#Zelda Legend of Link The Legend of
1 messages · Page 3 of 1
I am quite curious how you'd react to a lot of it
I guess the least spoilery thing worth knowing upfront is that most of the big differences from the game are in, naturally the first and last volumes, but also volumes 6-7
Whenever I eventually get to it I'll probably talk about it either here or in #1019699399946932284
You already know the one thing I know about the manga and what my opinion on that is
ftr the manga earns it
how far did the manga series go
it's a good amount of volumes
11 volumes, covers the whole storyline of the game (minus gameplay of course) plus some original material
Twilight Princess was the first time this specific little mangaka/mangaka group made a full story from the original material
They had done adaptations into manga before, but they were pretty short and not that much to write home about, the Twilight Princess manga has been received extremely well
oh i meant what game did they get up to
btw I wrote a summary ^here of all the imo interesting differences between the TP game and manga
They had done adaptations of other Zeldas before including OOT, but TP is the latest one
Has been in publication since like 2019 I think
huh i thought they did a Skyward Sword manga
oh, huh, I was not expecting a 2D hookshot
hopefully it's less clunky than Super Metroid's grapple beam
it is so fun to use
They did, they did a lot of Zelda titles into manga
but like I said all of them were relatively short and simple, the TP manga stepped it up a lot
it's basically a full story and work of its own
also since you're still getting through link to the past, I'll take today's short session to finish off a bunch of these heroic quests I've been collecting in TOTK
Once I'm done with those, I will officially have nothing left to do in the game, there's probably some quests and npcs I haven't found yet or something, but with 140+ hours into the game, I have pretty much done way more than I ever needed to do to consider this game fully completed
ah, and this is why the dungeon map is an important item
im rebuilding Lurelin right now
I thought I was about to be stuck on this dungeon but nope this particular wall was not solid
wtf
first try
low heart noise low heart noise low heart noise
this damsel in distress looks extremely similar to the first one
i always thought these looked like reese's puffs
you're not wrong
possibly because they are the same sprite but recoloured
here's a good practice sentence for Nire
The funny part is this reminds me that Bolson originally was going to resemble the carpenters from Ocarina of Time, his entire demeanor and design is entirely based on them who apparently on the Japanese version of OOT they were more overtly portrayed as gay with how they spoke using femenine speech and called Link a ''kawaii booya''
see this is why I play games like this in the original
you never know what weird differences crop up
Yeah the carpenters in OOT were hard to localize as their representation is entirely based on how japanese media represented gay men
I wonder if they're actually different or if these crystals are just making them look blonde
damn good for them
Heyyy I was able to read 'soshite' without having to rely on the hiragana/katakana chart
Am learnin!
ok, so I was wondering why damsel 1 called him Ganon but damsel 2 called him Ganondorf
but apparently the convention in this game is Ganondorf the Thief vs Dark Lord / Demon King Ganon, I guess the dorf is just a mere mortal thing
oh, that's why you call him Greedo
Oh wow I was able to figure out ''mitsuketa'' too
lol yes
aaaaand timeline paradox achieved!
LttP reminds me of Star Wars in a strange way, im not entirely sure why though
hm, I suppose it is a modern genre-defining mishmash of fantasy tropes, while Star Wars is more sci-fi tropes
yea
i mean "may the way of the Hero lead to the Triforce" sounds like a "may the Force be with you" or maybe even "live long and prosper"
though actually i don't know what it says in Japanese
it starts with ga
カガ
I suspect this font is attaching the nigori (two little strokes in the corner) separately to save font space, which is why they're perfectly vertical and kinda overlapping part of the ka shape
I was going to ask what that specific symbol was since the one before the name looks very similar and I was confused on whether I chose the right one or not
so maybe its not as obvious as in a "proper" font that it's a ga
in general these old low-rez fonts tend to use a lot of horizontal and vertical lines in places where the written language would normally prefer slants and curves
man why does the katakana 'ka' looks so similar to the hiragana 'ga'
Okay now the text recognized it as the name 'ganondorf' lol
'ganondorofu iu-to...'
yeah
that's how I recognize katakana
''the pointy ones''
tozoku*
it wasn't complete
the thief ganondorf huh
yup
this is starting to make sense now
I like that ''the thief'' is made up of ''theft/stealing'' 盗 and ''foe/enemy'' 賊
zoku in particular is very easy to remember once you've seen a few of the other words it's in
海賊☆【かいぞくkaizoku】
noun / ~の noun: pirate; sea robber
what are you playing, ixrec?
Link to the Past / Kamigami no Triforce?
Oh yeah I know kaizoku from Marine
no triforce? just like in real life
Hololive no sankise, kaizoku dan senchou no, houshou marine desuuu
I never played link to the past
it's funny how before I play a game I hear about how everyone except me has played it a hundred times, and then only after I start do all of the "oh I never played that"s start
そして、再び聖地をみつけたのが、ガノンドロフ言う盗賊だのよ。
oh whoops wrong screencap
I guess I could do that one too
''and then, it was a bandit/thief named Ganondorf who found the holy grounds/sanctuary again''
technically と言う and だったのよ but yeah that's all the important words
I figured 聖地 in particular is a good vocab word to know, you see 聖 holy and 地 land in a million words especially in fiction like this
そして、再び聖地をみつけたのが、ガノンドロフと言う盗賊だったのよ。
oh wow those little fixes changed so much that the DeepL translation became much clearer:
And it was a bandit named Ganondorf who found the sanctuary again.
also while I do this one I'll just say yes you're correct
iirc the TP manga even called the triforce the 聖三角 holy triangle
Ganondorf is the Gerudo King/King of the Thieves/Bandits
Ganon is usually described with the more classic term Demon King/Mao 魔王
also my ocarina turned a bird-shaped weather vane into a real bird
not sure what to do with that
...wait
I could've just walked up to this guy and bought a bottle
how many hours ago
fast travel
huh
uh, the one after Ganon?
Uhhh I think so, the one after the second 'Ganon' which looks like a bunch of vertical sticks
I can't figure it out at all
fair, that one doesn't survive pixelation very well
it's 倒せる
also a good vocab word actually
Ooohh wow, I actually did get that kanji but since it didn't look anything like the pixelated one I thought ''this can't be right''
Especially since the kanji by itself gave me the translation of 'reversed' 'upside down' and I thought ehh I don't think that's right but apparently all together it's ''can defeat/beat''
yeah these pixelations aren't great for some kanji
yup
Inoritsute imasu
🙏
聖地ガノンドロフ。。。いいえ、開の魔王ガノンを倒せるのはあなただけ。。。祈つています。
'The holy land of Ganondorf.... No, only you can defeat the demon king. I'm praying for you.'
祈っています inotteimasu
little tsu, the ri isn't there since it's part of the verb ending being conjugated
wait
that's touzoku ganondorf not seichi lol
Oh that makes more sense, I think I accidentally wrote the entire thing and pressed space for the japanese text to autocomplete
and 闇 yami / darkness instead of 開 open (those are probably two of the most common kanji with that radical, I'm sure I made this mistake once)
and it gave me a completely different thing
I was paying so much attention to finding the other stuff that I didn't even think of that not making sense
Ah that one too gave me issues
I was wondering since it didn't seem to make much sense
盗賊ガノンドロフ。。。いいえ、闇の魔王ガノンを倒せるのはあなただけ。。。祈っています。
there we go
oh i just realised they continued this trend in BotW/TotK with Bolson
yep that looks right
''The Thief Ganondorf... no, only you can defeat the Demon King of Darkness/Dark Lord Ganon. I'm praying for you.''
Well that was fun
Good thing I'm just practicing, since a lot of times I end up writing nonsense
great, one of the mt hebra boulders got upset that I dodged it and decided to bounce horizontally into me
To be fair I'm trying to read kanji from a super pixelated version of the symbols so I'll cut myself some slack
yeah, kanji in these fonts are harder than they'd normally be
I think I remember you mentioning how good of a job they usually do at adapting such complex characters into as little information as possible and with limited visuals
but I guess some of them don't quite make it
Lurelin Village is rebuilt
when you have a full vocabulary, these pixelations are good enough that it's "obvious" which one was intended
but it is a bit unfair on a novice lol
Yeah that too, I mean I even confuse some katakana with hiragana when I try to re-write these myself
The biggest thing I managed to do was successfully read and understand ''soshite''
I've seen the ''shi'' symbol so much and I recognized the ''te'' symbol that it just clicked, and I heard the word ''soshite'' so much that I didn't even need to 'translate' it in my head, I just knew what it meant
Oh and I also recognized the ''imasu'' at the end too

