wtf is stem ginger
"stem ginger is young ginger that has been peeled and preserved in sugar syrup"
sigh one thing about space work is the amount of legal nonsense you have to read as part of annual "training"
I think writing software for medical devices is even worse about that, though
Nah.
You just have to go through HIPAA training and general legal discloures every year or two.
Medical software is largely HIPAA and that's about it.
I'm sure if you ended up w/ pacemaker development or something it'd be worse, but it's a pretty limited set of things that would fall into that space.
That new AR headset from Apple certainly was something
I expect it to sell approximately 10 units.
Because $3,500 is ridiculous, even for Apple.
It'll sell pretty well tbh.
It's not that expensive for a business looking to explore the space and if it integrates well into the ecosystem, it's a no-brainer for a higher-end apple shop.
But memes aside, yeah. I can't see this being used outside of businesses due to the price tag.
That or Enthusiasts.
Like. The average consumer won't be able to afford something like that out of pocket.
Apple already jumped that shark when they announced a $1000 monitor stand
I mean shit
think about this: $3500 for top of the line advanced technology crammed into a wearable package. Vs.. $1000 for a damn hunk of metal
this thing was made for businesses
why they're marketing to consumers is beyond me
the way they're handling the launch and calling it 'pro' makes me think similar-ish
that it's a business prospect of "get in on the ground floor now! Buy one so you can develop software for it before others do and make some $$$$"
it was launched at WWDC
"anyway here's all the disney+ stuff you can do with it"
i wanna see what the other tech companies clap back with
assuming they even see this as a threat
Someone's got to develop the software for this thing, and "consumers" is a variable term here. Technically, this is a developer conference (Even if it's a press release/marketing this for every apple consumer), so it's not surprising at all they'd be marketing this here.
With it's overall specs, offhand the only thing I can think to compare it to would be those big massive 8k setups for VR, which are even more comically expensive and are 100% a business only item.
Yea, I think the way apple introduced it, they may not even be sure what the market for it is yet
it is a device that cannot exist, made for no-one
or rather
that they think they can address the shortcomings microsoft, valve, and meta had with their devices (also htc, samsung, etc)
it's one of those things
Tbh, the biggest hold back in VR IMO is the lack of software.
like I was saying earlier, they weren't the first at all for things like tablets, portable media players, smart watches, smart phones, etc
they usually just came in with a slightly different take and/or better tech and/or a design that was more popular
Apple has a /massive/ community of very dedicated developers who can jump to a native VR device, already in the ecosystem, with a support structure, monitzation path, and /most/ importantly, an iron-fist grip on the hardware architecture.
now, I personally think of the existing tech
I thought hololens was head and shoulders better than the other stuff
but even MS kinda gave up on it
Everything I've heard about optimzing for quest vs index vs quest pro, vs hololens, etc is absolute death.
Imagine if you could compact all of those into a single unified architecture, limit the hardware variances, etc.
but if there's one thing i've learned in my like 25 years of being a computer nerd, it's that MS just doesn't do hardware
That's what apple offers no-one else does.
like when MS does hardware they're usually making these wild gestures like
"hey dell, come on, copy this, here's the idea we had for you"
I think that might be way they kinda gave up on hololens lol
maybe they thought dell and asus and toshiba and lenovo would come along and make pseudo-hololens setups and they'd just pivot and sell the software architecture
Hololens was a neat idea, but it again, lacked software.
Minecraft was their big selling point to consumers, and I don't think they ever got glass-level buyin from corporate customers.
Hrm, I feel like writing some really suffering software, like trying to get a new version of face tracking software for vtubers or something. I don't like this mood.
afaik hololens had some neat applications in surgery & assembly techs and stuff like that
Yeah, the issue is glass beat em to the punch, was lighter, smaller, etc.
the fun thing about buying an amd cpu and then a week later, an amd gpu
2 free games lol

was that house filled in between 2 existing houses?
hello fellas
back again asking for help, I'v been looking at network card (even tried to remove the one on my desktop successfully), and I've been wondering if there is a brand/a specific one I should go for? Cause I'm used when it comes to this to be flooded by cheap knock-off versions that tend to not perform as well
(aside the wi fi 6 thing)
I'm not sure what is available where you live, but out here in the US the typical brands for things like that are netgear, d-link, eh tp-link and asus should also be ok for pcie wifi cards
ultimately they're just a carrier board for a realtek, atheros, or intel chip anyway
@old jetty there are two ways you could go about this. One is to buy another PCIE card. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Archer-TX55E-Bluetooth-Ultra-Low/dp/B0B1NRGDQ4
TP-Link AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Bluetooth 5.2 PCIe Adapter - High Performance for High Demands. The very latest WiFi standard, Wi-Fi 6, provides extreme speed, ultra-low latency, and uninterrupted connectivity so you enjoy faster downloads, smoother streaming, and more immersive gaming. Wi-Fi 6 comes with ...
oh, ye, it's the one I was looking at
another possibility
https://www.amazon.com/Intel-Wi-Fi-Gig-Desktop-AX200-NGWG-NV/dp/B085M7VPDP
You could get one of these and either stick it in one of your motherboard's m.2 slots.. or get an m.2 adapter
it's possible your existing network card might even be a carrier card for an m.2
they look something like that
that particular one: https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Wireless-Adapter-Dual-Band-Antenna/dp/B0BCK9Y9LW
you can probably also find a number of options on amazon or ebay or whatever that are some combo of those 2 items lol
got a pic?
chances are you could just buy a new m.2 card like that intel one and pop it into the holder
ehh I'm not sure that one's holding a m.2
I'll just got for a PCIe normal one and call it a day the
aye 🙂
This one is like 30% off too where I am, so should be fine, and worst case scenario I can just send it back trough amazon
and yea that N300 is a cheapie
no worries, good luck! 🙂
The best kind

6700xt's working like a dream so far
@real edge Ended up finding one for less than the 3060tis I showed you a while back
3060ti dropped quite a bit lately thanks to the 4060ti
down to 330 euro or so
im glad
no driver issues?
nope
PowerVia would be crucial for making the smaller, less power-hungry chips that are part of Intel’s road map debuted in 2021. It would move all power rails to the back of the chip, bringing power directly to the components that need it instead of routing it around the side and up into an “increasingly chaotic web,” to borrow Intel’s phrasing, of layered power and signal wires, as is done now.
they weren't already doing this?
what the fuck was the point of LGA besides having more ways for motherboards to fuck up during shipment
your gpu is fine
when is fine enough
I mean, has it stopped you running any games on decent settings yet?
and I don't count badly optimised shit
lack of video ram in cyberpunk
yes
I had pretty high settings on, rtx, dlss and it was fine
maybe my cpu made a difference
how is that going to make a difference to video ram usage
well I meant to me getting decent fps with the settings I had
Higher pin density
Mmmmm. More pins.
