what the heck haha
Slippi doesn't need a CRT to achieve CRT-like latency, just get an overclockable adapter and a 120+ Hz display
it's harder on macOS though, that OS is not very friendly to low-latency gaming unfortunately
LG G5 and later can also go up to 165 Hz, C4/G4/C5 and later up to 144 Hz
Why did he say “wild” like that?
Ooh. 20% off E33 to celebrate the one year release anniversary
For those who come after haven't played it yet

A year later and I still haven't finished it😭
well Finnish it then smh
To quote Zelgius, "Interesting maneuver"
Imagine me, a year later and I still haven''t bought it
Wait it's been out for a year? Man
remember that Expedition 33 will be delisted from all stores on March 3 2033, so be sure to play it before it becomes lost medium
It doesnt feel like its been out for a year
What
what game should i play don't say Elden Ring i'm mad at it right now
Halo
Lego
Lego Halo
portal
Halo
Half life 1
Lego'nt
Legone
Oh dang. E33 has hit 8 million copies sold
i wont be satisfied until it sells 33 million copies
Sadly unlikely to happen

they made discord emojis and made them available to all!
fuck i forgot i was on the Library mission in Halo 1
i think the install was bad because whenever i loaded up Halo 1 it just crashed instantly
annoying
I'll just need to buy 25 million copies
Meh, I gotta buy a 4 TB storage medium so that I can get my computer fixed fully
And possibly a window AC unit because I don't trust my apartment complex to fix mine
it feels like it's been out half a year because that's when I played it
Well it's 20% off right now!
But I need 160 to get 4TB Hard drive to act as temp storage
I specifically played it after its been 33 days since it came out

Download Dead as Disco demo

That was close
If I stubbed my toe, I would've died😭
I love that you can regain lost health by damaging enemies
Epic gaymer moment
Lelo
interesting future release i found while trawling through Steam

that's basically Doom 2016/Eternal glory kills 😛
there is a perk you can unlock so that regular kills drop some health too (not as much)
In bloodborne?
Oh wait no, in Doom
wrecker activities

What game is this?
Chrono Gear: Warden of Time
pretty fun, you can even pet the dawg
Looks cute, I think I might pick it up
I recommended it to someone who is into VTubers
I only have a passing interest in Vtubers overall (some I like, others are meh), but the game itself looks fun
fair
so what do we call Jerma's location? the uncanny cave?
exactly
I did try a few times, but I largely agree.
I generally watch people for reacions and when like, the person don't really have a face it's kind of difficult to enjoy those.
Technology just isn't there for it to work for me.
I've always reacted more to words than faces, which I assume is one of the reasons it works for me
It doesn't feel as genuine at least
it's been good so far, had to fiddle with keybinds for a bit, but im pretty picky about that sorta thing. otherwise its nice to play through
it has a lot of the vtubers from the Hololive group, even if youre not familiar with them, I think the game does a decent job at capturing their character quite well. takes great advantage of the "lore" these vtubers have and you might get a good gist of what they may be like
It's definitely not the artstyle because I can relate to anime characters just fine, it's the barrier between the model and the human
oh my god it's Clownpiss!

