime transponder
Even if everything was operating correctly, if the heaters eat shit, you’re going to die if you dont drop your weights ASAP
but redundancies aren't cheap
A rescue wouldn’t come in time
Most people lost overboard in the open ocean are never found. Those that are often say the rescuers circled very near them numerous times before finding them.
whoops wrong response
You’d die of hypothermia before then
I mean, it's cold but could be a lot worse: It can only be 33F/0.5C or something
Biggest reason life jackets and lifeboats are hivis colors now
Well sure, just means you wouldn’t freeze to death
You know, its too bad that the Alvin cannot be sent out in time to help look
With how popular a dive it is yeah, I'm surprised there are no other DSVs available
i didn't realize how crazy the 5 deeps guy was
i looked him up
he's
dived the deepest point in each of the five oceans
first person to dive challenger deep/mariana trench more htan once (15 times)
climbed the highest mountain on every continent
visited the north & south poles
Wow
Well if you got the cash to hire a 2nd porter to carry nothing but extra oxygen tanks to make sure you don't die standing in line on the way down
it's still pretty wild even if you're banking on the work of the sherpas
Even if I had the money at this point, I wouldn't bother. It's so commercialized now, and most of the people dying are simply bc they get stuck in TRAFFIC
i just realized i accidentally started a parallel conversation on this in #not-ffxiv-discussion lol
that deathtrap really is a hot topic huh

challenge: use a mainstream OS for a month (impossible)
I've not veered off from w10
Since I’m actually interested in this, moving from shitposts
Copyright and art an ai are - complex and undecided legally in most countries. At least the ones I know of.
Copying art and using it commercially is often copyright infringement.
Examining it and making something new from it is not.
My guess is ai “art” will adjust to meet whatever court cases and laws come, etc
forced
so 50 minutes of making me want to slap someone? 😄
Images you can hear
"making something new" from it strongly depends tbh
is that fuckin accelerator
no it's gilgamesh
Iori's trademark laugh from the King of Fighters games. Used the one from 2003 as that's his best one IMO.
like I use all sorts of OSes, and I've used Mac OS as a daily driver since 2001 😄
10.0.4 😄
the idea that someone has their head so firmly up their butt that they consider it a forceful act to use a Mac for a month
and people wonder why the console wars are still going
They explain it better than me -

Artists are understandably concerned about the possibility that automatic image generators like Stable Diffusion will undercut the market for their work. We live in a society that does not support people who are automated out of a job, and being a visual artist is an already precarious career.In...
(Of course that’s just one lawsuit, and it’s a pretty bad one)
honestly the only challenge I can imagine is when you want to play a game
apart from that, everything seems to be a web app these days
completely ignoring that, there's people who are very intolerant about differences like, how the minimize/maximize works, how command vs ctrl works
how programs don't necessarily exit when you close the only window open
the little naunces in how drag & drop differ
(on macos, if you drag a file on top of a folder, it'll pop open a finder window of that folder, and if you hover over another folder in the folder, it'll open that one.. etc.. windows doesn't do that)
my favorite is the whole
windows LOVES doing window snapping stuff
macos doesn't do that
windows is hardcore on wizards and hand holding
macos used to do none of that
i miss that about the older versions of OS X - they completely left you alone
they didn't nag you about OS updates or software updates or whatever
they didn't make you sign up for icloud or complain about icloud being low
the save dialog didn't act all weird and grumpy like it has for the past 10 years or so ><
it was particular jarring to compare windows xp to early mac os x
I kinda feel like everything has gotten less user friendly
windows XP was so in your face that when you plugged in a USB device it would
- play a sound
- tell you that you plugged in a device
- tell you that it was installing software for the device
- tell you whether that succeeded or failed.