If only 3/5ths of all pins weren't used for power and ground. 😄
like seriously if you're gonna spend $3499 on something with a 4090 and a 13600kf .. and then buy 1000 chicken nuggets for shits n giggles
buying a 4090 to play games in the first place sounds like a spend $3500 on an apple headset anyway
they probably spend that much on fortnite microtransactions anyway
https://i.imgur.com/VhLlKqb.png it's hot 😦
88 in freedom units
sorry ice 😦
lmao his classmates are the ones that are screwed up in the head
what did you do
NOTES!
Wow, saying that !hank doesn't work. Smh.
As if it needs to summon anything else.
!hank
Just come to linux, you can complain about dozens of other things instead.
yep
oh yep yep
I don't use linux at home because I spend a lot of time using it at work
but also, I never write code on a windows machine if I can help it
which is probably a bit of a loss because afaik MS has very sane UI libraries
and great documentation
and amazing developer tools
otoh I've seen people become reliant on visual studio & intellisense & inline debugging and stuff and .. i mean it's great and all... but people use it like a hammer
where everything starts looking like a nail
I guess it's still better than getting the java enthusiast that always uses java to solve every problem
Tbh, I'm super happy I moved all my dev stuff to my desktop
My YT consumption/etc has dropped massively, and I'm getting back into the flow of just /working/ a bunch to catch up on projects.
Analysts I have been telling for the past year I'm here to develop stuff to make their annoying tasks easier, finally tell me last week they've been spending upwards of 5hrs a day manually going through threat list IPs finding 95% of them already on the blocklist 🤦♀️
Spent 3hrs this afternoon importing their blocklist and generating a whitelist to match on, leaving only the handful of un-evaluated IPs remaining...
Given a few more hours I can automate it to format and add the daily evaluated IPs to the blocklist and upload it to the edge router automatically...
Gah, I'm so impatient
It will be nearly the end of month when I can start purchasing components for my new PC
Soon(tm)
you mean you shouldn't use jscript to make a fucking server management tool?
so question
got a new network adapter, and beside plugging it in in the PCIE port, it also requires to plug a cable to a F_USB connector on the motherboard?
can I just connect it to the PCIE port and call it a day?
so ye, gotta connect both
weird that my previous network card didn't have an usb cable
There's probably good reason for that
I mean, of course, 1 volt doesn't travel very far in the high density environment.
Doesn't mean it doesn't feel execessive most of the time.
Is what it is
They probably have more than they need in there just in case they ever end up releasing some super-high tdp part down the road
Not wrong, the pinouts on FPGA's are wild because of the power density requirments.
Some of them need like 12 different voltages. 😄
🥴

Hang in there
PITA to design boards for, but multi-layer copper makes it way easier.
IIRC that card has Bluetooth. The usb might be for that.
Yea looking at the manual for a similar card, it’s for the Bluetooth chip
ah, thank you
i'm sure you've already experimented but if you don't need the bluetooth and don't have a free internal usb header to use, i think that you won't break anything if you don't use it.. it just won't have bluetooth, that's all
tbh it's funny they didn't just stick a usb controller on the card since it's pcie lol
gotta keep them costs down somehow, right? 😄
you know what bugs me on a similar nature? On new motherboards, they're starting to use USB for the audio stuff, too!
my msi x670e carbon is using a realtek chip that internally connects via usb
What kind of onboard sound are they using for that
it's pretty funny because that board has a number of audio jacks on it

I wonder if it's an issue with the chip itself, or if manufacturers just are doing a shit job at implementing it
same, not after I got an interface with a good dac, anyway
but now I wonder what it sounds like
the audio on my maximus xi hero was great
iirc that used a realtek 1220 and an ESS DAC
My ITX board advertised good onboard but, it ended up being worse than a 4 dollar usb C dac I got off aliexpress
We havnt had good on board mobo dacs since the dawn of time
It's depressing
God bless sound blaster cards tho rofl
Which interface did you end up getting :3
I started using HDMI audio into a soundbar because every single sound card I ever owned would degenerate into blasting static out of my RCA jacked speakers
I got an audient evo 4
Damn that's a nice one
Only got it since I needed more gain on my specific mic
(And was the only interface that seemed small enough to bring with me without being a burden)
@_@
I also got a scarlet because I'm a basic bitch
I did not enjoy my sound randomly turning from 🎶 to SSSHHHHHRRRRKKKKSHSSHHHSHSHRHHHHKKKKK
happened to sound blaster cards and audien
I'd get the scarlet solo, but I might end up getting a second mic to mic up an guitar down the road
So I'd need two XLR inputs
Yeaah
Nylon guitars don't traditionally have any instrument outputs
Not the ones I've looked at anyway
Also, how've you been, Sarah?

