#

Hooray for DDs.

golden stream
#

Now, sit back and waot for download

glossy ravine
#

I uh. Thank you guys for helping with this.

#

The past almost 2 months have been. A lot.

golden stream
#

At the mean time, I'll recommend to google on "how to liveUSB in chromebook"

#

Also, have a look at the commands of Mint

#

ngl I kinda forget which command Mint uses lol

glossy ravine
#

1.1/2.5 GB

golden stream
#

Lol that's fast

glossy ravine
#

Have cracked/really fast internet here.

golden stream
#

At the meanwhile, heed my instruction

After you created the LiveUSB successfully, plug it onto the desktop (turned off)
Then you turn on the PC
Do NOT wait it to fully boot, smash the hecc outta DEL button
This should boot you to BIOS.
Navigate to the BOOT section, and override the priority (usually 0) to the USB
Save change, restart, it should boot you to the Mint of the Live USB

From that you may have some peek into the disks, and things in general, even being locked, like how many disks and how much it filled with data

glossy ravine
#

Any way to undo those locks?

golden stream
#

Yeah ofc
At least having the LiveUSB allows you get used to Mint environment a bit

glossy ravine
#

Ironically, this Chromebook is probably the slowest PC I've ever used.

golden stream
#

This should work

#

The liveUSB is also a requirement anyway

#

To see if the disks are encrypted or not

#

If not encrypted, it's easier to work around with that web's instruction

#

ngl I hope that not encrypted

glossy ravine
#

Here's hoping.

#

Chromebook is having a fit about where to place this boot stuff...

golden stream
#

Imma sleep, if you have issue that google can't give you a precise answer, just ask here and peep will reply

glossy ravine
#

Thank you Viy.

golden stream
#

Well, chromebook is linux but heavily restricted, so not surprise ngl

#

I wish the disks are not encrypted, as I know you can do it 👍
It'll look scary, just stay calm, deep breath, and follow the steps slowly

glossy ravine
#

Question. When I put Linux on this USB, will it wipe everything else on it?

sly elk
#

yes, so make sure to not use a usb with important stuff on it

glossy ravine
#

Oh fucking hell I almost used one of Yukari's usbs.

you might be able to ditch the NH-D15 and get away with a better performing liquid cooler at around the same price point

hai imp Wave question, but whats the difference between a 3060 and a 3060ti

cerulean talon
#

TI's faster and has more power under the hood.

gritty belfry
#

are laptop 3060s just as strong as those

cerulean talon
#

No.

gritty belfry
#

fak

cerulean talon
#

Mobile chipsets are limited by power usually

gritty belfry
#

Hmm so like

modest moss

gritty belfry
#

can i like

#

#

cerulean talon
#

No. :P

#

The mobo does all the power regulation, so you can't bypass it.

modest moss
#

almost certainly a terrible idea

gritty belfry
#

whats a mobo

#

motherboard?

modest moss
#

yes

gritty belfry
cerulean talon
#

Nominally, for a 3060ti, if you were using a desktop-style card, max retail TDP is ~200w, 120w for the processor, so you need at least 350w.

#

If you could even get it in a latop.

#

*laptop.

#

I think the biggest laptops atm are still only 250-285-ish.

gritty belfry
#

uh

#

i have a raider ge76

cerulean talon
#

This is why laptop cards are comically underclocked.

modest moss
#

in general if you have a laptop you just use it until it dies

gritty belfry
modest moss
#

just play games, it's decent enough

cerulean talon
#

Wall adapter on that is 240

#

You're losing 20w to the screen, 100-ish to the CPU, so you're getting maybe 100-150 to the GPU tops.

#

So at best you're gonna see 2/3rds the performance of a desktop rig, until it overheats and clocks down further because lollaptops.

gritty belfry
modest moss
#

yeah just don't even compare it to a desktop

gritty belfry
#

one day

#

I'll move north and put my laptop on the windowsill while its snowing

cerulean talon
#

slates a spare machine for shipping to Aeris.

#

I wish it was that easy to cool any of my machines.

gritty belfry
#

hm

cerulean talon
#

If I go far enough north I'm seriously considering hard-plumbing a 1-2" water-duct /just/ for watercooling.

gritty belfry
#

is it not

cerulean talon
#

Nah, the house's AC unit is slightly undersized.

#

And when it's 110 outside, we can't dump heat out there.

#

To properly redo the A/C system for this house is gonna be ~20k or so, which won't be affordable for awhile.

