Kobo is streaming on bilibili, China's equivalent to YouTube.
This is a big deal because of Hololive's marred past with China. A few years ago, Akai Haato and Kiryu Coco had similar streams in which they went over their audience metrics, pointing out how many fans came from various areas around the world. Now, Google, as an American company, recognizes Taiwan as its own independent nation and marks it as such. Many other nations do so as well, but only on paper as the US would quickly cut ties with anyone who recognizes Taiwan as sovereign territory of the PRC. Haato and Coco made the "mistake" of identifying their Taiwanese section of their audience while not mentioning that Taiwan was a part of China.
Chinese fans went nuts.
Harassment campaigns, bot raids, threats, you name it, flooded Haato and Coco's chats, so much so that they had to turn chat off. Then it got more official, as Cover suspended the two talents for 3 weeks and had them issue formal apologies for "forgetting" that Taiwan was a part of the PRC. This also led to the dissolution of the HololiveCN branch of Hololive and the shuttering of the Chinese offices of Cover.
Understandably, many fans, especially western fans, got pissed at this, seeing it as Cover just bending over to a restrictive government's demands over something petty. It didn't help that when Cover itself issued official apologies over everything that happened, the apologies in English and Japanese did not address exactly what happened while the one in Mandarin went out of its way to mention exactly what the mistake was.
SO, to now see that a Hololive talent is streaming in a pretty China-exclusive space is ruffling some feathers.