(IIRC it'd steal focus every single time, too)
I've always found installing software on windows to be infuriating because the software installers would pop a new window every 5 seconds and steal focus doing it
in fact a lot of software on windows steals focus
Macs used to never do that, but Apple doesn't care anymore
now if I get a phone call, that stupid notification steals focus ;_;
I always find that weird about macos, how it interprets "maximise" as "slide onto a new virtual desktop"
(stealing focus == when you're typing and a new window pops open and all the keystrokes go to the new window)
I just wanna make smol window beeg
I HATE THAT
the mac version is to double click the title bar
same as the windows version lol
ah, the hidden button
I'll remember that next time I encounter my 1 weekly macbook
back in the days
that button just made the window bigger, but not necessarily such that it took up the whole screen
win11 has gotten insanely smooth about window snapping tho, better than I thought windows would ever get
oh you're more than welcome
I feel like I can't move a window around at all without it trying to maximize it or snap it
and these stupid things pop up everywhere
and this stupid thing
i bet there's a way to turn em off lol
What is that
yeah they appear when you hover over maximise or go anywhere near an edge
it's like that game where you move the loop around the wire without touching the metal, lol
if I could become CEO for the day I'd fire anyone who ever owrked on that feature
but at least they gave it an actual setting now
it used to be a registry hack to turn it off and it'd randomly turn back on after an OS update
oh kyanche, I know something that you probably love about win11
ahhh this is so nice, no more window snapping
I can use my computer like it's 2001 again ^_^
lol 😄
hey I'm used to macs, so that one never bugged me
I feel for the people who like the full size taskbar buttons with the window titles though
true, but macs handle returning to a multi-window app much better
the funny thing is, making new options while keeping the old ones unchanged was a MS trademark
idk why they suddenly gave that up
you can just click the dock icon once
apple inspiration ig
but yea IDK especially these days with screens being so big, idk why anyone would maximize things
i guess on laptops maybe
laptops!
but I always felt like having some overlap was easier on my bird brain
context switches throw me off
especially full screen ones
I could use 100% scaling on my lappy if I wanted, but. my boomer eyes
I sadly learned I can't use 'spaces' lol
or multiple 'desktops'
it causes me to blank out every time >>
lol, I tried using them on my laptop for a while
since they're basically a way to emulate multiple monitors
it falls apart when you're using a browser that supports workspaces tho
cuz you keep getting the desktops mixed up
lol
this is a beautiful reg hack I discovered today ✨
what I used to do at work when I needed a gazillion windows open at once
was.. just have more monitors
I used to write the software they used in the mission ops rooms
it really is the best solution, yeah
they had 4 screens at their tables so I asked for 4 at my desk and got it lol
yeah in a 2x2 config but this was idk 6 years ago or so? maybe 7?
it's a long story but I pretty easily filled the screens up lol
I'm imagining seeing someone use window snapping on that many screens
I think my monocle would fall into my coffee
unless they're all like, powershell windows. that would be hacker as hell
naaah
programs with many custom windows lol
sometimes they use browser front ends
there's always stuff like this too
whoa, you can control your mars lander on your phone now?
LOL
kerbal space moment
somebody did it
"ah heck I flicked the thrust too hard"
I actually wonder how long it'll be before the moon becomes a zone certified for civilian use
or will it just be kept science-only like antarctica?
man I can't find any examples off the top of my head
just things for controlling drones lol
I guess you could theoretically use those to control a drone at sub-orbital altitude
yeah, I think escape velocity would be an issue
you making a cosplay kyanche?
yesss
nailed it
i fucking hate this, and fortunately, Microsoft is adding it back in to Win11, as an option you can turn off... Soon.TM
i refuse to update my personal computers before this is a thing
dont really have a choice for my work computer though 😦
i spend more time on my work computer during the weekdays >>
I'm using w10 until it dies
I stuck with w7 until I literally couldn't play some games
i stuck wiht W7 until support was dropped
by then 10 was in a pretty good state
unless i need something from the new OS's, i generally wait until the old one starts running out of support
since by then the new one has been out for years.
Me: turns on PC
PC: goes all ASCII mode with multiple BSODs on one screen
What in the mother of fuck
sounds about as fun as what's now my backup desktop (dell) that went full hardware failure, only to be revived like nothing happened after reseatting the ram
(it's now a dumping grounds for my old cap card. might get a different sound card to have front ports working again with decent sound)
I can't believe this existed
does it fold out or are you supposed to play it like that
that hurts to look at
now imagine if that controlled a submarine
I thought that was a mask or NVG for a moment
Anyone know why my monitors turn off and PC fans get extremely loud? The PC stays on.
This happens occasionally
What kind of PC? Might be a power supply issue
One sec. Not home at the moment, but I’ll see if my pc part picker list is still saved
Also. Is this a new issue? How long have you had your pc?
It started happening recently yes. I built it around this March or April
Could be a gpu driver crashing, is it resolved with a reboot?
Could be gpu overheating too…. (edited for clarity)
When I completely turn it off and back on, it’s usually fine. Seems to happen when I start playing games
Yeah overheating is possible too
I did try launching a game and just letting it sit there while watching temps. Everything looks normal
Step 1: Download Device Driver Uninstaller.
Step 2: Download the newest driver from your graphics card manufacturers website: AMD and/or Nvidia.
Step 3: Disconnect your internet and restart your PC in safe mode.