I'm allllive
Lol wtf is this image
But I rammed one of these pick ups in my guitar
Not bad not great but it's good enough for discord calls
My shitty lil Korean guitar thing lmfao
I love it tho
I can play music for my gf through discord and that's all I care
I see
Cute
Dabbling in it whenever I have the time and energy
Also dipping my toes into making some voice related stuff 🥴
Oo that's nice
My whole audio set up at home is just for screaming into the mic for discord
I see
lol 😄 I haven't even gotten good enough to dare record myself
i just ordered this actually >> https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1914453824
practicing arbitrary chords was fine, and practicing tabs of a favorite song or two is also ok, but I feel like I'm missing stuff and I get hints of it when practicing but still...
the ESS that Asus used on that board is the same DAC you'd find in a lot of those USB external boxes. The bigger problem is noise isolation, and also how they route the analog connections from the DAC to the minijacks
i've heard before that even the best power filtering doesn't help with the noise produced by the cpu VRMs
otoh, the only time I ever recall having a noisy headphone jack was on a cheap ECS motherboard I got off ebay for $30 back in the pentium 3 days
and curiously, I'm not sure anyone ever bothers to take care in how they route their headphone jack cable from the motherboard connector to the front panel of their case.. makes me wonder if people are tying it to their 24v cable or something and then getting a shocked pikachu feeling
heh. This has me wondering if you'd have better results making your own front panel connector that goes straight out the case instead of going to the panel that has USB ports and stuff
all I know is most people that cite a noisy headphone jack and use an expensive DAC end up using a bus powered DAC anyway
You know, that might be interesting
Makes me wonder if some sort of kit to add some sort of dac solution to your front panel audio would work
the only way to get digital audio out of the motherboard is if you have a toslink jack or a coax digital jack
some boards still do toslink, very few still have the coax ii think
I also wonder about that realtek 4000 series sound quality issue
I wouldn't be surprised if some of the issues are that the driver isn't getting high enough priority on USB
I'm thinking, just use a usb header for the signal and power
usb bro
oh you want to just use a usb dac/sound chip inside the case? yea you can do that lol
you might still run into the same noise issues though
Uh what pickup is that lol
That image doesn’t not let me see
A lot of cases use usb 3 headers, leaving the usb 2 headers on most boards empty
hehe that's a feature i would pay extra for on a motherboard, an abundance of internal usb headers
Honestly, it's probably reasonable enough to be able to fit this in a separate adapter that terminates into a front panel audio connector
Just get an internal USB hub, they certianly exist.
Usually take a 3.5" power header and a USB-2 internal and give you like 3 more.

I like how tech press is calling it "Proton-like" when it requires a quite a fair bit of setup
if you have an android device you're already advertising you don't get unsolicited nudes
I wish that was true
Unfortunately redditors don't know what device I'm using
But they know I'm a girl
why not send them someone ele's dick bak and ask if they like yours too
I mean, if you get a library of em you can just play grindr for reddit
Lol

The secret to the Kia Boys lies inside the steering column of Kias, manufactured between 2011-2021, and Hyundais, built between 2015-2021. Tucked away beneath the ignition cylinder is a tiny knob ideally suited for any USB to turn and start the ignition.
good gravy, who designed this and why aren't they wearing concrete shoes at the bottom of the sea of japan
I hope it will work better than Clive

With that, we’ve created a pretty amazing panel! The Framework Laptop 16 has 2560x1600 resolution, a 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, variable refresh rate up to 165Hz, 9ms rise+fall time, 1500:1 contrast, and an unusually high 500 nit brightness. We’re also using the same matte top surface that is on the new matte display in the Framework Laptop 13. All of this means that instead of having to choose between a gaming panel (fast response and refresh rate), a creator panel (high resolution, wide color gamut, and high contrast), or a general productivity panel (high brightness and matte surface), you get a single panel that excels at all three.
I enjoy when they do stuff llike this
One change we’ve made from the Framework Laptop 13 is that we’ve designed the Display Cable (an eDP cable) to detach from the display side in addition to the system side, making swaps even faster.
and it only costs $3000
necessarily unreasonable*
considering that dell charges like $2500+ for a precision 7xxx workstation laptop
if this has hardware like that, I could see it costing that kind of money
and it'd be a better buy because down the line you can just replace the motherboard or even worn out chassis parts instead of dealing with dell's gross chassis
@hard drift thanks a fucking bunch, the charger you told me to buy was doa
😒 how is that my fault
that's just bad luck
i haven't had any problems with it 😐
mmm
100% your fault
😐
you can always count on belkin to give you 'meh' performance and quality at a 'premium' price
that's the "I need a thing now, not in 2 days when amazon can deliver it" brand
i'm just convinced everything besides apple silicon is trash
objectively true
yea maybe so
For large companies like FAANG, I actually think they mostly fall in bucket 2. I worked at Meta remotely for a year. My instructions when I joined were something like "Yeah so just talk to a bunch of people and look for opportunities to contribute". WTF? No wonder remote is not working well for them. You had to go 5-6 layers up the reporting chain to find anyone with any sort of holistic sense of what needed to be done, and they were not exactly empowered to share that vision lest it conflict with someone elses.
damn they need more seniors that know how to delegate
to be fair, depending on how many people you have depending on your guidance, that can take a lot of friggin work lol
$3k isn't bad when you consider it's a more niche product with smaller production runs, the costs of engineering it to be modular, etc.
They can't just use commodity parts
yup
and it's modular!
It's the best! beats the rest! cellular! modular! interactiveodular!
but yea i mean shit it's a laptop made to be taken apart and put back together adn stuff
tbh i'd wanna get a framework 16 just to take it apart and put it back together haha
might even be interesting to buy the diy version
even neater if it came fully disassembled huh
is self assembly really that enticing?
