deep sapphire
#

what year is the truck

hollow hamlet
deep sapphire
#

ah alright, yeah thats a pretty common issue when they get around 130,000 miles or more

#

oil sending unit gets clogged with shit or gets oily gunk in the sensor

hollow hamlet
#

Don’t tell me it’s the full 100 PaimonKnife

deep sapphire
#

yeah, though I think if you use an AC Delco brand scan tool you can reset the code (AC Delco is GM's part division)

#

just go for a cruise

umbral moss
#

is that why their AA batteries suck lmao

sly elk
#

cruze*

deep sapphire
#

LOL yeah their batteries are pretty bad but they are cheap af

sly elk
deep sapphire
#

I got like a 100 pack at Menards for like 12 bucks

hollow hamlet
#

It’s at 97,000 miles PaimonKnife

sly elk
#

yea those batteries are shit

deep sapphire
#

make sure you keep up on oil changes cause thats around when they added the active fuel management

umbral moss
sly elk
#

they leak just like duracells do

deep sapphire
#

and they dont like poor oil

umbral moss
#

project farm did a test and apparently energizer is the best value per dollar

sly elk
#

beats the hell out of paying amazon $45 for a chinese flashlight that uses sketchy looking li-ion cells

deep sapphire
#

or bring it here and I'll take it off and throw in the garbage

sly elk
#

and people are like

#

MY SCOIYUEFGWN SUPER LUMEN PUTS OUT 9500 LUMENS AND HAS GREEN LASERS

deep sapphire
#

energizer and duracell are worth the money

sly elk
#

ITS THE GREATEST EDC

umbral moss
#

just use a surefire torch pogianger

sly elk
#

and then they show me their like

#

pile of sketchy li-ions

deep sapphire
#

batteries really are "you get what you pay for"

deep sapphire
#

the battery banks

#

40,000 mah

#

!!!!

#

its like 8000

umbral moss
#

within reason, energizer lithium batteries are great but they're dogshit value per battery endure

sly elk
sly elk
#

I bought a cheap li-ion flashlight off amazon and it came with one of these inside

#

and the cheapest usb-c to usb-c cable on earth

#

also the usb-c socket is very... sketchy

umbral moss
sly elk
#

i wonder what happens if you stick it inside something with a battery door and then just leave it plugged in

umbral moss
#

13S3P wearycarby

sly elk
#

the best amazon review I saw recently was for some random power bank that could also be used as a jump starter for a car

umbral moss
#

you can make that yourself with a fucking soldering iron and some copper bars

deep sapphire
#

hey its got the european seal of approval! must be legit

umbral moss
#

it's 39 18650 cells lmao

deep sapphire
umbral moss
sly elk
#

man i'm trying to find it

#

but one of the reviews had a pic of the battery burst open and flames shooting out

deep sapphire
umbral moss
#

lithium do be like that pogianger

deep sapphire
umbral moss
#

I'd also put a 4090 in a PC if I was building one today

#

but I'm trying to hold out for the 5090

#

maybe they'll finally learn to count to four memory controllers

deep sapphire
#

dont you have a 3090

umbral moss
#

no

deep sapphire
#

oh

umbral moss
#

I have a 10 series titan lmao

deep sapphire
umbral moss
#

for 1200 2023 dollars I get something like 3x the performance of my 1200 2016 dollars

deep sapphire
#

I probably gained about 6x the performance from my 1070

#

im happy

umbral moss
#

yeah, I like the 4090 conceptually but the VHPWR thing is a big thonker

#

hey let's put 450W through 8 tiny pins with 18 AWG crimps

#

at least route the VHPWR connector so the wire harness is supported by something other than prayer wearycarby

#

tots and pears to your GPU, better buy a new one - leather jacketman, 2023

chrome oracle
umbral moss
#

ah, the bad old days when the GTX480 was also notorious for catching fire

chrome oracle
#

ha! i remember those memes!

umbral moss
#

12 years later and they just added an extra 0 pogianger

#

to the price too pogianger

back when evga was a good company and they only made GPUs

cerulean talon

This lacks purple, and is therefore disappointing, but cute.

chrome oracle
#

rip evga gpus

umbral moss
#

rip evga in general

chrome oracle
#

did they go under entirely

umbral moss
#

after they bought abit they just turned into a shit company

chrome oracle
#

oh i see

#

they kinda fell off the map since they cut partnership with nvidia, unaware of what theyre doing now

umbral moss
#

garbo warranty policies, mediocre to poor products

#

yeah

#

what else do they make that's actually good or notable

chrome oracle
#

oof.. i mean yeah, but also oof

umbral moss
#

they're selling like, PSUs and peripherals now, but they don't actually make any of those lmao

im still torn between just overclocking and undervolting the hell out of an i5-13600k or going with a stock (and of course undervolted) 7800X3D. the former is cheaper than the latter but of course would force a full mobo upgrade down the line

cerulean talon
#

Undervolting haha

chrome oracle
#

..but then again honestly feature-wise, id probably upgrade the mobo anyway for a different ryzen generation

deep sapphire
#

yeah but

#

you know with intel

#

you just turn your PC on

#

and it works

chrome oracle
#

with intel, theres a secondary concession

deep sapphire
#

AMD is like Ford, always in the shop

#

needing constant tweaks

#

just not good

#

we're adults we need to VALUE our time here

chrome oracle
#

12th and 13th gen sockets dont spread pressure or have full contact so you would have to buy a 3rd party bracket and mobo backplate