Step 4: Run Device Driver Uninstaller and click on 'Clean and Restart' after you select your device type and GPU.
Step 5: After the PC restarts and you are disconnected from the internet, install the drivers you downloaded from Step 2.
Step 6: After you install them, restart your PC one final time and reconnect your internet.
Yeah make sure everything is up to date first
I haven’t no. I would have to go look whenever I return home
Ok
That makes most sense, try that ddu faq process and check event viewer when you can and report back
Will do. Thank you for the suggestions
It could also be as simple as a gpu power cable isn't fully seated
Power can do funky things
^
Yea it caught me off guard when it first happened
yeah sounds like a total driver crash. if it happens again would try unplugging a usb device to see if everything else is borked too (listening for disconnect notification)
if nothing happens would lean towards either power delivery issue or hardware failure
also try pressing Win + Ctrl + Shift + B (to reset the graphics driver)
I have 7 hours of meetings between the next 2 work days. ;.;
Losing a full day of work to meetings just feels badman.
:<
I use 10ft extensions all over the place for USB.
Also, there's some hope for you in the future! I CLEANED OFF TWO DESKS!.
Granted, one of them is now host to the X1C, but yanno, there's hope.
_>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Im moving my pc to my server room
going to run the cables directly : P
Less shit on my desk tbh
Going to do the fiberoptic USB or w/e like Linus uses?
no
That shit is too expensive lol
Its only 32Ft, if I have issues I will use a signal booster
I dont watch linus, but if its less then like 20M should be fine without fiber
More fiber. nods
True! Keeps the tubes shiny and clear.
Finally. My replacement headset.
I dont like either
just trying them out 😛
but in seriousness some ar ok
I dont like cherry when it comes to selection
Well, in that case, which switches do you recommend? I have a Ducky One 3 that came with Cherry Reds, but I think I want something stiiffer and quieter.
Uh
any of those
wait why did my message not send
Neapolitans, Akko Lavenders, U4T or U4T silents or baby kangaroos
Those are my go too
baby kangaroos I get for my friends lol
because they dont lube them
luging switches sound like a small pain tbh
That shit costs tens of thousands of dollars even on low end, so he should be grateful
If that was a joke, it wasn't very funny
yea but we're talking about used crappy ones from ebay
I wasn't paying attention to the rest of the convo
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Y5VWLDB?th=1 I have this, it's been good
Whether it's work or life, we need to use more and more electronic devices. When we need to use them at the same time, a single USB device is really not enough. This compact USB 3.0 hub allows you to add 4 additional USBs. The device is connected to a computer, and the hub's dedicated charging po...
charge port is a bit dumb but does the job
I just need one that doesn't drop signal if I have mice plugged into it
@dreamy chasm not exactly a hub hub but look
This one works well with an interface
Interesting
Aren't I just going to end up wasting the switching part of this if I use it, though
@sly elk It's here
Took me way too long to calibrate the colors to (somewhat) match my 2nd
Yes, lmfao but I was just bringing it up because I knew it can handle the interface
I mostly use it to switch between my laptop and PC lmfao
Also your wallpaper is pretty
And I just wanna say

Also, LMAO
That's about as big as mine is
🐴
This isn't half bad, actually
get more mods 😛
all of them are cocks
Reskins everything as subligars
hey so for some reason my game is currently running at 20 frames and I genuinely have no idea why, any ideas?
- Do you have anything else open?
- Check Task Manager.
besides discord no, but I always have discord open while playing ffxiv and I didnt have any issues before this
how much percent of my cpu should it be taking up?
If you're playing on a laptop, sometimes it uses the integrated graphics on accident. Try to force 3D to be used in nvidia control panel for FF14 in that case
I have figured out the issue
thanks for your time though
my laptop needed to be plugged in
Oh, a power profile then. You can adjust those as well if you do want to run at max performance on battery
eh its fine, thank you though
Here's hoping this doesn't break within 6 months...
Turtle Beach is okay enough. Not Skullcandy tier at least
turtle beach have been around forever, I bought their budget headsets for my kids and they're fine
Just bc something has been around forever doesn't mean it was ever good or still good. Look at Westinghouse TVs for example heh
I mean, I didn't say good, I said fine
Yep. They're in the Comfortably Mid Tier
*low
i've never seen a pair of headphones last my brother more than 6 months lol
i mean he's still using the v-modas he bought in 9/2021 but they're a taped together semi-broken mess
and he also has a pair of beats solo that .. I made him buy applecare for those because he broke the first pair, and I think the second one is also partially broken somehow 😄
this is why you buy sennheiser/beyer
I had a pair of like $60 Sony ones with a plastic reflex hinge on them I thought would break in less than a year, but they withstood tons of abuse actually, including numerous cases of stepping on or tripping over the cord etc. Lasted me a good 5 years
Apparently they were $40 even
all I can say is my beyer dt880 survived me throwing them on the floor once lol
no abuse otherwise though, just use
What the actual fuck is this asinine change to intel branding?