you could just get an old thinkpad and download the hardware maintenence manual
maybe repair and the ability to keep current but the average laptop feels like it's 70% cost put into the mobo/cpu/gpu (which also is what goes bad unless the odm thought ahead and put charging regulation on a daughterboard in case it gets fried)
but that much money for whatever feels like a raw deal to me
i'd only really say that about acer laptops and maybe some lenovos
if you want a nice screen, nice keyboard, and nice trackpad, you're gonna have to fork up a little more $$
it sounds like that framework 16 has a pretty nice screen, but IDK about the keyboard or trackpad yet
my experience with laptops so far is that non-apple trackpads are awful
Its just adult Legos
Its like ikea furniture but u can accidentally destroy ur pc with static
So its like
High octane ikea
Not really
It teaches you how to assemble a computer from pre arranged parts
Teaches you nothing about how they work
if you just get the components handed to you
but you have to do research beforehand
You're gonna learn more and possibly have more of an interest than if you never put one together
In my years of building pcs I've never used a grounding strap or really even mindful of it and I've never ruined a PC. Highly unlikely that this happens
I mean, in that specific case there's a really good chance amazon sourced it from the same factory in shenzhen lmao
the basics line is literally amazon looking at sales trends and then doing an end-run around the name brand selling on their platform to buy directly from the OEM
I really like the 20$ Amazon basics computer speakers I bought last year. Surpriseded by the quality
I'm sure the company that supplies altec lansing or whomever appreciates that sentiment
I don't care what sentiment some corporate hack appreciates
more that amazon is a scumbag company and the basics line is a prime example of amazon exploiting their market position to push their products over their competitors
That much is obvious, but if there wasn't a market for it amazon wouldnt do it. Why should I pay more for name brand? I mean sure I like certain brands, but I was broke and needed some speakers
There's lots of scum bag companies worse than Amazon. Just the times, of course I'd rather go to a computer shop or best buy
it's kind of funny how best buy just sort of hunkered down and weathered the amazon storm
waited long enough for amazon to become the villain and now they're like "so, you guys want actually vetted stuff that we know definitely comes from the vendor and isn't a chinese counterfeit made by dthtnfxtdddtrdy@shenzhen"
Wait so if I buy like a legit zotac Nvidia 4070 for example, there's a chance it might not actually be an nvidia?
Could be a knock off?
from amazon?
Yeah
if you buy it from a third party vendor, there's no guarantee you'll even get a GPU, let alone one that works lmao
amazon's moderation is absolute fucking dogshit for their third party storefront
it's why zombie listings are such a problem, and store hijacking
When you buy off Amazon something like that it's usually Amazon by default right?
How do I make sure it's not 3rd party?
so you need to make sure that the vendor isn't just a bunch of random letters
for cheap stuff it's whatever, but I wouldn't buy a 4090 from UTRFDJRFG
pretty good bet you're going to get scammed if you do
if it doesn't say "sold by/shipped by amazon" it's a third party
for the most part this isn't a really big deal, but scams are increasingly common on amazon because they don't actually care to moderate any of that shit
Thanks for that info I had no idea about this stuff
that's why you'll see reviews suddenly switch from 5* "great product, worked as advertised" to "I got a dildo" or something
the listing got hijacked by a third party who turns it into a scam listing and sends junk under the previous item's listing
I usually buy name brand stuff never thought to look if it's shipped/sold by Amazon just assumed it comes from Amazon if you don't look through the list
Never been scammed on Amazon though I have fell for some cheap Chinese shit before
it's just something to look out for and why people are switching off amazon's platform
Got it ty
well, that and the fact that jeff bezos has enough money to dismantle an entire fucking bridge in the netherlands
and pay for it to be reconstructed after his giant $150 million mega yacht goes through
fuck jeff bezos
Lmfao
Maybe I'll see if I can get that 4070 via best buy
and this rich fuck just pays the city to dismantle it
nobody punishes them, so why wouldn't they
reminder that a rich kid committed a bunch of crimes and the courts acquitted him because they thought he was too rich to understand that what he did was wrong
I am once again asking you to raise the guillotines
Best buy has 4070's available for less than Amazon, only problem is I don't trust FedEx or UPS so maybe I'd go to the one nearby and see what they have
I don't think the bridge was actually disassembled in the end, too much protest against it
fortunately the NL isn't as dependent on Amazon because we have so many other webshops that deliver a similar level of service
Why a 4070 specifically?
they probably just don't sell
4070 are in production and also probably your best buy rn for price performance
I was looking at an FE earlier but I might see if there's any dumb aib cards for the same money
do you really need an upgrade?
Shue that is none of your concern
The answer to this question is always yes.
Got one 4090? Of course you need to upgrade to 2! Got 2? Move to 4.
Ran out of PCI-E slots? Upgrade again!
Card definitely looks okay at the 600 dollar pricepoint
Assuming you're not paying more than that
it is my job to save you fuckers from yourselves
It's the best thing I can afford when my Honda 4 wheeler sells. Currently have a 6600 xt
Mostly around £590 here, but yeah
Same diff
That's fair enough
There are better options in the used market but, I'll just assume that you don't want to take any of the risks
I got a 6700xt from a contact and gave the 1660 super I had to my little brother recently

Exactly that. I don't trust people at that word when it comes to used cards, otherwise I'd be happy to go that route. Maybe if I knew the person
I'd yell at you about AMD but I know you have a different market there etc
Doesn't eBay tend to be pretty liberally pro buyer for the most part
Pretty much
3060tis are a good 100-200 dollars more
Either way
Got the card used, aside from somewhat concerning junct temps in stress tests it's been working perfectly so far
Aside from one or two issues with installing drivers when I first got the card
A used 3090 would be nice but my PSU is only 650w
Ahh.
Fair
Well, the difference only ends up manifesting in higher resolutions, it seems like
Shue, I wanna complain and need a hug
I can give you a singular emote headpat
My stupid ass boss just threatened my ass at work

oof
I don't wanna get fired again
Ebay can be hit or miss on cards, because there's no way to tell if it's been used for mining everyday or not until you install it in your rig. Only thing you got to go on is seller rep
I have a serious bad luck with shitty bosses
Being used for mining isn't a big deal fwiw
Mining generally has been proven to not really impact cards
Aside from higher wear on the fans themselves
Gaming causes more "wear" (not a real thing) to the cards
Still , you don't know how they treated the card
it's awful that I have to give you this advice, but try to suck it up, save as much as possible and get the fuck out of that country
It doesn't matter
Miners tend to downclock and undervolt the actual core since Ethereum mining was more vram constrained
Yeah it was to do with memory speed
Yeah I might do that
Doesn't silicon wear out? Idk exactly how that effects it tho
Not really, specially not at the power targets miners went for
Fair enough, I may consider looking on eBay then
eBay should cover you for 30 days, money back guarantee. Unless you're getting a great deal you're probably best off going new, though
just get your arse to somewhere you're just treated horribly for being trans, not actively persecuted
You can run into issues if you ever physically mod the card and pump more voltage than is healthy for the chip, but that's moreso an extreme overclocking thing
Well I guess Germany is nice
I would 100% avoid used LHR cards, JFYI.
it does sound like a good option to consider, do you speak any German?
