That's what happened to Frontiers. One of the original leakers (who turned out to be legit) got his hands on a very early preview of the game, and there were a few different things, such as having a "ghost girl" (who wasn't Sage, apparently). He also described the gameplay as "utterly miserable".
Of course, this was the build that Iizuka said was eventually scrapped completely and redone from the ground up, resulting in the game we have now, and considering the extremely positive reception Frontiers got from the majority of players, we can safely say it was the right decision.
Btw, Steam reviews are at 9,397, and 95% of them are positive. That's almost unheard of for a mainline Sonic game (No, Mania is not technically a mainline game, despite playing like one of the classics).

As cool as these are to see I generally really don't like this sort of live-service-y stuff at all, Frontiers already feels like an unfinished game as it is so it doesn't really help but I guess the fact that it's free doesn't make it nearly as bad as if it were something you had to pay for
the prospect of not only having playable Tails Knuckles and Amy is interesting though, I don't think a Sonic game has done that, at least well, in a while, especially playable Amy, and they all seem to be having their own campaigns too
I thought they were going to do an Adventure 3 sort of thing in the next game with each campaign being all of the journeys set up for these characters but maybe they're just gonna do that right now

I do have a copy without the audio from mlp but I personally like it with the characters talking, I did notice the music kind of clashing but I tried to minimize that by balancing the music to drown out as much of the original bgm but not make the voices inaudible

So, I just got confirmation on something that I had suspected for a while now: the song "One Way Dream" from Frontiers is, in fact, a message from Sonic Team to the fans. You know what, I dig this new voice for her. It's perfect. It has that sly and "sexy" tone that Rouge has had since the very beginning, without being exaggerated, and yet she can also be taken seriously (unlike her current and past voices).

Actually, the only one who lacked a mouth was Mephiles. All the rest had mouths, they were just hidden half the time under their muzzles.

Mephiles will never return. For one thing, that would acknowledge that Sonic 06 existed, which Sonic Team and Sega do not want to do (they've cut out any mention of it past Generations, and the only reason why it was included in Generations was because that was a celebration of Sonic's history). Anything past that game had no inclusion whatsoever.
Second reason: it wouldn't make sense canonically. Mephiles and Iblis were part of Solaris, and Solaris was effectively killed at the end of the game before it became Mephiles and Iblis, thus erasing all three of them from the timeline and ensuring they would never exist.
The only reason how Mephiles was able to exist in the Archie comics for his singular cameo appearance was because the Time Cops were able to find him, trap him in a prison that existed beyond time (sort of like the organization from Loki), and hold him there him for ruining his timeline before Sonic and Elise were able to extinguish the flames of Solaris. And yes, Archie is weird as f`ck. And even then, the Archie comics got rebooted, thus erasing him and the Time Cops from existence, and then Archie got cancelled, thus forming the new IDW continuity.

Overall, I'd say that the IGN review is on-point. A couple of the episodes feel a little filler-y and the pacing is a bit off, but even then they have some great character moments for Sonic & friends, and, well, let's just say that the trailers lied just a little bit with some things. And yes, the ending is a bit abrupt. A little too abrupt, I'd say, but it's still a huge cliffhanger.

I mean, they are alternate versions of the characters. They're supposed to be different than what we know. That's the whole point.
Sonic and Shadow are the only ones who aren't "changed", and the whole show is about Sonic growing and discovering more about himself while also fixing his mistakes. As for Shadow, he's got a reason to be pissed, he just doesn't know the explanation as to why things are all different.
Yeah, their portrayal in Frontiers is by far superior, but I'm more forgiving for the show because it is set in an alternate, "simpler" continuity, and is also designed around the fact that the characters will act different to how they are normally.
But the "prime" versions of the crew are all good portrayals overall. Knuckles is still a headstrong, snarky rival warrior; Amy is still a caring, cheerful girl who follows Sonic's lead but can take charge when needed; Rouge is still a treasure hunter and a great fighter; Tails is still a gadgeteer genius (who isn't afraid!); Eggman is still Eggman; Sonic is still Sonic; Big is still Big; and Shadow is...still Shadow, just even more of a loner than usual.