oh
i thought it would be like how a bird will swallow a stone to mash up food in it's stomach
but i guess Like Likes have teeth so they don't need thay
i hate seeing the Great Deku Tree all sad and gloomed up :(
hmm what outfit should i pull the Master Sword in
so fucking magical
Finished with ||the wind temple, just gotta watch the plot cutscenes but I'll do that in bed||
HOWS THE PRESIDENT STANDING
Epona is looking a lil bit different in this game
modern "quest log" systems have spoiled me
it is so hard to decide where to go now that I've booted up LttP
which dungeons have you completed
dark temple and dark swamp
but don't give it away yet, I'm still looking around
AAAAAAAA I AM AN IDIOT
bonk
let's do this well
...or maybe not
or maybe yes???
ah, all magic costs are halved, neat
guess that wasn't exactly main quest progress
i believe you should be able to temper your sword now
I still have no clues as to where dwarfbro is though
(the well being right here was the closest thing I had to an idea)
pffff
good thing I decided to give Kakariko another once-over, I just figured out the tavern had a back door
here is a hint ||dwarf friend is in the Dark World||
lol
unrelated but, every time I go into one of these old school 2D Zelda shops, it makes me think of modern roguelites
hehe yeah
...and the dude with 6 beds just told me the ocarina does fast travel
so I would've gotten that eventually
I wasn't crazy!
what !
oh no, she wants to be a chicken again but the powder doesn't work in reverse
That moment when your fursona is a chicken
And you accidentally get to live your dreams, albeit briefly
Cap did you genuinely not know about this chicken lady
if she does I didn't figure it out
tried every magic doohickey in my inventory, can't even talk to her again
anyway found a piece of heart in the old prison basement
pronably just a silly easteregg
You’re a silly easter egg
unrelated
I finally realized that this blob of pixels in the middle of the wanted posters/signs is supposed to be my face

yeah it's your wanted poster
ye use the net
oh, right, the net
you can reflect Aganihms balls back at him with the net
you didn't give me this the last time I came here!?
he didn't!
I can only assume there's some requirement to have progressed past a certain point in the game before he'll trust you with it
I know I talked to this kid the first time I ever came to Kakariko so it's not my fault
there you go
Fromsoft players: It's not fun if you're not constantly wondering where the fuck you need to go next
Has to be one of the few adventure rpg ish type games that to this day refuse to add a quest log or any log of any kind
Why did they give him the Pinocchio nose
he can poke out Ganons eye with that
quest logs are. a god send
I agree that minimaps kinda suck though
there's been a minimap since Zelda I though
second row of hearts woo
woo
wait ix important question
do you like Light World dungeon music or Dark World dungeon music more