Miner software was specifically written for them to abuse the way LHR worked, and heavily abused both vram and compute cores by splitting the work into 2 seperate algos.
I've got my amd dialed in to where it doesn't fuck with my sleep settings, good enough for now and I stopped windows from reinstalling the drivers every time I blink but I just want an nvidia card. I loved my 750 ti and my 1060
I wish
get on duolingo
I can only speak English and Canadian
It gets memed a lot here but Nvidia just werks compared to amd
And British and Australian!

Too true
Only thing I wished I had was a better encoder, but I'm fine using my CPU for that
Now that I know what to do with my amd 6600 xt I'm happy with it
if you go for duolingo you can get cheap premium if you use a vpn and pick turkey
What CPU u got? 5600x here
3700x
Ah I had a 3600
I have a 5600X, great chip
It's in my dad's pc
I'd upgrade but, there isn't really a market for used 5800x3ds yet
Plan on 5700xd
5950x is nice, just a toastyboi.
Came from a 2600 which was dog doo doo
And that's the only chip that'd get me to step up
Yes 5800xds or w/e like bis?
For gaming, yeah
They're not significantly better for pure compute
I'm so glad AMD went for comically high levels of L3. Makes life so much more fun.
I've seen them for £280 new
Can probably sell your 5600x off for 80-100
But for the jump from a 5600X... Eh
They're still 350ish minimum in my markets
I'll put it in my dad's PC along with my 6600
Yeah lmfao and all he does is watch YouTube
He's got basically my old computer right now
32gigs 3600mhz cl 18 3600x 1060 6gb b450m
Tbh, this is the way, upgrade family, then friends whenever you upgrade.
Gets alot of favors over the years. 😄
Why do you want a 4070 again?
Shiny
the 7900xt is like what
smh
800$?
To upgrade my 6600xt cuz it feels like dogshit sometimes
or less
Its 780 USD right now
20gb of vram
I suppose... but I don't really have a vpn on phone, besides I think I'm fine
there are free chrome vpn extensions
I was just looking at toms hardware gpu tier
Power consumption: yes
7900xt is close to their high end right now
ye
I think the 7900xt is better value than the 4070 but
amd is always a risk
I'm going Nvidia again fuck it
Nvidia is surprisingly good even on linux at this point.
Those two cards are 180 bucks apart, I wouldn't compare the two
I'm sorta shocked how well it's working, as classically, it's some of the worst pain you can dream of.
I like that amd is built into Linux, that's what my dad's PC uses is linux
7900xt definitely makes more sense than a 4070ti if raster is the only thing you cared about
I was seriously looking into swapping to a 7900xt for my desktop, but it's super happy on linux atm w/ a nvidia card, so it gets to stay for awhile.
Do you use mint?
Endeavour, which is based on arch.
And I'm pretty sure a bunch of my audio software just straight up will refuse to work due to DRM if I make the move
Well I need to put windows on my dad's PC honestly so I can buy actual games for her
Gotta have your uwufetch ofc.
You can try proton
Steam runs pretty well w/ proton if you keep them within there on linux.
Its not perfect
If you go off steam it's kinda spotty.
What's proton
Steam's "Play windows games on linux" system.
I like things just working so I'll stick with windows and have them collect all my telemetry
Windows and I have serious issues when it comes to software development. 😄
Windows is stinky and stuff like my file explorer hangs up on me sometimes
I might have to do a reinstall at some point
Windows task manager also crashed regularly on me.
Clean your caches before you do that
Which is amazing in it's own way.
That being said, I'm an old bitter linux sysad anyway, so I'll take my annoying cli config files any day.
Might be time to try tiny11
Tbh, I just used a pro license and disabled everything via gpo.
More correctly, I made my roomie write me a massive GPO to shove onto my box, got annoyed, then eventually jumped to linux as 90% of my PC time is development and text edtors anyway.
I wish proton wasn't so spotty with some of the games I play
It still doesn't play well with anticheats last time I checked
No, it doesn't, because linux is like "lulz, your ring-0 access doesn't exist, meet uid0"
Warms the heart that this crap still exists
I remember using lite versions of XP bitd with my toaster pc
Multiplayer is the biggest issue though in general, so I keep a windows box up on the rack for stuff like destiny 2.
I don't have another box, so windows stays
Sometimes they stripped too much out, so I had to reinstall a bunch from my retail disc
Sensibly.
Is there any way to try and strip my current installation
I have many boxen. They love me (Not really)
There's several w11 de-crapifiers designed to be run post-install.
I might spend the time to dig through and clean it up if that's possible
Ah
Oh, I'm on w10 right now
Same should exist for 10 tbh.
Yeah, most of 11 is 10 under the hood, just polished with some 24 grit sandpaper.
I hope it doesn't end up fucking with my audio software DRM somehow
Unlikely, usually they use janky self-managed mechs.
We'll see
I just remembered why I dislike German language
Mein vs meine
Gendered nouns all the way down
yeah my daughter has been doing german for a couple of years at school and she's not picking it for GCSE, she's teaching herself spanish instead
isn't it a consistency with pre/suffixes for actual gendered terms?
I'm not a language expert so I'm just talking out of my ass
but it seems like the kind of rudimentary logic that would underpin a language developed 250+ years ago
Pretty sure germanic has been around since 100-200 BCE
this might be a first, ed admitting he's not an expert on something
ngl
Ever since I've gotten my new gpu, the most I've done with it is enjoy just how much faster my shaders run in gpose
Funny thing about English it’s a Germanic language with strong French influence but both French and German have gendered language(I don’t know if Dutch does) and English doesn’t
English seems to like stripping down words, so maybe that got left on the cutting board over time
A lot of common words today used to have a lot more letters in them as middle or old English.
