umbral moss
#

more specifically, a certain subsection of government that barely squeaked out a majority does not care about privacy

modern iris
#

Apple already has in place data tracking blockers, it is now up to individual software carriers to regulate. Congress does not care

umbral moss
#

after cambridge analytica came to light, people started digging into just what these companies are doing with user data

#

the measures keep getting blocked by the usual suspects

graceful pine
#

banning the ccp from accessing data, can kickstart a chain of privacy at least potentially

modern iris
#

Yea, I absolutely agree.

graceful pine
#

it's better than nothing

umbral moss
#

as far as I understand it, you can't even do business as a company in china without CCP support

modern iris
#

Until congress is phased out with younger people, our tech policies will not be reformed.

graceful pine
#

I'd rather one app gets banned than nothing happens at all

umbral moss
#

our chinese subsidiary was founded by someone with ties to the CCP

modern iris
graceful pine
modern iris
#

It isnt about our privacy, its about just blantant racism, and them trying to stop our international abilities to talk to one another fast.

#

GenZ had record breaking votes this past couple of years, due to TikTok

umbral moss
graceful pine
#

it's national security

#

like it or not it's a cold war

umbral moss
#

like, imagine congress packed to the brim with 4chan posters

modern iris
umbral moss
#

fucking hell

graceful pine
#

so yes

modern iris
#

Where exactly do you think our data from Facebook gets sold to?

umbral moss
#

"lmao epic lulz trolled" proceeds to veto every bill just to be a contrarian dickhead for clout

deep sapphire
#

Interesting didn’t know that

#

Also do not discuss politics in this discord

modern iris
#

Our convo was good tho :(

#

but i get it

uneven spade
#

if you remember, the 750Ti was popular like mad

#

and the 750Ti was a Maxwell 1 card

deep sapphire
#

Lmao obsolete after 6 months

umbral moss
#

I just knew that they gutted compute functionality on the 700 series because they realized people were buying 480s as cheap compute cards and that's why they struggled with GPGPU stuff

#

yeah, me either

deep sapphire
#

It really sucks the market was awful for the 3000 series because the 3080 at MSRP was a bargain

#

And then nvidia just felt like fucking everyone over

uneven spade
#

best buy ever

umbral moss
deep sapphire
#

Lucky, I tried to get into the queue but you all know how that went

uneven spade
umbral moss
#

and then nvidia realized everyone would pay $2000 for a GPU so they just changed the prices accordingly

uneven spade
#

got it as a legit customer

lost python
#

Idk if i would call a card that was priced at like 700-800 after taxes, and is already obsolete due to the limited VRAM, a bargain

odd sand
umbral moss
odd sand
#

Wasn't /b/ just a bunch of tweens and teens shitposting gross/edgy stuff tho?

uneven spade
umbral moss
#

ah, but poe's corollary

lost python
#

Even in 1440p the VRAM struggles with more and more games now

umbral moss
#

when you shitpost often enough, people who believe that shit seriously start posting and it's impossible to tell the difference

odd sand
#

And their general aversion to anything "3DPD"

lost python
#

This shouldn't happen with such an expensive card especially after Nvidia tried to shit on AMD with "our VRAM is faster so you won't notice the lack of memory"

umbral moss
#

"haha buy a titan card if you want more VRAM"

lost python
#

10gb actually for the 3080

umbral moss
#

bitch, 12GB of VRAM isn't worth $800

lost python
#

12gb was the 3080ti at 1200

odd sand
#

Yeah I have a 10gb 3080 card, but its been fine so far bc I still primarily use it on 1080p

umbral moss
#

my titan from 2016 has 12 lmao

#

in 7 years they've only increased it on the fucking 4090

odd sand
#

I've been considering getting a 1440p 34" UW though, so I might run into some barriers then

#

I had a 1660ti with 6gb before then though so...

