#

Hi I have a pretty old imac and im checking if they fixed iris gpu issue i was looking online and no one was talking about it and if its still here is there a way to fix it or not

pale forge
#

well

umbral moss
#

I mean, yea, this is inevitable since you're in the digital domain, so trash cables with bad rolloff will just drop pixel info outright

#

HDMI is prone to this shit too

umbral moss
#

charge your EV when you're not using your PC pogianger

dull garnet
#

yes

#

wonder if doing that cuts power draw

#

or at least lowers it

potent arrow
#

Hmm?

#

That's all you need

modest moss
#

what's wrong with that?

potent arrow
#

Literally all you need

#

Ice people arnt like you and have a million peripheral devices

#

Huh?

modest moss
#

what

dull garnet
#

yeah, what

modest moss
#

power those off usb?

#

4x sata which you can easily run 2 each off, or more

potent arrow
#

I mean like DDC, ssds, HDDs, etc

#

Those are internal peripherals

dull garnet
#

bro

#

what

potent arrow
#

That's more then enough on a psu

#

Lol speed you good

dull garnet
#

i'm not sure

modest moss
#

I'm going to say nothing

potent arrow
#

Yeah.

#

I should fix my leaky laptop

#

Well, my new one is coming soon

#

I should just kill the old one

#

Shot gun it

modest moss
#

why is a laptop leaking

potent arrow
#

Uh

modest moss
#

laptops should not leak

potent arrow
#

Idk I've had many fluid incidents

dull garnet
#

pee

potent arrow
#

It's probably hydrualic oil

modest moss
#

so it's external spillage rather than some dumb watercooled laptop

potent arrow
#

Most likely hydrualic oil tbh

dull garnet
#

wonder how win 11 would be on a first gen i5 laptop

modest moss
#

I swear, every regular in here is a proper fucking technological misfit

#

myself included

dull garnet
#

gotta clear out my old laptops

potent arrow
#

It might also be like

#

Heavy metal fluid lol

#

Like super contaminated waste water

modest moss
#

you should probably deal with it

potent arrow
#

Because I was helping my dad on site

#

It's sitting on a towel right now lol

#

I'll be getting a new laptop soon so I'm not really bothering

modest moss
#

crack it open and clean it

potent arrow
#

Who would win me or my devices.

modest moss
#

double ko

dull garnet
#

i have a win 95 machine duckling

#

romz?

#

cool

modest moss
#

just get a dedicated work machine, then do whatever on the gaming rig

dull garnet
#

that would mean buying another 3090!

modest moss
#

he doesn't need a 3090 to code

dull garnet
#

from what i have read he needs a 3090 for job stuff

modest moss
#

are you self employed or something?

#

just wondering why MS don't supply hardware

#

eh just use their hardware and bill them for the time it takes

dull garnet
#

how are you getting any work done with the current machine situation lol

#

is that in productivity or games

modest moss
#

I'm looking forward to the new issues with the MSI board

dull garnet
#

from what i saw it should be <1% in games

sly elk
#

yjsy

#

that's a kinda dinky looking psu

#

maybe the person that mkes the firmware is the same potted plant dude

potent arrow

@sly elk tplink ftw :3

dull garnet
#

i doubt that

modest moss
#

weird shit happens with pending and online banking, would just ignore it and see what gets delivered, then check your bank on monday and it'll probably have been charged and you can complain to get priority refunded

#

sometimes people ship without the GPU in

#

so I'd def check that

#

I'd expect they'll give instructions

potent arrow
#

For prebuilts I always recommend at the minimum, take out the gpu and ram. Then reseat it yourself

#

Reseat connectors on any SSD/HDD

#

And reseat the Mobo PSU cable and CPU PSU cable on the main board

#

Those tend to get loosy goosy during shipment or if a tech misses it

#

@hardy sparrow

#

Yep

#

That's standard with any conputers

#

If you plug into the motherboard you won't be using the GPU for monitor out

#

And if you have AMD, you won't have output at all

#

(yes I know APUs a thing shush)

modest moss
potent arrow
#

well still the same, you dont wanna game on an intel igpu when you have a nice 3080 lmfao

modest moss

yeah, will suggest she uses dp over hdmi too

#

so, snagged an old 128GB M.2 ssd from an old laptop at work like, 6+ months ago
and only just got around to plugging it in
its barely been used, like ever, im very confused
too bad its only a 128gb,

#

well a ssd is an ssd, and my motherboard had a free slot 😄

#

only reason i would have been able to take it, is it came from a decommissioned laptop, so either, it was replaced on warranty then basically never used (may have been a spare they had lying around for ages)

#

or the firmware is fucked and reporting wrong data, which is possible

#

since the temp sensor is stuck at 50 C constantly

dull garnet
#

are you sure it isn't just running at 50c

umbral moss
#

I mean, also consider it might be both since it came out of a shitty laptop

those boxes aren't empty?