#

Technically, for the house (2ksqft), the 4 ton unit we've got is enough cooling, but it's not really enough as soon as you remember it's vegas. :D

gritty belfry
#

hmm

#

im not a HVAC specialist

#

but

#

that seems like a lot of space

#

would it be expensive since youre in vegas

cerulean talon
#

~20k or so for us to upgrade to a 5 ton unit.

gritty belfry
#

any chance you can find a pre-used one

cerulean talon
#

Nah, you wouldn't want one.

gritty belfry
#

whys that

cerulean talon
#

The compressors tend to burn out in 10-15 years.

#

The secret for working out cooling loads (In the US), is every 500sqft is 1 ton of A/C.

#

So our 4 ton is "enough" but it's not nearly enough to keep it comfortable.

gritty belfry
#

hm

#

hopefully it doesnt bring your energy bill up too much neko_nod

cerulean talon
#

It'll auctually drop my cooling bill, hilariously enough.

gritty belfry
#

witchcraft

cerulean talon
#

The current system is a 4 ton, 14 seer unit, where seer is a measure of energy efficency.

#

Per US building code, I'm required, and the home builder was required to put in a 14 seer minimum unit, and they did just that.

#

A sensible upgrade to an 18 seer unit will drop the power usage by 5-10%

#

I considered a 20 seer, but that was an unreasonably large sum of money.

gritty belfry
#

how much is that one

cerulean talon
#

Something like 35k.

cerulean talon
#

Yes, yes it is.

#

It can also be described as 3 replacement engines for my current car.

#

Which is equally depressing, but at least they'd make me happier. :D

gritty belfry

cerulean talon

#

The worst part of being as tall as I am is I'm too tall for pretty much every drift car ;.;

cerulean talon

Also cheaper for me to register it there than here in NV due to the way we pay our taxes.

#

Well, registrations.

#

Google, it's got all the info.

gritty belfry
#

do you ignore the IRS

cerulean talon
#

No, NV doesn't have any state taxes, and the company doesn't have any assets other than paid off vehicles with no income.

#

We don't do the silly stuff like putting a new car on that has to be done w/ bank transfers/etc.

I mean, not surprising. Decentraland was hilariously bad when I looked at the contracts a couple years ago.

wraith agate

well not surprised

whether the project was or wasn't built on crypto the problem here is the concept itself

simply put the idea of "Anywhere anything, any time in a game of everything everywhere all of the time." is just bullshit

This doesn’t instill a lot of confidence in the 7800X3D then if the major issue seems to come from lower power targets

sly elk

so uh

#

TIL

#

MY SSD IS BENT

#

it seems, if you tighten the side with that little silver spacer

#

it pulls the ssd towards the heatsink instead of holding it against the motherboard

#

the irritating part is looking at the instruction manual, I am doing it the way they said to do it.. -shrug-

wraith agate
#

If you did it as in the instructions and it caused damage they should replace it

sly elk
#

it still works haha

wraith agate
#

Well then

potent arrow
wraith agate
#

Please stop bending SSDs

sly elk
#

but yea I checked

#

the problem is the standoff on the heatsink

#

though looking at that pic, maybe the standoff on the board isn't the right one? hah

#

if I put the ssd in without the heatsink cover it sits just right

potent arrow
#

Ngl I think you are doing something wrong

#

But also, I've seen bending no matter what. So maybe it's fine as it looks relatively...ok

odd sand
#

Back off the screw a little bit, it should be fine though/.

sly elk
#

imma put the new SSD in the pcie card i bought instead of mounting it on the motherboard

#

also

that's amusing lol

both of my drives are 1tb..

hwinfo64 lists them correctly at least ^^

#

i'm not sure i believe the on time for either of my ssds...

i have an old M.2 SSD i ripped out of a old Surface Pro, it constantly reports 50C temps, no matter what, NEVER changes

sly elk
#

hehe

#

maybe that's what happened with my first drive

#

but it's between the cpu and the gpu so maybe it's just toastier there

void dove
#

annoyed me as it would show that constantly as the highest drive temp 😛

#

so i forced it to show 30 instead

added a -20 offset

sly walrus
#

kupo being a disappointment just means it’s relatable

sly elk
#

ahh yess shiny new ssd

#

hmm that's weird

#

oh right i haven't enabled that pcie slot running at 4x yet

#

i wonder why a smaller pcie multiplier yields higher GT/s

void dove
#

depends on the PCIE generation

#

that doesn't show the gen, only the lanes

#

speeds usually double every gen

#

ah, i think thats more likely communicating the generation, not the actual speed

#

PCIE 3.0, is 8GT/s, per lane

#

and PCIE 4.0, is 16GT/s per lane

#

so assuming thats accurate, its kinda telling you the math for the max GT/s

#

so first one is 2x 16, so 32

#

2nd one, is 4x 8 so same, 32, assuming its a 4.0 compatible ssd

sly elk
#

It is but the motherboard is a z390 lol

void dove
#

speeds will vary depending on the controllers of course, some controllers are absolute crap

sly elk
#

That's a good point though

void dove
#

not only the motherboard controller, IF it uses a extra chip to add more lanes split off from the northbridge i think?

