EVGA claimed from the rampant 3090 failures it cost them a shit ton of money

royal forge
#

why would the 3090 be failing?

deep sapphire
#

And they claimed because nvidia withheld specs of the GPU they had issues with designing it I recall

royal forge
#

ye. i kinda don't get the logic behind nvidia's secretive-ness

deep sapphire
#

It was that Amazon MMO people kept having GPUs dying from idling the game in the menu

royal forge
#

i mean, yeah, leaks

#

but

#

ya know

deep sapphire
#

Kinda reminds me of Starcraft 2 when it first came out lmao

Canada has a lot of trouble attracting and retaining talent in a large variety of fields

And for a country that kind of prides itself on being so open and welcoming, it's actually RIDICULOUSLY hard to come here properly in any meaningfully short period of time even as a professional in your field Sadge

Going TO the states I was asked where I was going and the guy told me to have fun

Speaking of security theater, I need to remember to fill out my passport renewal this weekend

tranquil breach
odd sand
#

Don't have to unload my bag, shoes stay on, metal detector instead of backscatter etc. Get thru security in like 5mins bc its a separate line from the muggles haha

sly elk
#

even more crazy, the BEAR company that those things all came from still exists, I guess they were bought out a few times though xD

jaunty light
#

2 hr drive if I wanna do it, guess I could go in a couple weeks

#

oh wait @odd sand I forgot to notify like 2 other agencies that I am gonna leave OCONUS haha

#

at least there's still a month and a half to go so they won't be mad

odd sand
#

That's my only downside with a gov job is you need to file paperwork to go on vacation when you leave US territories

sly elk
#

yea I've heard things about canada's border patrol being kinda prickly before

#

like even if you have a speeding ticket or whatever

#

they'll get all harsh

odd sand
#

For where I'm going there is never a risk of them denying me, but its still a minor hassle

sly elk
#

i mean

odd sand
#

I think it's a tit for tat thing bc US was a dick first with the passport reqs

sly elk
#

unless you do something really stupid they'll approve it

jaunty light
#

I lost count of how many I have to deal with right now because i'm contract its 4 to 5 separate (but still within dod)

sly elk
#

my boss had an internship in russia

#

and I've known other people who made trips that were like wow

odd sand
#

gov contracts are x_X bc you can't get anyone to do shit that needs to be done bc govvie position

sly elk
#

the paperwork is irritating

jaunty light
#

current company, local DoD presence, maybe big DoD (east coast) in certain cases, plus local NCIS and the final is something I can't say

sly elk
#

I've been pissing off a program because

odd sand
#

You tell them to do something and they want like, written order from the CIO every goddamn time simply bc they dont want to do more work

sly elk
#

they keep me too busy doing stuff

#

so I don't have time to fill out paperwork

#

so I can't help them with other stuff

jaunty light
#

it's easy to get everything approved it's just fucking annoying because the last one is the one where it's shit like 2 months notification, brief debrief, tell us your life story, what is your itinerary front to back

#

"I see you were missing for 1 hour on october 15 at 10:00-11:00, what were you doing?"

odd sand
#

So we're trying to get the CIO to write a memorandum that says basically: I am empowering these contractors, do what they say

sly elk
#

LOL

jaunty light
#

on that note I think I'd never get approved to go to china which is a shame, not until I get out of dod

odd sand
#

Bc atm they want us to do 90% of their job for them and literally just hand them like a script that does it for them if they push a button

sly elk
odd sand
#

Currently we're dealing with them wanting to pay $1.5M extra per year for a parallel enterprise tool

sly elk
#

"actually I went to visit the coke guy my CISO told me about"

odd sand
#

And we're like bruh.... the tool we have here already silos everything, including your use-cases

#

"Yeah but... we wanna use this one" ... "you're going to be the only ones in the entire org using that and it will require doubling our dev budget to ingest those logs"

jaunty light
#

we are having the same thing ATM

sly elk
#

I enjoy those convos

jaunty light
#

people with 0 tech skills are making big money decisions at the top

#

"we bought this thing, now implement it"

sly elk
#

and then the forcing factor is their budget is way too small

#

to do what they want to do

odd sand
#

And implement it means turn it on with 5% of it configured, then they see the jingly keys for another multi-million dollar tool

jaunty light
#

yup

sly elk
#

it makes me feel like a bully when I remind people about their budget/schedule

odd sand
jaunty light
#

"use atlassian for ALL CI/CD across every org"