I think I remember the light and dark overworld themes
but the dungeon themes I just don't remember right now
ok Light World is like "dodododododdodo doooo dododdododdododo doo" and Dark World is like "dadadadadaddaadadaddadadadaadadadadadadadada"
and the dungeon music is duruuduru duru duru duu
?? nice trolling
im not trolling
so is the spring of happiness a total scam
you need to put in 100 total
ok it is one of those things
aaah the teleporting water vortexes are a thing in the dark world too
but they can't get me anywhere new either, dang
dang, fast travel bird doesn't support the lost woods
yeah I think I'm stuck again
aaah there's a portal in the lost woods behind a hammer peg
just my luck that the only portal I did find on my own revealed nothing I couldn't already reach from the ziggurat
ah-ha
oh, it just won't let me warp
it's not really about minimaps being a ''new'' addition or not it's mostly just disliking them when a map is already a thing in the game since it just kind of inherently makes the player keep looking at the minimap and check all those icons and markers rather than actually you know, paying attention at the game
I remember Ocarina of Time 3DS for example has a super redundant 'minimap' on the lower screen that isn't even the map of the area you're in that shows you all the terrain and ''walls'' of the area like when you're in a town it just shows you the big map that roughly tells you what region you're in which is super useless
It's not a big deal though, but I do kinda agree with some opinions about minimaps in these types of open world adventure games
I just bought a red shield and I have no idea what it does
the minimap thing is complicated and depends very heavily on the game imo
the frequent complaint that open world games fall into a "stare at dots on the minimap" routine is very real, but often a symptom of much deeper issues, like not being the kind of game that should've ever been an open world in the first place
That's not untrue, but the minimap is also a problem into itself, especially when it leads to the game design being affected by having the player rely so much on the minimap's extreme usefulness to find stuff that you don't make the world itself engaging or have the player actually pay attention to the world
BOTW and TOTK don't have this problem that much because there's really not a whole lot of icon hunting and even then most of the icons on your map will either be the couple of settlements and towns and the shrines and that's about it unless you wanna fill the map with icons for whatever purpose
The map and the design of the games aren't as affected by the minimap as other games, a lot of people mention Witcher 3 when it comes to this specific conversation I've noticed but I haven't played Witcher 3 so I can't comment on that
yeah, Razbuten's video on minimaps is all about Witcher 3 as the bad example
although that's a perfect example of my own point; Witcher 3 is great when you're in the quests, but running to each waypoint is just busy work in between the real content
I don't even remember if Witcher 2 had a minimap, but it certainly didn't have problems with overrelying on it
i completely forgot Witcher 3 had a minimap
Even Witcher 1 had a minimap, but I don't remember relying on it that much, if at all really
Also unrelated but here's one thing that I hate about BOTW/TOTK:
so many people being like ''oh hey you look a lot like the hero of legend. .....too bad you're not lol shortie'' / ''hey that looks so much like the master sword! .... even though it isn't of course''
I talked to a group of Gerudo girls at one stable and they were all talking about Link and I even approached with the master sword to make sure they knew I was the guy
They recognized me and the sword but they were like ''yeah right this skinny short guy could never be the hero!''

0/10 game
i think it's funny
it is funny
what the
epic Durania mask
question since any moment now I'm gonna go to the endgame of.. well the game
do you get significant resources or weapons on the way to the final fight or should I be farming high level weapons like bows right now before going?
mostly no; the best resources you can get on the way still require killing stuff that (at least for me) requires decent equipment ||iirc a silver lynel, silver lizalfos/moblins/etc, and a gloom hands; that lynel is especially popular in speedruns||, and there won't be a ton of it
best moment of my final boss approach

ahhh well... in that case I might need to look up where I can find some good bows before I go there
noice I got all of em now
did you not leave Hyrule Castle with a pile of gloom bows?
oh I also need to drop these at my house, no way in hell I'm gonna use them lol
yeah I did
.... like 20 hours back from where I currently am in the game
i have 5 demon kings bows which is epic except for when i get gloomed
I hoarded those bows for most of the rest of the game since I kept getting good enough bows from other sources and rarely found anything where max arrow damage mattered to me
I definitely need as big arrow damage as I can get so I'm probably gonna need to spend some time either looking around for bows or trying to see if I can get some demon king bows from gloom hands
Oh!!
Huh!