I'm a bit slow to notice but like
apple's vision trailer is such a well-produced meme
what problem does this thing solve
at least microsoft demonstrated how hololens had practical use in industry jobs
it solves the practical problem of Apple not having enough money despite already having a lot of money
TBH, I think Microsoft didn't know for a while either
IIRC the "practical use in industry jobs" thing happened after a little while
and IIRC MS laid off a bunch of people that worked on it
Shut up Musky boy
he's right about Nvidia's virtual policy, but that's more because AMD is run like a circus
everything else however
I don't think that the man who is single-handedly running Twitter into the ground is qualified to predict future tech trends
Tbh, they already exist, so he’s not wrong. The issue is that they’re not publically available
Nvidia has a death grip on publically available chips for that because tf’s public code targets cuda, but it’s just fine running on googles specality tf coprocs
Realistically it just takes someone seriously willing to target amd chips, rewriting tf and other ml languages, then amd shoving more vram into a dc card
As long as cuda remains the standard though, we’re not going to see much public innovation, though cerberas? That wafer scale chip might be interesting
Amd actually got strong in the cpu market what’s going on in their GPU’s
More like, AMD OEM GPU is ok (ps5 and le deck) but AMD GPU on windows is brug
Also
Yesh got le deck
But gotta get microSD and a hub for docking or at least get my keeb
Time to get a 1tb internal nvme
Bought 64GB edition
Upgraded to 500GB NVMe
Mostly bc I want to opti works/stuff installed on NVMe to not gaming too much
New work no gamin PC so need deck
Yeah, kinda the way I’m going, I game more on my switch than my desktop now
Ya I tried MHR on deck
Holy s it feels good
The rest would be some basic stuff like flatseal OBS office suit etc etc later on after I get my blueberry keeb
Dunno may get MHW LOL but need microSD first
I slapped a 1tb in mine, seems nice enough
Ya 1tb is gud
Tho I need to check if any available in my place
Btw what's the criteria for a microSD with high read/write?
O nice
Sandisk 1tb extremes
Iirc the Samsung 512s are slightly faster, but it’s not loading super slow in any case
screm in price
Vary from 50 to 120 freedom currency
https://www.nshop.com.vn/collections/the-nho-cho-nintendo-switch/Thẻ-nhớ-cho-Switch
Even not 1TB tho
Yeh :/
I plan to get a 120-ish GB just to migrate mu games to it first, then reset le deck so it'll be fully mine (ahem linux rule lel)
My place ain't support steam deck just yet so it was from a reseller, I plugged out their steam acc but still want the whole system to be mine tho
If there was a good way to ship it I’d drop one in the mail xD
But ngl the design is good tho
Oddly light and balance even in baby hands
Tbh, it’s a little awkward with big hands
Buttons and joysticks are a little closer than I’d like
Ya those are a tad closer compared to standard xbox and ps controller
Back buttons require an awkward curl of fingies too
The stock buttons and sticks feels really good, I like it more than the beeg boyos
Prob just the distance between pad and stick is a bit awkward
I do want to do the Hall effect swap on the joys
No drift yet, but preventative maintenance
Ah, fair tho
!hank
maido
!hank
Needs more purple smh.
Was wondering why I was having issues with my mic
Turns out my XLR cable was barely touching one of my power cables
AMD drivers on windows have been fine on my end, lol
Being able to tune my gpu in-app instead of having to get afterburner's been nice.
Genuinely has been a better experience than my last NV card, minus the slightly worse encoder
AMD's a bit whacky on windows IME, but it's way better on linux, so it's a tradeoff. shrug
Zero issues with 6xxx so far
Ya the only grip I have is encoder and software support tho
On linux it's wayyy better, plan to do the AM5 APU build for mah tiny linux
I know 5700xt launch was rocky, but that's a long time ago
But man the navi efficiency is p mindblowing
Haven't heard of any issues with drivers on the rx580 a sibling had before I gave them my old card either
My 6700xt runs at about the same wattage my 1660 ran at after an undervolt
NANI??
Well, a bit more than that but
I set my 1660 OC undervolt just for the sake of powerdraw and yeeeee
150w max
For a beef card datz gud tho
It's great
Meanwhile 40xx
SFF peepo crai
Imma say like MAN
Look at the 4090
Look at the itx motherboard
Mannnnnnnnnnnn
165wish max load in FFXIV with shaders and 8k resolution on, still performs about twice as fast as my old 1660 super that was overclocked
the 4090's still fairly efficient
it's just that it's got so much crammed into the chip that it still draws 400-500w at peak
Mmmm. Transistors.
tightly packed, crammed in there..
honestly
if nvidia wasn't so stingy with VRAM and actually had well priced cards, they could easily have not been the target of hate
Tfw the reference card is mostly radiator
but they have no reason to care given just how much money their server division is raking in
i miss evga
Eh ngl, if I complete setup steam deck as personal machine, Imma transform my current machine to a minecraft machine for my cousin
Not really want to waste parts but then weirdge 1660
And yes, evga gud, their price is also reasonable compared to Asus tho
That's so PRETTY.
their logo's still odd but that's a neat tower
i found a 4080 for only £850 yesterday but of course they cancelled the order and said it was an error... so lame
to get dual channel on this board what slots do i install my ram to?
a1 and b1 or a1 and a2?
the manual will probably contain a recommendation
read the motherboard's manual
its usually alternativng slots, but not always
it does and
usually it's either a1 and b1 or a2 and b2, depends on how the channels are set up
my motherboard even has it screen printed on the board lol
My bet is a2 and b2
the answer to most,"how should i use x product" RTFM
But yeah rtfm
manuals exist for a reason 😛
so on this board it says channel a = a1 and a2
i just thought it was color coded
its black gray black gray
heh
well looks like i gotta open my case again >.<
you mean there are boards where each channel has the sticks next to each other?!
ive seen mobos, where they colour the slots you should use first
others where they colour the slots for each channel different
hence, the whole, check the manual
if they say, A is one channel, and B is another
see if it says there is a preferred install order
as some need a ram stick in a slot to boot
most likely you should use
a1 and b1
if what you said is correct
ok i will look at it again in my pc i dont remember which slots there in just that they were alternating
thanks
as long as they're in alternate slots
the A2 / B2 thing is just a recommendation, I don't know exactly why they recommend those over A1 / B1 but it probably won't make a big difference
well im gonna do what they recommend just to be a stickler
Glad I asked you guys, turns out they were installed in the first 2 slots
shue wins
the top table litearlly tells you what to do with 2 modules
Wait, we're supposed to read manuals?
