S13 is by far the best of the "new" seasons I've seen so far, easily blowing S11 and S12 out of the water in storytelling, characterization, and emotion alone, although the "best humor" award still goes to the Fire Chapter. S13 has it all: great action, great animation, a great (if simple) story, probably one of the best villains in the show (right up there with Garmadon, Nadakhan, Morro, Harumi, and the Iron Baron), and one of the best settings (literally a D&D campaign, what's not to love?).
Very solid season all around.
My revised ranking: S9 >>> S8 > S3 > S13 > S6 > S11 (Ice) > S5 > S11 (Fire) > S12 > S10 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> S2 > S1 > S4 > S7
Next up: The Virtues of Spinjitzu special, followed by The Island!

Okay, at first it was funny, but now I really feel bad for this guy. That's genuine terror and PTSD right there. What horrors did he go through while briefly living on the island, and what nightmares did he have to face just to leave?
He was already shanghaied into this venture (that he expressly did NOT want to go on, and the Ninja forced him against his will to do so while he wasn't in his right mind), and now when he's face-to-face with the creatures that once hunted him, all he can do is curl into a fetal position ball in fear.

Granted, the animal ended up not being dangerous, but still.
A helmet isn't dangerous normally, and is normally seen as a means of protecting oneself, but when it was presented to a soldier with PTSD from WW1 as a demonstration of what shell shock did to a man, the soldier could only recoil in horror and scream in fear as he looked at it, probably remembering the friends that he had lost who once wore that very helmet.
A trigger doesn't have to be inherently dangerous to still cause someone harm. This is actually probably the most uncomfortable I've been watching Ninjago, because even though it's played for "laughs", Twitchy's PTSD is absolutely real, and none of the Ninja are showing him any respect or care that he desperately needs.
Seriously. He needs it. Even as the Ninja play soccer with their newfound friend, this guy is still curled up truly believing that at any moment some horrible beast is about to tear through the jungle underbrush and drag him straight to hell.
And he only breaks out of it when "Zippy" leaves.
And he's back at it again as soon as he sees the totem poles, because he knows exactly what they are and what they can do to a person.

Sure Lloyd, ask the PTSD-afflicted survivor who barely managed it on his own when he was sane and who can only barely manage it now when he's mentally unstable for help. That sounds like a brilliant--NOPE, can't do it. Lloyd, screw you. Seriously, screw you. Kid's show or not, "it'll be fine" phrase be damned, you NEVER ask a person afflicted with severe PTSD to once more face the thing that drove them to that severely unstable mental state in the first place.
THIS. IS. NOT. RIGHT. This is manipulative, and morally and ethically wrong on all fronts. This is the first time I'm genuinely pissed off and annoyed at how the Ninja treat this guy with zero respect and with such little regard for his mental and emotional well-being, when they've shown in the past to be much more caring than this.
And the show itself treats him as a joke character. The "paranoid" one.
Regardless of this miniseries' quality, I'm knocking several points off for this.

This isn't the same thing! This is PTSD, this is mental trauma, not a battle. You can't just recover from that at the push of a button. The man faced horrors on his own, and he's just a normal guy. He doesn't have your Ninja abilities or elemental powers.
He shouldn't have been forced into this position in the first place. It's the Ninja's fault that he's even here when he didn't want to be. Why couldn't they have just left him alone? They essentially kidnapped him and hauled him over to the island via manipulation (he wasn't in his right state of mind, and didn't remember not agreeing to join them, so they told him that he did agree so that he would join).
And now Lloyd's telling him to "face his fear"? This is like taking a soldier with severe PTSD and throwing him right back on the front lines and telling him "you're stronger than you think".

If I were to ignore the mistreatment I would be ignoring Twitchy as a character. The sole reason why the mistreatment exists is because the Ninja conned him into coming with them. It's his sole purpose for being on the island. They didn't need him. They only needed his guidance at the start, but they could've just left him on the ship and asked him beforehand anything they needed to know.

You should've just recaptured the prisoners, gotten the reward money from the police for each successful recapture, and then go through with the plan on your own, saving yourself all that time, trouble, and payment for your workers. You could've been so much richer.

Awful characterization, including assassination of almost every single Ninja (but especially Lloyd) and Ronin; a story that ultimately went nowhere besides telling us "something exists out there"; a character literally designed to be mistreated and turned into a joke despite having severe PTSD out of the whole ordeal (which wasn't even resolved in the first place), leaving a very uncomfortable and sour taste in my mouth; AND an extremely boring setting that also borderlines on racist stereotypes with the tribesmen.
Oh there's a few good things! I liked the crystal tech, that was cool. I liked the animation and the visuals, those were awesome. But everything else...
JUNK. Even S7 was better than this travesty.

Oh yeah, that's another thing I forgot to mention: Lloyd straight-up abandoned Twitchy in the middle of nowhere. He went off to go rescue his friends and asked Twitchy to come along (which I already made a rant for so I'm not gonna get into that again), but then when Twitchy didn't come, Lloyd just went on his own.
In the end, Lloyd didn't even need Twitchy. He saved his friends on his own (not counting the derpy dragon thing). And then he forgot about Twitchy entirely.
So he basically stranded a PTSD-afflicted, extremely terrified man who lacked mental stability and proper safety instruction and supplies in a jungle that, according to him, was filled to the brim with poisonous and dangerous animals, not to mention the stone guardians who could easily kill him.

I love how detailed everything is! I love the later seasons of Ninjago (except The Island, f*ck that miniseries with a chainsaw and three pogo sticks), but I always felt there was something...missing in regards to the animation. It was detailed and cool in its own way, but it lacked that massive sense of scale and depth that S8 through S10 had.
This new series(?) seems to be bringing back that sense of scale and depth, while also adding on all the extra bits that S11 introduced (the more detailed uniforms, for example), AND just making everything look better in general with smoother animation, better lighting, and cleaner texturing.

I think it's like Steven Universe Future. Same show, different brand. SU creators had to rebrand the series as a short one off epilogue series. So if they (lego) want to continue down this path, then a rebrand of ninjago would be the logical path

I wonder if they're sticking to the 11-minute episodes, or if it's back to 22 minutes. Personally, I liked the 22-minute runtime better, even if each season was a little shorter because of it. It felt less rushed, and allowed each episode to contain quite a bit of plot.
