Uma Musume Anime 101
My quick recommendation if you just want to try something to find out whether you like the horse girl anime:
- Cinderella Gray if you tend to prefer more "serious" writing, higher production values, a funny protagonist, etc.
- Pretty Derby if you tend to prefer fluffy, CGDCT (cute girls doing cute things) writing, or just want to binge the whole franchise in release order. Note that most people seem to agree season 2 is the best of PD, and season 3 is the weakest.
Of course you get plenty of sports drama and CGDCT fluff either way, but CinGray and PD S2 are peak horse content. Every season/miniseries/movie of Uma Musume is mostly self-contained with different main characters, so it doesn't matter what order you watch them in.

Something I think Uma Musume is uniquely good at is the portrayal of character. The root of any particular horse always starts with the real aspects of the horse in question, then it's informed by the story of their racing career and by the fans; then it's further shaped by a bit of fanaticism and idealism, which is specially obvious in cases like Rice Shower or Suzuka but is always present
It's because of that earnestness and honesty and consistency that helps you get invested, and you "buy" the propaganda. It's hard to deny

something a guy on the internet once said that really stuck with me is there's a difference between writing stories based on real life, and writing stories based entirely on other stories; the latter eventually end up feeling really hollow and fake when it's just tropes and archetypes bouncing off other tropes and archetypes
so yes I agree that a big part of the "secret" to why Uma Musume is outperforming so many other cute girl franchises is that, even if the root inspiration was horses, being based in reality gives it that difficult-to-define X factor that makes us all buy into the characters as characters instead of just bundles of tropes

Bakushin is very eager, wanting to run in other higher distance races than just short distance races. IRL, his team overestimated his ability because he had amazing speed. With this, his true power was just for sprint races but his team had bigger dreams because of his pedigree (his father, Sakura Yutaka O, won a lot of middle distance races), so Bakushin O would go to a mile race, not win and then completely annihilate a sprint race afterwards
