Yeah, if the images were fewer pixels than the training resolution then upscaling would be a good idea. I'd usually lean towards traditional upscaling instead of img2img upscaling for that purpose, it would depend on the specific images though.

i think of img2img first mainly because i pretty much only use it for low denoise upscaling so it retains as much of the original image as possible while cleaning up a bit of the blur and cleaning up existing details.. haven't really found another way to do it that works as well

If I'm training, I just want to retain as much as possible of the original artist's style since styles are what interest me the most in loras. Minute details like intricate brush strokes are more likely to be lost at even low denoising through img2img. For training a character, I'd say it's up to personal preference. Also, traditional upscaling is considerably faster which is definitely something to consider if you need to process more than a handful of images.
