I ran into a bug recently where one of my drivers was leaking memory and no tool I know of would reveal which it is
I think my biggest concentration of checks is The Big Parade (completed but) time rift into Dead Bird Studio, which also has a time rift into Ship Shape (as usual I have Tasksanity on)
My processes had like 3.5GB of RAM used, but Windows had all 16GB allocated and most of the swap space too
we did something very similar to this but then we wanted some locations to exist in multiple groups
makes sense, I think my only name group overlap is the progression/useful/filler item groups (which obv aren't checking startswith) overlapping with all the game-specific name groups
yeah cry pro has a really extensive in-engine modding framework (users provide a json and assets and it handles them) but we had to go out side the box, which we could have done using harmony type stuff but since we had source code and nobody else seemed to be doing harmony type stuff (so no worries about compat) it was like why not just write code directly

another factor for Nine Sols was that I'd already decided to prepend (Artifact), (Poison), and (Database) to a ton of the actual item names

the trouble currently i think is that the region completion messages gets added in the message queue when it attempts to send the region completion to the server but the item received messages gets added to the queue when an item is received from the server, so it ends up badly ordered

when one of the tasks has to wait for the server to respond first, it's likely to happen later
yeah, instead of processing the messaging the server sends back we just have an internal Queue that we stuff message display calls into

yeah, sent the location check and received the server message about it are two very different things
so let's see, i have the ability to hook when i send a thing to the server, or when the server gets back to the client
if you really want to, you can make checking the location record that you'd like to do something when the message arrives, and teach your message handler to look at that scheduled task map(???), but of course then you need to decide what to do if the message never arrives, and that quickly becomes more complexity than it's worth in most cases
right now if the region completion item was for you, it comes back via item receiver
if it was for another player... it sends the message immediately with no wait for the server

Oh let me explain:
The game is broken down into internal regions, where if you enter one a title card plays
item links might even change the timing
The region passes, in the case of my YAML, make it so that you can only interact with any item or NPC in that region if and only if you have the pass. AND you may not linger in a region with no pass for more than 10 seconds.
This is separate from region completion rewards, wherein you are awarded an extra free location upon completing every check inside a given region.
IMO the more important question is whether you want !collect to trigger region passes, because that affects whether "listen for server location updates" or "listen for in-game actions" is the correct implementation. Since that is reliable, it wins over questions about the server message timing you can't control anyway.
(it's generally agreed we don't want !collect to trigger goals, but cases like this are less clear)

Yes, the concern I have is you need to keep this nesting in mind and well documented
the typical danger you're probably thinking of is that if you have one function doing lock(A) { lock(B) { ... }}, and another function doing lock(B) { lock(A) { ... }}, then you're asking for a deadlock
you would prevent this by making A and B private objects so that this class/file can be absolutely certain that won't happen, and anyone can check that by reading only the one file in isolation

currently in this case a and b are both locked sometimes in other places but this should be the only place in the code they're ever both locked at once
(also double-check if you really need two locks, sometimes messes happen)

ok so i'm 100% sure that if the check from the region completion sends an item for another player, that message WILL come before "you completed the region" message
and if it sends a check that's for you, then it's a race between two different return from the server calls
so it'll be in the right order a lot in asyncs and some of the time otherwise
admittedly that does sound spooky, but probably beyond the "armchair code review" we can do here

for completeness: the other common gotcha is that if it's in any way possible for this method to call itself, it might end up deadlocking with itself. Which is a kind of "nesting", arguably. But you only need one lock to make that mistake.

if a "smaller", less-network-y method like RegionCompletionCheck() had lock() statements, I'd be more worried

the death wish version is an interesting challenge but one I'm usually bad at; Snatcher's death wish fights are the best IMO

i know it's loading the apworld and 'doing things' but beyond that

in general AP doesn't allow you to know the seed a game was generated with after generation
so when UT tries to re-generate your slot, it won't have access to the exact seed, it has to rely on your world being deterministic and having the right UT hooks for whatever slot_data is needed to recreate the logic-relevant randomness, like entrance/level/spawn/etc rando

thanks for the explainer ixrec, the key gap i had before it was not knowing that AP doesn't include the seed anywhere convenient for UT to read
anyway, the universal part is that UT might just work on an .apworld that didn't do anything special to support UT, but because AP hides the seed that will always fundamentally rely on the world having zero logic-changing randomness (and the yaml you give UT having no randomized options and matching exactly what the slot was generated with)
makes sense, that surprises a lot of people
oh i do also forget about the ability to randomize your options

i did more when i did a lot of LTTP
personally I think hiding the seed by default is a bad design, emblematic of how this system spun out of an LttP rando aimed at the most hardcore competitive kind of rando players, rather than the broad audience AP receives now that could really use the features an exposed seed would allow

it does handle the sleep by making a separate background thread, and that thread sleeps for 2 seconds
while the main thread just keeps going

fortunately the background thread doesn't directly display any messages, just adds a message to the list of messages a player should see

even what I posted above is relying on Unity's Update() method getting called by the engine regularly
they're definitely to be avoided when you don't have a problem that requires them
but since we're AP devs, about half of the most critical parts of our mods are textbook networking and concurrency problems

That's a given. Freezing the game for any reason is a capital offense
for me i have a list of checks which have been sent but not yet confirmed and i just let that fill up as much as it wants
it is not worth setting up some more elaborate scheduling system to ensure I only use a single thread/task if you check a hundred locations all at once
and then when the confirm comes in they get removed
and then only on a connect will attempt to resend