"The most important changes include dropping the 'i' from the naming scheme and opting for a more straightforward Core 3, 5, and 7 branding structure for Intel's mainstream processors. The other notable inclusion, which is now officially confirmed, is that Intel will bifurcate the Core brand a bit and place its premium client products in their own category, using the new Ultra moniker."
Thats stupid as shit
They're also dropping a number place
Except it's not straightforward bc they're adding the words Ultra and Processor
Core 9 Processor Ultra 1390K
Rolls off the tongue so much better than the old way!
its stupid, everyone in the tech space knows its stupid.
its basically making Intels sound like generic tech names for shit.
like motherboards have been for years.
add ultra, and extreme to the names, yay, you are SO innovative and stand out from the crowd..... /s
fucking marketing morons trying to justify their job
I think they intentionally want to muddy the waters bc somehow that helps in selling shit or upselling or something if the average person doesn't know wtf they're looking at.
wouldn't be surprised, at least it will be entertaining when GN makes fun of it in every new CPU review 😛
well let's think about this important bit of trivia, my friend. The next time you buy an intel Core 9 Processor Ultra 1390K, $2 of that purchase will be going to the dude who got paid multiple millions to come up with that idea.
INtel hasn't innovated in the CPU market in years
I mean, they've got at least a decade or two of tiny incremental improvements
they also outsourced everything
Well, that's something, but tiny improvements are not going to drive CPU sales
and haven't put any effort whatsoever into harvesting new engineering talent in the US
meanwhile we have to watch TSMC acting all cocky about their Arizona plant
-shudder-
like if this is the best we can do
drag some company here
to call americans stupid, lazy, and entitled
AZ is not a good place for a chip fab. Not enough water
I mean never mind all the business apple and amd and others bring them and all that sweet sweet american money
for them it's a dick measuring contest
oh speaking of american companies wait
of course we had to bring someone in outside from the US. We have been doing that since the 80s. There's no one left with the needed knowledge
ford's bringing back the taurus?
nice. I had a taurus. It was a nice little car
there's nobody with the needed knowledge because the only thing that has a worse career reputation is the video game industry
and people with the knowledge do exist
people with the brains exist
they just don't wanna work 18 hour shifts, ya know?
OH, BTW. if anyone is using Arch, kernel 6.3.9 is out. It was pushed to my OS just now
if you're smart enough to do that kinda work you can make bank doing other things
yup
no way I am spending 12+ hours in a factory
I have done 12 hours shifts. They drain your soul
so, a bit of a bummer that FFXVI won't come out on PC for a year
pft that's great news for sony
But we will know that PC edition is playable or not major bug mess like Automata/XV
suddenly a bunch of people are gonna buy a $400-500 brick
to run a game they could run on their pc
Eh ngl the stigma of huge boxed PC and its setup......
me w le deck and sff one kekw
yeah, its a boost for Sony.
It's a brick that plays bluray
tbh
It's okay value if you just want a console that plays bluray
but there's a lot of asterisks
I thought XV ran pretty well, but required a beefy system?
Tbh I didn't like XV so I'm hesitant about XVI. When FF7 Rebirth hits I'll probably grab a PS5 tho lol
Although I have 100s of games to play, so could just play those until pc release
15 tried to load the world all at once so that kinda didn't go well with anyone used to regular programming (async loading)
Here's hoping that FFXVI uses a streaming loading method
I mean, I make my money selling the machines that do the processing to the wageslaves very happy employees who work in the semiconductor fabs
Find the issue about this absolute piece of shit
exactly
Afternoon
nice to see gnome actually doing something for its users
The Internet has been carved into corporate fiefdoms, fiefdoms most people now see as some kind of natural order. It wasn't like this.
Are people actually dumb?
Miners generally don't rack their cards in a way that puts strain in the specific part that the cards are cracking
Or, are they referring to something else
The cracking GPU die was due to water infiltration to the chip.
Then when it was heated post-storage it expanded and blew.
AKA: Miners don't temp-control HW they're not using xD
if it was a miner worth their salt, they knew to undervolt the GPU
you get the best hash/kwh ratio if you don't run your mining rig at full capacity
Ah, right
Pretty sure I've seen some people wash gpus with water ig
that's when you hesitate to buy used video cards from aliexpress
tfw you cant figure out where you left your terminal crimps at, so you just buy another cheap pair from HF

ok, i've got another dumb question. if i tie in the anode and cathode of an led to the same point on a wire, is that going to work as a parallel circuit, or not at all?