If people read manuals, IT workers will be out of jobs in days!
IT workers are just the evolution of kids who read manuals
that reminds me, I still need to read through my car's
Ah yes, of course, executive knows best, right?
yep
ya know, paypal totally went to shit after ebay broke up with them
which is no surprise because why else would anyone use them?
Ah yes. "I think" except statistics say otherwise
This was said btw by Elon
Because you just can't talk about this without bringing up the Musky rat
I am much more productive at home, thanks Daddy Elon
I fucking knew it! This ain't about productivity at all
honestly I think these people just suck at explaining it in a practical manner lol
well, that combined with how they treat their employees
also I think Elon's opinions come from the viewpoint of spacex and tesla
but the business leaders can have their opinion, and the software engineers can have a different opinion, and that's ok
both opinions can be true and valid even if they contradict 😄
CEO: This is so convenient! I can just walk up to anyone I want to talk to, any time, during business hours!
they're not thinking about everyone's commute, parking struggles, or having to concentrate in a noisy, busy, stinky environment
they might find it easier/better when everyone's in the building with them
I've also heard about how it's better for juniors and interns to do their stuff in-person because they get more mentorship and stuff
so it may benefit the business but not the other employees lol

and i say that as someone who never wants to work in the office again >>
driving to work in the morning and driving home in the evening sucks ass
my last 2 jobs both said its better in person and it was not
the people there with me all just complained about being in the office and i wasn't any more efficient than if we had done this via teams
the only good thing about being on-site is to get your equipment so you can work from home
and there's nothing like the feeling I get when I drive from home to the office and the traffic stinks and there's some kinda anomaly that makes the traffic way worse than usual, and then I finally get there and there's nowhere to park so I have to go to the overload garage 2 blocks away
by the time I get in the office I'm already pissed off, ya know?
also I do have that feeling about smells
my last job made you pay about 10€ per day you wanted to park there
people eat stinky things for lunch and then don't use gum or mints or brush their teeth and you can smell it all afternoon
then the bathroom smells like a fuckign zoo
coffee breath
that, too
nothing like the smell of stale coffee and farts in a conference room
and in business, there's always the people who try to play the power game
like
I could put it on a bingo card hahaha
"you are more productive" said the person sitting in his single-person office, who you don't see all day
"i am so much more productive" said karen, during her 4th coffee break, where she spends a good 20min talking to colleagues about life and the world.

aggressive hand shaking, staring people down, using business jargon like "stake holder"
idk i hate the term 'stake holder'
buzzwords to seem important
also IRL meetings make me sleepy
especially when they dim the lights to run the projector
sleeeeeeep
at my company the conference rooms are a heavily contested resource so it's hard to get one
so any kinda informal meetings where you're doing pair programming or whatever have to happen at someone's desk
we have a big all-hands meeting once per month for my department and you have to sit there in a circle basically and pretend to be interested while someone talks about their issues in topics you have absolutely nothing to do with.
the first time i struggled a lot to not fall asleep
ah this is one thing I do like about the company i work for lol
the all hands is on webex
it happens in person as well, for those who wanna go in the big conference room to watch it
it also has a fairly consistent format
and a BBQ after the meeting
which I haven't been to in years because the parking sucks that day and also there's a group of coworkers who cook the food
and I don't know how I feel about their hygiene lol
but that's just me being silly 😄
I think it's cool they still do the BBQ
I also think that working from home I really do miss out on social stuff
but that's ok
when i was at gamigo they used to give around free beer and ordered large amounts of pizza and nuggets for that day
the meeting was still incredibly pointless and boring though because it was just CEOs talking about finances and flexing about so many profits before laying off more people
^ there's a reason I've stuck around this company for nearly 10 years lol
the only time they've ever laid people off, there was an actual serious financial speedbump
(it happened once and it was unsettling)
otherwise the company has been growing and scaling with the amount of work
!hank
woah this case is so beautiful, im so going to use this for my next pc https://www.awd-it.co.uk/components/cases/fractal-design-cases/fractal-design-terra-small-form-factor-mini-itx-pc-case-jade-and-walnut.html
IDK it reminds me of a 70s appliance but I like the green at least
so that setup even has the wood slat thing. this is becoming a meme isn't it
so... having a pc that looks like a 70s disco is better? IDK
i go into the office a day or two a week, wfh the rest. guess which days I actually get stuff done lol
the only people that advocate for working in an office when they don't need to... are bosses/owners with control issues and people who think socializing is being productive
What are you talking about? I'm joking about the wood slats on the wall
working from home only is pretty sad though, especially if you dont go outside and youre a gamer, you essentially dont exist, youre just a pixel somewhere on a server, nobody sees you or interacts with you. getting social interaction is also important for a healthy brain
Having wood slats on the wall doesn't mean you can't have a disco pc
use that extra time not commuting to go to the gym or do something better 😉
You xna put disco lights inside a fractal North too
im 35 and ive personally gotten a lifetimes worth of social interaction after the nightmare that was this past year. I honestly felt pretty lousy over the course of the pandemic for as little as I left the house, but man idgaf about people anymore. and I couldn't be happier about it
the vast majority bring me no joy, only bad
I agree
There are people who are a joy to be around
And people who are not such a joy
And commuting sucks. If my work was a quick like 5-10 min drive I wouldn't mind it so much
mines like a 30 minute drive absolute best case. if the weather is bad in the winter and traffic is bad too, can be like 1-2 hours
Yup
Mines 25 minutes in the morning if I get good timing, and about 35 mins in the evening
And on a bad day, easily an hour lol
ironically as much as I support working from home, no one even asked me to go in the days that I do currently. I just do it to make me look like more of a team player to any bosses that are a bit hung up on the idea lol
that and my being there does seem to perk up the people that are in the office more. i personally get absolutely nothing out of it
but again, that's about the sum of my experience with people lately. give a lot, get a little. good riddance. id rather be the server pixel
i used to not want to go in either and literally didnt go into the office for two years and one day i was bored and asked a girl to come in with me and we clicked from first day and spend time talking at a coffee shop after work and even want to meet on the weekends, if i just sat at home this wouldve never happened
yeah, if I tried that it'd end with a "that's weird, im married" and me beating myself up the rest of the day for saying anything
there are good points to social interaction. just not for me lol
there was a time I thought it was more important but nah. all I want is peace and quiet now
damn
my second pc just broke
gf was playing diablo, then it shut off and the fuse went out
now it smells really burned, cant pinpoint what exactly burned, but i guess its probably the psu
and ofc its just past the 5y warranty
yeah it smells like burned rubber kinda so i will check the cables
tbh not much of a loss given that its an i7 3960x and a 980
Sell the 980 to crypto bros

those times are over :/
OpenPleb is a new initiative to work with hardware manufacturers and get them to open up on the multitudes of proprietary hardware control specifications that plague the PC industry these days. Everything from sensors to RGB to power supply control is covered, but I'm most interested in how this will affect OpenRGB development.