deep sapphire
#

Lmao my PC is so old, I’m thinking about buying a gaming laptop but they never seem to last more than a couple years

umbral moss
#

then again, nvidia also fucked themselves with the way they designed their memory controllers so they can't increase the capacity in nice steps of 2

uneven spade
#

normal 1440p but didn't encounter any weird limitations for now. also games that were problematic got patched

#

might replace in late 2024 or so

umbral moss
#

"let's build a three-channel 128-bit memory controller"

lost python
#

At least Nvidia learned with the new gen

odd sand
uneven spade
#

I wouldn't say so

graceful pine
#

I bought like a cheap gaming laptop just for music though

#

I run my DAW on it

lost python
#

Well at least Nvidia learned for their higher end cards

#

_>

odd sand
#

Why do you need a gaming laptop for music then, you could get any laptop or even like a surface pro tablet

uneven spade
#

only the 4080 and 4090 have enough VRAM. 4070Ti is at bare minimum amount, 4060 is literal joke

lost python
#

The 4070 in general is a joke

graceful pine
#

they are very powerful software's

uneven spade
#

it undervolts well, that's the only good thing about it XDD

lost python
#

Literally 2 good cards this gen and both are 500€ too much

odd sand
#

Since I have the 3080 I'm probably good until at least the 6000 series, but I might splurge on 5000 series if the price/perf is there and I can spare the cash

uneven spade
#

tbh, after the 50 series launch or so. try to look for used 4090s

umbral moss
#

5090 for $5000

lost python
#

3090s have become so cheap, i hope the same happens to the 4090 given how it's already scratching down at the 1600€ mark

deep sapphire
#

The 4090 is the only GPU that had any value to it

#

The 4080 isn’t bad but 1300 bucks like what a joke

lost python
#

Yeah the 4080 would be great at like 800

real edge
#

if they rise prices again they will completely outprice their selling demographic and give AMD a chance, I do not think they want that

uneven spade
#

actually might be a good deal

graceful pine
#

and also this was like an 800 dollar lenova gaming laptop

#

that's what you need for a daw

#

just a cheap gaming rig

odd sand
#

Considering my 3080 was 800, I would expect the 4090 to be like $1000 to be in line with the price stepping, not double the cost

lost python
#

I kinda want to upgrade my 6900xt already because the coil whine is annoying as hell

uneven spade
#

the appeal of buying new gpus is at all time low. both AMD and NVIDIA reported a hard decline in GPU sales

deep sapphire
lost python
#

True first world problems with me complaining about my card making noise because battlefield runs at 170fps

graceful pine
#

I just have a 3060ti

deep sapphire
#

Rob keeping the lights on at DICE

graceful pine
#

no desire to upgrade for awhile

odd sand
#

A 4080 mobile is not the same as a 4080 desktop

deep sapphire
#

I know

lost python
deep sapphire
#

But a desktop 4080 is 1300 bucks

odd sand
#

Also wouldn't you be keeping any of your existing hardware, or have you neglected it for so long the only thing worth keeping is the SSD?

deep sapphire
#

Then I gotta get everything else and it’s probably gonna be near 3 grand minimum

#

I have a 6700K and 1070 lmao

#

It’s not worth anything

uneven spade
#

eww skylake

umbral moss
#

yeah, like, buying a worthy successor to my PC is in the ballpark of $5000

#

assuming I reuse a handful of parts I already have like pumps and reservoirs

uneven spade

I certainly don't miss the latency from Skylake to Comet Lake

dull garnet

also true

umbral moss
odd sand
#

I dunno, I still think if you aren't going to really be moving it anywhere and have the possibility you might upgrade parts in it in less than 7-10 years, the desktop is still the better value. Even if you aren't saving now, you set yourself to save later by re-using stuff

Do you need a monitor as well Hank? Otherwise I could help price something out if you want. As much as ppl shit on the 4070ti, isn't it actually pretty decent for sub-4K gaming?