I actually only started doing that when it became apparent that moving code from the AP networking tasks to the Unity lifecycle methods helped mitigate native Unity crashes
well, I accept this as an inevitable cost; the typical failed check scenario is the player's whole internet went down, so retrying individual location checks seems like a poor response
what I try to do is log a bright orange message telling them to quit and restart to force a reconnect
because I don't know if the connection info changed, if they're having other networking issues, and the "resync on connect" code is what I trust to handle recovery from all the possible mismatched states (since that has to exist for async games to function anyway)
on the flip side, the modding tools are amazing
and mod intercompatibility is a whole other thing
it's still wild that I got Outer Wilds rando to also randomize the content of 5 community content mods
my only negative experiences with Unity itself are some instability in the games
buuuuut I'm 90% convinced that's just most game engines
see AHiT (Unreal engine) issues literally today
(I guess there's also the whole kerfuffle over their pricing plan, but that's more a problem for game devs deciding what engine to use; by the time I show up that's long past)

So it was broken into two locks: One prevents you from interacting, and another teleports you away, and you could enable one or both in the YAML

You know what? Let's try it. Next month, I will try to make a YAML that is capped at level 3, and see how far I can go with it. In order to make sure I don't hold up the game because I have not personally devised an Astley strategy, it'll have to have the shell collecting goal, but I'll try to beat every boss I can within the month.

if you decide you want to randomize it, imo it's best to have played the parts normal before randomizing, but because it's a big game as soon as you reach capital sequoia it's possible to randomize only the bits before that.

here are my games for this round, they're identical except one uses 30 puzzle piece batches x20, and the other is 1 puzzle piece batches x600
my hunch is that the larger one will be better for everyone else (small enough count of batches that it might actually be worth telling me about them) but the playing experience for me might be worse

i generally have been just playing it whenever i have pieces, that's why i left myself in bk mode the entirety of last month
it's just a webapp so it's not much hassle to keep open

so the large batches might make it so i take a lot longer to get merges
I did not even consider that solving the puzzle would be an issue
if you happen to be connected when a new piece comes in
it also plays a little sound effect

Thanks for updating Crystal Project before we got started. Let's download it and set up my YAML
Updated Jigsaw, Soul Blazer, Pokemon Crystal, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, and Crystla Project to the latest available versions.
Okay, let's try to figure out a YAML that will make it actually possible to beat the game at level 3, even when it's randomized.
First: Set it to clamshells. I'll still try to beat every boss I get to in time, but I can't guarantee it, and I would rather not slow everyone down or cheat.
I will not randomize jobs, I will not shuffle boss checks.
I will shuffle shops even though I might regret it (probably need lots of consumables. If I end up needing them I may just cheat and add an unshuffled shop that sells them).
I will not shuffle regions, I will shuffle home points because that can't make it impossible.
I will make mounts progressive. It will probably make things harder, but more consistent.
I will turn off level gating, and set my level cap in-game. That way if it ends up impossible, I will simply level up to the lowest level that is possible.
I will try out maximum_passive_points at 50 because it's new and might be fun!
Keys will be in key ring mode just as preference.
Obscure routes and hop to it will be set to true and one hope beyond, but I don't think that is relevant.
Progressive equipment is set to FALSE. In the vanilla game you do need all sorts of skips to get late game equipment early.
Next, I will hint equipment and spells that I will need to beat certain bosses. If it is locked directly behind that boss, I will give myself the item in order to avoid abandoning the seed.
So, required items:
1- For humans, I need way to poison, bleed, sleep and burn. That means I want to hint fish skewer, plague mask, torch, and a way to reach any single one of these enemies: https://i.imgur.com/7SRxfHs.png
So I'll also hint progressive mounts, since none of these can be reached solely by walking
Would be nice if I can hint a number of progressive mounts instead of all or none
2- For draining MP from bosses, I want reverse polarity and zethers. This is handled by my consumables concession earlier, so no hints needed.
3- For the possessor, I want crab's claw, pointy hat, shaman, nomad, assassin. I also want mirror shield, mender's ring, sanity ring, pact ring, nomad's guard, blue cape, paladin wand, diamond wand, caster's ring.
4- For enemies that put me to sleep I want awake rings and ribbons, for fast enemies I want first strike mitts and rondels.
5- For single enemies, I want batons, fursuit, blank pages, quintar pelt.
6- For miscellaneous fights I want red hats, beatsmith vest, weaver robe, celestial crown,
7- For red guardian I want aphotic edge, fishgutter, poison talon.
8- For summons I can't beat or find, I want training sword or master materia.
Even with all items, anubis and true final boss should be impossible.

i recently learned you can acutally get up to that balcony with no mounts at all after i misread the tracker and thought it was telling me to do it (actually i'd had a quintar pass and should have used that!). If you want to do it mountless i've been able to do it from the left side, with auto-jump on, one step down from the top, but it's extremely picky!
i like your setup a lot more though because it isn't a huge pain to do, i'm gonna use that next time

there's a salmon race in Crystal Project where you ride a salmon like a horse
and you can rent a salmon to participate in the race if you haven't unlocked an actual salmon for yourself yet
you can escape the bounds of the race to go open chests within the time limit, if you're quick enough
It's harder to make a list of those for archipelago because I usually only keep track of stuff that's relevant for vanilla

I don't know how to cheese most sky arena fights except with beastmaster's jugular
But in order to even get beastmaster with only ibek, I have to climb castle ramparts and deal with all sorts of enemies with mutually incompatible builds, which means I'm forced to dodge some of them
If anyone can find my next progressive mount, I can skip this whole part and just use owl
I have two mount instruments in my game, but they both need one more mount to reach. That means unless I find a way to reach them anyway, Alop or Llisandur must find one.

You can get all the way here with a rental salmon and unlock all three doors to the temple as well as grab the checkpoint
Alas, the temple itself has several jumps you can't do without a gliding mount
Consequently this allows me to reach the treetops