I feel like some drops to recover boost would be great too because the entire fight you're boosting and if you're not boosting then you're not making any progress at all, it's very weird to ask that of the player if boost is a limited resource
either do that or give me infinite boost like when I'm fighting Asura's because it shouldn't be running out

Considering how well they did with what few resources they had, I think they truly deserve any praise they do get. Yes, the game isn't perfect. But they TRIED, damn it. They tried so hard to make it good. And it is good, but it could've been so much better.
Hell, even one of the other writers (besides Ian Flynn) said that they wanted to make the ending something truly grand, but they had to rush everything because of a limited budget. He straight-up apologized that he couldn't give us the story he knew that they could've given us, even though it wasn't his fault.

I will give extremely high praise for the writing and music, and fairly high praise for the open world segments, because this is their first attempt and they did pretty well, all things considered, even if there's LOTS of improvements to be made, both big and small.
No praise for the cyberspace levels, though. They're ultimately not necessary to complete the story, if you know how to do things, but they're...not nearly as good as Generations or Colors.

Generations and Colors were by no means bad. They were in fact excellent games.
Forces wasn't bad on a technical level, it was just rushed to shit and was so blitheringly BLAND.
And Lost World was..................a thing.
But what all of them had in common was shoddy writing. Colors had the best of it, being genuinely funny at points (its Eggman announcements are still the funniest shit ever put into a Sonic game), but even then it still suffered from bad story dialogue.
Generations barely even had a story. Lost World was..........a thing. And Forces was basically the edgy 13 year old who tried to write the coolest shit but failed so badly.

But I do still hold the same opinion, the story is good, but that's about it for me, I'm not going to say it's the best narrative in Sonic media but it's also not the worst, most of the time you're kind of just seeing characters chat and talk and most of the really important events happen pretty much near the end of the game, I kind of thought there would be a lot more with the whole ''your friends lost their memories and got transported into a digital dimension'' thing
The way they 'bring back' Sonic is still a massive copout and an extreme deus ex machina, there was no point to making Sonic look like he was going to crumble into dust only for him to be just fine literally like 2 seconds later
Luckily that's one of the few things I can point out are ''bad'' about the story, I like the eggman voice files but I feel bad about that being optional because it has cool shit and it's kinda hidden away in the fishing minigame of all places?

I played around with the enhanced physics mod for Frontiers
It's good, it's really good, it feels incredible, but you can tell the game wasn't meant for this
It's very easy to lose control of Sonic, but that just kinda encourages you to know how to control him, and I haven't tinkered around with the speed settings so I don't know if that would help, but sometimes some jump pads or rails can get a bit buggy, you can fly off someplace you totally didn't intend to go to and it kinda sucks, but that's just because it's a mod that forces these physics to be in place, it wouldn't be a thing if they were there from the beginning
I haven't encountered any problems with cyberspace yet, in contrary, I've found them much more enjoyable now
The best part about the mod is jumping carries momentum so I would jump from some rails into a higher part of the map that without the mod I would've never be able to gotten to, the fact that my double jumps carry momentum and I can boost in the air means I can go practically anywhere I want to go if I built up enough speed

I mean, the IDW comic literally shows that if Sonic really wanted to, he could utterly annihilate big bosses like these without breaking a sweat. In literal seconds ("No time to be flashy." --- IDW Super Sonic, after wiping the floor with a beefed-up Zavok in like three small panels). I still think it's possible for Eggman to be alive. Stone was able to survive the robot's destruction after all with nary a scratch, even though he fell with the Death Egg Robot's head and slammed hard on the ground, which would've normally killed anyone else, so it wouldn't surprise me if Eggman used that glove thingy to call upon some flying robots to carry him to safety in the chaos.

the game is very-VERY sonic inspired, the main characters were originally Sonic OCs, the head developer was even making a sonic game with said OCs but decided early development to make it more of an original game instead. Freedom Planet (and FP2) is really good gameplay wise, and an amazing soundtrack, I highly recommend it as its own standalone video game to play
