sly elk
#

every other OS uses ctrl+shift+c and ctrl+shift+v

#

except windows

austere socket
#

ctrl+c and ctrl+v are copy paste now YaeAcid_axi

sly elk
#

windows does some strange fucked up shit

#

for copy/paste in a terminal

#

shift+ins? right clicking selected text?!

austere socket
#

it's very weird and bad

sly elk
#

like

#

these things were established conventions idk how long ago

#

then ms came along and did stupid things

austere socket
#

well, microsoft has a habit of never rolling back any of their dumb decisions

sly elk
#

now, time for my rant about keyboard layouts

austere socket
#

for the glorious cause of backward compatibility clueless

golden stream
sly elk
#

admittedly, this layout is obnoxious for putting fn where insert should be.. but whatever

#

but note the 3 modifiers on each side

#

and it's all nice and the right edge of the left cmd key lines up with the right edge of the x key

#

very convenient for your thumb to use cmd for hotkeys

austere socket
#

I mean, I see myself putting my middle finger on cmd haha

sly elk
#

now we look at any other ms keyboard

#

they

#

dedicated a whole fucking key to the right click button

austere socket
#

OKAY YEAH, WHY DOES THAT EXIST

sly elk
#

and put it by the space bar of all places

#

so they made every keyboard asymmetrical

#

for the stupidest damn key ever lmao

austere socket
#

maybe it's nice for accessibility purposes but like

#

why put that on every keyboard

#

I've probably pressed it twice ever

sly elk
#

all this said, i'm using my windows machine right now because its' night and idk i just use this pc for fun times lol

austere socket
#

sometimes I wonder what I'd lose by switching OS

sly elk
#

it's ok to experiment

austere socket
#

games are an obvious one, but every other app I use is cross-platform

sly elk
#

i use different things for fun :3

#

and I like using them allll

#

i think what happens if you spend 99% of your time in one os and then you go use another it's like

#

ok great now what lol

#

i like mac laptops because they get great battery life and when I stick them in my bag i know they won't wake up and try to catch on fire

#

but with a desktop, diy matters a lot more to me because i enjoy building computers and upgrading mine

#

in the 4.5 years i've had my desktop i've had 4 different GPUs. I have 3 (pcie) SSDs in there. I've done other things for fun lol

austere socket
#

well for me I'm constantly dipping in and out of hobby programming, so linux is obviously attractive on that side

#

being forced to learn bash would make me dislike it a lot less haha

golden stream
#

I have a windows machine for funsi and most of my works are on linux haha

#

Less bloat more efficient no distraction

sly elk
#

the truly lovely thing about linux is most linuxes will leave you alone in bliss if you don't wanna update

#

5 years ago or whatever, install unbuntu 14.04 or whatever and just... keep using it lol

#

the hard part is when you decide to upgrade

#

and so you do the apt ugprade or whatever and it mostly works great and you're like! I didn't even reboot! this is brilliant!

#

then the next day you go to turn on your computer and it's fuckt

potent arrow
#

I have a arch laptop I use for school

#

I do not want to know how or when I will have to migrate to a new version

#

And I do not want to know how many packages I have installed

sly elk
#

that's weird

#

ford isn't doing AM radio anymore

odd sand
#

I understand, but at the same time it still seems wild to me given how ubiquitous it's been for ... 100 years now?

#

What are cheapos who want to listen to sports supposed to do now?? /s

sly elk
#

i find it really weird

odd sand
#

Since in my area I think the only FM sports are the local NFL team

#

If you want baseball, soccer or nascar etc. you need AM

#

And everything online they want to charge you for instead of just airing the same commercials

sly elk
#

#

Doesn’t AMD still have poor idle power consumption

Unless you’re always gaming I don’t think that’s a fair benchmark when Intel can use as low as 15w at idle compared to 40w of AMD

deep sapphire

wraith agate
#

yeah tbh if I upgrade my cards I will aim for 12gb

#

for multiple reasons

#

not just gaming

deep sapphire
#

Does AMD have GDDR6X or just GDDR6

#

Nvidia cards have lower vram because it uses the faster memory but it’s debatable how much that helps if people are getting capped hard

umbral moss
deep sapphire
umbral moss
#

384/128 = 3

deep sapphire
#

Right

umbral moss
#

conveniently, every single GPU uses a multiple of 3

deep sapphire
#

256 is an even integer

umbral moss
#

12GB is because they use 3x4GB configuration

deep sapphire
#

We don’t know how much more GDDR6X is compared to regular GDDR6 in terms of cost (it’s probably online somewhere im just lazy) but it seems nvidia helped micron develop it

umbral moss
#

my suspicion is that they can't solve the complexity increase of adding another channel to the board

