to me the rings are textbook "this one's for speedrunners" items, every game has some of those health-dependent buffs and I never use them because they're not reliable at the skill level I have

Unlike in other games, the rings are super forgiving

#

They give a massive boost and are guaranteed to trigger

#

In Dark Souls games, for example, they are way harder to use, and the boost they give is nice but only good if you stack it with other buffs

#

In Tunic, the game is designed to put you in low HP for a while instead of killing you fast, and the rings swing a fight on their own

#

There's also a secret mechanic where you survive a hit that would have otherwise killed you

#

The specifics of that mechanic are complicated and poorly documented, but it serves to keep you at low HP for longer, allowing the rings to be more useful

in this case I had the stats but not the final item that makes dodging way easier, so it's a very different and more cautious fight, especially since some of the attacks are partially unblockable