Alright then, I'll take it...
whoa !
aaand this is what I had come here for, alright let's mosey
trying to clean up everything left before finishing
niceu
alright so apparently there's some good bows around the deep Akkala and Eldin regions
I'll go take a look around there and go finish the game
well you're definitely more prepped than I am
I am extremely over prepared even though I still have overall less hours put into the game than you, I have like around 140~ I remember you had at least 200 hours
my Switch claimed I had over 200
maybe time left running while I got interrupted by stuff added up faster than I thought
or... are you following any walkthroughs?
I was on 120 when I had finished every shrine and the side adventures + main quests without any walkthrough, 200 is definitely on the longer side
Ehhh I'm not really following any walkthroughs at all unless you consider the fact that I looked up the locations of the old map chests a walkthrough
I've just kinda... binged all that there was left to do in these last couple of days really, all the rest of the time I was slowly getting through quests and fucking around
'sploring and stuff
hm, did you get all the pirate treasure stuff?
that might be the biggest chunk of quests that I technically started, but never figured out more than a few riddles and just lost interest
I'm not sure, that's not ringing a bell right now I don't remember doing any pirate treasure quest I think
I did pirate related quests but not pirate treasure
uh that guy who keeps putting all the fancy clothes in chests in tents in caves
and the one cave with a hundred troll chests containing green rupees
Oh yeah I did that a long time ago already
It was one of the first full armor sets I got
....okay... something weird I just noticed, Link has his mouth open for some reason
Ooooh I actually should go build Revali's bow, I'm not using Urbosa's shield and scimitar or Mipha's spear but I'm definitely using Revali's bow
I'll go do that after I farm one or two good bows
Apparently according to some lists, the bow I got earlier in that screencap is one of the best base bows
too bad I'm not gonna use it because || it's Twilight Princess Zelda's bow ||
too precious to risk breaking
I don't even know what half these weapons are so you're doing fine
the ||unique weapons from the depths|| can be bought at thingy statues
oh
i believe that bow can still be bought at the poe statues
random youtube comment "fun fact: in JP LttP the mountain was 'hebra', only in the dark world was it death mountain"
I've been wondering why Zelda told me to come find her in Death Mountain when there is no Death Mountain in this game
Apparently in the JP version it was labeled as 'death mountain' on the credits
Alright, I managed to find some good enough bows and I even acquired a new zonnan horn I didn't have, let's do this
wait wait what
so I walk into the dark lost woods
I see a hole that looks like it might drop me into a cave, so I go down there
and one room over I find a dungeon compass???
now I have the map
and here I was thinking "maybe I'll find the dungeon entrance before bed"
there we go, a third of the dungeon explored and I finally found the entrance
and it's not at all where the map marker led me to believe
the whole forest is the dungeon :3
(which I get is completely correct because it's marking the crystal, not the dungeon entrance, and this dungeon is actually correlated with the whole forest instead of one tiny building)
oh! already here...? I thought I'd have to go through a bunch of monster fights to get to Ganon
but yeah, exploring is fun
Close enough
I just wish there had been a single hint anywhere in the game of the lost woods portal that is apparently the only way to reach this half of the map
^
||this does kind of make a paradox now but it's cool so whatevs||
I want to think if Zelda and Link had seen that in the beginning Zelda would've been like
''.... yeah maybe let's leave that alone''
derp, I said "the" dungeon entrance, but this dungeon obeys none of the rules
how so?
||wait never mind, it would have made one had Zelda seen the last of the mural, but she didn't so it's kosher||
ah-ha, this means I sort of get mid-dungeon checkpoints!
oh that's what the hand does
this is where i started to get really sweaty palms lol
oh no, not this again
lol
i do love how LttP's form in the Dark World is a pink bunny rabbit
iirc it's supposed to symbolise his innocence or something
you'd think dying would slow the hand down a little
alright nevermind, now here we go gang
fucking having me jump down so many holes
this is the last one we promise
Oooooohhhhhhh that actually explains something that comes up in a later game, makes sense
Ixrec will probably notice it once he gets to that game
nap room idk
fun fact: ||if you skipped any of the main quests, then their bosses appear here for real (not just in the cutscene), up to a 5 boss rush (4 temples + phantom ganons)||
||oh like BotW ?||
ruby on a stick getto
well this doesn't look freaky at all
ok that's enough for tonight
alrighty, now for real for the actual last time, here we go gang
I can't seem to find the entrance to the final third of the dungeon but I am missing a room still in the first third so I just let myself die inside the dungeon to make a good save state
swole
such a good fight
yeeeeaahh booooiiii
so glad I'm wearing this outfit
you've used flurry rush before, riiiiiight?
..... still, seriously, why the katana?
Oof, okay, wait for my turn to attack, got it
damn
H-hayai!!!
El Rey Demonio, nice
this is a proper stand off right here sheesh
...did I get him?
oooohh shit okay
OH SHIT, OKAY!
not that I likely ever will replay TotK, but, if I did, trying this whole final boss fight series with zero allies would be on my shortlist
this is so chaotic with all of them running around
leave me alone guys, we're having a moment!!!
also wow I actually am beating the shit out of him
I guess I did over prepare for this
Mineru just slapping him on the face as we're staring each other down
even I was overprepared enough that iirc I didn't apply any buffs
''kakatte koi !''
his whole stoic samurai schtick is so cool
OOOH FUCK
and after this phase (don't click yet) ||it is so satisfying to see him discard that facade completely and throw a tantrum when he realizes we're actually winning
||
yabe I almost instinctively read that
I like that || he uses a bunch of different weapons and he even uses my own moves ||
this is the type of 1 on 1 fight that a lot of us character action players praise like the pinnacle of boss fights
OOOHHH FUCK
I was wondering why there's a message about horses there but no caballero / horseman means knight, it's talking about your knight's shield, duh
he just fucking || dodged me right after I dodged HIM ||

ye Caballero means Knight, a Horseman is a Jinete (Horseman, Rider, Jockey)
this has the funny effect that in the speedrun you just charge straight at him because provoking him to dodge is faster than you dodging first
oh yeah that actually works better lol
....wait....
is he.... is he || PERMANENTLY taking away my hearts...? ||
:flutternodevenharder:
half the theme of this fight is he just breaks all the rules because demon king scary
the ridiculous health bar going far longer than any other health bar would usually go kinda hits that point across your face from the get go like Ganondorf is hitting his huge demon king hammer on my head right now
ughhh I can't get the timing of his attacks down at all

I play Metal Gear Rising and Devil May Cry on DMD how am I having trouble with this of all things
GOTTEM
scrub
now that is a summary I haven't heard before
look at this goofy idiot
OOOH SHIT || GF ASSIST ||
Yeeeaaahh!!!

oh that's a sick shot
oh shit this is some Shadow of the Colossus type shit going on right now

the funniest part is, I legitimately don't even remember that
context matters
damn they're even giving me a cinematic camera and everything
alright I gotta figure out what I gotta do now
oh fuck I'm playing Touhou now...
hahah it's adorable that || Zelda follows me around and picks me up after I fall down ||
kinda sucks that || Link doesn't get a cool dragon form though... ||
Oh wait I do have the furry set though...
yeeeeeeaahhh
such a good fight
still haven't used those yellow stamina circles I see

dang
alright enough of the fursuit now I'll change back before I get the final cutscene
sayonara
Do it now!!!
Finish the mission, Link!
WOAH

BWAAAAAAAM

oh?
yeeeaaaahhh!!!
|| forbidden and irreversible spell my ass ||
... why am I shirtless-- OH SHIT
|| man it's a good thing that water is totally an amazing surface to cushion a fall from great heights ||
Ixrec — 07/13/2023 7:25 PM
at least one TotK speedrunner labels the final split "Hand Holding"
that entire last section was very reminiscent of usual traditional Zelda which was kinda nice, what with the super cinematic 'scripted' events and especially that
yeah, a big cinematic finale kinda has to be planned out on some level
one of my favorite parts of the current any% route is 3-cycling the dragon without a paraglider; that involves some seriously mad zonai wing skills
I like that each theme is distinctly different for each region
is nice
despite being part of the same theme I'm assuming
why does that look so intimate
oooh?