#

since the traces have to be so precisely tuned to avoid crosstalk and capacitance

#

I vaguely remember hearing something from nvidia about that when people were asking about the 12GB capacity

deep sapphire
#

Probably

#

Nvidia took the wrong gamble at the end of the day it seems

#

Like when pentium 4 launched with rambus only lmao

umbral moss
#

I mean, to be fair, RIMM was like 50% faster than DIMM

#

but it was also 250% more expensive so

deep sapphire
#

Yeah but it had horrible latency and also that

#

Nintendo had the same fate

#

Because they also used rambus in the N64

umbral moss
#

I mean, "horrible" is relative, if you have high enough bandwidth the latency is irrelevant

deep sapphire
#

Sure on paper it sounds amazing but when it takes forever to fetch anything out of it, doesn’t particularly help

umbral moss
#

if you looked at DDR5 latency compared to DDR1, it's definitely much slower as far as latency

#

but I doubt you'd want to use DDR1 over DDR5 for anything today

deep sapphire
#

Well yeah lmao

#

But that doesn’t negate my argument, you can clearly google it and see articles about its issues in the day

#

Latency isn’t nearly as big of an issue now days but back then it sure was

#

FSB vs multi channel memory buses

umbral moss
#

I'm saying that RIMM died mainly because rambus was a shitbird patent troll company at the end of the day

#

not because it had worse latency than DDR1

I think that's why we're at the problems we have with modern games. They want MAXQUALITY but don't want to spend time actually optimizing

#

There's apparently some hypermax RTX settings for Cyberpunk now that run at 16fps on a 4090 lol

Me and my puny 10gb vram on my 3080 gonna have to stick to 1080p huh

#

odd sand
#

Or maaaaaybe... game developers can stop being lazy and actually optimize their games for the GPUs that exist on the market

#

Just like the last 3 decades of GPUs

#

There will always be limits based on current tech and i'd say they're already pushed to the limits when the highend cards are 600W 4U 330mm monstrosities

inland mauve
#

but I don't notice a lot of difference between psycho RTX and a lower RTX setting

#

having RTX at all definitely makes a difference for the way characters are lit by their environments, however

#

those talking scenes with other characters feel made for RTX

#

on the other hand you barely notice the RTX in Elden Ring because that game already is so atmospheric

#

the main difference there is how well it renders the shadows of trees

#

that's pretty much it

#

everything else was already really well done

inland mauve
#

dunno if I'd call it photorealistic

wait they're going to crank it up even more?

using 'monitor' speakers is really popular these days, but packaging-wise and sound-quality-wise this may or may not be your preference. It isn't usually mine 😄

#

like audioengine a2+, a lot of edifier speakers (though I can't think of a particular model number), yamaha hs stuff, etcetc

#

for a non-monitor-speaker option, walmart/sams used to regularly have the klipsch 2.1 thx for under $100, it's hard to recommend them for >$100 though

#

(the bluetooth ones are not good because anyone can connect to them and there's no way to turn bluetooth off)

lime wasp
#

So what you're saying is I probably stop sitting around and get to carrying this box up to the UPS store for the return, huh?

that said i would love some ns-10

#

I just go for headphones

#

A good speaker system is great and all

#

But the close sound of headphones is peak

sly elk
#

while people gush over the expensive stuff, there's a lot of $50-200 stuff that sounds fine and even great sometimes

#

edifier is usually really good at cheap-but-good stuff, if you watch slickdeals or /r/buildapcsales sometimes they have good things <$100

Am I missing something?

no CPU power installed

#

oh wait nvm

#

I see it

river jasper
deep sapphire

sorry im blind

river jasper
deep sapphire
#

your ram might be installed in the wrong slots

#

usually they go in 1 - 3

#

some mobos swap it

#

yeah

river jasper
deep sapphire
#

you need to move your ram to slots 1 and 3

#

gdi I need to install shareX hold on

river jasper
#

Want me to check with the Mobo manual? @deep sapphire

deep sapphire
#

nah I can see it

#

trying to show you but dont have shareX installed on my new rig

#

you have it right just swap the slots

#

1 and 3

river jasper
#

Awesome

#

What am I missing

#

Anything not plugged in,

deep sapphire
#

dod you plug in your front panel I/O

#

did**

river jasper
#

You mean this stuff?

deep sapphire
#

yeah

#

still no power?