granted the ones I watch the most are the ones that feel more genuine to me, with either more expressive models, or at least it feels like their models successfully express how the person emotes
they're the same person, you can't convince me otherwise
I've seen a few Fauna streams before she graduated. She was nice, reminded me a lot of Fluttershy.
And I know Poppy is a big Vtuber fan. He likes Gawr Gura/Saba and a few others.
oh yea Fauna is very much Fluttershy coded
I rly like her Minecraft streams
she still streams under a new channel, Nimi Nightmare
Oh, I thought she hadn't created a new channel yet
Let's try this again...
yeah, it can be a bit tricky to keep track
bad guys in media be like
new high :3
When was the last time you played it? Pretty decent patch with new content and stuff
Since christmas, I kinda got spooked from playing further because the computer crashed for the first time since I've had it during a run and then it happened again while playing TOTK and haven't really figured out why they happened, I had it crash with Battlefront 2 which didn't happen at all before but still couldn't figure out what was the cause and everything's working fine but I did get spooked so I haven't been playing much in this time, I also got busy too so I've mostly been playing older shorter games before going back to stuff like Hades and just hoping that those crashes don't happen anymore
I got as far as fighting Cronos just the one time so far
you got farther than me
I haven't been able to get back to the Cronos area since that time but I did boot it up a couple weeks ago it says March 11, I don't remember if I tried going for a run or not but I do remember I did take the chance to just get some upgrades I think and do a bunch of crafting that I completely missed last time I left off
I appreciate the continuous support but it does kinda give me the feeling of ''can I play the game now? or do I wait 4 more months?'' since they are updating the game with pretty significant amounts of content
doesn't affect me but it does affect people who already finished the game and probably feel like they're missing out now
at some point you just have to decide to play the game and be okay with missing future updates
I haven't touched E33's DLC since I fully completed it before the DLC was even announced
That, or it could have been EOLed and there won't be any future updates (e.g., Kerbal Space Program or Starbound)
(Although then you need to worry about mod updates
)
I also never got around to playing Hollow Knight's Pale Court mod
I should make time for Silksong DLC though
I was considering the idea of buying Silksong but I already got made fun of for playing Hades 2 without playing 1 first
Hollow Knight, just like SOTN, is one of those games I never stopped hearing about but still knew nothing about them and never went out of my way to play
well, I guess now I scratched off SOTN from that list
some sequels do assume you've played the first game, and those are both examples
in Silksong's case the stories are detached enough for it to be fine, but the difficulty is likely to smush anyone who didn't play Hollow Knight first
-# it nearly smushed me
it smushed me in HK
i did play Hollow Knight and Silksong smushed me
tbh I'm still not quite sure how I managed to beat the final boss in a reasonable amount of attempts
I guess technically I'm still early enough in Hades 2 I can't really say to what extent it assumes I know 1
Honestly, before this patch the game was in a finished state. It got this stuff because it finally launched on PS5/XBox, and they added a post-endgame thing that doesn't really give any real rewards (just cosmetic), just a different spin on a run. There's also a bit more dialogue.
sci fi tank battling game! Looks interesting, and i hope it's got better monetisation than the usual suspects haha

I still need to finish up HK
I'm so close to the true ending, I just keep getting distracted with other games
this looks like a more tactical Tanki Online
what is Tanki Online? I've not really played many tank games apart from the 2D ones haha
its a russian sporty tank fighting game where you pick a turret and a chassis and then shoot the enemy teammates while doing objectives
ah neat!
this is my current tank, its a superheavy with a mid-long range turret. also has a homing missile launcher.
oooh cool,
theres hover hulls and tracked hulls, hovers have driftier movement but can move in all directions. tracked hulls have better turn speed and much better control over their movement, and better speed overall.

What in the kentucky fried hell is that!?
All I saw was a cockpit and a worm with a face that looked like it crawled out of my worst dreams
enemy :3
it's called the face
it's the worse cousin. of the mass
the game is called white knuckle.
I suggest you go blind besides what you saw
this game will try your patience. your will to live.
and your temperament to repeated close calls
I cannot think of a worse recommendation for a game than "I suggest you go blind" and with no indication as to what the game even is. I genuinely can't.
besides typing that currently. there is a steam page
half the fun of the game is the random shit you encounter.
but basic description is.
climbing roguelike.
there is also worse. spoiling every single detail. leaving no story element unturned immediately.
If only there was a happy medium between these two extremes
"climbing roguelike" is close. Is it a climbing horror roguelike? That's kind of what I get from the screenshots. (Also reply pings are not needed)
ye i think it's spooky
it is.
this solves all the problems
good luck.