If you connect the anode and cathode at the same point you won't get anything because there's no difference between potential. The electricity will take the path of least resistance, which is the piece of wire that they're touching.
now if you broke that parallel path or stuck a resistor or something on it, things change
this would work
Totally forgot about the question. The idea would be to to have an indicator led (with appropriate resistor) on 3 different 12v branches that would show when power is active on those branches. Guess it’s just easier to tie them off to their own ground rather than try to keep them tied in
Good thing i have some 24awg strand lying around for it
Put the led in series with the branch
You just need to make sure you're not burning it out
Considering it’s on a 12v circuit, guaranteed to burn them out
Especially since at least two branches are going to be pulling at least 2-3 amps
Not with the appropriate resistor, as you mentioned
Yea, but then what’s the point of using it as an indicator? I’d be killing the voltage down the branch
That’s why i was thinking parallel, not series
The thing is though
Parallel circuits can work independently. You can have an open in one path and it won't affect the other
What are you trying to do with the circuit exactly?
Control board, driver board, and tool head, all of which are 12v and 500mA-3A
Ebay's still fine if you're careful
Most cards with problems end up having the issues right when you get them
i deleted ff14 and the files but my storage hasnt free'd up
Did you use mods or something?

my ssd idles 15c hotter than my 4070 lol
piece of shit kioxia
you can get 1TB Samsung 980 (non Pro) for £40 now
I just have a tiny ass case with non optimal airflow, I think
Also, this card probably hasn't been repasted in years
https://twitter.com/pizzalad22/status/1672439138291679234 the only good thing ai's made so far
MR KRABS JUST SANG THE ENTIRE BALLIN SONG ON AI SPONGE
WHAT IS HAPPENING
39167

Are all 3 always hot?
provided the respective toggle switch is on, yes
So if you have a switch, why do you need an LED?
latching push buttons are cheaper than toggle switches
An LED in parallel will work, just make sure you put a high resistance value in that circuit and connect it after the switch so it's split from the main circuit
Excuse the scuffed drawing but something like this. Your blocks are the loads you have
Is the factory packaging enough protection for shipping a gpu out? Obviously still gonna put it inside another box for labels
depends on the box
or manufacturer rather, because some just put their GPUs "on display" inside the box so they have absolutely no protection from the top
given how expensive GPUs have become, i really wouldn't save on the scrap paper to pad the box
It's got a lot of foam padding inside the manufacturer box
Cause the gpu has an aio built in
honestly depends on the courier too
I can't speak for other manufacturers, but nvidia's founders is good enough, I'd still add some padding you may have from amazon deliveries. Also declare cost of the package and insure it
Learn about certified mail, registered mail, signature confirmation receipts, and insurance options for mail and package shipments.
Doesn't hurt to ship it in a slightly bigger box with padding
When do you not buy overkill, ice
oh you got a job?
congrats
disney one of them?
or you can't talk about either?
nice nice
from shady MS shill to disney princess
make yourself indespensible and then hit me up with free eurodisney trip
at least you'll be able to afford your xiv sub now lol
Sounds like you're hosting a lot
I wish I could visit Disneyland in the European Commonwealth
this is all just to wfh secure, not host anything I bet
companies like disney definitely wouldn't appreciate leaks due to a sloppy remote contractor
Can you make them bring back paper fastpasses?
free disney+ for all tech regulars right?
Poor Shue
I just can't wait to finally purchase the beefy PC and start working on my vidya game
Oh yeah and I should probably do this before my country's economy collapses and 1€ will worth 10,000,000 HUF
Good luck with that
Got employees? Or solo?
Llc might’ve been better tax-wise
Since it’s pass through to your own income bracket iirc
True, you’d be able to finagle a lot as business expenses too, if it’s done from home
Iirc you could even expense part of your mortgage based on sqft of your office

Anyone have any experience using like a grip tape or something similar on a gpu to change the color of it? I don't wanna paint the shroud and void warranty, but finding a white gpu that doesn't cost more for no reason is ass
Yeah If it was out of warranty I wouldn't mind
But never know when that rma can save your life
If I got a case with no visibility inside, it would honestly get rid of the problem 😭
That's true, I haven't really thought of it
It honestly still looks baller
Did you sand it down or just primer and paint?
