You guys know them ?water blocks? for gpus?

#

They are for specific models right

jaunty light
#

yes and sometimes specific AIB

ie blocks for FE cards aren't guaranteed to work on a strix

cue that one linus video where they file the waterblock

royal forge
#

Do the water block manufacturers usually release multiple water blocks?

jaunty light
#

i don't follow anyone but EK but they usually do for popular models, FE, general reference board, then some specific ones like strix etc

I started a new character on my potato laptop. Currently, I am playing on the lowest settings, laptop(low) which would lead to a constant 22-23 fps and when on high its 16-18 fps and auto-resolution. Despite being playable on gridonia and on next map(near gridonia)I have yet to expedienced many players. The question is would my laptop fair on populated perhaps city and or instances/raids?

modest moss
#

what laptop is it? make/model

#

or do you know the cpu and graphics in it?

Anyone use Anker charger for charging Dualsense?

dull garnet
#

That's vague

#

Should be fine though, they can draw 1.5A apparently

modest moss
#

Anker make a bunch of different chargers

dull garnet
#

i got a dualsense from the gf for my birthday

#

sony don't even provide a charge cable

#

even nintendo isn't that stingy

modest moss
#

they want you to buy the charging dock probably

odd sand
odd sand
# meager cargo Anyone use Anker charger for charging Dualsense?

USB chargers negotiate the charge rate, so most of them should be fine. I've only heard of edge cases like the Nintendo Switch which has an obscure voltage, so I've heard of people running into issues where their chargers are all 12V or 18V but not all 18V chargers can negotiate to 15V

#

For something basic like a controller, I'm sure it's only drawing like 5V@1A or something

#

They only have a 250maH battery in them afaik

dull garnet
#

Switch is 5V and 15V

odd sand
#

Yeah so maybe what happened was the 18V chargers sometimes could only do 12V or 5V, so they were down-negotiating to 5V and the Switch was losing charge while plugged in.

#

I just remember people stressing to make sure any 3rd party charger you bought for the switch could actually do 15V

modest moss
#

there's a cap on the unit rate yeah

#

but until yesterday it was reviewed every 3 months and going up rapidly

#

from october it's going up like 25% more, but won't go higher than that for 2 years

#

it's gonna be £2500/yr

#

but that's not a smart way to say it

#

that's based on the imaginary average user family

#

that's outdated

#

because yesterday they announced the £2500 cap for 2 years

#

but before that it was touted that it'd be £7k by april

#

for context, I pay 29.23p/kWh PLUS a standing charge of 37.65p/day

#

that's for electricity

#

it'll go up by around 25%, from the £1971 cap to £2500 cap

#

gas is 7.34p/kWh and stand charge of 27.22p/day

#

yes

#

I'm poor so we're pretty careful about our usage, don't have the heating on unless we really need it etc

#

and from October we'll be paying at least 300 CAD per month

#

might be more, that's just a guesstimate

#

yeah my unit rate is gonna be 4x yours

#

Ice you use 3x as much electricity as me

dull garnet
#

That's the 3090 alone

modest moss
#

we used 355kwh last month

#

4 here, wife and two kids, 13+10

#

speedy how much electricity did you use last month?

#

yeah that's obscene

real edge
#

mining farm or sth lol

#

I do not use that much even in a year its crazy

modest moss
#

my provider estimates my annual usage is 4500kwh

#

so yeah you use 4x as much

#

probably even more gas

#

my current direct debit is £156/month for electricity and gas combined

#

gonna be £200+ from october

#

that's 700kwh per month

#

your ACs use 2x my whole electricity usage

#

surely it'd be cheaper long term to fit proper AC?

real edge
#

the ones above the gray are our current market prices for various providers

#

💀

#

the grey is what I currently pay because I locked in a contract before the crazy price jump

