Hi. Has anyone here experienced 401 or i2501 errors from the square enix online store before? I wanted to see if anyone here has experience talking to support on the phone.

According to the Journal, Apple and Facebook were considering a a subscription service that would offer an ad-free version of the platform. And since Apple takes a cut of in-app purchases, including subscriptions, it could have been a very lucrative arrangement indeed.

peak performance

royal forge
#

My friend cant understand why our clunker of a dell is lagging and slow while he has 15 chrome tabs open

dull garnet
#

did you suggest downloading more ram

umbral moss
#

I can't even use my desktop at work because the one in my cube has 4GB of RAM

#

my phone has more RAM than that piece of shit

#

it's legitimately a 20 minute exercise to get to the desktop when I unlock it

dull garnet
#

my phone and tablet both have 8gb nanawhoa

umbral moss
#

imagine having a 300W desktop with lower performance than a cell phone from 2016

dull garnet
#

the power of arm

umbral moss
#

I think this installation of windows is just shot, 4GB was standard when this PC was new

#

I remember having a problem a year or two back where windows was storing every fucking update cab file on the hard drive instead of purging them after installing an update

dull garnet
#

4gb should be alright, i suppose it has a hdd? windows kinda took a dump on hdd performance about a year ago

umbral moss
#

so the drive would have 0% free after a while, and it was all just trash cab files from waud

#

the real problem is that it's fucking windows 7 and doesn't meet our network security requirements

#

but the company is too cheap to buy a modernized replacement that does

#

so here it sits, a nice EOL product that hasn't gotten an update in like 6 years exposed to the internet

dull garnet
#

oh wow

royal forge
#

But

#

Its hard to demonstrate when task manager is locked behind an admin password

umbral moss
#

I complained about the fact it takes almost an hour to update my weekly work log in excel for six months straight

an excel sheet that has literally no calculations in it, just some cells with color fill so I can track what got worked on when

inland mauve
#

what the FUCK is your IT doing

#

WHY is there still a Windows 7 machine in your domain

umbral moss
#

because the company is extraordinarily cheap lmao

#

why spend $1500 when you can, you know, not

inland mauve
#

do they have locks on their doors?

umbral moss
#

also, there is no dedicated IT team, it's literally one guy who's also in charge of inventory

inland mauve
#

an alarm system in the office?

#

why even bother with any of those, they only cost money after all

umbral moss
inland mauve
#

you're going to get hacked sooner or later and it's going to be in a profoundly stupid way that didn't even require anything advanced

umbral moss
#

I mean, they force upgraded all the w10 machines to 11 because of the printspool exploit lmao

#

and then there's these windows 7 machines still languishing in active service

inland mauve
#

which, let me guess, still have the PrintNightmare vulnerability?

umbral moss
#

likely

inland mauve
#

did you guys take any actions against DogWalk? that's the newest high profile zero day

umbral moss
#

it's not like MS fixed it

#

win7 stopped getting updates in what, 2017?

inland mauve
#

in 2020

umbral moss
#

yeah, but they're airgapped

#

this is a live machine in active service pogianger

inland mauve
#

you can run an old OS fine if you take the necessary precautions

#

airgapping is the best one

#

at the very least you should have it in a separate network that is isolated from everything else

#

especially the internet

umbral moss
#

it's usually some HMI device, yeah

#

since those things are a huge pain in the ass to retrofit

#

I was at a customer site in june where they had recently spent $30k to upgrade the PCs on their laser cutters to win7

#

which is the furthest forward the vendor was able to upgrade the hardware to

#

they used to be winXP machines playdead

dull garnet
#

Have to use a patch to enable its use unless you pay up for extended updates

#

Sounds about right

umbral moss
#

people are already pulling their rigs offline because of the merge

#

there's a big wave of "gently used" 3080s coming to the market

dull garnet
#

could buy a superior 3060 ti for that

#

not bad

#

2080 ti is stronger

modest moss
#

I'll pass on used tech

dull garnet
#

i was looking at FE 980 Ti the other week for no reason at all

modest moss
#

I'd buy like a used mobo for an older pc though because it's impossible to get new sometimes

sharp star
dull garnet
#

for the money yes

#

but really you need to spend about $1000 to get a truly good monitor

umbral moss
#

is it better than the XB271?