#

but also the controller on the SSDs themselves

#

if they have shit Dram cache, or basically none

sly elk
#

I'm curious what it'll sya when I tell it to disabke the on board sata and give me x4 on the slot instead lol

void dove
#

the throughput is gonna be trash

#

hmm yea, z390 is only pcie3.0 compatible from what i can see

#

which means, running a SSD with less lanes, is gonna be half the speed

sly elk
#

This one's a p5+ so it should have decent dram

void dove
#

that Crucial one, would be running half its potential speed

sly elk
#

Indeed

#

I'll fix the slot xonfig tomorrow lol

#

Then I'll speed test it and see if it performs OK in that slot

void dove
#

well, can you even do anything about it?
with no pcie 4.0 on the mobo?

#

other than just, it runs slower than it could

sly elk
#

Right lol but that's fine

void dove
#

ah, well that model should be a Gen4 x4 lanes

#

so it showing as 2x doesn't look right to me

sly elk
#

Board defaults that slot to x2 but you can make it x4 by disabling the Sata controller

void dove
#

ahhhh ok, now i get it

sly elk
#

Yep lol

void dove
#

shared lanes are fun

sly elk
#

It was a really good price so

#

I'm not planning to upgrade from my 9700k just yet

void dove
#

2TB is nice 🙂

sly elk
#

Maybe after the 7800x3d comes out lol

void dove
#

i didn't bother with NVME when i upgraded a year or so ago

sly elk
#

I admit some of the 599 7900x deals mixroxentwe has been having have been tempting

void dove
#

just stuck with a SATA M.2, but got a 2TB

sly elk
#

They're so cheap now

void dove
#

oh yea, i wanna see the 7800x3d

sly elk
#

That one was 122

#

Lol I got my brother a cheap 2tb Intel 670p for 80 bucks

void dove
#

nice

sly elk
#

Made a perfect ssd for using in a USB enclosure

#

But even the sata ssds are nice and fast

void dove
#

tbh, i dont see much need for NVME speeds
most games can't really utilise it, a regular SSD is damn fast already

#

but to each their own

#

most NVME speed is lost on gaming

sly elk
#

At this moment in time it's likely cheaper to get nvme

void dove
#

if its not much difference in price, then yea, why not, if its cheaper, no brainer 😄

#

unfortunately, when i was upgrading, the good NVMEs i could fine, were way more expensive than good SATA SSDs

couldn't really justify the cost

On the one hand I want to build an ITX pc myself; I could keep a few of my own parts and keep the cost down a bit.

On the other hand all the good ITX cases are scarce AF and can't fit the best GPUs.

Or could order the Chronos from Origin. It would be more expensive, but it would come in a good ITX case, and it can fit both a 4080 OR a 7900 XTX since unlike us randos Origin actually has access to the reference models (and some bigger cards).

Not my ideal out come

#

The amd gpus are able to match 40 series with 2 8 pins so there's definitely an argument to be made

#

And ray tracing is so small used that its not much lost if you don't get an nvidia gpu

lime wasp
#

Let's be fair.

The 7900XT and XTX are roughly the 4070Ti and 4080. The 4070 Ti definitely didn't need the 12vHPWR cable but Nvidia just didn't want to bother, so L for Nvidia.

The XTX vs. the 4080 is a weird one because the 7900 XTX actually beats the 4080 for rasterization (raw) output even at 4k with less power....but then is absolutely decimated in Ray Tracing which is where the juice sucking comes from in the 4080 and why it wants the 12vHWPR.