#

people see as much as 5-10C difference

deep sapphire
#

or

#

OR

#

just dont look at your temps

#

its like a frame rate counter

#

instead of enjoying the game

#

you sit there looking at the number

#

and you're like

chrome oracle
#

i run small form factor builds so temp management is something to consider more so than a full build

deep sapphire
#

EUGH THIS IS BULLSHIT I HAVE A 4090 I DESERVE BETTER THAN THIS

#

so you waste your whole afternoon

#

fucking around with settings

#

when you could've just cracked open a cold beer

#

and played some games

#

or a cold dew also a good choice

chrome oracle
#

if you pour the cold beer/dew on the 4090 that will cool it off a bit

#

technically liquid cooled

chrome oracle
#

im just at a crossroad. i play nothing but FF14, WoW, and Minecraft all with friends. Diablo IV later on.

I've settled on a 4070 and I run a 1440p monitor and plan to for the foreseeable future (upgrade path being higher refresh rates and better panel tech).

so both MMOs will be CPU bound. The obvious powerhouse choice is the 7800X3D due to the cache directly affecting performance in populated areas/combat, but the i5-13600K is better all around and I'm not usually sitting in a huge populated area nor do i have any issue already in raids/alliances.

i can see myself upgrading mobo generations anyway regardless of the platform because of feature sets and improvements over time.

deep sapphire
#

well all of those games will run fine on the most toaster of computers

#

so if your current setup isnt that old

#

then just save your money

modest moss
#

What's your current cpu

chrome oracle
#

im running on an m2 mac mini actually

deep sapphire
chrome oracle
#

not a very apple to apple (heh) comparison

deep sapphire
#

Rejemah is a real tech enthusiast

modest moss
#

You sound like a 13600k and 4070 will be great then

deep sapphire
#

cause thats the only people who buy a mac mini

chrome oracle
#

i work in devops so yes 🙂

#

i just use what doesnt piss me off in the moment

deep sapphire
#

I still have my old airport extreme gateway somewhere

chrome oracle
#

oh wow, is it still in use?

deep sapphire
#

apple made great routers for the time

#

nah I have it in storage I think

#

I got it in like 2012 so its well obsolete now haha

chrome oracle
#

right! i know a guy who still uses it for his home wifi and its surprisingly decent

deep sapphire
#

apple was stupid to stop making them

chrome oracle
#

i still tell him to use something modern but its workable lol

#

yeah idk why they do the things they do 😦

deep sapphire
#

I know its ridiculously niche product segment for them but come on

#

they were so good

chrome oracle
#

their ego is usually left unchecked which is offputting

deep sapphire
#

pretty much

#

its almost impressive they even bother with the mac anymore

#

iPhone makes up like 80 percent of their profit lmao

chrome oracle
#

i can say macOS is very jank when you do anything beyond development/design or casual use. it singlehandedly ruins the incredible engineering of their ARM chips for me

deep sapphire
#

yeah I believe it, plus they pretty much force you to use things their way when they change architecture

#

I was there when they switched to intel and when they went 64 bit on iOS

chrome oracle
#

yes the arch changes are.. rough..

deep sapphire
#

like 6 month warning, alright fuck you everyone on 64 bit your legacy apps dont work anymore

chrome oracle
#

Rosetta 2 is incredible but they made it clear that it's temporary. And Bootcamp just doesnt exist anymore

deep sapphire
#

yeah its frustrating, and they still fail to entice 3rd party developers to make native mac apps

#

mac still has killer productivity exclusives sure but thats basically the only reason you'd take one over a PC

#

and while M1 was impressive as fuck when it launched, the PC market caught up pretty quick and now surpass all apple offerings in performance

#

though macs still lead in battery life

chrome oracle
#

SE actually makes me very disappointed with how they handled the FFXIV client for macOS.

It's actually the Windows client inside a WINE wrapper. So when you play, you're working through Rosetta -> WINE -> Game. Two separate translation layers that tank performance.