#

the XB271 is usually $499 and can be had at $399 sometimes without black friday deals

umbral moss
#

4k/144 is the only thing that's in that price bracket

dull garnet
#

no i just know what i'm talking about

#

also find me an apple monitor for 1000 or less

umbral moss
#

or is this like, "I only use studio reference monitors"

dull garnet
#

anything that actually has 1000 nits of brightness for one

sharp star
#

I have an XB271HU but I swapped it out for a Gigabyte M27Q

dull garnet
#

these $300 do 400 tops

sharp star
#

It's similar

umbral moss
#

for all zero times I leave my monitor at full fuckbright mode anyway

sharp star
#

G-Sync modules really mean jack shit unless you want VRR from 1-whatever Hz

dull garnet
#

this dell only does 48~165 kek

#

its okay

umbral moss
#

I'm not even saturating 1440/144 with my setup so why kill myself for a 1440/165

#

or 4k/144

dull garnet
#

does anyone really saturate their hw often. not saying these lower end monitors are bad but you get what you pay for

umbral moss
#

I mean, I prioritize color gamut over refresh rate but it's nice to have the lower frame time in the absence of based CRT response times

#

brightness is one of the things I value least since I don't run them at full backlight anyway

dull garnet
#

i don't think anyone does besides in hdr scenarios. i can't say i really see the benefits of hdr going by my tv

umbral moss

yeah

HDR is like 3d monitor tech

#

is this deal even all that great?

basically, am I correct in thinking a 105 wattage 3070 TI (I believe standard is 150W) isn't significantly better than my current 3070 (no ti) laptop?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/195076920916?mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&campid=5337259887&toolid=10001&customid=509790201cc011ed8d729a5345c674ba0INT

modest moss
#

yeah it's not worth 'upgrading' from 3070 to 3070ti

frank sierra
modest moss
#

probably ok

#

but I wouldn't personally want to go 4k with a 3070ti anyway

frank sierra
#

how is 60 hz for gaming these days

modest moss
#

3070ti isn't really powerful enough for 4k gaming

#

it's great at 1440p

frank sierra
modest moss
#

what's the rest of your 3070 setup?

#

3080 minimum imo

dull garnet
#

hey you could play fortnite and also other 5+ year old games at 4k on a 3070 ti!

frank sierra
# modest moss what's the rest of your 3070 setup?

dull garnet
#

cooling

modest moss
#

yeah I wouldn't upgrade to that, it's not a ton better

frank sierra
#

versus 105W for the ti

modest moss
#

save your money

#

see what happens with the 4000 series nvidias

umbral moss
#

$2500 4080

#

$5000 4090

dull garnet
#

$9000 4090 Ti - Icehunter edition

umbral moss
#

yeah

#

the icehunter model will be $12000 for the titan

#

the 20 series was priced with the 2080 occupying the titan slot from the 10 series

#

because they had a shitload of extra 10 series cards from the first great crypto crash

#

more that nvidia doesn't reset price brackets every generation

#

they have a ton of used 30 series cards hitting the market so they have 0% interest in releasing new cards that compete with them in price

#

so it'll be 3090 prices for the 4080 series

#

all the POW copium going around saying they'll fork eth and stick with POW rigs

#

like anyone will use those chains

#

expensive and totally unnecessary pogianger

#

yeah, why wouldn't nvidia price the titan right below the tesla product

#

they don't want people to buy the cheaper prosumer stuff at a huge discount compared to the enterprise/scientific product

#

that's why they brought the titan price from $800 to $1300 with the titan xp-2

boreal surge
#

Yeah ijk notation for loops is archaic stuff

#

And also not descriptive.

#

Well the first thing that comes to mind looking at that is does react not have range/iterator based for loops?