I should really spend a weekend going through my multiple reinstall folders and actually cleaning shit up and figure out what I want to keep backed up

I did a little bit of that a few weeks ago when it was like versions of apps or utilities 10+ years old and I have no intention of using them again, or I have multiple copies of picture folders etc.

Need to run a utility that can delete any dupes and then combine them all into one folder

was debating between getting a PC with 3080 from a shop near my house within walking distance, or one with a 6800 XT (what I want) from another shop which is farther. Cuz the latter has weird CPU+mobo promotion (12600k at discounted but go with an overpriced mobo) that inflates prices, both options are priced roughly the same.
this afternoon I carried a whole PC case for warranty. 15-20 minutes hugging the case on a motorbike backseat is not exactly a fun experience to go through.
now I'm super leaning toward buying near house.

umbral moss

good enough is the rule when you're starting out

#

try to shoot above darktide efficiency, but don't go crazy trying to make it 100% playable on a toaster

Still undecided on if I should use Unity or UE5 for my SRPG

#

I feel like Unity would be lighter on system resources and I already know C# but C++ shouldn't be that different

umbral moss
#

probably unity, UE5 doesn't seem to have many good off the shelf modules for RPG functions

#

almost everything in UE RPG related is done with custom stuff as far as I know

odd sand
#

And at this point I've basically forgotten everything about the Unity API, so it's probably about as much effort to learn either one.

wraith agate
#

and it is important when you do a movement shooter

odd sand
#

I figured as much. I tried making the game years ago already and there didn't seem to be any books talking about common equations for stuff like EXP curves, buffs etc.

lost python
#

gamedev with unity feels like you are trying to piece things together with ducttape and you constantly have to go to the hardware store to buy a small thing that does what you need, because the construction kit you bought only has a barely working shit version of it

odd sand
#

So I was going to just look to stuff like MMO theorycrafting where they've hacked together equations

wraith agate
#

oh suggestion, don't do Unity

I heard it isn't doing well nowadays

That said, I think it's important for there to be at least two good general purposes engines out there.

#

I don't want an industry where 100% of everything is just UE

#

Sure it does but like, I had Calc like 10+ years ago so it would be nice to have a primer that talked about the sorts of equations you want for different things

Since for a love of me can't get the goddamn game to keep checking whether the player stopped moving so reset their speed. Since you really don't want them to untoggle sprint. Well I mean you could want that, I don't. I want them to commit to the sprint.

odd sand
#

I thought you said it was to keep sprint always on?

wraith agate
#

Yeah but I use blueprints

#

And blue prints don't really give much in the terms of if else

odd sand
#

Or did you mean toggle as in just you sprint when left shift is held down?

wraith agate
#

Nope that's what the default setup did

#

I made it when you press shift once, it turns sprint on

#

Then when you stop the game resets the movement speed to walk speed

odd sand
#

Ah okay. I thought you meant you wanted an "always sprinting" toggle like many games offer in config so you don't have to constantly press shift

wraith agate
#

...

#

You are literally saying what I said

odd sand
#

you said when you stop it goes back to walkspeed, but anyways cool on figuring it out. I remember when learning Unity it took me like 6hrs to figure out how to make a pivot camera

wraith agate
#

I haven't even done camera stuff yet 😭

odd sand
#

Couldn't find any documentation, and ppl on the forum couldn't help me either which baffled me bc it seemed like a basic camera

wraith agate
#

Tbh rn the way I do it is the hackiest shit ever

odd sand
#

What helped me understand Quaternions was to use a salt and pepper shaker, but really any 2 cylinders will work and put a piece of tape on them for the 0 degree/"front" point

#

And think about whatever motion you want the camera to do is a combination of turning and moving around the circumference of a circle.