It's to the point that you have to use a 3rd party launcher (XIV on Mac) that uses a special WINE config that is friendlier to ARM and macOS. FPS doubles using that alone.

deep sapphire
#

but it was so bad they had to pull it from sale and rework it

chrome oracle
#

oh yeah the power efficiency is nutty. my time with mac as a desktop is well over, but ill always have a macbook for that 15+ hour battery life

#

funny to imagine that the client used to be worse

chrome oracle
deep sapphire
#

yeah I saw a video of shadowlands running on an M1

deep sapphire
#

ardenwald was full 60

#

no dips

sly elk
#

the fucking game already costs $13/mo and you pay like $30+add ons for the client

#

they can't be fucked to make a mac version for all that $$ and decide they want more $$

#

greedy bastards

chrome oracle
#

no spend only profit 😄

sly elk
#

like people pay them $150+/year and then cosmetics or whatever and square can't be fucked

deep sapphire
#

I'd love to own a mac book but I just would have no use for it

sly elk
#

and I'm sure just like every other game

#

it's a "microsoft sent free hookers if we used directx instead of opengl" kinda deal

#

(now, I think apple can also get fucked for giving up on opengl and introducing proprietary metal)

deep sapphire
#

go to bed john carmack I know its you /s

deep sapphire
#

is she barking

sly elk
#

booth of them can get fucked

deep sapphire
#

hey at least it isnt as much of a meme as vulkan is

chrome oracle
deep sapphire
#

apple (in particular steve jobs) never gave 2 shits about video games so its not surprising at all

#

hell, john carmack was the sole reason they went with openGL and kept it as long as they did

chrome oracle
#

though im convinced that when Rosetta is dropped, SE would rather just drop macOS support than put any effort into a native version

deep sapphire
#

lol probably

sly elk
#

probably

#

which is unfortunate

#

I'd love to run ffxiv on a nice m2 machine

#

not hear my jet engine pc takeoff

#

with its crappy intel for the wintel cpu

deep sapphire
#

apple needs to do better about getting game developers to care about mac

sly elk
#

lol

deep sapphire
#

the whole benefit of M2 is the GPU

sly elk
#

the problem is they don't make an edgy enough mac

#

they need to make a black mac studio with neon skulls

#

and RGB

deep sapphire
#

lmao the intel nuc

sly elk
#

lol not that any gamer has ever

deep sapphire
#

wow I almost spelled intel with c instead of t

sly elk
#

I've never seen an intel nuc in the wild

#

erm

chrome oracle
#

i used to have one!

sly elk
#

except in business environments

#

but never seen a 'gaming nuc' being used for gaming lol

chrome oracle
#

i had the 8th gen intel nuc that had integrated amd graphics chip

sly elk
#

i've seen plenty of them powering ad signs and like, lab stuff at work.. until they replaced those all with OptiFlex Minis

#

aka Dell OptiFuckYou

deep sapphire
#

remember this?

sly elk
#

Dell aka we hate our employees

deep sapphire
#

the infamous intel skulltrail platform

sly elk
#

you can tell how the CEO feels about their employees when you walk in a business

#

based on what kinda computers they use

#

Dell = we fucking hate you

deep sapphire
#

im surprised tbh, I've always held dell in high regards when it comes to commercial

chrome oracle
#

i was looking at the NUC 13 Extremes and jesus their pricing got out of control. $1300 for an i7-13700K platform with no graphics card, storage, or memory. also the thing is huge.

sly elk
deep sapphire
#

hell who else is gonna come out to your business at 2am to fix your shit

sly elk
#

all of it is also true for dell towers

#

like

#

even the precision towers are made out of the same junk

deep sapphire
#

the poor cooling? haha

sly elk
#

YES

deep sapphire
#

yeah they all have their own custom boards and shit

sly elk
#

especially that >> which is funny

deep sapphire
#

I fixed many of them

sly elk
#

because old precision towers had okay cooling

#

but the newer ones suck

deep sapphire
#

but one nice thing I will give dell

sly elk
#

at some point they decided every tower case would use the same metal cage

deep sapphire
#

is they limit the amount of screws you need to undo to change shit out

#

like those hard drive cages

sly elk
#

true

#

and the fans hahha

deep sapphire
#

it was just those little push tabs

#

yeah

sly elk
#

-recalls steve from gamers nexus ranting about the fan cages-

deep sapphire
#

now HP

sly elk
#

I don't complain about HP because I've rarely used an HP machine but

#

.. but..

#

we did have a few of them at work that belonged to a project

deep sapphire
#

so my first IT job was a PC tech, this was like 2010 or so

#

we got a lot of those shitty HP vista laptops

#

DV6000

sly elk
#

they were okay except for one that had dual GPUs for some odd reason

deep sapphire
#

the most ghetto cobbled together engineering I've ever seen

sly elk
#

rofl the ones with the flowers

deep sapphire
#

wires just running around all over the place

sly elk
#

one of my coworkers had one of those and hackintoshed it

#

and he was still using it last I heard

deep sapphire
#

DC jacks all broke from the weak solder joints

#

ha nice

sly elk
#

he probably replaced the jack

#

now, when it comes to enterprise dell

deep sapphire
#

they werent reinforced at all, it was just 2 solder joints holding them in, some had plastic backings with hot glue

sly elk
#

my experience is it's kinda like GM stuff?

