...Except with like 360mm long and 30mm wide heatsink on them now haha

sly elk
#

i mean, if you go a couple years up where there's BGA memory instead

#

it's funny because for the 10/20 they started lengthening the PCB

#

and then the 30/40 brought back the normal length PCB

#

it's just underneath a giant plastic monstrosity

#

and there might be a cool card or two, but let's face it.. these things are fugly

#

idk maybe i exaggerate some

#

but the 40 series really started to put me off with bad design lol

odd sand
#

Nvidia is pinching them on margins so hard these days, they can't afford really cool looks

EVGA said that what? GPUs were 90% of their revenue but 3% of their profit? MiqoteDepressed

also to be fair, the old ones were rarely made to look good lol

#

Will be interesting to see what their revenue and profits are next year after being out of the GPU market

odd sand
#

Bc the only other thing ppl bought regularly from them were PSUs. I know they've made motherboards for like 10 years now, but I've never known a single person to own one. And also now supposedly keyboards or something?

#

Look at how much bare silicon is on that compared to today's cards heh

sly elk
#

iirc some of the keyboards are the fake mechanical kind

#

the evga/superflower PSUs had a fantastic reputation but I'm kinda meh on my experience with them

#

I would buy an evga board but I get the impression they don't really support them, as odd as that seems

#

hmm I take back what I said, they have released a few firmware updates for their z790 and a bunch for the x570 board

#

i also like their 4 digit diagnostic display 😄

#

who needs 2 when you can have 4 :]

odd sand
#

Even having 2 these days is suddenly rare. They've all gone to cheaping out with the 4 little led dots instead

sly elk
#

ye I hate that

odd sand
#

Cheaping out on the leds while doubling the MSRP of the boards in 3 years omegabruh

sly elk
#

meh

#

it is true though, i bought my maximus xi hero in 2018 for $272

#

and it had those

#

the maximus z790 hero costs $599 lol, more than double for the same damn model

#

i bought my x670e carbon for $439, and it has the 2-digit display too 🙂

#

asus is kind of a ripoff now >>

dreamy chasm

Asrock is reportedly going to release a bunch of boards with higher end components without all the extra bloat soon

I remember the days when you paid 120 bucks for a z97 board and called it a high end board Skull

Hi everyone, quick update for those in the loop about the connection issues. I've been running traces and pings since last night, and there appears to be a faulty node somewhere in the routing between the East Coast and SE's datacenter. As of right now there is no fix that can be done on the player side to resolve the issue. So don't worry about resetting routers, modems, or any other networking equipment!

I've also been collecting logs and data from other users having the same problem, and I found that once the routing goes past a node in NYC, the next hop is to an NTT node (ae-17.a02.nycmny17.us.bb.gin.ntt.net 129.250.8.229). This node is geolocated is Hoboken, NJ and is most likely the point of failure for East Coast.

I'll be continuing to investigate throughout the day as time allows and update the OF post with more info

real edge
#

you can use a vpn like mudfish to dodge faulty nodes

rose storm
real edge
#

true, but chances are SE will not listen, so outside of making them know somehow we can only use VPNs to dodge the node to have a good experience

rose storm
#

I just spent a good 15 minutes on the phone with their support and we actually got somewhere. I gave him all the information I've been dumping into the threads, even down to the location of the nodes and the IP addresses. They're going to forward it to the team that's been investigating and we should see a Lodestone post with the next day regarding it.

I had to do some convincing that this wasn't an ISP-specific issue and that the possible node in question is owned by NTT (What a fucking surprise) and not Optimum. Fingers crossed we'll be getting somewhere soon

modest moss
#

with ATT there was literally 3 way finger pointing and blame avoidance so don't hold your breath

harsh mulch
#

what is an elevated command prompt? I'm getting 2002 and I'm east coast so may this will fix

rose storm
#

Start Menu > type 'cmd' > right-click Command Prompt and choose "Run as Administrator"

harsh mulch
rose storm
#

You can just type it in, don't need to paste it. Run each command one at a time

harsh mulch
#

"ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset"
so is that considered 2 commands?

autumn hemlock
#

It worked last night for me but today doing that still resulted in 2002 errors

autumn hemlock
#

Tired using the Google and Cloudsflare DNS servers as well as per advice from a friend and it also was a no go. Real bummer

harsh mulch
#

kk ty i'll try resetting then and see if it helps

rose storm
#

With the new information I've been getting, troubleshooting on the client-side is going to be very limited. You don't need to go crazy resetting your modem or routers, just run those couple commands and try again. Eventually you'll get in

harsh mulch
#

so is it just temporary east coast thing?

rose storm
#

It's not temporary, it's still ongoing. Eventually it'll be resolved

harsh mulch
#

kk, that's good to know it's not my fault

autumn hemlock
harsh mulch

boo i tried and it didn't fix. Hopefully the servers will just be fixed later on

Is it because of that node?