In this video I...
Only worth if your electricity cost is nil or basically nil
cries in 40ct per kwh
Tons of people mine still, you can still get < .05$/kwh power here in the states pretty easily.
There's also alot of interest in using stackgas down in texas that's normally flared off.
You mean they're going to finally make the taskbar sane again?
SHOCKING.
Tbh, I'm getting used to a combined taskbar thanks to mac and linux unironically
It's just a bit weird still
Q u a l i t y
I just get cheap arctic fans or noctua
Pretty sure some people have noctua fans that've been running for a decade and a half at this point
I wouldn't mind combined taskbar if it didn't take 2 clicks every time I return to a multi-window app
it'd be nice if it activated the most recent window on first click tbh
I've been using windows 11 for a few weeks now, almost can't tell the difference but I do miss 10's start menu
and the task manager seemed to get switched up for no reason lol
yeah I actually kinda liked the Start menu tiles
i have all that turned offl ol
being able to make your own layouts is cool, it just sucks that literally no app bothered supporting it
the only one I noticed was spotify
ie. setting a background colour so it's not just the icon floating in a plain square
I'm only upgrading once I have to
I'm not seeing a channel specifically regarding the sub-reddit, so I'm not sure where else to post this. Any idea if the mods or such have considered moving to KBin and ditching reddit, or setting up a "temp" reddit-esque experience there in so long as Reddit is being Reddit? 🤔
IIRC they're some trial of that in #1116899335628668979 but not sure about a full rollout
Okay cool, thanks. o7
is kbin to reddit as mastodon is to twitter?
Yeah more or less. It's a fediverse alternative.
^ I hope that more communities try to find a reddit alternative besides discord
https://kbin.social/
Apparently there are other sub reddits looking at these alternatives as well. There's KBin, Lemmy, and Squabbles.io .
Explore Fediverse
Never need to deal with Reddit's BS ever again. No idea what hosting the service is like, of course. That's not in my wheel house, so it may not be practical I don't know.
I just know mastodon seemed a great idea that turned out to be impractical and insecure
isn't lemmy just mastodon?
ah, I still use Mastodon, but it's a PITA for the average user to get started on it.
honestly my twitter usage has basically not changed at all
Not so much because it's difficult to get going on Masto but because there are so many steps and quirks to deal with.
I used it for sports info/chat and it's still great for that
nvm it's not mastodon it just uses a system that you can use a mastodon account on there i guess
my twitter usage hasn't changed at all either 😄
I never used that shit in the first place
I signed up for an account eons ago, realized I had nothing worthy of tweeting about and didn't care what others were tweeting about.. and then found myself forced to use it to reach customer service for taco bell when they didn't answer their own emails >>
oh wow lol
a lot of city agencies also use it for like, breaking news updates
like the local police use it as a "hey this road is closed so don't use it" kinda thing
they also have a news feed on their website but i'v eheard of towns where it's all on twitter
but you don't have to have a twitter account to read those things so, whatever
True. Personally I just use for XIV things and streaming things.
yea I learned recently a lot of artists moved there from.. tumblr?!
and I can kinda see how that works better lol
kinda
Yeah lots of gpose, lots of artwork. That's pretty much what I follow on there.
yuea when the chips are down
people are in fact willing to support twitter
and I'm pretty sure the same will happen with reddit
and hmm tbh while the ceo of reddit is being a piece of crap about this
it still pales in comparison to elon & twitter lol
For that, reddit would need to fire the majority of their staff, unban all the banned users and publicly apologize for banning them, ridicule their former staff, etc.
it really isn't a joke how big corpos can't help turning either evil, or really stupid and out of touch
I guess it might be a surprise to younger social media users
when something's existed as long as you can remember, you naturally assume it'll always be there
fediverse might be a cool solution to that, but it's still kinda weird and nerdy atm
that's how things usually start on the internet
lol remember when discord decided to shun their 'nerdiness' to become more appealing to a mainstream audience?
oh yea, i saw that
no, the coins are for webtoons
ah I see
there are webtoons where if you want to see the latest few episodes, you have to pay
kind of a mixed bag that
that's a reasonable model ig
oh
and then you have to marry one device to your account
and you only can use the coins on that device & view the paid content on that device
if you change which device your account is paired with, then you lose your coins
also
there's a lot of webtoons where you have to unlock episodes and you get a free 'daily pass' after 7pm every day
to keep you from binging a webtoon for free -_-
and of course daily pass only works on the mobile app, too
you guys have phones, right?
it's annoying AF because the website is fine until you run into those things
yea, if discord was mobile-only I wouldn't be using it
yeah it's annoying when developers shun their websites for whatever reason
they do it for obvious reasons lol
despite the web being like. a better experience than mobile apps on average
on a computer you can do all sorts of tricks to obfuscate yourself away from their tracking and analytics crap
you can block ads, block javascript, limit DNS records, etcetcetc
on a computer, you're in control
ah yes, the user controlling their own device!
they don't want that