#

like

deep sapphire
#

sometimes its great, sometimes its the most dog shit you've ever seen?

sly elk
#

I've walked past a dell poweredge with a flashing orange LCD thingy

#

and it's been like that for years

deep sapphire
#

Silverado and Cruz

sly elk
#

and the thing's over a decade old and still works

#

but it's been complaining that the redundancy is compromised for at least 8 years

deep sapphire
#

haha yeah sums up those well

sly elk
#

apple can be kinda hit or miss sometimes but most of the macs I've purchased just sat and ran for years without issue

#

but most of my macs are desktops

deep sapphire
#

thats why I kinda cringed at those old louis rossman videos

#

when he did nothing but shit on apple engineering

#

and I'd be like "wtf is he talking about every mac I've ever seen lasts for 10 years basically"

#

but I get it, thats probably what he saw the most

#

if you fix something constantly you become jaded to it

#

aka me and AMD

sly elk
#

i've had 5 mac laptops

#

the powerbook g4 was great.
the white macbook was bad quality but the hardware worked great. I worked that sucker hard.
first macbook air (2011) was great, but I sold it after 2 years
second macbook air (2013) crapped out after uh 5-ish years, I had it plugged in and charging when the power was being flaky in the house and it burned out the charging circuit somehow.
macbook pro (2014) still going strong but one of the fans has been rattling since 1 year old. also the screen is starting to delaminate around the camera and the rubber trim has been flaking off around the edge.

deep sapphire
#

the only infamous ones I can remember were the 8600GT macbook pros (which wasnt even apple's fault that was all on nvidia because the same shit happened to PCs) and the ribbon cable for the display being too short causing it to fatigue and fail prematurely

#

funny story about the 8600GT ordeal, it pissed apple off so much they refused to support nvidia or do business with them ever again after that

sly elk
#

i have a mbp 2018 from work (got it in 2019), the battery swelled up a year or two ago, so we had to get it replaced.. otherwise it's been fine.

#

I'm not looking forward to the day it finally craps out

#

when it does I'll probably be forced back onto a dell

deep sapphire
#

how long does apple plan on supporting intel macs

sly elk
#

hmm

#

officially they drop new feature support after 5 years

#

and then I think you get another year or three of security updates

deep sapphire
#

I figure they kinda got themselves in a pinch because they only switched to their own architecture like 6 months after they launched the mac pro lol

sly elk
#

but generally apple is really good about software updates

#

but not necessarily perfect. They draw the line at the 10 year mark and are sometimes petty about it

#

for example, ventura doesn't work on my 2013 mac pro

deep sapphire
#

I know when they switched to Intel from PPC they only supported it with one more OS version which was 10.6

#

10.7 didn’t work at all on PPC

sly elk
#

that is true

#

and the last PPC macs aged real fast

#

because they didn't support h.264 decoding in hardware

#

even if the hardware technically could support it

#

which sucked if you had a powermac :S

#

"I'll just get a new GPU that supports it" NOPE

deep sapphire
#

and you can’t forget when they used dexcool in the enclosed water cooled heat sinks that leaked which makes me laugh because dexcool was notorious for making seals leak even in GMs

#

Fuckin anti freeze as a coolant

sly elk
#

the early days of Mac OS X were a really hopeful moment in apple's history

#

as a nerd that likes unix machines and gaming

#

you could run anything based on quake 3 or unreal engine on a mac

#

it was awesome

minor hollow
#

Which intel event where they used the external mega cooler again

deep sapphire
#

That was pretty recent I think

chrome oracle
#

9th or 10th gen?

deep sapphire
#

Yeah they leaked it could overclock to like 8 GHz or something stupid and then told everyone after it used a custom cooling solution rofl

deep sapphire
#

Minnesota has a boner for apple computers in schools it’s all I ever used I remember they put OSX on all the G3 macs and eMacs hahaha

#

Just obnoxiously slow

sly elk
#

OSX needed a lot of ram

#

the problem was a lot of machines were coming with 256mb when it really needed at least a gig

deep sapphire
#

ha if even that, 2000-2001 you were lucky to even have 512MB

sly elk
#

indeed

#

powermac g4s could take it though

#

but it was $$$

deep sapphire
sly elk
#

mine could take 1.5gb, came with 256mb and I upgraded it to 768mb at some point and it made a massive difference

#

the other thing that g4 tower had was dual processors

#

which again, made OS X considerably more usable

#

otoh it made OS 9 completely unusable!!