#

like uh, ok..

sly elk
#

enough that I had a "i hope i don't get fired" moment and then my boss who was hanging out in the meeting immediately backed me up lmao

jaunty light
#

atlassian's not for CI/CD but.. you know

odd sand
#

Jira... MiqoteDepressed

sly elk
#

jira configured all wrong MiqoteDepressed

#

I think half the reason I hate MS products is because of that same sorta thing

odd sand
#

I spent THREE YEARS trying to get them to clone the config for our Jira project so we could make bespoke issue types for our department. Would have taken like 5mins to copy the config and point it to the copy, then a couple weeks to brainstorm new issue types.

sly elk
#

me, using an MS product and complaining that it can't do this one particular workflow!
Internet: Well there's this one brilliant feature that does that!
me: ?! where?
Internet: It seems your IT department blocked that feature off because it's privileged

odd sand
#

Nope. Left there and we were still writing shit into comments that was for the issue fields

sly elk
#

Jira is the same kinda cancer

#

it has way way too many knobs and buttons for admins to silo everyone

odd sand
#

Jira is honestly not that bad, but much like Splunk it requires an admin and dedicated modding to your org

sly elk
#

so a disturbing amount of our work convos go something like "we'd love to do X!" "Well that's great but we can't do X because IT won't give anyone the permission, so you'll have to ask them to do it for you"

#

except

#

IT is undersized and way overloaded

#

and they have too many juniors who only know how to do windows helpdesk things

odd sand
#

Ah yes, the "security so secure, not even the org knows how it works"

sly elk
#

and then the interactions become like this

odd sand
#

That way when there is a breach, it takes you 10x longer to respond bc you dont know half the assets on the network

sly elk
#

ad I feel terrible for them

#

because I know some of my coworkers are rude pricks

odd sand
#

"We need these logs for this breach" .... govvie gets back to you 4 days later

sly elk
#

has nothing to do with the govvie

#

this is just internal silliness

jaunty light
#

we only do 15 minutes of real work a week, can't expect a good response time

sly elk
#

there's a dude here who gets upset when I complain about security stuff but I think it's a context thing lol

odd sand
#

Most of the time it comes down to, it's extra work and they're govvie so there is no consequences

sly elk
#

my take on it, is if you really want to make stuff exquisitely locked down and controlled, you need to have adequate staffing to support it when it's needed

odd sand
#

They can tell you to fuck off and their job will never be in jeopardy and you either never get what you need, or they can stall for weeks

sly elk
#

if your IT department works like "file a ticket and we'll get back to you in an hour/day/2-3 weeks"

jaunty light
#

ha, locking down on windows is easy

sly elk
#

then you've already lost the game

jaunty light
#

2 buttons and nothing works

sly elk
#

yea

#

that's why I hate windows

#

it like everyother MS product wasn't designed to be used

#

windows was designed to be managed

jaunty light
#

then you need to tell l1 helpdesk to unfuck applocker, whatever centrally managed endpoint protection, etc etc

odd sand
#

Atm security doesn't have privs to manage email

#

So when they get a phishing campaign or something they need to file a ticket to infra and they'll get to it ... eventually

sly elk
#

heheh

odd sand
#

That was one good thing about my last contract is we had privs for O365 SCC

#

So we'd get in in the morning and monitor email flow and at 8am they would always try to phish ppl and we would purge that shit with a vengeance immediately

jaunty light
#

hey at least you have teams that can do stuff our equivalent "security" team are people that look at securitycenter and @ you on teams with a plugin ID

#

thankfully, exchange is big navy's problem I don't want to touch that shit

odd sand
#

In some cases 5-10mins it would all be purged and blocked after being received

jaunty light
#

on the flip side, everything else is big navy's call, so suddenly it's "haha sucks to suck"

#

people: oh my god! teams is not working!
us: yeah that sucks doesn't it

odd sand
#

We had barracuda for awhile and it has its own issues, but one upside is they keep copies of all emails for like 2 weeks

#

Whereas on O365 if someone gets a phishing and deletes it immediately, you're SOL on checking headers and trying to contain other recipients

#

Bc for some stupid fucking reason, MS persists in enterprise mgmt involving logging into user mailboxes to check emails and headers etc.