#

Like. Game froze for a solid 5-7 seconds before catching up really really fast.

spring raven
#

Yes, that sounds like exactly the sort of behavior you'd see with this sort of connection issue

There was a node near me that was offline for almost a week recently that had me down to a couple hundred kb/s download speeds and that was exactly what I saw

Please refer to the pinned post in #questions-and-help to go to the official forums post and put your information there. It won't get fixed unless SE sees how widespread it has become. 3A for the head, probably no more than 5A combined for the control board and motors

#

no idea for the fans though

cerulean talon
#

Any PSU should be able to deliver that, that's less than 80w.

late basalt
#

i'd be rigging up old cpu cooling fans

cerulean talon
#

Even a cheap ATX PSU is 400-500w.

late basalt
#

so maybe half an amp at most?

cerulean talon
#

And the bulk of that is on 12v.

late basalt
#

~10A i'd call it?

cerulean talon
#

So 120w.

late basalt
cerulean talon
#

w = v * a

late basalt
#

room smells like overcooked bacon now, but w/e haha

cerulean talon
#

So yeah, just get a cheap PSU used and short green to black. 😛

late basalt
#

plus side, i know the two psu in my cabinet are so old that they have the 4pin molex connectors on em

cerulean talon
#

Tbh, I've used PSU's as benchtop supplies before, they're super nice for ir.

late basalt
#

first one i snagged out

cerulean talon
#

19A, you're good.

late basalt
#

just need to figure out which one's the +12V

#

unless that's one pair of the molex pins

cerulean talon
#

If there's an 8 pin yellow/black, it's yellow and black.

late basalt
#

older than that, actually

#

four pin yellow/black

cerulean talon
#

Oh still yellow.

#

Red is 5vdc

late basalt
#

basically i'd be looking for the cpu plug then?

#

rather than the molex?

cerulean talon
#

Nah, those are rated for like 100-150w, so you should be fine useing the 4 pin, yellow wire.

late basalt
#

all the molex on this one are y/b/b/r red though

cerulean talon
#

You want Y/B

late basalt
#

while the one that i'm sure was the cpu power is y/y/b/b

cerulean talon
#

it is, but that's just a handy bit as it uses 2x12v, 2x g.

late basalt
#

one pair the -12v? or both +12v?

cerulean talon
#

B is ground, y is +12

#

There's a -5v rail, but not a -12 IIRC.

late basalt
#

there is on this one, actually

cerulean talon
#

That's on the 20 pin usually tho.

late basalt
#

only at 0.8A

cerulean talon
#

Ah.

late basalt
#

so probably motherboard

cerulean talon
#

Yeah.

#

Most of the weird voltages are on the 20 pin conn.

late basalt
#

and when you say green to black, is that any black on the 20 pin?

cerulean talon
#

Ye.

#

It should turn on and start spinning it's fan.

late basalt
#

🤔 does it always need to stay shorted?

#

be a nice convenient way to wire up an e-stop if it does

cerulean talon
#

For a permanent solution, I /highly/ suggest an adapter, they're usually 5-10$ on amazon, or 3d print something.

#

IIRC, yes, but I'm a tad sleepy, so look it up to cross-check me.

#

Apparently, yes though.

#

Green is just held-low (Grounded) to tell the PSU to turn on.

#

Tbh, that's... a neat e-stop idea to have to hold it high via an &.

late basalt
#

a what?

cerulean talon
#

And gate.

#

My brain was working out how that'd work, it's been a long day, and it went "Ooooh, magnetic latch"

#

Which would need to be held closed /originally/ to boot the stupid thing so it wanted an and gate.

late basalt
#

ah haha

#

🤔 i wonder if i could figure out what the vref or w/e it uses to determine that it's high

#

ideas are knocking around, but i think it'd just be easier to wire it in after the PSU and before all the components

#

less ways to go horribly wrong

cerulean talon
#

Tbh, now I kinda want to build a dedicated adapter for that.