#

🤦‍♂️

#

Noted

#

*facepalm was for the engineer who did not know what his loop did

sly elk
#

in python i'm not in love with range loops

because you can't fuck with the increment of your iterator lol

#

and yea javascript has foreach iirc

#

often the shortcuts make things harder to read

#

glares at list comprehensions

boreal surge
#

That’s a good explanation. It’s just that so far I’ve seen that for each(or variants of) is the hotness in Hack/C++

#

Iirc it was single threaded no?

#

You can tell I’m basically a C++ dev who’s never been forced to look at perf haha

#

But what you’re describing sounds like the fork join model of multithreading, except hidden under the guise of being async

#

But also haven’t touched actual thread management since, other C++ hotness is coroutines go brrr. Which is async and I haven’t bothered looking into the actual implementation

sly elk
#

brrrr

boreal surge
#

I have a coworker exploring C++ now, right now her main gotchas are the typing and the bad documentation for not STL things.

#

And style.

sly elk
#

my favorite thing about C++ is that it doesn't matter if you just started using it yesterday, or you've been using it for 5 years: You're an idiot that doesn't know how half of it works 😄

boreal surge
#

Another thing about C++ performance: unless you’re hyperoptimizing it’s basically fuck it compiler will do it’s thing haha

#

Well we got std::shared_ptr and std::unique_ptr now tho

#

Still does nothing for threading synchronization haha

And it wasn't even someone from that dept or from an upper manager making that call even, it was someone in a tangentially related dept that for some reason was given purview over that sort of thing

#

It's the same mentality behind my HS cancelling a C++ class bc "They might learn how to hack the network"

sly elk
#

yea, like, to be totally fair

#

you can be stupidly thorough with security and monitoring and not impede programmers' workflow

#

if you have people who are programmers AND security experts in charge of the security stuff

#

but those people are expensive AF, hard to come by, and it still takes longer to do things "the right way"

#

and the reason these security people earn a bad rep is they're brought into a small company that was "moving fast and breaking things" and give the devs the same policy they give the glue eaters that poke at their computer all day trying to install that'free music streaming' crap on their work computer and use it to browse porn and shit

#

and even then there's limitations

I think you guys missed the point of this comic?

#

it's not about locking down every access possible, it's about not putting proper procedures in place to make sure that people can quickly get the permissions they need

#

it's a part of corporate IT that everyone, including IT, often forgets about because next to the technical implementation of making such requests it also has major procedural and organizational aspects to it

sly elk
#

depending on the person and stuff, the fact they had to ask for it in the first place means it wasn't well done

inland mauve
#

that's wrong

sly elk
#

it reeks of

#

"we just rolled out a new security policy!"

#

-entire software team gets blocked-

inland mauve
#

you cannot possibly expect IT to know exactly which types of access every person in a big company needs

#

you can do a lot of ground work to minimize the pain

sly elk

but why bother?

inland mauve

but you're always going to miss something somewhere

sly elk

#

Having an automated process for making sure ppl can get access quickly also takes time and money to implement and we all know companies hate spending on IT most of the time

inland mauve
#

why bother with a firewall? it just gets in the way of rolling out third party products that need access to their cloud

Gamers...

inland mauve
#

to use less energy per hash?

odd sand
#

Yes bc at the end of the day, electricity is the largest expense in a mining operation

#

That's the biggest reason so many folded up and sold their cards recently: It costs more power than the value of the token in a lot of places atm

inland mauve
#

I knew the price of energy is the deciding factor

#

but I didn't think about how it would be more efficient to run your mining rig at half its full capacity

#

if you think about it like that, even though they're running 24/7 they're at least doing so in a life extending mode