I almost got fucked over by the USB sd card reader again, mid transfer too which made it even more nerve wracking but I managed to disconnect it in time before it started connecting and disconnecting over and over so the files were fine, then after I connected it again on the same USB port nothing happened and I transferred everything else without issue, which makes it even more infuriating when this stuff just happens randomly, not being able to pinpoint the issue and it happening and then not happening is so infuriating
I might just get a USB cable for PSP file transferring purposes, or a better SD card reader, a nice high quality one to avoid the problem entirely. I know it's not the USB port itself cause I've had periferics connected to them without issue and even transferred stuff to hard drives and thumb drives without any problems at all before
worse of all, I hear this Bubsy game is actually good too
got a hat and im positively bloody
For Khorne
also found spiked armor on a zombie
was bit
but i have a trait that makes me immune
i think she's just sick
Is that a modded trait?
Ah ok yeah
Well, that ends my run. Some reason there like 500 zombies in the house
the corpse of my character in the bedroom
cute girls doing cute things anime plays in the background

Project Zomboid is so bizarre to me, I remember way back in the day like 2014 I was so obsessed with wanting to play it, it seemed so cool to me and I never had the money or a computer good enough to run it, it's always been one of those games I've always wanted to get but never did so it's always been this super mysterious thing to me, and the gameplay was unlike anything I had seen up until that point, I always compared it and put it in the same category as DayZ as one of those immersive simulation zombie games where you have to really care about every single detail you'd otherwise not care about in a videogame
and then I look at it now all these years later.. and it looks exactly the same as it did back then
except now I guess it's 3D and people can make goth girls in it now too
Early stage development video for Project Zomboid;
New blood system in action.

this is the Project Zomboid that lives in my mind
project zomboid development goes super slowly haha
i'm still waiting on b42 to be done lol
Project Zomboid b42 unstable is pretty stable now
Compared to like the first release of b42
that's good to hear
That's some super old zomboid huh
Ouch
This game will end up on the Beamng development cycle
Atleast Zomboid isn't in early access like Beam
Don't worry 2014 is only like 12 years ago
I think you always had the ability to make goth girls, Mods just make it possible for more clothing options
The blood system seems to be the same one for a decade
Do you think they'll do any major changes from current unstable to release?
ah yeah. how are the new crafting setups and such? Are they fun to use?
I've been trying to find a place to settle down so i didn't have a chance to do crafting yet
I think it's cool though
fair enough. I never really live long, so I'm not sure how much i'll get to use it hahah.
it sounds awesome for wilderness starts though
or like, any modding setups
aye aye
I wonder if there'll be a new set of "fallout inspired" tech or workbenches
it seems like it'd be a cool way to build out modding weapons and the like
oh, some of those have updated already, whoa
Scrap weapons and the ability to make your own fuel and bullets would be crazy tho
yeah yeah, that'd be neat!
~~madmax project zomboid ~~
Yeah they take years to make updates lol, b41 was around for several years before they even talked about 42
By build 50 i would be dead
If i recall, 41 was multiplayer
Which just ahows how long its been around
Oh 41 multiplayer was reworked, but had been around since 24
Mb
Yea 41 adding multiplayer feels too wrong
Cars were in b39
Wtf so people were walking from b1 to b38
I couldn't even imagine walking from west point to rosewood
Yes
I think the map was smaller back then, they started with muldrah
Loiville was relatively recent, i think 41
well it also got a big change with the skyscrapers, those are neat

PS: consider enabling anisotropic filtering in Dolphin's graphics options to get nicer textures 😛
also relevant: https://github.com/dolphin-emu/dolphin/pull/14578
it's not included yet, but Dolphin will eventually support HDR output for a big portion of games
it won't work on every game due to how some of them render things (e.g. it's not supported in Wind Waker), but it works in a surprisingly large number of games

yay, low-latency wireless out of the box
I'll take your entire stock!
I'm unimpressed with the design. Doesn't look comfortable to hold
**Wait, what is Grip Sense? **
Grip Sense is what we're calling the new input that uses capacitive touch sensors to sense if you're holding the handles. There is one sensor in each handle of the Steam Controller. The primary use for this is to enable/disable Gyro quickly so you can reset your position when you get to the edge of your comfortable zone (called "ratcheting"). Kind of like when you reach the end of your mousepad and pick up your mouse to recenter it.
You can even map Grip Sense like any other button! We love using it to pull up menus, weapon wheels, and even pause the game when you put the controller down.
Shouldn't be different from using an XBox controller. There's just some thumb pads there, where it'd normally be open.
it looks comfortable to me but i may just have big hands
the Duke
this sounds really interesting, one of my gripes with gyro aiming is that recentering isn't as frictionless as I'd like
(frictionless... after all, a gamepad with gyro is a frictionless mouse)
LTT already has a video about it
I will probably get one for Godot purposes when it's in stock (it'll probably be out of stock for a bit)
but keep in mind it needs Steam Input to work, so non-Steam games must be launched through Steam to work
hopefully the community will figure out workarounds for this, this is going to be a hassle for gamedevs otherwise. Engines could add game entries to Steam, but this requires Steam to be closed so the entry can be seen on launch