#

rofl it crashed so much when I used os 9 on it

deep sapphire
#

ha I bet

sly elk
#

OS 9 really didn't like dual processor systems

deep sapphire
#

did they ever add the mac boot chime back

sly elk
#

yes

#

as I recall, the macs that came with it disabled started chiming again after a certain OS update

#

because that was just a firmware flag lol

deep sapphire
#

yeah I think I read that

#

pretty stupid they disabled it

#

😩

sly elk
#

lmao

#

we're at the point where a 1tb ssd is cheaper than a 1tb hdd

#

2tb is still cheaper in hdd though

#

$49 for a 2tb hdd, $48 for a 1tb on amazon going by the cheapest new listings

#

now if only i could find a dirt cheap usb enclosure with a power brick

deep sapphire
#

holy shit

#

thats a sweet hotrod

sly elk
#

it's like what a pt cruiser was trying to be lol

#

why does chevy like throwing the word "Custom" around so much

#

i'm pretty sure that's what the C in C/K means

modest moss
sly elk
#

wikipedia says i'm wrong >>

deep sapphire
#

C just means 2WD

#

K is 4WD

deep sapphire
modest moss
#

It's cool af and much cheaper than the truck you wanted

deep sapphire
#

Custom on trucks was just a trim level called Custom Deluxe

#

which they still offer btw

sly elk
#

lol

#

it sounds cooler than HIGH COUNTRY

deep sapphire
#

yeah I agree high country sounds lame af

sly elk
#

which to be fair, sounds better than TRD Pro haha

deep sapphire
#

I looked it up and supposedly its supposed to signify louis chevrolet enjoying his time in the mountains or something? LOL

sly elk
#

anything sounds better than TRD pro

deep sapphire
#

TURD

modest moss
#

A really professional shit

sly elk
#

if I ran a plumbing company

#

i'd make emblems for the vans that say TURD PRO

deep sapphire
sly elk
#

and look just like the toyota TRD Pro emblem

deep sapphire
#

I learned in Mexico they dont even call it the Silverado

#

they call it the Cheyenne

sly elk
#

that font looks just like the 90s DODGE font

deep sapphire
#

and if you are confused, chevy designated their trim levels on names

#

the Silverado itself is actually fairly new, before it was just the top trim level

sly elk
#

the mexico product people are better at naming trucks lol

deep sapphire
sly elk
#

who needs a F150 when you can have a LOBO

#

wolf 150 would sound way the hell cooler than f150

#

then again this is ford we're talking about

#

they used the mustang name on a station wagon

modest moss
#

Ford Escort, driving a car named after a hooker

sly elk
#

i'll forgive that

#

honestly they should've kept that name >>

#

it's funnier if the owner gives their car a womans' name

#

-points at car- "And that's Betsy, my Escort"

#

"I rented her for a week from Enterprise"

#

it came in cargo truck trim lol

#

all those doctors are there observing to find out why anyone would buy a ford escort

#

oooo

deep sapphire
deep sapphire
#

my dad owned like 3 escorts back in the day

sly elk
#

what a playa

#

maybe that's what the E in mustang Mach E means

deep sapphire
#

they were total shitboxes

#

haha

#

he paid like 800 bucks for them

#

once one shit the bed he just go find another one

sly elk
#

man if I took over ford for a day

#

i'd mess them up so good

modest moss
#

Ford Fiesta named after a British nudie magazine too

sly elk
#

oh I just remembered another epic ford name

#

how could we forget

#

Mercury Cougar

deep sapphire
#

I was talking about that car yesterday I think haha

#

with the cool cougar emblem on the hood

sly elk
#

sooo

deep sapphire
sly elk
#

action #5 or whatever: Bring back the Mercury Cougar mostly for laughs as a high end mustang

deep sapphire
#

our escort was completely different until like the early 2000s

sly elk
#

like it would be a lazy rebadge. Not quite as bad as the Cadillac Cimmaron but

#

i'd basically just pick a random V8 trim and sell it with cougar badges

modest moss
#

Did you get the capri

sly elk
#

and say that's the Mercury Cougar

sly elk
#

if you took off the trunk and made it 1 wheel in the front

#

it'd look like a reliant robin

deep sapphire
sly elk
deep sapphire
#

well caprice

sly elk
#

i'm guessing the robin copied it

deep sapphire
#

but whats the difference

sly elk
#

ahh if I ran GM

#

I would 100% bring back the caprice name somehow

deep sapphire
#

you've probably seen these in older movies

sly elk
#

and I'd get myself fired as CEO because of it

deep sapphire
#

they were very popular cop cars of the era

sly elk
#

also the Cadillacs would all get renamed

#

and I'd fire everyone who decided to call them XT3,CT5,etc

modest moss
#

Proper 80s lad car

#

That gif was annoying

deep sapphire
#

hatch backs were cool

sly elk
#

Eldorado, Seville, Brougham, Fleetwood, Sixty Special

deep sapphire
#

1972 monte carlo

sly elk
#

now that's a car design with some chest hair

modest moss
#

That's a unit and a half

deep sapphire
sly elk
#

honestly

for the price it was a damn good car

#

fully loaded could be had under 40,000 dollars, good looking car

#

plenty of power

sly elk
#

I had the opportunity to get one instead of the XTS

#

there were a few reasons I didn't

deep sapphire
#

this is probably my favorite looking classic car though

#

and yes its a mustang

#

but I dont care

#

its fuckin gorgeous

sly elk
#

the first one was that an almost new XTS cost less and had more features and a much nicer interior