#

So in my case, the solution to pressing the L1/R1 to pivot 90 degrees around the character was equally incrementing a quaternion rotate and a quaternion move

wraith agate
#

Because what I do is set the max walk speed. What I should be doing is change the movement mode on the character and change the movement speed that way, along with triggering a timeline that plays the animation curve looped instead of just walking faster

odd sand
#

Because if you use the cylinders you realize if you want the camera to face the character the entire time it needs to turn at the same speed it moves around the circle.

wraith agate
#

Yeah that sounds very basic

#

Yeah I could watch that tutorial

odd sand

It is, but if you have no frame of reference, no videos, no books etc. it took awhile to get.

and what kinda cpu would the chronos have?

#

those boards are on sale for 399 lol

#

admittedly I don't think I'd want to go this far

#

ahhahaa

#

With that in mind, the EVGA 690 is not designed for pulling back on the throttle. No, it's designed for enthusiast overclockers, even now. There are no options for power limiting your CPU. There are no presets to encourage thermal efficiency, such as an eco mode. Additionally, in the last year or so, EVGA, a company that was once known for its amazing support, has left much of their consumer base out to dry. Don't believe me? Check out the first couple of pages of their support page for this motherboard. I doubt you'll find any answers to the myriad of problems consumers face.

Its quiet

#

By full blast, what do you mean?

#

The fans are running, but not like. Overworking.

sly elk
#

where is the monitor plugged in?

#

I mean you build the computer so

#

i doubt it's plugged into the wrong place

glossy ravine
#

It's plugged into the right places and all.

#

But that doesn't explain why the system just kinda. Mills about and the monitor says what it does.

#

The lights on the MB that indicate what's the issue aren't on either.

If so
First: can you disconnect ALL disks and drives as possible from the motherboard?
This will promt you to BIOS, I'm a bit suspecting that maybe Mint having some weird thingy there

If it boots: ok, grab your linux live disk, plug in, set boot priority to the live disk, reconnect the drives, then use live disk to diagnose
If no signal: try other monitor (like a TV idk)

glossy ravine
#

My sister used a USB to install Linux.

fair parcel
#

just install Windows GIGAChatting

glossy ravine
#

We had windows on it originally. She changed that to Linux.

deep sapphire
#

Yeah if you are having disk failure or memory failure it can cause your PC not to post

#

Disk failure usually will post but will take a long time

glossy ravine
#

Disk meaning storage?

deep sapphire
#

Yeah

golden stream
#

Live disk here means USB
And disk/drives mean internal storage like SSD/HDD/whatever

#

anyway I have a 120GB of crappy SSD to play around with linux distros letzgo uwucarby

why is that in one case with 580s

But same thing

I thought the D15 was relatively recent

#

was the D14 available at the time of the 580?

deep sapphire

Nah D14 came out in like 2010

oh so I guess that this was a top end system for 2010

sly elk
#

you gonna build a new computer hank?

glossy ravine
#

Aside from all that, we effectively are locked out of the computer. My sister never gave us the password to it.

I've had no luck trying to pull the Grub menu up.

#

When booting up, (when it does work) it just goes to the lock screen.

golden stream
#

Me: nuke from the orbit it is

#

The thing is not the grub, but BIOS

glossy ravine
#

Preferably like to keep the data on it.

golden stream
#

Ah

#

Hmmmm if so, disconnect the Mint drive, spend some money for new drive, put in, fresh install

#

Storage is generally cheapo tho

glossy ravine
#

So any hard drive?

sly elk
golden stream
#

Prefer SSD but any hard drive works

glossy ravine
sly elk
#

oh ok

#

i was going to say, I've found some interesting things happen if you have 2 drives in your computer and 1 runs windows

glossy ravine
#

Like. She outright replaced windows for Linux Mint Cinnamon 21.1

sly elk
#

if you install linux to a drive first, then install windows on the other drive while the linux drive is plugged in

#

it'll casually nuke grub and whatever efi bootloader stuff you have on the linux drive and put the windows bootloader there instead of on the windows drive

golden stream
#

Ya that's why dualboot recommend to instal windows first then linux later for grub

golden stream
glossy ravine
#

Replaced I think.