I guess I'll stick with my Xbox controller

Hm… maybe. But I’m probably just going to stick with my Xbox and PS5 controllers.
looks a bit awkward to handle
Honestly it looks like it might be more confortable than the first one, which I rather despised.
Like the Steam Deck, appearances may be deceiving
It probably doesn't feel much different from the Steam Deck or an Xbox controller
But that's just a guess, of course..
Yeah, I like my Steam Deck so much, I'll probably get one of these.

Weapon wheel on L4D2?
Its probably a Steam Input API
Harvey dent warning? I don’t know? still have no idea where to put tomodachi stuff lmao
Oh my god, you can activate and de activate the gyro with the grip sensors which is like a thing a lot of people don't bother using gyro for because they don't want gyro aiming to be activated 100% of times on every game
That's actually legitimately genius
on the Steam Deck you can have it so gyro only activates when you touch the right stick it's cool
Every time I see someone use gyro controls, my wrists begin to scream.
If you're twisting and turning your wrists around using gyro you're using it wrong, you really don't need extreme hand adjustments to use it well
I have no idea how to even use it correctly
the problem is when people assume it's used for everything the same way they assume Wii games used motion for everything (which some did and it was annoying), when you mix it with normal gameplay it's legitimately the best way to play, that's why Resident Evil 4 is still the best on the Wii
Tried it once, absolutely hated it
Thankfully it also has dual trackpads. I'd probably use those if the game requires constant precise aiming as opposed to occasional
Yeah the trackpads look good
Well, hopefully with the new steam controller people will give it an honest try this time, because being able to do something like only using gyro aiming when you're aiming a gun in a videogame is the best way to use gyro, for every other movement you play as normal and only adjust your aim like you would with a mouse with gyro
I probably should watch a tutorial
Maybe when I get some free time
I have the Switch Pro controller as well
I ended up getting some refurbished Classic Controllers for my nephew's Wii but before I did that I did actually play a bit of RE4 with the wiimote and nunchuk and it was so much more intuitive than I was expecting, when this sort of stuff is properly supported and designed it really is super comfortable to play with
Wait, you aren’t supposed to move the controller like a mad scientist?