river jasper
#

Yeah that’s done

river jasper
#

Beyond power

deep sapphire
#

OH

#

gotcha

river jasper
#

I didn’t power anything on yet

deep sapphire
#

well aside from lacking a graphics card yeah seems fine

river jasper
#

Awesome

deep sapphire
river jasper
#

How do I install that

deep sapphire
#

I would address this while you are in there

#

4 pin goes under the 20 pin

#

they should be flush

river jasper
#

Oh

#

So switch them?

deep sapphire
#

nah just remove both and install the 4 pin first

#

then the 20 over it

#

that little tab on the bottom left

#

thats suppose to mesh with the 20 pin connector

#

and make it flush

#

installing a graphics card is pretty simple, make sure you have the PCI-E tabs on the back of the case removed (usually just the first 2 but if you have a big card then may need 3

#

and then slide the graphics card into the slot

#

just like a game cartridge

#

once you see that tab snap back in (you'll hear a click) then its secure

#

you'll then screw the metal tab on the top left of the card into the case

#

so its secure

river jasper
#

Like this?

deep sapphire
#

yep, perfect!

river jasper
deep sapphire
#

you dont remove it, its just like a cartridge slot

#

you just slide the bottom of the graphics card into it

#

just make sure that black tab on the back there is pushed down

#

its a locking mechanism to hold the card into the slot

#

these metal tabs need to be removed first

#

the upper 2

if not you just have to break them out from the inside of the case

river jasper
deep sapphire
#

thats usually only on really shitty cases lol

river jasper

Sooooo

#

I just snap them off?

deep sapphire
latent grotto
#

yea

deep sapphire
#

yeah

#

that cross in there

#

take a phillips screwdriver

#

stick it in the cross

#

and push it out

latent grotto

only break the ones you need to

#

cuz you remove them you can't put them back

deep sapphire

tac weld them back in

latent grotto
deep sapphire

wow levant doesnt know how to mig weld?

latent grotto

this implies they have a welding gun

Sooooo @deep sapphire

latent grotto
#

probably costs more than their pc

river jasper
#

I snap 2 off?

latent grotto
deep sapphire
#

yeah

#

unless you have a beefy ass graphics card like a 4090

latent grotto
#

god

river jasper
#

Ooooof

deep sapphire

mine is in bad shape

#

river jasper
latent grotto

it just barely fit in my first case

deep sapphire
latent grotto
#

the top of the cooler was basically flush with the side panel

deep sapphire
#

you see those gold things on the very top

river jasper
deep sapphire
#

those fit into the slot

#

yeah

#

make sure that black tab I talked about is pushed down first

#

or you wont get it in and you'll end up breaking it

latent grotto
#

i bet hank would want it to break anyway

#

cuz its amd

deep sapphire
river jasper
#

Yeah so this orientation?

deep sapphire
#

no I wouldnt

#

yep

#

just like that

latent grotto
#

wait

deep sapphire
#

push down until you hear/feel it latch

latent grotto
#

how many tabs did you remove?

deep sapphire
#

ah who cares its not that big of a deal

#

levant over here

#

giving moody anxiety

latent grotto
#

well you see

deep sapphire
latent grotto
#

its always anxiety

river jasper
#

@deep sapphire It’s not going in all the way

#

Am I supposed to push it in hard?

latent grotto
#

check to make sure you have it lined up correctly

deep sapphire
#

that needs to be pushed down

latent grotto
#

i'll push you down

deep sapphire
#

it shouldnt require that much force to install

#

push me down what

#

HUH PUNK

latent grotto
#

and yea if you feel like you're about to break something you should probably back off

river jasper
deep sapphire
#

does it feel like putting pressure is gradually making it go down?

latent grotto
#

😳

deep sapphire
#

make sure everything lines up correctly

deep sapphire
river jasper
latent grotto
#

sandpaper

deep sapphire
#

hmmmm

#

are you installing everything with the case on its side

#

if so, look at it from the top when installing it

#

so you can see if its actually going in

river jasper
#

GOT IT

deep sapphire
#

nice

#

now

latent grotto
river jasper
deep sapphire
#

you remember those power connectors you just fucked with

#

you need to find one that is a 6 pin

river jasper
#

Yeah

deep sapphire
#

usually they say PCI-E on the connector

latent grotto
#

its usually a 6+2

deep sapphire
#

yeah

#

it'll have a 2 pin dangling loose off the side

river jasper
#

The cord labelled PCIE?

deep sapphire
#

yep

latent grotto
#

yea

deep sapphire
#

once thats in, you should be good to go for testing it out

#

make sure when you plug in your monitor/TV whatever, the cable is inserted into the graphics card