#

It may not say its doing that anymore, but functionally on the backend its still doing that

jaunty light
#

it's amusing to check my junk folder because nothing's junk

#

but I also never get any non-external DoN emails

odd sand
#

I loved the users that would check their junk boxes then report stuff as spam/phishing MiqoteDepressed

jaunty light
#

whatever big navy has configured in their exchange even disregards their own CAs when we do SMTP

odd sand
#

That's actually the one stupid thing about O365: Stuff marked phishing I think is still just sent to junk unless you hard delete

#

Oh, your SMTP doesn't have their servers added for DKIM and SPF?

jaunty light
#

choose one: use a cheese grater on your sausage (trying to get the above approved) or deal with everything going to junk

sly elk
#

oh yea

#

yea don't click suspicious links in emails

#

great!

jaunty light
# sly elk

this but in dod we just add no-click.mil to a random part of the top level

sly elk
#

safelinks are the biggest piece of garbage

odd sand
#

Augh safelinks. You'd think they would make safelinks easier to read thru Outlook bc MS pipeline

#

All it does is make it impossible for the average user to decipher what the link is for, and safelinks isn't foolproof so...

jaunty light
#

it would be fun to look at all your configs to see how backwater we are but the tl;dr on us is that uh, we've got us, then big navy, then small navy approved shit, then east coast navy approved shit

#

basically trying to tie everything together is like trying to weld 5 different generations of aircraft together in hopes it flies

odd sand
#

Sounds like navy. My last contract was navy affiliated as well. Would always get like fleet cyber nagging us over idiot mac users getting themselves infected with malware from the Mac Fixer utilities or w/e

#

It was insane how many had a mac and would install shady utils for no reason

sly elk
#

i was pondering what the heck a mac fixer util was

#

and then I remembered haha

odd sand
#

This isn't 1985 anymore, you don't need weird 3rd party shit to keep your system running well

sly elk
#

there were a few

odd sand
#

Yeah they had variations on like Mac Fixer, Mac Cleaner, etc.

sly elk
#

yea!

odd sand
#

All of them had the same stupid malware installed in them that the name escapes me atm

sly elk
#

there was also one company that sounded like those that was always complaining that apple didn't know how to make secure software

jaunty light
#

they're trying to go in "the right" direction but you still have huge fragments everywhere

sly elk
#

yea it's pretty funny because if they took their own advice they wouldn't have had that o problem

#

"macs don't have viruses why would I install this bullshit?"

jaunty light
#

I'd rather just not use our own exchange though

odd sand
#

Which isn't entirely true, but still a lot better off than Windows on that front

jaunty light
#

have to run one*

sly elk
#

for sure shinon lol

odd sand
#

My biggest issue with MS is they change the domain/subdomain and names of their O365 tools every other month

jaunty light
#

I can see some cohesion in very high level services like O365 but not when you get down to our level, where it simply doesn't make sense to try and force big navy (global) on everything

odd sand
#

I remember the Quarantine box would rename and move around commands literally every week

#

Agile dev implemented into production every sprint

#

On an enterprise mgmt tool

jaunty light
#

we just need to get too big to fail

#

then you dont need to do any cybersecurity

odd sand
#

Well ranting is fun but its almost 3am I should sleep. I slacked off today, so I wanted to actually hack away at a new Splunk dashboard in the morning to make up for the time lol

jaunty light
#

what a nerd

odd sand
#

See if we can get infrastructure to actually do their goddamn job if I can provide a one-button report for patching

jaunty light
#

it's simple just send me your splunk configuration so I can shove it into our environment

odd sand
#

I hope you like rex fields and regex bc that's a lot of splunk lol

jaunty light
#

I can.. like.. do some regex at the absolute most elementary level..

odd sand
#

50% of splunk is just figuring out what your valuable data is, ingesting those logs, trimming them down to just the essential/useful fields.

jaunty light
#

lmfao

#

SNOW EVENT

odd sand
#

Other 50% is making the actual dashboards, correlation searches, datamodels, notable events, etc.

jaunty light
#

perfect we have servicenow we need this for reasons

#

I'd love to get all the time in the world to fuck with splunk here because they deadass set it up for a check in the box and it does nothing

#

the only time a "new functionality" gets added is when they have a vendor engineer out for 2 weeks

odd sand
#

Ah yes, servicenow. Still watching the vids for that stuff on Pluralsight etc.

