At least nvidia makes it obvious who to blame with everything labeled NV' :D

modern iris
#

true

#

AMD is confusing sometimes.

cerulean talon
#

Replace "Some" with "All"

#

Though, neither of them holds a fucking candle to xilinx.

modern iris
#

Nah from time to time I know what's the problem

graceful sparrow
#

I don't know

cerulean talon
#

Jfc, they have the worst fucking naming schemes.

graceful sparrow
#

I did nothing to my PC or the game

golden stream
#

huh looks like driver issue to me

modern iris
graceful sparrow
#

it just happened while playing world of darkness

cerulean talon
#

I know nvidia rolled a drive update a couple days ago.

cerulean talon
golden stream
#

blame nvidia haha

I don't know shit, I'm sorry

modern iris
#

ok that's worse

graceful sparrow
#

DDU?

graceful sparrow
#

where do I get that?

modern iris
#

there

golden stream

cerulean talon

9/10's asleep, still can google at speed. :Softwaredevs:

one of these yeah?

Damn the netherlands are the favourite I see

cerulean talon
#

No versions, of course.

golden stream
#

the host location should not important with stonk internet tho

cerulean talon
#

Just git shas for versioning.

jaunty light
#

dont need versioning if you keep appending new to it

modern iris
#

Nah since I have to give the order to start a project I can name it what ever I want

what do I do here?

I don't know what to do right now

cerulean talon

I'm slightly better about it now, because my code's used by more people.

modern iris
modern iris
cerulean talon
#

Classically, my code is used by a very, very smol number of people.

graceful sparrow
#

what do i do here?

cerulean talon
#

It's only more recently my code has seen large enough uptake that I auctually care.

modern iris
#

Nah I have 200ppl using it

cerulean talon
#

1k is when I started to care.

graceful sparrow

please, help

cerulean talon

And/or when I get phone calls about it.

this one yeah?

cerulean talon
#

Technically, I can't update FAQ.

real edge
# graceful sparrow what do i do here?

download the new driver from your manufacturers website (nvidia/amd), restart the pc in safe mode, run DDU to uninstall your old drivers, then disconnect your internet as the PC restarts(clean and restart), then install the drivers you downloaded

sharp star
#

Windows will always try to install ancient-ass drivers

cerulean talon
sharp star
#

So this is why the “disconnect yourself from the internet” part is important

graceful sparrow
#

How do I do safe mode?

cerulean talon
#

I'm mildly surprised there's not a DDU thread in tech-support.

sharp star
#

Start > Change advanced startup options (assuming 10/11)

real edge
#

hmm I do not make FAQs but I can try

cerulean talon
#

I don't have access.

modern iris
sharp star
#

I think it’s Advanced Startup

cerulean talon
#

I'm not important enough. :(

sharp star
#

Yeah I think you can make a FAQ for DDU but you should also link Nvidia/AMD/Intel drivers as well (not specific driver pages)

cerulean talon
#

@modest moss Just saying, it exists.

jaunty light
graceful sparrow
cerulean talon
#

I can't make FAQ's, but I can turn on and off catgirls.

cerulean talon
#

Physx is part of the Nvidia driver suite.

graceful sparrow
#

that loading bar is gone now...

modern iris
jaunty light
#

it makes fizzy effects

#

hence fizzicks

graceful sparrow
#

I can just close this now yeah?

sharp star
cerulean talon
modern iris
#

No more backpain

graceful sparrow
modern iris
#

yes

graceful sparrow
#

now...what do I do?

cerulean talon
#

Reboot.

modern iris
#

that

graceful sparrow
#

in safe mode yeah?

cerulean talon
#

No.

#

Just normal, you just need to reload the drivers.

graceful sparrow
#

ok

cerulean talon
#

Step one: Did you install a driver? Reboot.

modern iris
#

@cerulean talon should I tell u smth scarry?

cerulean talon
#

Step two: Are you sure you didn't install a driver? Reboot?

cerulean talon
modern iris
graceful sparrow
#

How do I check the driver?

cerulean talon
#

Booting that over usb 1.0 on an external drive.