#

wtf

modest moss
#

yeah fully 4x my usage lol

odd sand
devout nexus
#

should let alberta build that pipeline 😛

#

would add 22 billiona year in profit

modest moss
#

I might be dumb, but the whole world should just build a fuckload of wind, solar and wave farms and never worry about fuel again

#

idk

odd sand
#

Holy fuck, that's the power bill for a townhouse? And it didn't even come with A/C?

modest moss
#

Ice, when it's hot, use this

#

when it's cold, put on a fucking sweater

odd sand
#

I kinda wish I only had a wall unit for A/C. My 1BDR here, it was like another $40/mo in A/C costs this summer

#

And that's with me setting it to 74/75. But its central air so you're always cooling the entire place

#

Weren't you shopping for multi-zone heat pump? Or are you renting?

#

For how many units?

#

They're full of shit.

#

I'd be curious what their itemized breakdown was

#

Bc there's no way the installation parts cost 200% of the base unit

#

I assume you tried shopping around for other quotes?

odd sand
#

Hmm... bah fuck it. I'll get myself a new PSU I guess.

#

Considering the prices on them are marked down so much atm, and I was going to spend like $50-60 on one for the gift PC. That's another $60 off in a roundabout way if I just pass over the 850W

#

I also planned another PC upgrade for 15th gen, so I would probably need more overhead for that anyways

#

Oh yay, more indecisiveness: That article about EVGA numbering schemes was written like 4 years ago. The prices he claims for P2 and T2 models line up with the current "sale prices" ... so it seems like instead of a sale, it's just the marked up prices coming down after ppl stopped buying them when the 30 series rush died

hard drift
odd sand
#

I'm sure there would be an adapter for the pins, but point taken.

#

Also right after I said I would buy it I then found that info that the prices are just coming down from markups so its not really a sale

modest moss
#

one benefit of giving the 850w with the gift, is seeing as it's a 9900k they should be able to upgrade the gpu later and get an extra few years out of it

odd sand
#

Wouldn't be able to fit it in this case though, I think. 180mm for the current one is already a tight fit. That one is 220mm

jaunty light
#

Thick

odd sand
#

Actually I take that back, it would probably work. the PSU shroud area is almost twice the length of the 180mm so it would probably be okay

#

But even if I maxed out the 13900K and got a 4080, I doubt it would need 1600 heh

jaunty light
#

Where da 14900k

hard drift
#

odd sand
#

Don't you need a 240V outlet for that then?

#

Over 15A circuit just for the PC haha

bitter girder
odd sand
#

Hmm... while it looks like my case can fit a 360mm radiator on top, the info says 240 only. Front mounting is janky imho. Wonder if I could get away with a 240mm only with the 13900k

dull garnet
#

yep, a lone 240mm fan

odd sand
#

Hmm... well if I did front-mount a 360mm, I wonder which is better, intake or exhaust for the top fans then

odd sand
#

Aesthetically, exhaust looks better bc the "front" of the fan is visible, but the GPU would probably be a little cooler if you did intake on top

royal forge
#

It is EXCEPTIONALLY stupid

it's a pain in the god damn ass to block domains and i'd rather have a single rule that catches everything

odd sand
#

Emails with no body content?

#

You can apply the same technique on the body instead of the subject. Dunno how it affects performance.

I use 2 different types of USB C anker cable too.
With this charger https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Charger-Durable-Compact-Included/dp/B099F558S1
and this charger https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Charger-Durable-Compact-Included/dp/B09C5SC9FW

This cable: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Powerline-Certified-Charging-MacBook/dp/B0971CKQ8H
And this one: https://www.ankerjapan.com/products/a8033

All of them won't charge Dualsense. But can charge Nintendo Switch with no problem. Furthermore, both of those cables won't charge Dualsense when plugged into PS5 either

umbral moss
#

I wonder if the negotiation chip on your controller is kaput so it needs the dumb A/C cable to bypass it

#

seeing how J1772 works for EV charging it's like, why doesn't every cable have a sense pin for that?