#

not your motherboard

river jasper
#

Which one they’re on the same cord lol

deep sapphire
#

either is fine

#

you only need 1

#

higher end graphics cards use 2 or 3 of those

#

but yours only requires 1

river jasper
#

So just the 6 pin part?

latent grotto
#

yes

#

the 2 pin will just be hanging

#

the psu side will have the full 8 pins plugged in though

deep sapphire
#

if its modular

#

if its not then you dont need to worry about it

latent grotto
#

oh yea i think its non modular from their prior pic

deep sapphire
#

yeah Levant

nope, turn er on and send it

river jasper
deep sapphire

you can tidy everything up once you can confirm it turns on

#

from my years of being a mechanic there is nothing worse than putting everything back together just to find out it doesnt even work

#

it'll make you throw every tool you have across the room

latent grotto
#

yea don't bother putting any panels on until you confirm it boots

#

and yea looks like all the cords are there

#

feels weird seeing just one case fan

deep sapphire
#

nope I

#

I is on

#

O is off

latent grotto
#

yea O is open

river jasper
#

LOOK AT THAT BBS

deep sapphire
#

ahhh yeahhh

river jasper
#

So I just hard shut off now?

latent grotto
#

but do we have a picture

#

on the monitor

river jasper
#

It just turns out

deep sapphire
#

I have your picture on my monitor

latent grotto
deep sapphire
#

yeah plug in your monitor

latent grotto
#

this confirms nothing then

deep sapphire
#

hey it turns on

#

let them have the moment

#

🔫

#

when I built my 4090 rig my dumbass forgot to plug the 24 ATX pin into the PSU rofl

latent grotto
#

i don't want to give false hope

deep sapphire
#

the relay in the PSU was clicking and I heard the fan going

#

but nothing else

#

I was like wtf

deep sapphire
#

🤣

#

WELP JUST SPENT 3200 BUCKS AND IT DOESNT WORK

latent grotto
river jasper
#

@deep sapphire nothing

#

No picture

deep sapphire
river jasper
#

Motherboard

deep sapphire
#

thats why

river jasper
#

Do I plug it into GPU?

deep sapphire
#

plug it into the graphics card

#

yeah

latent grotto
#

yea gpu

deep sapphire
#

the integrated GPU wont work if a dedicated graphics card is installed

latent grotto
#

i thought it did

deep sapphire
#

I mean, it'll "work" but if you plug into it, it wont give output at all

#

hell it usually wont even post

#

the CPU will always have access to the GPU die inside the chip but its debatable how much that really matters

latent grotto
#

so you'd have to unplug the graphics card before seeing if you can get a display out through the mobo?

deep sapphire
#

correct

#

frankly I think thats stupid but I didnt design it

#

I guess they figured people would install it into the mobo and find out they have shitty graphics performance and not realize the mistake

#

most OEMs put a plastic cap or sticker over the mobo ports

latent grotto
#

SIs are doing it too

latent grotto
#

are the fans on the gpu spinning

deep sapphire
river jasper
#

For reference

deep sapphire
#

oh we missed something

river jasper
#

What we miss

deep sapphire
#

you need to screw in the metal tabs on the graphics card to the case

#

so it doesnt sag

#

not relevant to no video signal

latent grotto
#

sagging just like DEE-

#

i mean what

deep sapphire
#

#

! mute @deep sapphire 1yr

river jasper
#

My mind is internally screaming

#

Idk what I did wrong

deep sapphire
#

Sorry you gotta spend 500 dollars for that

#

Probably nothing

latent grotto
#

it's going to be either

#

somethings loose

#

or

deep sapphire
#

Let’s calm down and take a step back here

latent grotto
#

you just need to shut it down and turn it back on

deep sapphire
#

Cause it’s always something stupid

#

Are the fans at full blast when you turn it on

latent grotto
#

or the monitor isn't getting power

river jasper
#

LOL

deep sapphire
#

Yeah that too

river jasper
#

@latent grotto FUCKING GENIUS

latent grotto
deep sapphire
#

Smh I asked if you had an orange light

river jasper
deep sapphire
#

SUCCESS

latent grotto
#

oh we're fine then

deep sapphire
#

okay add that screw to the card

#

So it doesn’t sag

river jasper
deep sapphire
#

I’d clean the wires up a bit

river jasper
#

And then I install Windows?

#

Once I finish with cable management,

deep sapphire
#

And then put the panels on and yeah install windows

latent grotto
#

and move this wire away from the fan so it doesn't hit it

deep sapphire
#

Reuse the zip ties for those

#

You know I always wondered if zip ties was a brand lol

#

Like Velcro

#

Generic trademark

river jasper
#

Or a Case screw mb