yaaay
yatta
alrighty, so that's done
GG
that's freakier than I was expecting
I thought you were done for tonight
so did I
to be fair imagine being the baddest motherfucker around for 10k years, literally be a Demon King
and then some random 4'11 blonde femboy smacks you around
I'd be pissed too
mothra killed me instantly
makes sense, it's kinda designed to be unintuitive
so far it's one of my favorites though
How long are those dungeons roughly?
The game seems longer than I thought
looks like I spent ~40 minutes on this dungeon before taking a break, and now it's been maybe another ~20
oh boy this boss is a bit nuts
I feel like I cheesed it by using the item the dungeon gave me
but this also feels like a cheese on cheese kind of fight
You think you cheesed by using the tools the game gave you?
I mean, cheese has always been a type of that lol
I was expecting the "prophecy" to be a little more helpfully specific than when a bad guy gets the Triforce a hero will show up but sure that tracks
Yeah not quite there yet in terms of storytelling I guess
Seeing as I have my life back again now that I finished TOTK I may as well try to translate any of the text you send this session
oh, well here's another random one then
I still haven't found dwarf 2
yeah definitely stopping there for tonight, I'm once again out of ideas on how to reach a dungeon or progress any sidequest
ゆくえ知れずのあいぼうが帰ってくりやあ、あんたの到もきたえてやれんだがねえ。。。
I'm sure I got something wrong though....
Bleh, I hate it when I find a cache of zonai things and my brain just shuts off on what to do with them
I like to glue rockets and springs to shields
This was probably my fave part of that final fight
This section was genuinely so good to play
I can't decide what to explore next aaa
Aaaalrighty, not gonna start playing this now obviously but glad to know it works great with only very minor possible audiovisual glitches/hiccups here and there
Great game
りやあ -> りゃあ and 到 -> 剣
but can you tell what it means?
I am convinced this guy's important but there's no way to get to him
...oh come on, you just pull on the giant pitchfork and it disintegrates somehow?
some of these necessary progression steps are squarely in the "rub every button and item on every square of the map" category
huh, this dungeon gave me the big key before a single small key
this feels like a trap
Powerful Glove getto
...apparently you aren't allowed to walk through some doors while carrying an object
oh, there is a way to throw bombs in this game... and they work on this cracked floor but not the previous 10 identical cracked floors
the number of progression-blocking guide-dang-its has really skyrocketed since dark temple
good boss fight though
I knew it! the frog was the other blacksmith
now the master sword is orange apparently
found the dark desert (dark swamp? swamp 2? western swamp?) and dungeon entrance all on my own; I happened to have already found the spell I needed for it, but even if I hadn't there were solid clues for it
hooray !
still wondering why that one gravestone was unpushable though
especially after the fortuneteller brought it up
Doomguy approved

Omg I love it lol
||Zelda: “Perfect.” shoves sword into bunny’s skull||

The forbidden popsicle
Agh I knew I had done something wrong
I kinda picked up something about someone being lost/coming back home but not the whole thing especially with my hiccups in the text there
"If only my partner of unknowable whereabouts would come home, I would be be able to strengthen your sword too, but..."
to be a tad overly literal for pedagogical purposes
Yeah, I think the first part I roughly got right despite that little hiccup (seriously those small versions of already existing characters are so annoying
) but the second part without the very important 'ken' it kinda stopped making sense
I gotta pay more attention when I try to draw the kanjis
it'll probably be a lot more fair when we get to LBW and have modern resolutions
Yeah that's already like, over 2 decades after this game
Luckily they also have LBW in american spanish!
awesome
It's usually pretty hard/annoying for latin americans to play games in spanish mostly because it wasn't until pretty recently that games started including latin american spanish text translations and even voice dubs rather than only having the option of european spanish
I've also heard games were (are they still?) absurdly expensive in many parts of latin america, to the point of piracy being effectively mandatory
ok done with work crisis, time to do the swamp of mystery(???) dungeon
speaking of modern advancements: telling me what things are called would be nice
uh, shouldn't you be in Final Fantasy
Wizzrobes !
oh that's what they used to look like
yes they used to look like farmers instead of KKK members
.addquote
I can't tell if I'm missing a key item for this dungeon
Yeah, it depends of course since there's a shitload of countries in this region and not one has the exact same situation and things are definitely getting a lot more accessible since even as little as 10 years ago which is part of the reason why piracy is so huge in here, but for example a PS5 digital edition which, from what I can read in PS's website, is $399 USD, in here it can go anywhere from something like $519 USD ($19,664 UYU) to $824 USD ($31,220 UYU)
never mind I just found a key
Brasil was notorious back when the PS4 came out because due to such heavy taxes and fees to import it to the country the base price of $400 went all the way up to $1845
Link's feet are in intense pain now but I got a second key
there's gotta be a spike-proofing item somewhere in this game
why would you do this
I'm going to assume it's a good thing that the entire screen is rumbling for several seconds because I lit all the braziers in two different rooms
victory jingle
yes it's a good thing
"Link, this is Sahasrahla. Four lights will open the way forward."
...thanks, I guess

take that tiny gap in the floor I probably could jump over in real life
lol, now I find the dungeon map
a... what?
well this is odd
considering the damage I just took, I think you've mixed it up with something else
this spawns a block apparently
You can place blocks on buttons
ok the block despawns if I go too far away from it
but yes I believe this is the first button in the game that must remain pressed and doesn't come with a nearby pushable object
Ahh the 'good' old times of having an MP bar
It took them until Skyward Sword to get rid of that
I'm glad we're past that lol
stamina is a good resource since it prevents you from holding sprint the entire effing game like in many games which have the option, and as a resource it just recharges on its own so it's never a blocker (except in the sense of a really tall wall being a blocker, like it should be)
the magic bar is ungreat because you need to spend magic to do useful stuff, but when you run out (and don't have a green/blue potion) you're just kinda stuck
oh
ok this must be a detail I didn't get from the Skyward videos I watched
Unless you experienced what it is you probably won't get it
the upside of dying and retracing your steps through half a dungeon
can I hookshot that?
yes!
ah that was the last small key
oh it's just a room full of rupees, and I'm maxed out already
so you don't need to find every key in this dungeon, I wonder how many other dungeons have a spare
I don't know how this thing works bioloigically, but clearly it needs to die
ugh not this BS lightning attack again
the designers really liked Return of the Jedi
wait
is the strat for this really to stand perfectly still and mash attack
wow, even the lightning stopped hitting me when I just didn't move
welp, if it works
hm, there's turtle rock again
is that part of death mountain or a place on the way to death mountain or what
I guess now I should look around Lake Hylia again, light and dark
I don't know a specific way to get into that dungeon, but the last time I checked was maybe 4 dungeons ago and there's only 2 left
Mmmmm I think you have one more left
finally got around to bottling some fairies
I was going by what the map says
and this is probably leaving out Ganon's Haunted Mansion of Ultimate Destiny or whatever it's called this time
...oh, that's how I get in
so that's at least 2 dungeons gated on dark rocks
i can tel you where a bottle is if you want