#

the second was that the impala interior was kinda sad looking

#

the materials were fine....

chrome oracle
#

i think mustangs look great

sly elk
#

also for whatever reason, GM never put the newer version of the radio in that car

chrome oracle
#

unfortunately a lot of their fans ruined it lol

sly elk
#

they used the old version of GM's software

deep sapphire
#

MyLink? haha

sly elk
#

yea

deep sapphire

its fairly responsive at least

sly elk
#

they were using v2 when cadillac was using v3 or whatever

#

it was silly

#

oh yea and the engine options

deep sapphire
sly elk
#

as I recall

odd sand
#

They were out of rental cars for my trip, so we had to use a fucking Suburban instead.

sly elk
#

most of the impalas on dealer lots had the 2.4L or the 2.5L ecotec

sly elk
#

and if there's one lesson i learned as a kid

#

it's never buy an american car with a 4 banger

odd sand
#

Because when driving 6hrs thru the mountains, you totally want to be flooring it at 14mpg

sly elk
#

oh come now

#

that meme existed long before the meme did

odd sand
#

The instant MPG gauge read 4-5 when climbing the mountain grades...

deep sapphire
#

the cars and coffee meme? I swear that was what made it trend haha

deep sapphire
sly elk
#

wlel more like

#

when I was a kid

odd sand
#

I don't know. Certainly didn't seem all that powerful, so I'm guessing not

sly elk
#

teens were buying and wrecking fox body mustangs

odd sand
#

Also the brakes were mushy garbage.

deep sapphire
#

yeah the 5.3 isnt very powerful, its good enough but not gonna launch you in your seat

deep sapphire
#

but at least its better than the "new generation" era

sly elk
#

eh

deep sapphire
#

ugly

#

no power

sly elk
#

I can't say I've ever really hated a mustang

deep sapphire
#

terrible interior

odd sand
#

I should have gone out biking today but I've just been really tired since like 5pm so I couldn't muster the fucks

sly elk
#

but the interior

#

the dashboard looked like a pushup bra

#

and the center stack looked like a urinal

deep sapphire
#

true story, when that mustang came out the new (at the time obviously) Modular V8 wasnt ready yet, so the year after they launched the GT and guess what

#

it made only 10 more hp than the outgoing windsor 302

#

🤣

#

while chevy gave you an LT1 with 325hp, Ford couldnt even do 230

sly elk
#

like the inside of a push up bra

#

and what the hell was with the headlight switch on those

#

sheesh

#

it's like

#

your'e sitting in the driver's seat

#

and you see

#

speed, tach, fuel gauge, temperature gauge, HEADLIGHT SWITCH

#

and it was the cranky old person switch that you have to pull out

odd sand
#

Also the wireless charging pad on the Suburban basically didn't work. You had to place it perfectly and it would constantly cut in and out

sly elk
#

then you have to rip it out and get the upgraded charging mat that costs like $50

deep sapphire
#

The Windsor and Romeo have subtle differences. Valve cover bolt patterns are one. Romeo has fewer bolts than the Windsor. Another difference is the front cover bolts. The Windsor uses 8 mm and the Romeo uses 10 mm bolts. The Romeo uses jack screws on the main caps and the Windsor uses dowels. The new engine produced 215 hp (160 kW; 218 PS) at 4,400 rpm and 285 lb⋅ft (386 N⋅m) of torque at 3,500 rpm, matching the output of its predecessor. For 1998, the 4.6 L V8 received a small increase in output, resulting in 225 hp (168 kW; 228 PS) at 4,750 rpm and 290 lb⋅ft (393 N⋅m) of torque at 3,500 rpm. This was achieved through PCM calibration and a modified fuel system. Though capable of matching or exceeding the older 302 V8's output, the 4.6 L V8 was criticized for delivering inadequate performance, particularly against the larger displacement of the OHV V8 used in the Mustang's chief rival, the Chevrolet Camaro.

#

225 HP

#

I dunno how any of these sold

#

they looked horrible, made no power

odd sand
#

Doesn't the Civic Si make close to that with a 4cyl?

deep sapphire
#

even honda is guilty of the same thing they havent increased base power by any meaningful amount in close to a decade now

odd sand
#

Sure, but at a certain point how much more can you push it while meeting EPA MPG guidelines etc>

deep sapphire
#

the new type R only makes like 3-5 more hp than the outgoing model

#

but I guess 310 hp is good enough for FWD

odd sand
#

310 is still really impressive for a factory-tuned 4cyl

sly elk
#

also it gets ridiculous gas mileage in the accord lol

#

like 40mpg

deep sapphire
#

in the hybrid yeah

#

I wouldn’t mind an accord

#

Nothing special about it but that’s what they do best

#

Affordable, good gas, reliable

chrome oracle

sly elk
#

blaaaa

#

I don't wanna change jobs but I would love to try a company that went completely non-MS

