I've had it happening too and I think I figured out. I play fullscreen, but I do tab out occasionally. I'm pretty sure it just broke for me upon returning from doing something in a browser and going back to the game. The compass isn't showing and won't even pop up if I summon the bird. I'm gonna have to relog for it to come back.