Oh you can do them in any order?
yeah but i want you to see my favourite location in the game
but 5 and 6 are both blocked on dark rock pickups, which requires the Powerful Glove inside 4
and I still have no idea how 7 works but I haven't done a hebra sweep in ages
atm I'm more interested in that gravestone
I see I see
penguins killed me
these guys are not as intimidating as their Twilight Princess versions
...huh... I wonder if you could theoretically go straight to the ''final'' dungeon without having to do the Ice Temple
it's funny how the stalfos from zelda 1 and 2 look more threatening than the adorable lttp stalfos
there's probably another twenty random things on the overworld I've missed too
I keep finding more heart pieces when I re-check places I've been before
I think it's exactly half
Oh yeah it is
Well you almost have a full second row of hearts, even better
I wonder if they actually made side quests and collecting these types of things a bit more intuitive and a bit clearer for the player as opposed to Zelda 1's extreme and ruthless vagueness about anything
oh yeah, if half of what I've seen about Z1 is true, LttP is lightyears ahead on intuitiveness
I do still have a list of annoyances that really needed more hinting, but like every other Zelda I've played it's a minority of the stuff in the game, nowhere near enough to ruin the experience (at most maybe one dungeon)
Remember how you mentioned having issues with Dark Souls before with stuff like getting lost or not being very clear where progress is meant to be?
Zelda 1 is kind of like that but even worse and with every single thing not just progress
the specific one I keep hearing is zero indication of which wall tile or bush tile to try destroying
while LttP uses a different wall texture
I'm sure a lot of hardcore fans would see stuff like that as handholding the player or handing the answer to you, I know because that's what a lot of Fromsoft fans told me once when I complained about similar stuff in Dark Souls
but yeah, that simple change already makes things so much better than just magically figuring out where this one specific tile can break on the screen
and yeah despite being better than zelda 1 in some regards it's still a 1991 game so I'm sure it has its quirks
yep, with the benefits of save states and a walkthrough for emergencies it's a pretty great experience
I wonder what your opinion with ALBW will be like, I still don't know much about that game asides from unfortunately some spoiler stuff that I had been exposed to years ago, but not much from the game itself and I'm assuming that it's gonna have a 'modern' 2D gameplay style so I wonder if you'll find it even better, I'm going into that game pretty much blind but you're gonna go into it with the lttp experience fresh in mind so you'll probably be able to notice the differences and improvements if there are any
and any callbacks or references too of course
To be fair Tunic is a lot more modern than ALBW but I haven't played Tunic so I can't comment much on that game
the main thing that I'm alluding to here is, aside from being an excellent Soulslike Zeldalike whatever, Tunic goes all-in on the idea that you know absolutely nothing at the start and have to figure out everything as you go along, like Z1, but with proper clues instead of silly pixel hunts
(I'm still mad I didn't solve the true ending puzzle on my own, it was 100% fair and I was so close)
ah there's the map
once again explored 2/3rds of the dungeon before finding the map
Ahhhh, well in that case yeah you'll have at least 1 more game than me under your belt to compare Tunic to, although I don't know how much lttp and albw go in on the idea of figuring out stuff on your own, I want to say alttp already was trying the more story driven -ish approach and adding a bit more dialogue and lore and especially a bit more direction overall
how am I not dead yet, I've been on low heart noise for this whole conversation lol
yeah LttP definitely made the right call putting main quest goals on the map
even a suggested order for the dark world crystals
being near-death buffs your stats and focus /s
Yeah, Z1 did not have that
OOT went with that even further by having you pretty much do exactly as the game tells you to do in the order the game tells you to do
(Something that Majora's Mask didn't do and it ends up feeling more like alttp with a nice blend of player freedom and a clear ''path'')
although my memory of OoT is needing a walkthrough seemingly every time I set foot outside a dungeon
I wonder if I'd do better at it (or MM) today
so far in LttP there've really only been 4 wtfs
it's okay
I know a lot of people never used a guide for Majora's Mask and are surprised to find out so many other people find it basically impossible without a guide
it still baffles me whenever people claim to have not used a walkthrough for games like that
aaaaaah dammit I forgot to fall through a different hole to get to the big chest
loop of shame time