#

apple laptops, google cloud services

#

that would certainly be interesting

void dove
#

yeah, fair, never really had any that did that

sly elk
#

yea it's always dells and microsoft up the ass

void dove
#

always been primarily microsoft

#

though, did have a client where a huge chunk of their workstations were Macs

#

so mac management platforms were interesting

#

but i didn't touch it much, wasnt a client assigned to me

sly elk
#

I would argue that Windows was built from the ground up to be managed

void dove
#

yep exactly

sly elk
#

like since Windows NT first became a thing

#

it was made by the brains at IBM and redmond to be the ultimate employee oppression experience

void dove
#

macs, are doable, but require more work to get it setup imo

#

lol

sly elk
#

and if you understand that, then it makes total sense when people complain about the user experience and threaten to go buy a mac or whatevert

#

especially retail customers

void dove
#

nowadays if your enterprise environment is painful for employees to use

sly elk
#

macs were made to be used by users

void dove
#

your environment is setup badly

sly elk
#

windows was not

void dove
#

Windows can be Very user friendly, but most engineers, dont know how to do it properly

sly elk
#

yea but even when it sings of azure cloud AD perfection

#

but I will concede, you are correct that a bad management and inexperienced IT/security will utterly destroy the experience

void dove
#

you can seriously build an entirely self-service driven, cloud based, windows enterprise.

sly elk
#

but even then, there are just use patterns and idk, things, that make using windows or any other MS product feel kinda comically uncomfortable sometimes

void dove
#

but companies are stupid

sly elk
#

but windows is so ubiquitous that people experience this and think that's just how computers are

#

haha coming from the linux dev world

void dove
#

Microsoft lives off backwards compatibility and being Extremely extensible

sly elk
#

(yep! I write software for linux machines! Odd, I know)

void dove
#

so yea, gets to be all over the place

sly elk
#

windows is just 1 OS

void dove
#

you can unify the experience and streamline it, BUT requires work

sly elk
#

and compared to everything else I've used lol

#

(bsdi, freebsd, various linuxes, mac os x, classic mac os... I never got to experience next or beos or amigaos first hand.. ehh) ... windows is weird. xD

#

I think the fact that it's so easy and detailed to manage is also what makes it so vulnerable (at times) lol

void dove
#

talk to most internal IT engineers and managers at enterprises, they have no fucking idea about modern ways to use/configue windows, and AzureAD, etc, to make everything user friendly for the modern world

#

most are dinosaurs

sly elk
#

it's like taking a house

#

and putting locks on the doors that are unlockable from outside without a key

#

but not inside

#

all that said

#

fapolicyd exists if you want to make a linux users' life miserable lol

void dove
# sly elk I think the fact that it's so easy and detailed to manage is also what makes it ...

yes, and no.
a lot of attack vectors are because of legacy components, or systems which microsoft has since improved, but companies are just not properly upgrading.
you can read through many of the more serious CVEs in recent years for Windows.
and find that most, mitigations are just to, use the newer implementation of said system, or just not turn on some stupid setting, that reduces security.

#

case in point, Print Nightmare....

sly elk
#

yup

void dove
#

printer vendors using older print driver formats, means, that the print services couldn't be secured better than they used to be.
print Nightmare found, which could be mitigated if all print drivers were v3? (i cant remember the specifics but whatever)

#

and NOT turning off a security setting

sly elk
#

but the fact the OS was designed to lock a user out of things in the first place

#

makes it kinda easy for a malicious 'admin' to lock said user out of said things too hahaha

void dove
#

thats, security though?

#

how is that any different to linux and root vs non root users?

#

you dont want people being able to change everything in their OS

#

unless im misunderstanding your point

sly elk
#

well sometimes it's little dumb shit like locking a browser down to a compromised search engine via 'group policy' lol

void dove
#

thats admins thou

sly elk
#

to be fair

#

you do this for a living, I don't

void dove
#

windows provides the tools

sly elk
#

EXACTLY

#

my point is that the tools exist

#

an amount of tools that I think is kinda excessive at times

#

I understand why it exists though

void dove
#

i dont get why thats bad

#

dont blame the tools, blame the engineer

#

tools are as good or as bad as the person using them

#

if a company decides to lock the search engine down to one specific one

sly elk
#

idk, imagine that level of control being exerted in any other aspect of a workplace

void dove
#

thats nothing that Windows did wrong, blame the company

sly elk
#

like

#

you go to your desk one day

#

and let's say you're a bit of a pen person, so you have like a fancy fountain pen

#

you go to your desk and it's gone. in fact all your pens are gone. even the bicss