#

"hi, I have +15V on pin 5, you can supply 250W to me"

meager cargo
umbral moss
#

I mean, you could try a cable you know is designed to transfer power and data and see if it works

#

I accidentally bought a data-only USB C cable because apparently that's a thing and my headphones won't work with it because it needs power and data

meager cargo
#

I always use Anker since I know about em and got no problems till now

umbral moss
#

yeah, I wouldn't suspect anker is bad

#

if the cable works for charging other devices it might be your controller

#

I had a problem where my anker wall wart and C-C cable stopped charging my phone, but when I unplugged it and let it cool down for a few hours it started working again

outer sand
#

I bought Micro USB that use steel cable long time ago

#

still work to this day, I use it everyday to charge my MP3 player

#

I don't think It has a brand at all

meager cargo
umbral moss
#

USB A doesn't have any logic behind it

#

you get 5W because that's what the connector supplies, it doesn't communicate with the battery management module

#

USB C has a lot of data going back and forth because the charging spec can supply anywhere from 5 to 250W

meager cargo
#

I see

umbral moss
#

so the cable, source, and sink all need to agree on what power can be distributed without blowing up the cable or sink

meager cargo
#

Might just gonna wait for a reply from Anker Support

umbral moss
#

yeah, they would know better than I do

#

USB-C's frustratingly byzantine specs and rolling compliance for cables, sources, and sinks is so annoying to navigate

#

if you want to understand what your device needs you have to go through like six charts and make sure they all agree with each other before you buy a cable or charger

#

oh, you want USB C 3.1 2x2 gen 3? hope you know what any of that shit means

#

because that isn't necessarily the More Gooder version of the spec or cable

meager cargo
#

Yeah, I watched that too in YT. So I wonder why some countries would like to push for USB C as the general use when some have show that it’s not as universal as they think it is

umbral moss
#

the problem is that you need a spec to lean against and USB C's connector is fine

#

the next problem is that there's subsets of USB C that are almost legacy compliance more than anything else

hard drift
#

so you're saying amd is going to win? 🤔

modest moss
#

I'm referring to you trying to cope with the defeat by clinging to the socket

hard drift
#

i mean technically amd beat intel already with the x3d only for gaming but since x3d products aren't coming until supposedly next year, they'll likely lose until they are out

#

and not even a 13900ks will save intel because x3d will just be that much better thermally/budget wise

odd sand
#

Depends on which AMD you're talking about. Their server platforms twice had sockets that lasted only like 1 gen didn't they?

hard drift
#

that's servers which 99% of us in here don't use namazuconcern

modest moss
#

anyway who gives a fuck about a socket lasting forever

hard drift
modest moss
#

you're not going to buy a brand new 5000 series cpu and stick it on a board that only has pcie 2.0

#

look at me, my 5800x3d fits on my 2016 mobo, yay

#

big deal

hard drift
#

i mean it gives massive gains in performance without having to buy a bunch of new shit to upgrade

modest moss
#

if you're trying to save a buck you're skipping several generations anyway

hard drift
#

exactly why being able to go from 7000 to say 10000 series will be nice

#

or whatever it may be

#

same way for going from 1700x -> 5800x3d or 5000 series in general

modest moss
#

plus only half the am4 boards can support zen 3 afaik, only as far back as b450

#

so it's really not as great as shills like you make out

odd sand
#

I think it's a novel feature, but not one the majority of people care about enough. Because the ones strapped on cash enough to utilize it won't be upgrading a CPU after only 2-3 years

modest moss
#

right

#

it's a gimmick for nerds like bidori

#

like I'll try to get at least 4 years out of this 12700k

odd sand
#

And if you're going 5-6 years then yeah, you're way behind on motherboard features. Like 2.5gbe pcie5. wifi6, etc. Some boards even coming with onboard 10gbe

modest moss
#

in 2026 I don't want to buy a cpu and drop it on a 2022 board

odd sand
#

Without a doubt any CPU these days you can get 4 years out of. Apps aren't pushing hardware that heavily on the consumer front

modest moss
#

yeah, potentially upgrade the gpu in a few years and get a few more years after that

hard drift
# modest moss it's a gimmick for nerds like bidori

not true, you could do 5000 series on older boards such as a320 but some of the 300 series support came way later which is how it is for budget anyways, they're waiting for release of budget options 🤷‍♂️

modest moss
#

only on asus and gigabyte, no?