Patreon support: https://www.patreon.com/Nerrel
Discord: https://discord.gg/g9kkJpQ
The original video: https://youtu.be/binPB4YbWmM
Even if you don't particularly care about the topic they're at least fun and really well made videos to watch just really quick
it's an overlay injected by Steam Input, it's not part of the game
CS:GO has an actual weapon wheel (added in Panorama IIRC) along with HL2 (Steam Deck update) and CS2
I mean..... if it works!
before watching the videos...
I'm like 99% sure this is entirely the fault of the gaming industry for pushing out so many bad uses of motion controls, and by the time actually useful gyro aiming was invented, they never explained it, so I ended up playing several games which had the feature and even mistook one or two of them for having "ridiculously inaccurate aiming" because I had no idea I was gyroing
it's like how people basically correctly have negative impressions of crossover fanfics because 99% of them are terrible, even though it has also been done well in rare cases
I liked the Wii motion controls cuz I was 16 and not 36
I think Metroid Prime 3 is the only game I've ever personally played where the motion controls actually mattered, and there they were pretty great (probably in part because the motion component was mostly for "supplemental precision aiming", very similar to the gyro aiming of Switches and normal-shaped modern controllers)
On a super big nutshell that's pretty much what these videos boil down to it's essentially ''gamers don't hate motion controls/gyro, what they hate is when developers cram it into every single aspect of a game making it a chore to play, when they're well implemented nobody cares because they don't even notice it''
on a very, very big nutshell
tbh these videos feel like they're ignoring a lot of the reasons people formed these associations. Especially the statement that "Microsoft and Sony haven't been known to push players out of their comfort zones" feels like this guy completely missed the era where Microsoft in particular was infamous for pushing terrible Kinect games that made their entire "core gamer" player base feel abandoned, reinforcing all the negative stereotypes to such a degree that it became genuinely rational to assume a game with motion controls was some ill-conceived shovelware.
i can confirm that was how MS felt in that era
my new Kinect Halo game will make you feel like Master Chief
I've never owned an Xbox, but that era of Xbox really felt like they turned their back on their core demographic
ive never owned an Xbox either
same
always been a Nintendo guy until i got my steam deck
Kinect felt like "lmao what is this?" a cheap imitation to cash in on Nintendo
PS3 also had a kinect-like thing too didn't it?
yeah it had the weird wiimote thingies with the balls on top
The Xbox 360 era was peak console gaming for me. By the time the Kinect hype was going on, I'd already mostly jumped ship to PC because of all the usual reasons "AAA" felt stagnant and the PC indie boom became a genuine alternative.
Yeah, but it wasn't pushed to the dgree that Kinect was
Both MS and Sony were trying to cash in on that whole Wiimote idea in different ways at the time but neither really ''got'' it
yes, PS Move was similar to Kinect around the same time but didn't engender nearly as much ill will for a bunch of reasons
The Kinect was way worse but both ended up contributing to people's bad association with motion controls
what games did Kinect and PS Move even have
MS felt like they were shifting from a core gamer demographic to a family deamographic
I'm not aware of any noteworthy ones, which was kinda my whole point

It's kind of sad how far Xbox has fallen

but these days the consoles are just less interesting all around
Switch and Steam Deck have the obvious portability hook
Well with any luck they'll bounce back a little bit after that whole rebrand they did recently but.... probably not

but other than that, why would you not game on a PC? there aren't even that many exclusives that anyone cares about any more

Supposedly that's unintentional, form the article itself. I guess time will tell
What's unintentional is them revealing it too early. You don't accidentally make DRM
Well, that sucks if they are implementing always online DRM to digitally bought games
Needing an internet connection just to play on console is weird af
Xbox One tried to do that IIRC
microsoft will probably take this video down, for damage control like the other Don Mattrick video's out there with this interview.

Honestly, I'd be quite happy just sticking with an Xbox 360 nowadays
I started playing Old World last night (well, I got through some of the tutorials). So far it looks like a reasonably well-executed Civilization-style 4X, but...I've grown to be less interested in this type of historically-themed 4X than I was back when Civilization III or Civilization IV came out.
Fundamentally, the fun for me from playing historical (as opposed to fantasy or sci-fi) 4X/grand strategy games comes from a more simulationist aspect of having to handle something like the real historical situation and hopefully doing better than the real historical leaders in that situation.
You can munge Civilization-style games into being something like that, somewhat like the strategy layer of Total War games, but that's not what Old World does; at best, you can use pre-made maps, and maybe you could write some kind of custom starting script that only allows playing the historical nations for that map and puts them in the correct places.
That being said, considering I got it for $2.50 I'm not complaining whatsoever.
Actually, now that I say that a mod that creates a pre-set map of that sort, like you would have in Total War or a Paradox game, would be pretty interesting...

Hoptale is a Roguelite strategy game built around a single twist: Hopscotch ...
Firmly grasp it!
impales hand with fan
I am always fascinated by depiction of systematic evils, and 40k is pretty consistent with it
Warframe also is pretty great with that, for one character in particular
WH40k in Rogue Trader for example, you have sympathetic characters that explicitly tell you that they did partecipate in hunting the underclasses for sport.
Now this guy is depicted to be evil, those two characters I'm thinking about aren't depicted to be explicitly evil, they are though, near everyone that has the ability to exercise any agency in that society functionally is.