Saffron for tech mentor

umbral moss

oh, yeah, I would leave the GPU un mounted if I was shipping a PC to someone

that's a good way to have your shit arrive broken

dull garnet

umbral moss

potent arrow

they put an matx board in an atx case

umbral moss

it's not aesthetic with that secondary compartment for the PSU

potent arrow
#

I'm sooo tired lmfao

modest moss
#

They should have extended the mesh over the whole front

potent arrow
modest moss
umbral moss
#

it's just the weird shape and proportions

potent arrow
#

It's mostly the fact that the o11/mini is meant for water-cooling or aio

modest moss
#

But at the end of the day a pc should be hidden so who cares

potent arrow
#

And this has that..thing

#

Which is very small

#

With aio or water-cooling it'll fill the case out more

modest moss
#

That cooler will be fine it's only a 12600k

dull garnet
#

normalise air cooling again

#

😔

potent arrow
modest moss
#

Saffron is the biggest chad in tech, came in here and planned and ordered a build within like 2hrs

potent arrow

I have an o11 mini or two, but it's reserved for water cooling builds or builds with more then 3 ssds

umbral moss
modest moss
#

None of the usual procrastination for a week

deep sapphire

umbral moss

transformers are also allowed to run at above-boiling temperatures since they're oil cooled

#

and they don't fuck off and release the magic smoke when they get hot

dull garnet
#

that's for flashback

modest moss
#

Probably for flash. ..yeah

#

You can ignore it

#

Yes

deep sapphire
#

Transformers can be air or oil cooled

umbral moss
#

yeah, you only need to use that slot specifically if you want to update bios

potent arrow
#

umbral moss
dull garnet
#

dual displayport pog

umbral moss
#

not gonna find a 14kV 3p transformer with a 120mm fan on it

deep sapphire
#

Yeah but you said 1200w can’t be air cooled

potent arrow
#

This is what I mean by weird OEM boards

umbral moss
#

if you don't give a shit about the surface temps sure, you can air cool it

deep sapphire
#

Pretty sure plenty of 1200w PSUs exist that are air cooled

dull garnet
#

i think he meant the components

#

upcoming 600w cpus or whatever

umbral moss
#

it's the CPU and GPU where temps actually matter

#

although you can smoke a 1200W PSU if you let the mosfets hit 95C too

deep sapphire
#

I ran a dual 580 setup with a 990X under air and it held up fine was pulling about 900 from the wall at times

umbral moss
#

I had a 480 on air and it was running 75C idle

deep sapphire
#

Mosfets are designed to run that hot

umbral moss
#

air cooling stops being efficient after a point

deep sapphire
#

They’re all passively cooled on motherboards and regularly run that hot

umbral moss
#

75C is fine for components that don't have thermal noise sensitivity, CPUs/GPUs do

#

especially with OCs

#

for purely passive components (like transformers), it doesn't matter because you don't care that the surface temp is 250C

#

as long as it doesn't melt it's gucci

#

run a CPU at 250C and you're in for a bad time

deep sapphire
#

I just looked it up they have a thermal ceiling of up to 180c

umbral moss
#

silicon does

#

but that's also crushingly close to the melting point of silicon

sly walrus
#

then curve it more

umbral moss
#

the original premise was "why can't you air cool 1200W" and the problem is a function of surface area, I can dissipate 1200W over 65 square meters no problem

deep sapphire
#

Okay but mosfets in consumer electronics regularly get to upwards of 100c

umbral moss
#

it's not ideal to run them that high playdead

deep sapphire
#

It’s completely fine

umbral moss
#

it's within the design envelope but still not ideal

deep sapphire
#

??? It’s just over half of its max operating temperature

#

If it wasn’t safe to do it then why do all of them run as hot as they do

umbral moss
#

didn't say it was unsafe

deep sapphire
#

You certainly implied it lol

umbral moss
#

but there's a separation between high power mosfets like PSUs and VRMs and transistors

deep sapphire
#

Okay I’m talking about bog standard chokes here

#

They are entirely safe to operate at that temperature and will last many years

#

The only time it would cause an issue is if it heat soaked other components near them but I’m pretty sure engineers solved that or we’d have a bigger issue on our hands

