Hello, great fan of HDR gaming here, my experience is with True Black HDR 400 monitors.

The in-game HDR calibration is not adequate from modern HDR monitors, where both black and white point is absolute minimum for calibration.

I would recommend the following for adequate HDR experience:

  • White Point (With bright image showing result of the slider).
  • Black point (With dark image showing result of the slider).
  • Brightness slider for fine tuning.
  • Contrast slider for fine tuning.
  • Alternatively: Game can pull these settings from the Microsoft Calibration that players SHOULD be setting up if they own a HDR monitor.

Diablo 4 is a great example of a good functioning HDR Calibrator with images.

The goal with True Black HDR experience is to achieve a DARK area where you can still see dark details without experiencing grey blobs.
This is a challenge when you also have the "automatic eye brightness adaptation" graphics functionality when the player moving from dark to bright areas.

Correct, but they should be be a part of a separate Calibration menu page.
There is something about the Whitepoint and Brightness sliders where it's impossible to not have intense oversaturated light elements in the game.
Contrast is like a choice between completely black and big blobs of brown/grey in dark areas.
I know the feature is in beta, but early game image source design is extremely relevant for HDR compatibility.
You see it all the time in modern AAA games where the source is missing low end black color space.