I tried to paint a mouse, sanded, primed, paint, and it honestly turned out really badly
So I get scared with painting things
Ofc maybe hand oils and stuff messed it up but idk
I wish white pc hardware wasn't a luxury tax 😢
Yeah, pretty sure my keeb cost more than the identical black model, same for case and ram etc
I would love one of the rog strix white 3080s, but those are like non existing
I've a 3080 and would rather trade for the asus or sell for a good portion of the money, 40 series is out of budget lmao
No way in hell I downgrade to 3060
In my main pc anyway
Although I do want a gpu with more vram
10gbs is not enough and is a crime
Yeah no kidding, my last gpu had 16, the 3080 has 10 and I had to turn settings down for the "better" card
I was hurt
do you vertical mount?
Idk about nord, I used protonvpn for a bit cause it was free
Didn't really give me issues when I used it
US or canada? Where did you connect
I'm US
And honestly it barely had many options so I just picked the one with lowest traffic
Are you unable to play the game without vpn, or are you having an issue with servers
My runs smooth, but ever since the recent patches I've been getting lag spikes
pretty sure it's a server thing
Oh yeah thats been a thing, I know some people have been encountering it and may have more experience with it.
I used a VPN cause I couldn't connect without it because of security issues
But replacing my modem fixed that issue
Proton may not be the use there because the free version isn't the best speed
i really hate icloud/apple's photos app
at some point I tried to do a mass export but it was one of those "this is way too slow to even be useful" things, so I just went in the photos app 'library' folder and yanked everything out
but it screws with EXIF dateTimeOriginal fields :S
so stuff ends up kinda pooled together by the date my phone uploaded it to icloud
hmm no that doesn't make sense either
because like, there's 200 pictures with december 20, 2020 as the date
but then in the photos app they might have dates like december 21, 22, etc
ooo someone made a tool for using/manipulating photos' sqlite database. SWEET!
So some bots use the autocomplete thing with their slash commands, but you can only have 25 options at a time whenever someone types something.
I wanted to pull all the items in FFXIV and make them autocomplete-able, but there's like 41000 of them going by XIVAPI.
So I went with loading a list of names and IDs of items that the bot uses to throw into a mapped collection from a file (because I really didn't want to pull from the API starting out), and filtered out choices based on whatever the user's typing and only showing 25 or less autocomplete text at a time.
And periodically running a cron job to update the collection with the API to keep things up to date.
All of this took me a week to figure out because I severely overestimated caching and rate limits.
const focused = interaction.options.getFocused();
const dataset = interaction.client.datasets.get(this.data.name);
const choices = Array.from(dataset, ([key, value]) => ({ key, value }));
const filtered = choices.filter((choice) =>
choice.value.toLowerCase().startsWith(focused.toLowerCase())
);
return await interaction.respond(
filtered
.map((choice) => ({ name: choice.value, value: choice.key }))
.slice(0, 25)
);
At least with the latter, that's something I'll likely tweak it to once/if I start branching out past EN translations.
With the autocomplete thing-y, it won't let the users submit anything that goes out the item's name.
Like if someone were to type Gil, it'd accept that (or gIL, GiL, etc.).
But if they type Gils or something, it'll tell them to try again.
What it's really doing is taking the id of that item before making an API call, there's no key-value pair for Gils compared to Gil.
But yeah, eventually I want to take into account different languages but I fought with this for a week just in English.
Oh and yeah the example I looked up for filtering did something where it assigned it to a result and returned that, I just get very code ninja-y sometimes.
TIL the cheapest iMac apple sells does not have USB-A ports.
I always thought the cheap model just lacked the ethernet port on the power brick
USB C?
it still has those
they just want to send you cables
it means that imac has a special rear case that lacks the 2 usb ports
and a special motherboard that also lacks the 2 usb ports
well not necessarily unless theyre in the same spots
the mobo could be the same, but the connectors aren't soldered to begin with
yea
the ports are on daughter cards
oh also sadly the 2nd set are just more usb-c ports lol 😄
Makes sense
Moldings are cheap enough to make
i don't hate their decision though
But a drill bit ain't so hard to use after your warranty is over..
ah apple doesn't roll that way. Usually it's milled billet aluminum lol
idk if they're still doing that
but they sure liked doing it for a while
Still, cheaper to cut out 2 than 4, insignificant pricing
And just a program being run
The only price difference is the time it takes to rout out the additional 2
Which is fairly insignificant, but more points of failure for inspection so a slightly higher cost
yea but now they have to make and maintain a stock of 2 different back panels instead of 1
admittedly, they already make a ton of different variations for the imacs
Ye
my favorite is the keyboards, with the icing on the cake that you can only buy them as a service part, you can't just buy a blue keyboard from apple
For them it's a small cost compared to profits
so they make 7 colors of iMac (4 are also offered in the 2 usb port version)
Hey, at least it's not a subscription yet
for each of those 7 colors, they make a keyboard with touch ID and an extended keyboard with touch ID... in 16 languages....
some languages are completely different units, too. Not just different keycaps.
also for the cheap model there's a short keyboard without touch ID 😄
so they have 288 different keyboard SKUs
Crazy
also they offer the mouse and trackpad in the 7 colors. So another 14 SKUs.