#

Now that's scary.

cerulean talon
graceful sparrow
#

I meant check

cerulean talon
#

Nvida geforce experience.

modern iris
#

Or from a floppy drive

cerulean talon
modern iris
#

I mean someone made an installer on floppy for windows 10

modern iris
#

That's pain

golden stream
#

I won't ask how I would ask WHY

jaunty light
#

Insert floppy 1 of 10234 to begin Windows 11 installation.

cerulean talon
#

Did you see the IDE SSD's? :D

golden stream
#

you can do et doesn't mean you SHOULD do it

graceful sparrow
#

this is the right one yeah?

cerulean talon
cerulean talon
graceful sparrow

neat

modern iris
cerulean talon
#

My ability to do something means I should do it.

graceful sparrow
#

nothing more I need to do?

cerulean talon
modern iris
sharp star
#

no

cerulean talon
#

Hackaday had a decent article on it.

sharp star
#

If your game crashes again you might need to replace/RMA your GPU

#

because that could point to a hardware problem

graceful sparrow
#

Cause it only started crashing today

modern iris
modern iris
#

wow

#

I did not expect that

graceful sparrow
#

i am not sure is this an old display

modern iris

cerulean talon
#

I've got one, and it's amazing >.>

modern iris
graceful sparrow
#

When should I start thinking about getting a new display?

modern iris
graceful sparrow
#

Like, how old of a display, should I start concerning

cerulean talon
#

Check this baby out.

sharp star
#

depends on how old because I went with a first-gen G-Sync monitor for years before it started exhibiting issues

graceful sparrow
#

I mean like, display card

jaunty light
#

i think they mean a GPU

graceful sparrow
#

Yeah

#

GPU

modern iris
#

@cerulean talon boot windows 10 from that

jaunty light
#

until it doesnt work or perform like you want

cerulean talon
modern iris
#

:P

sharp star
#

you can still get away with a 30 series GPU now that they're dropping in price and GPU mining is effectively dead

cerulean talon
#

Sorta-ish.

#

They're trying again still.

modern iris
cerulean talon
#

But ETH mining, which is what demanded the nvidia cards, is dead.

modern iris
cerulean talon
#

I work in that space. :P

sharp star
#

If Jensen ever pulls his head out of his ass then maybe we'll see a price reduction on 40 series cards

cerulean talon
#

So I'm kept abreast of all major miner developments.

modern iris
sharp star
#

Intel's at least looking promising but they still have a ways to go with their formerly absolutely broken drivers

royal forge
#

Can we take it out back and

modern iris
cerulean talon
#

So we'll see ASIC's in 6 months.

modern iris
cerulean talon
#

And work with the mining devs.

sharp star
#

yeah, their newest drivers were heavily focused on DX9 and they still need work

#

DX11/12 were largely the same

jaunty light
cerulean talon
#

In the GPU mining side, Kaspa's the big one atm, but FPGA impls are coming from TRM.

modern iris
#

before I got the 7900xtx I thought about getting an Intel card just for encoding

cerulean talon
#

But they don't use enough memory to demand high end nvidia cards.

#

ETH was the nasty mofo in the room that drove nvidia through the roof because AMD didn't work well on it >.>

#

Which is why you could still occassionaly get AMD cards.

How to do a clean reinstall of your drivers

Step 1: Download Device Driver Uninstaller.

Step 2: Download the newest driver from your graphics card manufacturers website: AMD and/or Nvidia.

Step 3: Disconnect your internet and restart your PC in safe mode.

Step 4: Run Device Driver Uninstaller and click on 'Clean and Restart' after you select your device type and GPU.

Step 5: After the PC restarts and you are disconnected from the internet, install the drivers you downloaded from Step 2.

Step 6: After you install them, restart your PC one final time and reconnect your internet.

real edge
#

there, you can now use this command

modern iris
#

Yeah. I always liked AMD but till the current cards I never had a reason to use there stuff except the CPU's since Ryzen

cerulean talon
#

Yeah, 7xxx is the first one's I'm considering.

#

I've got a 6900xt up in my dev rigs, but I need the vram for my monitors.

jaunty light

the 6k VR stuff is what the 100tb storage is for

cerulean talon
#

Most of ours is 4k movies.

#

.>

#

We went a little crazy with usenet.

modern iris
cerulean talon
#

So we've got a 70tb array for shows, and a 50tb array for movies. :P

#

Then the rest of the arrays are either highly redundant or SSD.

modern iris
#

I got 90 for both

#

like all together. No split

cerulean talon
#

Yeah.