as kids no less
and ded
As a kid you have a lot more patience to bang your head against a wall
good concrete example: one of the major regions in Tunic has an "intended" main entrance which I didn't find (or rather, figure out how to open) until nearly the very end of the game, but I found the secret back entrance very early, so I ended up doing that part mostly backwards and it just kinda let me
argh, ok I need to focus to get through this dungeon with any health left
correction: the destructible walls use a different wall texture, but the floors are still pixel hunts
back in dungeon 4 that was one of my 4 wtfs
here I got lucky
oh my god it's BLUE
ok time to leave the dungeon, stock up on potions, and then save state my way back down to the boss
I should replay Zelda in series order.
I don't think I have ever disliked any of them.
I can still beat Zelda 1 in under a hour.
naturally, I'm now messing up rooms I did perfectly on all previous attempts
I think that sounds fun and you should go for it
there we go, finally back at B6, and with full health this time
this dungeon also has a bonus supply room if you found every key
hm... perhaps fire rod
first try no potions
(which is not common for me and bosses in this game)
I just noticed I have exactly 666 rupees
ah, I think this is the first use of "courage" and "wisdom" next to each other
Fun fact the Ice Temple is considered one of the hardest dungeons in the game so yoku dekita !
oh really
I thought it was fairly straightforward compared to the last few
random thought
I remember reading somewhere that there was a flute in this game
is that English only, and they swapped the ocarina for a flute?
correct :flutternod:
yayy i love the blue tunic in this game
blue tunic in the earlier games is pretty dope, I like using them whenever the green is the default outfit (still hilarious to me that OOT's Zora and Goron tunics are just the same but with a different color but that's hardware limitations for ya, TP and BOTW did a more elaborate design for the Zora outfit which I like)
#flawless
''Fuck it, Link can take it''
Link in-game after hearing that:
oh, this must be what Cap was thinking of earlier
nice, that got me back through the spikes without any damage
maybe they really did want me to tank it
no you're supposed to use the cape but it's ok
oh
well
ok that would explain that one sign about a cape
still this got me no closer to the last dungeon
guess I'll explore the light world past eyeglass rock again
yep, that heart piece is still up there taunting me
OH
I didn't have the superglove last time I was here!
i have no idea what these little dragon fellas are
in my head I've been calling them winged goombas
They’re friends
they most certainly are not
''I do not like this heart piece, Zelda. Its smug aura mocks me, it's evil, Zelda!''
the wooden pegs up here don't like me
if you mean the three yellow circle spells, one of them is required to enter the mystery swamp(???) dungeon
yes
I've yet to come up with a use for them outside of that puzzle though
i cant remember if you can get the golden master sword yet
last time I spoke to the dwarves they just said nope that's the best we can do with it
yeah the dwarves don't do it
though their dialogue having actual choices in it made me very suspicious when they could do exactly one upgrade for me and nothing else
You gotta come back when you're a little mmmmmm, richer
when you have time go to Greedo in the dark world
lol, first thing in the dungeon is a message saying don't even try this without potions

but first, there's a whole chunk of dark mt hebradeath(???) that I can get to from here
wtf are those 8-bit firebreathing lynels
I love how adorable Lynels are in this era of Zelda
6 games
Zelda I, ALttP, i believe the oracle games?, ALBW, BotW, and TotK
ok i was one off
I'm gonna assume this castle having a rave party is Ganon's place
iforgor age of calmity 😔
from little teddy bears trying to adorably murder you to more muscular than Ganondorf and will literally gun you down with arrows if you look at them in the eye
oh this is fun
way ahead of you lol
murder him
huh, how do I get back to the right
oh that's my fault for picking up the skull
I see a bombable wall at the top but nothing to hook onto up there, hopefully that's a one-way exit from something else
HMMMMM