#

like how you can configure your laptop to treat its battery in a way that doesn't optimize its charge time but does increase its overall lifespan before it dies

umbral moss

there is talk of this "green" screen effect at times, and I must admit I think I see it when using the settings menu in dark mode sometimes, manifests as a slight flicker that doesn't look quite right. but this may have been ironed out as production has continued and my case seems nowhere near as bad as what i've seen from other people on the web

the task switcher often gets slightly bugged. that one is minor but it is something i wish they would fix

aside from that no real issues with it, camera is pretty good and the ai is fun. i feel like you may be able to do better for the money but you'd probably be making a few compromises

suggest you get the official pixel charger or a third party equivalent so you can take advantage of the fast charging the provided usb-c -> usb-c cable that is provided with the phone, it doesn't have a power adapter in the box. it also isn't provided with a usb-c to 3.5mm adapter although amazon sells these for a fiver. likely worth investing in a decent case too. i have the spigen tough armour on mine in addition to a glass screen protector

the only cool thing about it is that it has a performance mode

you can turn on the electric motor for maximum torque instead of economy and knock a full second off your 0-60

#

speed is in direct opposition of safety lmao

#

especially sudden bursts of it

#

turn on performance mode and just plow into the car in front of you in stop and go traffic

odd sand
#

Because of the Gen1 defects the 360 never turned a profit

#

They had a several billion dollar writedown fixing or replacing them all

umbral moss
#

not exactly, just that sony's recipe is to do exactly that and they've been very successful with that strategy

#

it started with the PS2 having a DVD player in it, and the memery of FIVE HUNDRED AND NINTY NINE DOLLARS made sure blu-ray got to as many households as possible

#

nintendo doesn't normally sell consoles at a loss, which is why they tend to be lower powered

odd sand
#

That's not really the case anymore. Neither the PS5 nor the Series X/S are sold at a loss

#

The bill of sale for the PS5 was like $440 or something

umbral moss
#

you don't need to lose money on consoles unless you're doing something very specific that will net you big gains down the road

#

sony being the major sponsor of blu-ray, for example

odd sand
#

It's because using it as a loss-leader didn't make them profit. Neither Sony nor MS turned a profit on the 360/PS3 era bc they took too many losses on the hardware

umbral moss
#

for like three years lmao

#

the fact that the PS3 needed blue laser diodes is why there's so many fuckin super bright blue LEDs now

odd sand
#

Bluray player pricing was just bullshit is why. When DVD released, they cost what? $300 or so?

#

People were buying a PS2 as a DVD player and that was like $249 or 299 was it?

umbral moss
#

like, I remember seeing a breakdown of the PS3's BOM and the blu-ray diode was like $120-130

#

it was a huge part of why the thing was so expensive

sharp star
#

they also shoved an entire PS2 into the PS3

odd sand
#

Well they ramped production quick then bc I was given a free BD player when I bought my 1080p TV in like 2008/9 and I think the cost of that player was only like $50-70 as it is

#

Yeah the 360 had a ton of model iterations

#

I think the original 360 was on 180nm and the final was 65nm...

umbral moss
#

Dodge says it’s trying to address this gap through the introduction of new features, like the eRupt electro-mechanical shifting. This feature “delivers distinctive shift points, throwing shoulders into seatbacks in true Dodge style,” the company said.

I remember when anandtech got blacklisted for a while because one of their banner ad partners didn't vet what they were broadcasting well enough and the partner used the banner ad to transmit a zero-day java exploit

pornhub is likely worse than any of the older sites, because they make money off ads and subscriptions

https://youtu.be/Dq-VTGrfXrE?t=664 oh yeah DF took a look at it in Spider-Man

Marvel's Spider-Man is perhaps one or two patches away from PC perfection, but already the game has super scalability for Steam Deck. So what's the best, consistent gaming experience we were able to achieve? How do optimised settings evolve for a mobile platform? And if the game runs so well on Deck with overhead to spare, how does the title per...

How can I tell if a case fan works as an exhaust fan or not

Inversely how do I know it's an intake fan

Fans are fans, there aren't really any designed for intake or exhaust only.

going back a few years it wasn't unusual to have my screens full of windows. One monitor full of the user interfaces to talk to an embedded system, a couple terminal windows open on said system, with log messages scrolling by and possibly a hexdump of packets. A few code windows, a page or two of reference material perhaps. chat message window.

#

(and as silly as having a hexdump of packets going by sounds, there are times where you're looking for a change in the pattern - like messages getting dropped or whatever, so it can be legit)

a good debug session can really look like you're hacking the matrix lol