Here is a video game that you’ve never heard of before. This is “Horse Racing” for the Intellivision, and this was from 1980. The object is to place bets for one of the opponent’s horses, and after you bet them, it’s off to the race to see which opponent would win. It’s a variety of gambling and horse racing. It plays up to 6 players, and this is the game that every pony can play. https://youtu.be/FunrEqdJ_iM?si=7muWRDpAiKgFkfL8
Horse Racing is an equestrian video game released by Mattel Electronics for its Intellivision video game console in 1980. Although primarily a sports video game, Horse Racing received Mattel's "Gaming Network" branding, due to its pari-mutuel betting on horses during the game.
The game houses 8 virtual Thoroughbred race horses residing in the f...
Steel ball run
been on the castlevania train what with the new game this year. finally proper sat down and went through CV2 for the first time, got the worst ending, but couldn't stop thinking about it and so did another run soon after netting a better end. it's not good but it is very interesting, the way the world wraps around itself i found real neat, and of course the music always rocks it's a 'vania. farming for hearts, tedious backtracking thanks to false platforms, and the notoriously rough translation were the worst parts imo
Ew
They're just using ai now to make roblox super realistic looking
humor in this game has been top notch
I can't say I was expecting Roblox to use the whole stupid ''democratizing art'' argument but I can't say I'm surprised
and so Dracula was gone for good this time and he'd totally not come back again..... and again.... and again.... and then one more time...
and then he reincarnated into some japanese teenager that one time
Castlevania 2 sucks but i love it anyways
I only finished CV1 so I can't speak on anything CV related
Castlevania is a fantastic game
It doesn't even look that good anyways. Like roblox itself used to have a really good and simple art direction to begin with
I stopped playing in like 2013. My account itself was made in like 2008 or 2009
I should play it again
ive played a decent chunk of the castlevania games but i don't actually have much of an opinion on them so it feels weird
probably my favorite was Rondo even over SotN or other igas just because it's the one i think about going back to
of the "classic" CVs I tried, I agree Rondo of Blood was the best, although Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon is even better
SotN, despite its historical significance, did not age nearly as well
All I can say is that I tried a bunch of CVs and none of them really hooked me, the only one so far I'm considering playing through is precisely SOTN because it felt so good to play from the get go, but I tried Aria and I didn't super get into it, I tried Circle of the Moon and Harmony of Dissonance and I didn't really care for them enough to get anywhere past the first screens, Circle felt a little better than Harmony but I don't like the whip-vanias
what did CV2 do
I liked Order of Ecclesia a little better for a very silly reason but it still had the same ''problem'' of Aria where it didn't particularly feel super satisfying to play, I just don't get the same feeling compared to when I booted up Metroid Zero Mission, or Samus Returns, or Dread, or even Super which is my least favourite Metroid
yeah, the whole Castlevania side of the genre doesn't have nearly as good of a core mechanical gameplay loop as the Metroid side or the post-HK renaissance
the Bloodstaineds are the best I've played of that semi-genre, with the usual weaknesses being the smallest they've ever been, but all of them were still present
was there a dark ages before HK
nope, if anything it was an upward trend from the PC indie boom to HK and then it was even more up
Metroid and Castlevania themselves did slow down quite a bit, but in the big picture that was effectively when the genre shifted to being mostly indie
it's like, really weird and cryptic
almost nothing like the first game
it's fairly open ended whereas the first one was linear and straight forward
it's very similar to Zelda 2
I like to define the current phase of MVs by HK, not because "MVs were dead until HK" (they weren't; Cave Story and Ori predate HK) but because nearly every great MV to come out since HK has some shared elements
i liked Hollow Knight well enough but it didn't blow my mind like it seemed to for everyone else
finally lol
which is fine, no game is mind-blowing for literally everyone
there's even a few things about HK/SS that I personally dislike (but don't cause much harm in practice)
because of the difficulty or something else?
yeah difficulty
totally fair
which is odd because i love Dark Souls and Elden Ring but whatevs