ok turtle rock time
I do have potions
ah, so this dungeon is firmly blocked on getting the somaria staff in dark dungeon 6
neat, that room requires you to walk backwards
took a minute to figure out how to do that
also firmly blocked on the fire rod from dark dungeon 3
and... 6 requires the glove from 4
and you can't get to anything without 1
so you could probably go here without doing 2 and 5, but that's about it (glitchless)
actually dungeon 2 / dark swamp's item was the hookshot, and that's necessary in a handful of places, particularly the entrance of... 6 I think? well one of them
5 is definitely skippable because it's the blue clothes that reduce damage
but seemingly the only one you can skip normally
you're supposed to be in a Mario game
Well skippable in the sense that you can complete the game without it but.... that dmg reduction helps...
yeah
although you probably still need the crystal right?
right, I think you need all 7 to finish the game regardless
I'm just wondering how flexible the ordering is
trying to make the full dependency lattice
ok wtf does this room want me to do
If you didn't need the crystals then it'd be fully skippable since (spoilers for the final dungeon) || you get the red tunic later which even further reduces damage and fully replaces the blue one too ||
Are you doing Link's Awakening after this?
the plan was LBW and probably stop there for Zeldas
(I'm not trying to complete the whole franchise)
LTTP and Link's Awakening are what set the Zelda franchise.
ok I think I'm actually stuck on this room, I can't tell if there was a key hiding somewhere else or these chain chomps are vulnerable to something other than the 10+ items I did try
oooh this is one of those "push every block until one of them does a thing" rooms
yeah that's still dumb
I myself do plan to play Link's Awakening's remake a bit further down the line maybe, just because it seems to be relatively short and people say very good things about it so I want to at least try it out, but for now I'm just gonna chill from Zelda after those 140+ hours in TOTK and enjoy ALBW once I get to it
part of the reason why I didn't pick up Link to the Past right now since not only am I not hugely interested in the game thus making it very doubtful I'd have the interest to complete it but also I've just been playing too much dang Zelda
yeah, LttP is a much chunkier game than the overworld map makes it look
At the time people were not used to the length of SNES games.
So the twist when you storm the castle floored a lot of people.
if I hadn't played OoT and TP that might've gotten me too
oh turtle rock is getting ridiculous
It’s turtles and rocks all the way down
died to a completely different mario enemy
what do you call that critter which is a stack of ~4 orange spheres you have to knock out one by one?
Spiney
also I'm assuming that the version you're playing is the original nes right?
snes, but yes I'm emulating the Japanese (Rev 2) SNES ROM
oh yeah I can tell from the UI I probably didn't even need to ask
I'm just asking since the port of the game for the GBA adds something extra that's pretty neat but I'll show you that after you're done so you don't gotta worry about that
I did read up on snes vs gba differences before choosing this so odds are I saw that somewhere, but I'm not sure which thing you might mean
ooooh... this is one of those dungeons ||with multiple overworld entrances/exits that can't be reached any other way||
I have high hopes for the final dungeon's big chest item
lightning shield... that parries beams?
pfff this shield is almost as big as Link
is that what the Mirror Shield is called in jp?
mirror shield is epic
BE CAREFUL BTW
you know how at some shops you can buy a replacement fighter's shield?
if yoy buy it with the fire or mirror shield it replaces it
or a replacement red shield
yeah I figured I should not buy the 50 one after I bought the 500 one
I’m amused by this because I’ve seen this exact mistranslation before
is this turtle rock
yep
what an iconic dungeon
ok that room was like navigating a mass transit system with nothing but a pen light
''Kagami no tate o mitsuketa zotsu?''
I wonder why they put it in katakana
I'm doing a Wind Waker randomizer where I chose "no starting sword". At the moment I'm 215/285 item locations in with 0/4 swords.
Did you read that incorrectly or does 'lightning' sound similar to kagami?
ive cleared 3 dungeons with my bare fists ✊
I assume the kanji 鏡 is considered either too hard for the target age range, or (especially in this case) too many strokes for a pixelated font to handle
ah yeah that'd be a hard one to pixelize
I did read that completely incorrectly, that was just a pure derp; kagami and kaminari are not that similar
no no I'm still on turtle rock B2 lol
I probably want to look around the overworlds a bit before ganon anyway, we all know there's stuff I've missed
definitely not finishing the game tonight
You know I actually thought you'd already be at least finished before I finished TOTK and you're actually kind of there, but to be fair you've pretty much binged the game in like less than a week, it's barely been 3 days since you started the game
it does surprisingly seem longer than I thought it'd be
same
on b3 but with both potions spent
interestingly, B2 has this random opening to the overworld from which you can't really get anywhere
but I might be able to do a light world potion restock with this
ah no just getting back here in the light world requires world swapping
welp we're doing the usual save state dungeon retrace then
LttP Link is cute
Going from TOTK to a classic Zelda must be annoying whenever you see your hearts down and think ''oh I'll just cook/eat some food'' and when you open the menu you have that ''wait..'' moment
I know I'm gonna miss the convenience of cooking a dozen radish/truffle dishes for the ridiculous extra hearts
well, I tend to prefer the simplicity of just a few health potions over ten thousand cooking ingredients
I agree only because a lot of times I found cooking to be redundant since a lot of times I'd have no real incentive to cook a bunch of ingredients
pretty much
also potions are kind of an iconic aspect of any medieval adventure game too
Potion seller, I need your strongest potions!
there we go
what's this?
aaaaaand it's dead (took a few tries and potions)
I think fire and ice rod are both mandatory for that?
this damsel looks familiar somehow
ZELDA !
might as well take a peek inside even if I'm not doing this tonight
yup, this looks like the right place
i highly recommend getting the golden master sword before Ganon's Tower
I will definitely run around the overworlds a bit to see if I can find anything else of value
if I can't discover the golden sword on my own I'll try without it, like any other missable item
starting to notice just how many things from lttp there are in oot
but it's so cool....
probably the biggest thing is the overall structure of three easy dungeons, fail to beat bad guy, unlock alternate version of world, more than three harder dungeons, actual bad guy defeat
and the enemies and the tunics you can get and the princesses in crystals...
although the orange master sword didn't seem to catch on
yeeeeaah OOT has some neat weapons but no upgrades to anything you have or anything like that, overall you'll mostly be using the master sword exclusively for most of any zelda game
Biggoron Sword !
Skyward Sword kinda has the upgrades but that's since that game is the origin of how the master sword gets created or transformed into I guess
Biggoron is not an upgrade it's a separate sword entirely
I mean it's the best sword in the game but you can't use your shield since it's a two handed sword it's not a special state for the master sword or anything
just a really big sword
it's kinda sad that they made a whole game about the Master Sword's origin, and one of the things it's most famous for is the Master Sword being somehow more annoying than Navi was

Skyward Sword in general is a pretty big gigantic missed opportunity
and bad execution in general
I think it's probably by far the game that has the most/worst issues attributed to traditional Zelda formula
I've watched some thorough videos about what it did right and wrong
i like Fi
(if I had any motion controls here I might consider pirating it just to see what that's like, but nope)
remind me, have you played nearly every Zelda?
Skyward sword has booomb boooowlinggg
I think that's a gif from the video I watched
It's from sequelitis
me ?
yeah
Even Twilight Princess (which nowadays people like but back then you'd pretty much have to defend your stance if you ever said it was your favourite Zelda) people would say that its worst sin is just being overall pretty by the books and standard when it comes to its structure and story (although I dunno why people said that considering Midna is still one of the most unique companions and arguably the protagonist) but Skyward Sword set the community on fire for years
BOOOOOOOMB BOOOOOOOOOWWWWLLL
TP does rely on OoT too hard, but the game's biggest problem is how slow it starts and there are too many dog sections, and that the dog never gets more interesting.
I'm probably still the weirdo for liking TP sooooooooo much more than OoT that TP's one of the few dozen games I've ever replayed and OoT I never did half the sidequests in
no, ive only played Zelda I, II, ALttP, Link's Awakening, BotW, and TotK all the way through
Nowadays people like TP a lot more, I personally always had it as my favourite
my favourite is LttP or TotK
wait, so none of the 3Ds before BotW?
nope
that's interesting
TP does rely a lot on OOT but that's because it's a direct sequel
I think it's distinct enough that it stands on its own as a story and game without requiring OOT, playing OOT just gives it that extra context
it adds those moments of ''I clapped when I saw it!!! I know what that is!!!''
BotW and TotK have similar design philosophies to Zelda I which is probably why i like them so much. ive tried OoT and MM before and nothing really clicked with me
sequels in general are really hard to evaluate because you'll always have people who want the old game but with its bad parts fixed and other people who wanted something radically different
you can say that about remakes too
I'm almost done with my MM Rando run. Just have to do stone tower temple and go to the moon
da moon
yeah, with video games, the distinction between a sequel and a remake is often a minor detail
LA remake is almost 1-1 the same except for a few qol changes since the Gameboy only had 2 buttons
unlike most other media
especially with the older Zeldas where story (as opposed to world/setting) is almost an afterthought
how can you say that when the seven maidens lore dump you every time you save one /hj
I finished my MM Rando in 12 hours
how'd you like it?
It was a fun challenge