#

Even if you don't have admin access, you should be able to do user-level field extraction

jaunty light
#

snow is another thing they won't use appropriately because they want to use it for HMRS but won't link it to AD. so it's useless

#

I can give myself admin it's my linux server

#

it's just getting pp slapped for wasting time on things not given to me

odd sand
#

What you do then is take some raw events into like Regex101 site and tease out the fields you want, then copy that into splunk and do a field extraction at the indexer level

#

I think sometimes you need to escape a few more things when going from regex101 to splunk but its not too bad

#

Just ends up looking like https:\////www.example.com// or something like that

jaunty light
#

it's probably not that bad if you have someone actually in it but it's currently just check in the box

#

it could do a lot of cool or useful shit

odd sand
#

Ah woops Discord got rid of some of the escapes lol

#

Splunk is insanely powerful, like holy shit run your entire org powerful

#

But yeah, you need to tool it for that

#

It's even used for real-time logging for Formula1 race cars

#

Like one of the upcoming use-cases is one dept has to log in and check that like 3 dozen things are all working properly everyday. We're going to make a script that logs into them and writes events to a KBstore recording they've been checking and operational etc.

#

Should save one of their operators 3hrs a day

jaunty light
#

my current button is orion (yes, the one you're thinking of) and I bet it could be done with splunk instead lol

#

but you know, money got spent, blah blah

odd sand
#

Yeah I think that was a tool that was down bc of the breaches and we tried to gently nudge them into deprecating it then bc we could cover the same use-case in Splunk

#

The funny thing is, I get it. You get a bunch of contractors that come in and say SPLUNK IS ALL THINGS TO ALL PEOPLE

#

And they roll their eyes and think you've just got tribalism or getting kickbacks or don't know what you're talking about, etc.

jaunty light
#

for what they bought Im sure it's coverable. I'm not sure what IPAM actually does but

#

but if you're telling me splunk can't do what NPM or NTA does, fuck outta here

odd sand
#

But at the point Splunk has all the logs and you want parallel logging into another tool... why?

jaunty light
#

then at virt manager level, you can easily tie into vsphere management/monitoring with it

#

i'm too dumb to figure out how you'd end up tying into the homebaked websites here but I'm sure someone could figure that out, again ,with splunk

#

since at most orion here will be like "oh my god! the server is at 56% CPU usage!"

jaunty light
#

haha tenable app is rated 2

#

and it's for .io only

odd sand
#

I forget what the difference is between the addon and the app

#

I think the addon manages the inputs and the app covers the actual data

#

Which is another project for me, their app doesn't do everything I need for a certain use-case, but thankfully you can clone the dashboard and extend it

jaunty light
#

SC is serviceable, but nessus manager is awful

#

whoever designed nessus manager and agents needs to be brought out back

#

I simply don't understand why I can't ask an agent to re-check in

#

nah just make a WHOLE new scan or wait until the next scan is scheduled

sly elk
#

neat

#

guess I now have an old gpu

odd sand
#

One of the nice things with Splunk is you can have it run scheduled searches and do scripted actions based on those periodic searches. As well as role-based access to actions on field data in splunk where an analyst doesn't need their own individual account to action on events

#

eg: You can pantag urls and IPs directly from splunk

#

Want to fuck this IP in particular? Click the dropdown and select pantag. It's gone.

jaunty light
#

I imagine overall our usage would be elementary but I could still think of a ton of useful things it could do that would save many hours

#

like atm we do have some operators doing checks for health, that could easily be replaced by some calls to sites, SMB shares, etc. ran on a schedule and tput in a dashboard

odd sand
#

Yep. Write a python script or something and write event output to a kbstore or whatever they call them now (think they just upgraded to something new)

#

You can do a lot with powershell as well, but it can be a pita at times and a lot of orgs lock down POSH for obvious reasons

#

Stand up a splunk container and run your own parallel tools haha

jaunty light
#

woah let's not get ahead of ourselves with python

#

I could probably still write some of it with a refresher but mostly use pwsh now

#

that said I do remember python being so simple

#

with pwsh I constantly run into some bullshit

#

POWERSHELL DIDN'T LIKE THIS STRING, MOTHERFUCKER

#

POWERSHELL THINKS YOUR OBJECT DUMB, MOTHERFUCKER

odd sand
#

Although with .Net Core its kinda crossplatform now

#

Not all modules are available in Core, but it's getting better.