#

Of course the 4090 is the 4090.

celest violet
#

Yeah but so few games ray trace I don't think its fair to really make it an L

Unless you are specifically going out of your way to play those

that four-way adapter for 12vhpwr is annoying as fuck, it takes up so much space

#

I ordered some components from CableMod to improve the situation, but they don't ship for another two weeks

celest violet

If you have the psu for it its definitely a lot better to get the direct cable

lime wasp
#

Honestly I'd just get a new PSU with a 12vHWPR if I were y'all. They still come with regular PCIE cables so it will work with 30 Series/7900 cards

Maybe that new Corsair SHIFT one.

celest violet
#

I understand the point of the 12vhpwr, just think its made poorly

#

Maybe add another set of clamps to verify the things secure

inland mauve
#

I really wish I had just bought a PSU with a 12vhpwr connector but I wasn't paying attention

lime wasp
#

The Adapter is pretty bad, but I believe the ones that actually come with one standard are good quality and don't have the adapter issues.

#

The one that came with my Silverstone is pretty nice, even though I don't need it.

celest violet
#

Haven't read into that, huge if true tbh. But then i gotta upgrade psu as well 😔

lime wasp
#

If you have a Corsair PSU I think they sell a 12vHPWR cable that works with their older PSUs.

celest violet
#

Not like my 3080 will need replaced for a bit anyway

Nah I have an evga unfortunately but the price was really good

I have an nvme ssd in a usb-c enclosure, I just ended up buying a usb-a to usb-c cable for times when I want to plug it into computers that don't have usb-c lol

#

sadly a cable that supports usb 3.2 speed is $10 >>

torpid kayak
#

gimme :3

sly elk
#

what's really disappointing is when I buy a new gadget and it has a micro-b connector

#

or worse

#

this awful thing

#

really I think I hate any usb connector that isn't A or C

#

the original type B was kinda cool though

#

2.0 type B looks so goofy but it's even easier to use

#

but the sockets are terrible on a device that moves around a bit because they WILL break

Nah, just right.

#

don't you love Sony and its cable? 😄

sly elk
#

LOL

#

that cable is nothing dude

#

peak sony ericsson

#

I believe that was the worst phone charger cable I've ever seen

torpid kayak
#

used to has an old iphone 4 and this cable

sly elk
#

yea that cable was terrible too, but the ericsson cable was worse

deep sapphire
#

Micro USB is the single worst connector in history

sly elk
#

hmm the phanteks nv7 is interesting

#

I had the Sony Ericsson that had the folding cover over the keypad. That thing was something

sly elk
#

i like how it has spots for 2 fans in the back

torpid kayak
sly elk
#

it also has a nifty rear door to hide ze cables

celest violet
#

That's actually pretty cool ngl

torpid kayak
#

door is cool

celest violet
#

A shame I already spent way too much on my corsair case

torpid kayak
#

gimme if you still have changes

sly elk
#

aw dang the sides aren't hinged

#

i think they screw on

#

ugh screw on glass panels are the worst

celest violet
#

Believe me I get tempted on the kronii hyte y60 way too much...

torpid kayak
#

door!

celest violet
#

But I have to stick to this 200 dollar case because of buyers guilt lmao

torpid kayak
#

wish every panel a door!

sly elk
#

hmm actually

#

it looks like the glass panels are latched somehow

#

not screw-on

torpid kayak
#

just duct tape some dust filters :3

#

hm 30 degree C room temp

deep sapphire
#

Problem with the NV7 is it’s massive and the glass isn’t bonded together

#

Looks cool though I agree

No, you just need something that supports higher Volts or Amps

#

If you look at a wall adapter it usually has several modes on them from 5,9,12,15V and sometimes 20V

#

The higher the volts it can negotiate a connection for, the faster your charge will be.

#

And better than a $1 USB-C cable

torpid kayak
#

so it worth investing in type-c to type-c cable for charging? my charger is pretty bulky to lug around

odd sand
#

Could get something like this to replace your charger if its a chonker. Otherwise I think there's a 20W one for slightly cheaper as well

#

The GaN ones (Gallium Nitride) are the newer style that can be a lot smaller than standard charging blocks

torpid kayak
#

that name is as long as an isekai manga title

odd sand
#

My portable projector came with a 65W regular Anker USB-C adapter and nice cable, so I've just been using those

#

(Or the Steam deck adapter heh)

#

They want to put everything in the title so it ranks higher in search results

torpid kayak
#

hm okay

One of the more realistic interpretations on "AI will take our jobs!"

torpid kayak
#

just makes an AI that manages AI to preventing messing up

#

"Who is going to watch the Watchers?"

torpid kayak
# sly elk

the artist who draws this comic is gonna be replaced by AI soon :3

#

also, since it is Square Enix: we gonna make a game with GPT!

sly elk
#

i think you'll still hvae a market for stuff hand-made by artists

torpid kayak
#

yeah, kinda like handmade baskets

sly elk
#

that's probably more common than you'd expect