#

We had to split ours due to the disk limits of the old nas.

modern iris
cerulean talon
#

Couldn't slap in another raid card. :D

#

So I just bought a new NAS. Until I upgrade the old one to an epyc.

modern iris
# cerulean talon Ran out of PCIe slots. :(

Last time I upgraded the NAS I moved everything over to my main PC cause back then I had enough storage for that in there build a new NAS with the old drives and moved everything back. That was still over 12TB on a 1G connection.

real edge
#

how I started the decade

cerulean talon
#

#

And just being "F all this"

modern iris

I already have a place to jam my tape drive soon(tm)

modern iris
#

I never used tape drive but I heard they great and expensive

cerulean talon
#

Very expensive, very large.

modern iris
#

Nice

cerulean talon
#

I want to use it for bulk backups, I send everything small to rsync.net

#

Like 30tb+ per tape large.

#

Price wise is like 10-12k, so not terrible.

#

Go back a few gens to like 3-4tb tapes and you can get a drive for ak.

modern iris
#

ooof. I have like 30 filled up atm. And don't have any new stuff atm to put on the NAS except the daily backup of the PC and Laptop

cerulean talon
#

Haha.

#

Well, backup tools, but you know what I mean.

modern iris
#

Yeah

#

For the laptop I just use the old windows 7 backup cause I don't 100% care what happens to the files on it not that important. On the PC I have my own backup program.

cerulean talon
#

I tailscale everything to a secure nas these days.

#

Easier, then that gets shoved to rsync.

#

Like all my software dev happens over smb mounts.

#

:D

modern iris
#

I have to have SMB for the laptop and the phone and NFS on the PC

cerulean talon
#

I wish NFS on windows worked better :/

But yeah I use NFS for all the linux mounts.

cerulean talon

I wish it was better, really.

#

I'd love a good network file system overall, but they're all kinda bunk.

modern iris

Yeah. Imagine someone would work on making a better one at work most of the time

cerulean talon
#

I've thought about trying, but I'm not that good at low-level systems programming of that nature.

#

I'd have to do it in fuse or something.

jaunty light
#

the problem is sun made nfs and there is no undoing it

modern iris
#

True

cerulean talon
#

Not wrong.

#

I'll still take NFS over SMVB.

#

*SMB.

modern iris
#

SMB is trash even more than NFS.

jaunty light

just like ms made ntfs and still cant kill it dor fuck knows what they are pushing these days

You either have to cut off the parts of the video or remake it. You won't get around the stretching. I think. I'm not a video editor or anything like that tho

what I appreciated was that every average joe wanted upgradability and expansion slots.. lots of expansion slots

Yeah, but that was also ISA/AGP?/PCI days where we didn't have one nice easy slot

So you needed a ton of different crap.

the first lga 775 came out in december 2004

imagine if intel came out with an extremely faster processor 6 months after launching a new one now o_O

cerulean talon

sly elk

it's kinda hard to imagine turning around a whole chip design that quickly

cerulean talon

the funny/wild thing today

cerulean talon

Windows has it's place, but if you're not on something that's windows specific, yeet that to linux.

So uh long story short: my win10 FRESHLY INSTALLED nuked its bluetooth driver

Here's spec:
CPU (+GPU): R5 5600G (iirc 200USD)
Motherboard: Asus B550 ITX (tbh not rmb the price but I paid like 360USD or something around that)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance DDR4, 2666MHz bc f SEA I guess
Case + PSU: Inwin Chopin (recommend getting the Chopin Pro or whatever its refreshed rn)
Storage: cheap arse Kingstone NVMe 1TB

Monitor: XP-Pen Artist 12v1 (~160USD), yes I draw stuff
Keeb: Logitech k380, hey it's cute but tbh the feel is arse

I didn't know that was a thing until someone told me it was.

I had an old AMD CPU and then got my first "real PC" which was a XEON and I could not use the RAM in it.

I do want to figure out how this ram even reports 6.1, so many questions. Like how does it's controller handle it, how does the motherboard even know what to do with it..etc

I mean 6 would be somewhat reasonable but where do the .1 come from

Yeah it says .1

Lol

modern iris

I had the xeon not for long tho before I switched to Ryzen and then to Threadripper

potent arrow

Notice how the only thing that's holding up the GPU is a pcie slot cover...

So sometimes the GPU would fall over and crash the PC...

modern iris

Nah I always had a "good" case.

sharp star
potent arrow

Look the motherboard is actually secured

I printed the ATX standoff layout

And put standoffs into it

Only thing that isn't secured is the gpu

The PSU is riveted to the side panel

modern iris
potent arrow

No like the paper layout lol

#

So I knew where to screw them in

It will fit up to full atx

.... mostly

modern iris

My question would be what if you have a 4090 and a 3D printed case.
Would it melt?

Yes

golden stream

Yes

If considering the heat

modern iris