#

Hence the use of heat spreaders

dull garnet
umbral moss
#

air cooling makes for annoying thermal management because you can only dissipate so much heat from a given volume of heatsink fins, and for VRMs where they can run at high temps it doesn't matter too much

#

baking your poor CPU at 95C because Tjmax is 105C is... not nice to your hardware at all

deep sapphire
#

That has nothing to do with mosfets

umbral moss
#

that's because they got conflated somehow

#

the original proposition was "normalize air cooling PCs again", when 1200W PC heat loads have dumb surface area requirements to keep the temps in a reasonable range

deep sapphire
#

You’re over thinking this, a component that is designed to operate upwards of 180c is perfectly fine running at 90c

umbral moss
#

water cooling is just more efficient per unit volume

deep sapphire
#

Water cooling still runs into surface area issues too, it only removes the heat from the radiator it’s just able to do it over a larger area but even water cooling can reach a limit hence why AIO units in single or dual configurations don’t particularly perform that well at higher thermal limits

dull garnet

not with winactivate

modest moss
#

it is a free upgrade yeah

#

I don't want it yet, but you can if you fancy it

umbral moss
#

it needs your windows 10 key, which it converts to windows 11 key and deactivates the old key

#

if you use insider builds it gives you a provisional key that's valid as long as you're using insider builds

#

but you need a valid key to begin with

#

so you can use your 10 key to activate windows, switch to insider builds, and then use that key forever

dull garnet
modest moss
#

fine

#

if there are no ! then I'd roll with it probably?

#

you might want chipset/storage whatever

#

saffy don't use the windows graphics driver, go to nvidia.com and get it there

dull garnet
#

MSI drivers :chad:

umbral moss
#

yeah, but MS also eats your old key when you "upgrade" for free

#

ever tried to go back to the old key?

#

no, like, the activation key for, say, 8 becomes a 10 key when you upgrade through the upgrade program

#

so if you reinstall 8 that key won't work anymore

#

you can carry a key forward forever because it's tied to your MS account, yeah, but once you upgrade it it's considered a valid key for whatever version it upgraded to

#

yeah, because the edge case of going back is pretty rare

#

but the early days of every new MS release are usually fraught with buyer's remorse

#

so if you want to go back to 10 from 11 it's... not easy if you have an upgrade key

definitely not, its cool to the touch, and trying to stress the SSD, the temp stat doesn't ever budge, at all,
i have drive monitoring setup, the temp stat has been the same since it was installed 4 hours ago, it logs data every 5 minutes and not a single one has budged from 50 C,
and yeah, no heatsink, its only a SATA M.2 drive, they dont generate much heat anyway .

"I have a legend in my hands: a pre-production Bitblaze Titan (opens in new tab) laptop based on the Baikal-M processor is ready," said Yana Brush, commercial director of Prombit, the company behind Bitblaze, in a blog post (opens in new tab). "A very decent built quality, thin aluminum case, light weight. I have tested some mainstream software applications: office programs and YouTube. Works great, lasts five hours on the battery. We continue testing in various workloads, getting ready for the official release."

#

Guys guys ... it can WATCH YOUTUBE

dull garnet
#

Nah it looks like a mid 10s thinkpad

odd sand
#

The heart of the Titan is the Baikal-M1 SoC, which uses eight outdated Arm Cortex-A57 cores operating at 1.50 GHz and outfitted with an 8MB L3 cache accompanied by an eight-cluster Arm Mali-T628 GPU with two display pipelines. The Cortex-A57 first appeared in a commercial product in 2015, whereas the Mali-T628 (Midgard 2nd Gen) has been around since 2014. The Baikal-M1 is made by TSMC using one of its 28nm-class nodes.

#

They claim the production version will look like this

#

They are correct though, if they just need to render websites and watch Youtube, that will work. (It will run Linux)

#

Will TSMC supply them with CPUs though? I thought there was a boycott

Or did they source a glut of these older CPUs