#

Okay srsly really need sleep now playdead

jaunty light

rofl

oof strix rocking $400 prem

#

i imagine all the AIBs feel the same atm

#

"wow we can't design anything that looks decent, because the cooling team has to have a 5 slot piece of aluminum"

#

I would need to see the 4090 in person but it looks decidedly not premium compared to even the 3090

#

its cool they exposed the fins but at the same time that's probably more indication of cooling problems, that they had to forego the 3090 RGB bar there

#

tf brand

#

peladn

#

2 slot blower lmao..

#

high end PC parts, where you need to be rich and then use immersion cooling

sly elk
#

i got roasted for that with pyspark in the past

#

but the truth was

#

the tool I used pyspark for was really like one tiny piece of a much bigger puzzle

#

that got abandoned pretty hard lol

jaunty light
#

err, isnt a single 8pin like 150w?

sly elk
#

i like this dude's setup

jaunty light
sly elk

#

there's so muhc to look at lol

-looks at it- -shrugs-

#

i just bought a rm1000x!

and I'm not changing that shit again

#

and I don't think I'd ever want a 40 series

#

they're big and ugly and stupid!

jaunty light
#

also gamer chair

sly elk
#

i have both an ergo chair and a gamer chair

#

idk about those ones, those ones are too fucking expensive

#

they have some really sweet themed chairs

#

but they're like $650

jaunty light

@tame fulcrum updated driver, perf still ass

https://twitter.com/NotBrunoAgain/status/1575526675990958081 I like how PC Gamer suddenly became pro-crypto with a Sinophobic slant because China banned crypto

impressive to me how even PC gamer, a pub with a justified anti-crypto slant for reasons of "crypto dipshits made pc gaming hardware impossible to buy for two years", takes on a weirdly pro-crypto slant when the issue at hand is China

when does embargo on the 4090 drop anyway

hard drift
#

I think the day before release?

royal forge
#

oh

#

i'd have thought if they were so confident

#

they'd drop embargo earlier

hard drift
#

they can afford to do it whenever at this point, amd isn't releasing a single card until november

#

they have a chance to capitalize on highest end and since we're going into a recession hopefully amd will capitalize on the market changes with decently priced cards vs nvidia plus lower power draw 🙏

graceful pine
#

never really see amd cards

#

I have an AMD cpu of course

#

but just a Nvidia gpu

hard drift
#

i mean amd has a long way to go to gain market share for gpus, nvidia has had been the main go to for a lot of gamers and amd really messed up with rdna 1. rdna 2 was a ton better but nobody will give amd a true chance unless performance is on par and prices are that damn good vs the competition since they burned their reputation with drivers in rdna 1.

#

if amd doesn't capitalize on the chance they have right now, they probably won't have a better chance for a while again

graceful pine
#

they did get a strong ground in the cpu market

hard drift
#

yeah but with intels next move, if their claims are true, amd has to really make big moves with x3d coming q1 next year to try and 1 up them.

#

otherwise they pretty much lost this year, 7000 series is meh and 13th gen looks meh for the most part but their claims on min framerates and such will more than make up for their lack of huge gains without consuming a shit ton of power plus the platform is cheaper.

odd sand
# hard drift i mean amd has a long way to go to gain market share for gpus, nvidia has had be...

They need non-doctored benchmarks and reliable drivers. Their biggest issue is their benchmarks are always doctored to make them sound insanely good, but when you read the fine print there are a ton of caveats bc they aren't using industry standard terms, and cherry-picking games or referring to use-cases 99% of ppl don't have etc. Then of course the drivers being crap, so people feel like buying one is owning a Lada.

hard drift
#

To an extent, even when the drivers are good like with rdna2 people won’t give them a chance though

hard drift
odd sand
#

I know, but they're really bad about it.

#

This gen is no different. Their definitions for TDP and a few other terms are their own inventions and don't line up with standard usage

#

Which means when 3rd parties start doing benchs, you find out the results are way different than they appear from AMD's charts, which makes them look bad.