hard drift
#

no

modest moss
#

On 12 November 2021, according to TechPowerUp, ASUS and Gigabyte are the few vendors that allowed Ryzen 5000 on A320 motherboard and according to Tom's Hardware it was done by removing support for AMDs 7th Generation A-series and Athlon X4 series (Bristol Ridge) processors.

#

that's what wiki says

Intel changing the name of their 10nm process to 7 to align with AMD calling theirs 7 when it wasn't.

#

Intel plans to begin an entirely new era in the first half of 2024: The angstrom era. These chips represent the point where some physical features can no longer be accurately measured in nanometers, or billionths of a meter. Instead, these features will now be measured in angstroms, or one ten-billionth of a meter. The first angstrom-class process from Intel will come as 20A (A is for angstrom), which brings RibbonFET, Intel's first gate-all-around (GAA) transistor, and PowerVia, a novel approach to delivering power to incredibly small transistors.

#

Angstrom sounds cool and pretentious at the same time

#

I think with HDDs on a NAS i'd only need 1G for write saturation and maybe 2.5G for read

#

or slightly more idk. 7200rpm drives probably only hit what 150

umbral moss
#

150 MB/s, yeah

#

even with a large onboard cache

#

it's funny that when 7200 rpm drives first came out everyone was like "wow, it gets 130MB/s, so fast" and now we're bitching about SSDs being fractions of a percent away from each other at 7.5GB/s

jaunty light

#

I mean, you can buy VPP655s and never worry about pressure/tubing length lmao

#

they last forever and they're fairly cheap

#

I've been running 2x VPP655 in series since 2013 with no issues

#

I have the non PWM version so there's a manual speed controller on the body

#

🤔

#

I also painted the mounting brace for the pump with plastidip so it's got some mild anti-vibration dampening

hard drift
#

it is

#

that's the whole point of the new connector smh

#

it handles all of that better

#

the news was about converters

#

not the native plug

#

going from 2x8 -> 12vhpwr or 3x8-> 12vhpwr was not within specs and would risk overcurrent

#

yes

#

it's one of the first available ones

#

that's the point of the new connector, it handles the spikes a lot better so you don't trip it

#

the connector itself is like 600w and then the extra port is to better control power so that you can run say a 4090 with a lower spec'd psu

#

i mean a 4090 + 7700x would work pretty well

#

🤨

#

if you want a 12100f might as well get the new T parts

#

why're you looking at a 7700k???

#

lmao

#

plus the new intel T parts might be really good for gamers, 35w and supposedly is on par with a 12900k except in multi core

#

if it actually stays 35w, that'll be the way to go

#

12900k was never really a gamer cpu anyways lol

#

huh wait am5 doesn't have PCIE 5.0 support?

paper tusk
#

yes but depends on chipset because logic

#

"AMD's requirements only enforce PCIe 5.0 on the X670E boards, which means PCIe 4.0 will be applicable to lower cost motherboards."

#

so will get it for m2 ssd (well one m2 slot) but pcie 5 for graphics is limited to money pit boards

ugh thats dumb

paper tusk
#

yeah would be hardcore dependent on good use of available lanes (and resisting the urge to mux pcie 3/sata and call it a day instead of use a controller to free up some lanes for wifi)

#

same with going for 10gb ethernet on the remaining chipset lanes

#

I doubt that will happen

#

probably going to wait for next intel socket (gen 14) and upgrade to that