#

The only concern would be most e-stops need to leave fans running

#

But if you don't, then yeah, just have something break the conn.

late basalt
#

but if i can make the salvaged PSU work, it'll save me 30-60 on one from amazon

#

🤔 yea, it shouldnt be that hard to have the fans have their own switch and keep them before the e-stop

#

though dedicated fans like on the laser head source their power from the control board on the head itself

#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

cerulean talon
#

Yeah, you've got some options.

#

But yeah, in crypto mining, we use old HP PSU's with 200A of 12v to power miners. 😄

#

With dedicated breakout boards.

late basalt
#

i just need to make sure the psu i use is the one that ISNT the one with a seized up fan

cerulean talon
#

The fans are cheap. 😄

late basalt
#

it's been unplugged for years, but i'm not messing around with something that has mains level caps at this point tbh

#

(gotta wait until i pay for healthcare through work first)

cerulean talon
#

Just short the DC out. :p

#

But yeah, I getchu.

late basalt
#

oh wow

#

i just looked at the back of that psu

#

doesnt even have a switch

#

it's probably so old that it relies on that pin being kept low to stay on

cerulean talon
#

ATX standard says yes.

late basalt
#

so if it doesnt have a seized fan, this one might actually be perfect

cerulean talon
#

It must be kept low

#

I've done my good deed for the week.

#

😄

#

I sorted my spice cabinet this morning, and now I've helped reuse an old PSU.

#

Today is a good day.

late basalt
#

one last question though, would you recommend just completely enclosing the engraver with plywood (and door, obviously), especially after i upgrade the head, or is it worth the expense of getting the appropriate glass/acrylic to make a viewport?

cerulean talon
#

Tbh, cover it with a thin veneer of steel if you're worried.

late basalt
#

more worried about the laser bouncing just wrong and finding an eyeball

cerulean talon
#

My 20w CO2 has 2mm steel sheathing.

#

Any opening should yes, be rated for the nm you're working with.

#

But general casing, slap a bit of steel on there.

#

Diode lasers aren't gonna hold that focal point for long though, so you should be mostly fine.

late basalt
#

true, but i do plan on upping to a 5-5.5w head though

#

and that one's got more damage potential on reflection than the 500mW does

cerulean talon
#

Yeah, you should encase it, and by and large, plywood should work, or like I said, 2mm steel. 😛

#

When you can afford to upgrade.

#

The top is what I'd be /most/ concerned with

#

The sides should be far enough away the laser largely diffuses.

late basalt
#

if anything i'd sheet the bottom in steel

cerulean talon
#

Yeah, top and bottom

late basalt
#

top i'm not as worried about tbh

#

probably about 14 inches to the top if you count the space between the lense and the bottom floor

cerulean talon
#

Oh, yeah, more than enough room to difuse? Diffuse? Spread out if it's that far.

late basalt
#

Diffuse, fwiw

#

provided i'm not spending out the ass for it, i'd like to get a laser head that has that glass/acrylic "skirt" under the lense

cerulean talon
#

My braIn wanted "Defuze" which is 100% wrong. :F

late basalt
#

hey now, this isnt EOD

#

(yet)

cerulean talon
#

Oh right, your'e not doing Co2, you can use acrylics can't you?

#

co2 just nukes it's way through acrylics, my bad.

late basalt
#

it's just getting the right color without it being stupid expensive

#

at which point glass of the right color would probably be cheaper

cerulean talon
#

And yeah, that makes more sense now.

late basalt
#

eventually i'd want a co2 machine, but that's waaaaaaaaaaaaaay down the line/years

cerulean talon
#

I can't wait to use mine.

#

But venting ;.;

late basalt
#

gotta make the chinese knockoff work itself to death to earn it's replacement

#

is it in the garage now? or not enough space yet?

cerulean talon
#

It's right behind me.

#

I've got an auctually verified 20w tube and a bunch of new lenses for it.

late basalt
#

i'm trying not to be facetious, but are YOU in the garage right now? haha

cerulean talon
#

Naaaah.

late basalt
#

so not enough room yet™️ then?

cerulean talon
#

It's like 95f in my garage.