Is that for releases this year or overall in production?
i think they came out last year
they haven't made a new model, but it wouldn't come with a new keyboard soo
short version
the trackpad is even more subtle because the only colored part is the trim around the edge
i actually wonder if they're just made to order
and they can ship them to a warehouse where they just snap the right color cover on the unit
that would explain why you can't just buy them off the website lol
left the server
grats on the 4090 tho
thanks
important gaming accessories
oh no wait sorry
who the fuck keeps buying HyperX cloud gaming headset
is it Tyler1?
ragers
where they smash it
also
lol with the antiaging cream
and the work gloves
nice combo
supplies of a secretly 60 years old serial killer
Oy SK-II is better
Anyone using the official Reddit app? Can I easily filter or block subreddits I don't want like r/Politics, or Worldnews, etc?
I prefer to use a browser and just go directly to the subs I'm interested in
Yes
Click 3 dots, click mute
You can also setup a custom feed for subs you want
yeah that is nutty and not and pretty cheap but idk who would ever need that
He is running an it contractor business from home but he should get more clients first
ah
How much are you paying for gbit
In my first task in this role I say keep your existing plan until you really need the extra speed for more clients, I just saved you $720 per year
I'll bill you later
personally
I have 200mbps
and its enough for me
1gbit does exist for 50 euro a month
but I do not need it
so the main question is "is this enough for me"
Why would that be tempting? Most CDNs cap speeds at a fraction of that. I don't think I've ever gotten higher than like 400mbps from Steam, for example.
And beyond Steam, most are way less than that for various sites I've downloaded from. 100mbps is a common cap
Can't say I've experienced that
As you probably already know, this won't be beneficially for work or gaming, unless you're using them simultaneously for prolonged periods of time. Most big companies I've worked for have awful transfer speeds due to VPNs
Put it away
and what are you supposed to do with a cable that short?
my vlans are kinda nonsense

idk if there's any use to cables that short, but you can use ethernet to connect two machines together

I definitely didn't know that
ice is probably fucking with us
Probably
Then again maybe he has a switch or a home router right next to his laptop
I literally can't imagine any other reason
i think it was probably a test cable
I expect he was just practising crimping and wanted to waste as little cable as possible
good luck, hopefully you do actually get some enjoyment from it
what are combo jacks?
ah
unrelated to that, but I do need to run an additional 15a circuit to the office
might just make it a 20, but I'm not looking forward to it
For some reason, this house's kitchen lights, some kitchen outlets, office, hall and a bedroom are all on a 15a circuit
i do not
bit frustrating because i told them the room would be an office when building it
I am interested in electronics
yet they didn't run it on a separate circuit...
But I'm also more of a coder
Still I should learn this. Who knows when a robot apocalypse happens and I need to be able to craft EMP bombs lmao
nah because i didn't explicitly say i needed it on a separate circuit so it's my mistake there. was my first build anyway. Learned a lot for the next house lol
Darn
The only thing I'm not confident about is modifying the circuit breaker panel. So I'll get someone else to do it. Just not looking forward to paying for it lol. I'll have to see how the circuits are routed and if I can also break them apart to the panel to allow them to take on more load if needed
Bought this house at 22, not planning on making it my forever home but it's great for now
Ah yes, self-teaching robot that needs no human to be supervised
it'll eventually be a rental
That's not how you prevent Misalignment
Yeah, I moved from a high CoL state to low CoL
4 bedroom here was 280k in 2019
now its like 450k
but where i used to live, to get an equivalent would have been at least 700-900k
I got lucky, I got to learn basic electronics when I was very young, the same time I was learning PIC ASM.
I am looking at these prices like wow.... I'll never own a house because I make around $550 a month
I feel weird these days looking at micros, and seeing C, and not ASM. 😦
I like C, I learned it in school, though I always preferred C++
I completely skipped C until I was already working in tech, and even then, it was more to read than write.
I was good at intro coding, but hated it. Not for me, kudos to you guys for actually being big brains with it
Tbh, thinking about it, I learned syscalls before I learned C.