#

Bc then ppl don't want to trust any charts and figure they'll just stick to the safe choice: Nvidia.

hard drift
odd sand
#

How? Benchs I've seen they show both the stock and PL2 numbers

hard drift
#

Only recently

odd sand
#

Only thing they didn't bench was the "PL3" mode where it can hit like 350W or something

hard drift
#

They started showing with 12th gen

#

Hence the 270 max or whatever it is

I have a feeling if you drove that to any indie shop they'd also shake their heads lmao

deep sapphire
#

Ford continues to have problems with head gaskets because it uses an open deck cooling system and the contact surface is too narrow for the head gasket to make a proper seal

#

I’m convinced Ford has no clue how to make an engine, from the 5.3, the durashit V6s and pretty much every eco boost they all have terrible reliability

sly elk
#

yea it's too bad

#

they make the mustang and bronco, and on paper I thought their little euro fords were really cool

deep sapphire

odd sand

odd sand

Their system is 10 years old so I'm going to pre-emptively install a new drive assuming I can still read the old one. Mom texted me the other day saying it wouldn't boot, so I'm hoping it's just a bad cable or SATA port

I was gonna do what I did for my server: PCIe 2009 Quadro cards are displayport and $9

potent arrow

Hehe

#

I just have 1030 en mass

odd sand
#

The bigger issue is their LCD monitor is VGA, so I would need an adapter then lol

potent arrow

I ordered a bunch of Lenovo stations, and they came with 1030 but the business wanted to upgrade them

jaunty light

Cortana will no longer be included in the first boot experience or pinned to the Taskbar. based?

So I ended up with 20-30 1030s

I still havnt burned through them all : P

odd sand

What business needs more than a 1030 unless they were using them for like Adobe acceleration or something?

potent arrow

It was for their ERM software, hardware acceleration or something

sly elk
potent arrow

Just slightly more compute iirc

sly elk
#

idk how good their monitor is, but if it's vga you can probably get them something better for <$100

sly elk

"this is great!" -she uses it a lot-

odd sand
#

My parents spend most of their time on the tablets if they use the internet. THey only use the PC for church services when they don't feel like driving in person, or my dad will print shit from time to time and they don't use the wireless function much so he does it on the PC

God damn, you know the more I think about it

What are you going to do with hat little space

#

I wonder if it's like a single excel sheet that's 4-5gb that they want to protect or something

#

Or an sql database

jaunty light
#

god if it was a database that would be awful

#

like did they have NO alternative storage, anywhere? because just copying cold data to 16 sticks would be more reliable than trying to make a software raid with flash

potent arrow
#

Fuck knows

#

Honestly, there has to be a reason I'm missing

#

But I'm drawing blanks

#

Wonder if the system is still running, and how many cycles are on those sticks (if they are still alive lol)

jaunty light
#

I was surprised to find now there are some industrial or surveillance SD cards with respectable numbers, 200TBW

odd sand

My bet is on they had some ancient system they frankensteined that storage setup for with hardlinked files and they don't want to rewrite the scripts/software

I always wondered if people found things in the candy

jaunty light
#

gotta go out of your way to inject candy with drugs

#

doesn't this just stem from that time a guy tried to kill his kids with poisoned candy and said it was from trick or treating

sly elk
#

That’s fucked up

jaunty light
#

So the new AMD chips do not offer much of an improvement, right?

jaunty light

they are good chips but they're not efficient

royal forge
#

hard drift
#

hard drift
royal forge
#

Which is rumoured to beat the shit outta amd?

hard drift
royal forge
#

hard drift

they both generally suck for gains this time around

royal forge

But i dunoe if its feasible

jaunty light
#

miniature space heater

hard drift
#

like intel really didn't want to put a 4th bar, once amd releases 7000 series x3d it's a loss

jaunty light
#

if I upgrade it's only for an X3D proc. or I guess a 13900KS if it's still beating the x3ds overall

royal forge
#

If i decide to cough out a 4090, i dont think a SFF would cut it

jaunty light
#

but yeah seeing as the 13900 is only edging out the 5800 slightly RIP

hard drift
royal forge
#

I dont know if i can do a full size

deep sapphire
#

INTEL IS THE BEST

hard drift
#

they've have to pull some massive shit for 13900ks to overall beat an x3d