#

No, there's a car in it that's on my lifts. xD

late basalt
#

so? just get yourself one of those harbor freight tool carts to wheel the laser around

cerulean talon
#

If there was room ;.;

late basalt
#

as is the problem with collecting Fun Stuff ™️

#

i've got a decent sized propane furnace and crucible that's been in it's box for the last.... 3 years? because i've not had the time to use it and figure out storage for it after i do

#

it's basically one of those "once i get my own place" things

cerulean talon
#

I've got that, an eletric smelting furnace, the laser cutter, the list goes on.

late basalt
#

honestly i wish i'd get lucky and hit the fucking lottery already

#

not even the mega millions or w/e

#

i'd settle for just 150k or w/e

cerulean talon
#

I've been looking at my next piece of property. If I can save up like 200-300k, it's gonna be a thing.

#

Just requires a very aggressive savings plan.

late basalt
#

literally more than enough to buy a house where i'm currently at right now

#

or build, tbh

#

likely way cheaper

cerulean talon
#

I'm thinking prebuilt 600sqft homes on like 30-40 acres sounds good to me.

#

I don't need much space if I can drop somewhere to do work in.

late basalt
#

i'd settle for 401 tbh

#

which is the bare minimum for zoning out here

#

i'd go smaller if i could just so i could finally have my own place

cerulean talon
#

Honestly, I just need to go like 1 hour out of a city, and find something nice there.

#

Well, 1 hout outside the /suburbs/ of a city.

late basalt
#

like i could probably build a 400sqft wooden box and fit it out with appliances and decor for less than 10k

cerulean talon
#

Hahaha.

#

I know the feeling tbh.

late basalt
#

and i'd be fine with it

#

longterm? fuck no

#

definitely be adding onto that bitch as the years go by

cerulean talon
#

I've got like a half dozen people who want to tiny-home on land if I get a bunch.

#

And it's looking more and more viable these days.

late basalt
#

check zoning laws though

cerulean talon
#

Yeah, I know.

late basalt
#

out here at least, zoning prohibits ADUs

#

so only one residence per plot

cerulean talon
#

Yeah, this would likely be a couple hours in the middle of nowhere in unincorporated land.

late basalt
#

you'd still have county zoning to follow though

cerulean talon
#

Oooh, Good point.

#

Stupid laws, I just want to chill with my homies. ;.;

late basalt
#

but if you had a big enough parcel though, you might be able to get them to let you subdivide the exterior edge into smaller parcels

#

and basically "rent" or w/e those parcels out to people

cerulean talon
#

Yeah, I'll have to look at that.

#

Alternatively, I just build one big "house"

late basalt
#

with long-ass hallways separating "condos"?

cerulean talon
#

And put up 600 sqft "sheds" as workspaces. 😛

late basalt
cerulean talon
#

"No, no, the couch sleeps 4, want to see?"

late basalt
#

the only downside for me though, is i'd probably be spending ~30k on the parcel out here

#

unimproved

#

and it's so far out in the boonies it's septic/well

cerulean talon
#

See, I WISH I could get land that cheap.

#

That pricing is not a problem for me to consider.

late basalt
#

true

cerulean talon
#

The availability of internet is.

late basalt
#

i bet

#

be like that one guy that made his own ISP

cerulean talon
#

I'm planning on it.

#

I've got all the gear for it already xD

late basalt
#

all because ATT wanted to charge like 50k to run internet to his house

cerulean talon
#

I dunno, I'm still working out where I want to live.

late basalt
#

or something fucking stupid like that

cerulean talon
#

Wyoming is my current rhoguht but we'll see.

#

I really want to be north and cold, but really anything with land I can put solar on really

late basalt
#

i'm down in america's penis

cerulean talon
#

Ah yes, my birthplace.

late basalt
#

but fwiw the area i'm staying with family in also happens to fall into a qualifying area for USDA mortgages

#

so that's definitely an option as long as it's something affordable

#

quite a few down payment programs available too, so i wouldnt be entirely on the hook for a year's salary on signing

cerulean talon
#

Nods

#

I should look for land again soon.