But that's syadmin life for you
Tbh, coding is mostly puzzle sovling imo.
The hard part is defining the puzzle, then you get to have the fun of solving it.
Defining the puzzle sucks.
Well, when I was young, I used to deal with Quake engine, which was C
You kids and your having engines when you were younger!
That engine is a year older than me
We wrote ASM both directions WITHOUT HOME KEYS.
Tbh, that's aroung the time I was writing asm for pic's.
About the right timing though as you'd be a couple years later and those engines would be commonly available.
I kinda miss pics some days.
They were so simple, but so horrible.
Nowadays I'm trying to learn UE5, specifically blueprints while keeping coding to the things I can't do in blueps
Tbh, blueps is pretty much the same as me typing stuffs, except I get to keep my finger tips
True
Funny btw, apparently Amazon says my packages will arrive on July 1st
It won't because the moment they hand it over to local post, they won't touch it till Monday
Nope
Locals don't deliver on weekend
Eh, ours can't decide if I'm getting stuff on july 17 or back on june 17.
So it's fun here atm.
I mean, it is coming from Deutschland so maybe they deliver it personally?
DHL
Jeff Bezos comes personally to hand over my 4090
Or you just do the smart thing and don't allow inbound network traffic on that vlan.
Which is what I'd do.
I think, well my bet is, it will be delivered by DHL
I'd setup an inter-vlan bridge.
So you can have traffic from your main vlan, to your iot vlan, then your iot vlan can go the net, but people can't come in.
Oh, just use VPN's.
Like an adult. 😛
Or yeah, unifi the entire thing and use a unifi recorder/router combo.
I've considered that thought before, but I'm really physically too damn big to ever consider it and look remotely reasonable.

No thx, just more reasons to get fit and look better. 😄
That movie did feel a little too real with that description of humans tho.
I find it funny people consider AI to be future of writing code and stuff
Honestly, it really could be.
The issue is that people don't really understand the hard part of coding, is knowing wtf to ask for.
The logic-y puzzle bits are perfect for a computer to work out.
Reminds me Hi-Fi Rush where everything is done by robots, including programming
The hard part is telling the computer wtf you want it to do.
Mfw the computer does exactly what I programmed it do

Well, yeah, it's the chinese room problem.
Can you tell the difference between a perfect translation computer, and a human who can do the translation, if you give them the same inputs and they give you the same output?
As my teachers used to say, there's a difference between the computer doing what you programmed it do vs what you actually want it to do.
We're not allowed to use copilot at work, and tbh, I don't really need it much for anything.
At this point the problems I'm solving tend to be in the space of "Oh god, copilot's never seen this before"
Or "Oh damn it, this is in a weird context space that's specific to our application due to legacy code"
See, golang.
😄
Jetbrains did an excellent job with test codegen, so you just have to fill in some data variables.
I'm in the space where AI is useless to me, because not even I know what the fuck I want to do
That's sorta the reason that yes, AI can take over /programming/ but it can't take over the fact managers can't figure out wtf they want the program to do.
Which people do not realize programmers have to do.
I'm a video game designer but not the idea guy, I'm the actual video game designer
Currently I have three distinct ideas but I'm not sure which one to do first and what the core gameplay loop should be
Yeah, I used to be the software-implementer, then I got product training
And now I'm the poor bastard who can implement and dissaemble bad requirements into an auctual product.
Don't get me wrong, pays fantastically
But it sucks some days.
It took a serious shift in 3rd party platforms to drive our first major user acqs.
Then ~things~ and ~people~ drove the major waves from there on out.
Some ideas I have would require like an entire studio, but at least a good 20-30 people
Being a solo indie dev is not that
Sort-of? You take those ideas and break them down into core bits and pieces.
I can tell you that a single developer can often replace 10-15 people if they get good at understanding what the actual requirements are. 🙂
I think first I'm gonna try something that's feasible for me. Not the gameplay revolution I have in mind, but a good start to put my foot into the doorway
Some stuff like art assets, models, etc, sure.
Those will absolutely need people, but if you think you need 20-30 devs, that's a question of scoping and "why"
Sorta.
Mostly
I've nearly given up on trying to learn how to code
Which is one of the reasons why I suck at hi-fi rush
There's a reason games in dev have super hacky fucking previz models.
Oh dw, core gameplay I can do
Heck, go look at previz for movies. They don't have final models, or overyalys or anything like that.
I need people for those extras, I'm the technical type of person
But it's enough to sell the idea to someone who /can/ provide you with the money to get the extra people.