#

they've been replaced by one (1) red pen with the company logo on it

#

you go to your boss and complain and they tell you "company policy, you must only use that red company pen"

void dove
#

that is a horrible analogy, and not even in the same ballpark, im sorry i dont agree

sly elk
#

things I've seen people locked out of on windows

#

lockscreen, wallpaper, browser home page, the gain level on their fucking mic

#

i'm surprised they don't group policy the brightness on laptop screens lol

void dove
#

anyone can do the same thing on linux, and macs

#

this isn't new

sly elk
#

i could kinda sorta see the mic setting thing being annoying when people somehow screw that up

if someone was attacked on their home PC, and a virus changed those things, they can change them back, they have an admin account

livid dune
#

this is the 3rd time i get this onion mf

void dove
#

same can happen on linux, mac, etc, etc

#

this isn't special to Windows

#

just because group policy is a thing, doesn't make it good or bad,
like any system you have admin access to, IF you download a virus or get compromised, then anything can be changed, to try and lock you out of anything

#

the built in systems, dont matter, anyone could make linux or mac do those things

sly elk
#

I agree, but they don't lay out the red carpet with a laundry list of all those things available to do at the OS level?

void dove
#

so they shouldn't do these things because they "may" be used against users?

#

if linux was the dominant platform, but had none of those tools, all virus makers would do, is make their virus do it directly, instead of use policies

#

that would change nothing

sly elk
#

obviously they should because your job wouldn't exist and well, lots of companies love that detailed level of control

#

it exists for a reason lol

#

even if I think it gets ridiculous and nonsensical

#

ultimately i despise windows and use it only on my toy computer 😄

#

and even then I wouldn't use it if microsoft hadn't had some kinda coke party for EA or whoever in the 90s to make everyone use directx 😄

#

-hides-

#

Idk I'll find out when I start poking at the options

#

This kind sucks because I recently put a new Asus it's board in my personal rig

#

And it's been having issues too

#

So like it really means it's a widespread issue

it's a fun time to be sitting here pondering what cpu to go with hahaha

what hank says about the intel stuff being reliable is true (for this generation anyway)

#

for last gen it was bull shit >>

I just put a Asus board I had in it

sly elk

the crappy DDR5 controller :S

potent arrow

My old one died.

sly elk
#

just generally DDR5 still kinda seems to suck :S

potent arrow

:S

#

I have a 7950x reserved for my new build

sly elk
#

like, the idea I can't just pop 4x16gb sticks in my computer and have a reliable ddr6000 setup

#

because the memory controllers just can't handle it

#

on a $500+ CPU and a $300+ motherboard

#

COME ON!

#

HEDT my ass

potent arrow
#

LOL

sly elk
#

I hate that they're charging HEDT prices for low end hardware :S

#

like why is the CPU $500 if it only has like 24 pcie lanes 😦

#

back in my day you could get an x99 setup with 40 pcie lanes and have all the SSDs and RAM you wanted

#

Shut up gramps

sly elk
#

also there's something that pisses me off about buying a motherboard with 4 ram slots and only being able to use 2 of them

Gigabyte has the worst RMA process in the business and has for the last 20 years

#

infact I dont even think they make anything good period, I remember they always had really jank bios issues all the time

modest moss

Never had an issue with a Gigabyte mobo though

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZ-QVOKGVyM does all jay do is just watch gamers nexus and make videos about it lol

The last several years have proven that ASUS is anti-consumer and lack serious quality control. Enough so, that we can no longer support the brand or allow them to be one of our trusted sponsors.

I ran my 3770K 3.8 @ 4.2 all-core but that wasn't very extreme. And the only thing I did for my 9900K was run the ram at 3600 instead of 3200

I think GN also ended up on Asus' naughty list so they didn't review an ROG Ally because of that

sly elk
#

Does GN even do launch day reviews?

odd sand
#

Given Steve's choice of words, I wouldn't be surprised if they stopped getting review hardware entirely

torpid kayak

hm is a 300W-consuming GPU a lot? Or just your average? I can't really tell considering I jump from a GTX 960 that hits 120W at best, but my electricity bill spikes like 30% this month, though it can be argued that I used A/C a lot more frequently because it is 35-40 degree Celious

sly elk
#

i kinda figured GN was going down the path of buying their own hardware to review anyway

sly elk
#

but the argument i saw come up time and again is

#

-> Asus is a scumbag company

Yea but the other motherboard brands are shitty, too!

#

I'd say that's a fantastic opportunity for some american brand to come along and grab some good programmers on sale from google/meta/microsoft/whatever and make a nice board with really really good firmware/software

#

-chuckle- imagine if dell sold ATX motherboards under the alienware brand for DIYers

#

or maybe its own brand altogether

#

their AW offerings have never been that great though in terms of motherboards. Even when they used standard ATX boards they usually had half the ram slots the chipset would support

#

like 4 slots on the HEDT boards and 2 slots on the normal ones

sly elk
#

if i want a really overpriced intel motherboard

#

evga feels like a lie too

deep sapphire
#

EVGA seems fine, for its features its priced comparable to the competition

the CEO is from Taiwan and AFAIK they contracted virtually all of their engineering in Taiwan

the only thing american about evga is the mailing address

again at the end of the day they are all foxconn trash lmao

it's only the tiniest bit more american than asus or gigabyte