#

I'm so tired of tiny little suburb lots.

late basalt
#

🤔

#

huh

#

apparently the lot literally two down the road has been for sale for the last half a year

cerulean talon
#

Hahah.

late basalt
#

31k though

#

i just hate the fact that i'd be spending probably another half of that just clearing the lot enough to build on

#

but, back to hobbies n shit, i'd love to eventually be able to slap down a sheet of leather and come back to perfectly cut pieces with stitching lines that are 100% accurate and ready to dye and assemble

#

rather than spending 30 minutes cutting out a single set by hand, and have to punch out hundreds or stitching holes by hand

cerulean talon
#

Some day I'll find the perfect lot xD

#

And yeah, laser cutting heads aren't super expensive tbh.

late basalt
#

nah, i'm looking at maybe 90 for a 5w one

#

the upgraded heads are the reason i'm looking at switching out the control board anyways

#

anything over 1W tends to be fixed focus

#

so i'd want to have z-level control of some sort

cerulean talon
#

nods I'm planning on slapping a smoothieboard into mine at some point.

late basalt
#

and super fine z stepping would work great

This is sick. I’m not a fan of the wooden design, but the shape of the chassis is way better than PlayStations current take, imo

#

PlayStation could have gone with a full mate white rim, and brush aluminum (fake) top/bottom

#

Almost like the Mac mini

#

IMO it even looks more modern than what Sony has going with the PS5. Their current look is very pseudo futuristic

sly elk
#

IDK what to call the current look

#

I wanna say it's very not sony

but aside from the PS1 I am not sure any of the playstations have had what I would call a sony look to them

2000-4000mm/min (i think) speed for engraving, depending on how deep i want the black, and 4 passes at 100 to cut. leaves the edges super crispy though playdead

astral ridge

High risk transactions will frequently have the funds held for a period of time if it’s Visa, MasterCard, a payment gateway, a bank - whoever

dreamy nacelle
#

How is it high risk if it hasn't been an issue ever

#

Like ever

#

Never ever ever

astral ridge
#

So, this is how it works - the basics

#

There is a system. A really f****g complex system that is shared between banks, credit card companies, gateways, merchants, basically everyone.

And it uses a huge amount of information to determine the risk of every single transaction.

dreamy nacelle
#

It has nothing to do with me when I have never charged anything back ever on any of my accounts.

astral ridge
#

It could get a high score for reasons that have nothing to do with you

dreamy nacelle
#

Then they should be able to cancel the dispute cause it doesn't exist and will never exist from my bank

astral ridge
#

It could have to do with the seller, or the product, or a random surge in fraud from an area you are in or a bank you use - it can be anything

inland mauve

that's the problem with these automated systems, there is zero transparency on them and they can seriously fuck you over if the numbers just line up wrongly

Why do I have to lose an account I've had since 2017 and contact with people I will never be able to find on a new account because of something that has nothing to do with me

astral ridge
#

My company gets the scores on all our sales. We get a numeric score from 0.1 to 99 (99 is the worst) to tell us what the likely hood of fraud is.

But they absolutely do not tell us WHY.

Unless it’s an address mismatch or a payment method not in the country of the shipment, etc

inland mauve
#

sadly because they don't care, the number of instances of fraud that the system prevents outweighs the false positives for them, and they don't give a shit about the impact of a false positive as long as it's not them

astral ridge
#

If we go ahead and ship to a really high number, the payment will likely be held for a while.

Well, not anymore, because our company is old. But that’s how it works for most.

its LTT 101, and why he's so despised by anyone in the tech space who actually knows what they are talking about.
they Insist on doing shit all themselves as jankily as possible because it gets clicks, instead of talking to and actually talking advice from professionals.

#

business as usual for LTT, nothing ever changes.

#

may cost tens of thousands of dollars, but most of their infrastructure implementations, are fucking atrocious, meant to appeal to your average employee at best buy and the geek squad 😛

When swapping out for a new CPU, do I do the BIOS update before or after the swap?

I don't think it matters?

wait, are you using BIOS flashback?

okay if you aren't or are not sure how to, do it before

frozen bolt

okay, ez money

void dove

always before

#

otherwise, you maybe left with a non-booting system, since they may have added support for the newer cpu in the update, and then have to put the old one back in (or use flashback if the mobo supports it)

#

they never remove CPU support, so doing it the other way around, makes no sense anyway.

never again will i get a fucking samsung monitor in my life. or TV

#

my odyssey G7 just sucks
great that, on paper, everything is nice but actually using this piece of shit. omg
not even just mad about the scanlines anymore but how sometimes it fails to wake up and just displays a black screen until i restart it
or how sometimes when games enter fullscreen mode, the monitor displays it as usual but then says it cant detect a signal and shuts off again
or how it takes 300 years to turn on
or how you cant enter the OSD to turn off the monitor because for some fucking reason it doesnt have a dedicated power button so after you disconnecting/powering off a source it gets stuck in a blackscreen and you cant access it until it finally complaints about having no signal
