i'm thinking it might be related to the ancestors or souls thingy, but i really don't know yet... i just like looking at it for now...

maybe it grows with each ancestor and you eventually get something?

one of the concept arts showed something they called a "family tree" that grew as you expanded your nightfold, dunno if it's the same thing