The PC never gave the option to pick which to go into.

sly elk
#

ah ok

#

you might need to use a usb stick with some other bootloader on it

golden stream
#

^

sly elk
#

and then maybe use f8/f12/delete/whatever to catch the bios boot menu

glossy ravine
#

We still have the USB she used to install Linux on it.

sly elk
#

yea

#

so what's the goal?

#

sorry I may have missed some stuff here xD

golden stream
#

Or, since you kinda inherite it
Remove ALL disks, then connect new disks of your own, install linux/windows/whatever to your liking, the old disks can send back to your sister
Easiest way

glossy ravine
#

Basically just get access to the admin stuff. See what's there, if anything is worth saving, before replacing it with windows.

#

She always was so secretive...

golden stream
#

Eh, basic privacy y know

sly elk
#

i think fade is saying their sister isn't around anymore...

glossy ravine
#

nods

sly elk
#

sorry 😦

glossy ravine
#

Like. On this plane of existence.

golden stream
#

Hmmmm

sly elk
#

so I'd start with the usb stick, maybe it has the ability to do livecd stuff?

#

ahem 'live usb'

#

does it give you an option to start linux off the usb stick?

#

oof correction

#

if it does and your sister didn't encrypt the ssd, you should be able to get in and run passwd on the account to change it

#

there's also the option of starting in single user mode probably

golden stream
#

The live usb has single user as standard mode iirc

sly elk
#

aye

#

When the GRUB menu shows, select a "rescue mode" option if you have one. If you do not have one, use e to edit your normal bootstrap selection and add in a -s or a -b to the kernel command line, for rescue mode and emergency mode respectively. ⎈ Control+X boots with the edited command line, of course.

glossy ravine
#

This was the USB with the Linux install iirc.

golden stream
#

?????????????

glossy ravine
#

She had a few usbs. Hacking school Chromebooks.

sly elk
#

dude just get a fresh linux usb together

golden stream
#

Powershell is windows tho

sly elk
#

and then use that

glossy ravine
#

Okay.

golden stream
#

Is Debian still have some backward compatible right?

glossy ravine
#

Certainly hope She didn't lock downloads...

sly elk
#

can't do it from another computer?

glossy ravine
#

I can, it's just inconvenient to do so.

golden stream
#

Better do it in another computer

#

It maybe inconvenient but you need tool to work on it

sly elk
#

yea

#

also to not risk wrecking what's on your sis' computer

golden stream
#

Well that's why I proposed the easier way of replacing the disks, so they can have a PC to work atm while gradually research the matter

sly elk
#

-nods-

#

that's smart but if it's a laptop it may be some work to get the disk out

#

wonder what model

golden stream
#

They mentioned something of hacked school chromebook?

glossy ravine
#

Yukari, was her name.

#

What distribution of Linux should I use?

golden stream
#

Recommend Mint

glossy ravine
#

Built her a PC for Christmas.

golden stream
#

Ohhhh desktop
That's actually way easier to work with

glossy ravine
#

Mint is what Yukari put on the desktop.

#

Will that cause issues?

golden stream
#

Nope

glossy ravine
#

Noted.

golden stream
#

I recommend Mint for liveUSB mostly for the same commands, so easier for you (and us) to work on

glossy ravine
#

She was brilliant with this kind of stuff.

#

School gave her a Chromebook to help with school during motions wildly to the past few years

#

And either out of boredom or curiosity, she found a way around the school's restrictions.

#

Cinnamon or MATE?

golden stream
#

Chromebook is actually built based on linux, with a lot of restriction

#

Any

glossy ravine
#

Cinnamon it is.

#

Shit, I need a torrent software for this...

The only other PC I have access to is a Chromebook. >.>

#

Or.

#

I can't read apparently

golden stream
#

Ah no need, usually there is a direct download mirror

#

Torrent is uh, kinda last resort if no mirror works

glossy ravine
#

There we are.