I see, yea that makes sense now
and I'm still that one weirdo who had an utterly awful experience with Dark Souls
despite half of my favorite games, including the post-HK MVs, taking heavy Souls inspiration
it took me a couple tries to get into it but once it clicked i got really obsessed with it
Castlevania came out with a fair amount of games in the 00s but Lords of Shadow were the ones that kinda fully slowed them down and stopped them until now, since SOTN they came out with CV 64, Legends, Circle of the Moon, Chronicles, Harmony of Dissonence, Aria, Lament of Innocence, Dawn of Sorrow, Curse of Darkness, Portrait of Ruin, X Chronicles which was a remake of Rondo which included SOTN and the og Rondo, and then Ecclesia, all from 1999 all the way up until 2008 was like a good 10 years worth of pure CV stuff coming out pretty consistently
Metroid slowed down a bunch since Prime came out cause they focused on Prime games, Fusion came out before Prime for GBA and then Zero Mission after Prime in 2004, then Prime 2 and 3 and some Prime spin-offs and it wouldn't be until 2017 coincidentally the same year HK came out that they'd come back with the Metroid 2 remake
I guess they're 3D games, where SS is 2D?
perhaps
and then Dread, and now we're still waiting for whenever the next Metroid is, but Metroid never really had a super consistent schedule of games coming out outside of the Prime series and even then 4 famously was in the works for a while
usually a metroidvania is 2D while a Zelda(-like) or Soulslike is 3D
(extremely large asterisks)
Metroid Dread is still the only Metroid game ive completed
full context: my introduction to metroidvanias was Metroid Zero Mission and Fusion. I think I replayed Fusion literally dozens of times in middle and high school. Partly because they let me take my GBA to school
Coming across people saying they want a SOTN remake where it's 3D and is more of a Soulslike rattles my head like nothing I've come across, and I really like the Souls franchise
didn't Castlevania basically already try to do that multiple times and nobody liked it
what's a good example of a 3D metroidvania
hooo boy
I'll spare you the long answer and say Pseudoregalia is my usual go-to example for that
Metroid Prime 😛
I think people liked Lament of Innocence well enough, it was the Lords of Shadow series that they didn't like
oh yeah that one
and yeah the literal 3D Metroids and Castlevanias get included since they are the genre namesake
half life
but it's often reasonably argued that the 2D and 3D Metroids are basically different genres so oh look we're doing the long version
Really!?
it's a relatively niche title
Pseudoregalia is a 2023 platform game by indie developer rittzler. The player controls Sybil, an anthropomorphic goat-like creature, who finds herself trapped in a castle in a dream realm. It is stylistically influenced by fifth generation era video games of the late 1990s, utilizing low-poly graphics.
Nire and I got deep into it but if you aren't looking for these kinds of games like I am it's very easy to have just never heard of it
Yes, but Virtus is furry enough I would have thought they would hear about it on that basis.
Oh yeah I found Pseudoregalia's creator Bluesky last night they shared a higher poly Sybil model they were doing
still it's got easily my favorite 3D platforming mechanics in I dunno how many years
i liked ecclesia for the very biased reason that i thought shanoa was pretty and that's also the reason i played ritual of the night
Huh, never crossed my sphere
goat
baaaaaah
to my knowledge, those two are basically the only female protag Igavanias, so very understandable
well I mean that's kinda why I liked it too is purely because of Shanoa, it's also why I was more drawn to Hades 2 whereas I hadn't played Hades 1 before
you guys need to stop being interesting im trying to watch a movie /j
(Curse of the Moon doesn't count because it's swapping between 4 protags and Zangetsu is clearly the main one)
what's Igavania
that's a new term for me
witch aesthetic was cooler to me than the vampires then so that was really it haha
I have a hard time following the indie game scene these days because it became so incredibly flooded
The best thing about that game is still that they had to patch in pants to stop people from being distracted by the featurless MC lack of clothing
the more rpg orientated castlevanias directed by iga iirc
someone will answer better than me
instagram vania
so, the term "Igavania" refers to Koji Igarashi, who worked on several classic Castlevania titles, and famously left Konami to co-found the studio that then made the Bloodstained games
so in practice I mostly use "Igavania" to mean "Castlevanias + Bloodstaineds"
ah I see, yea am not familiar with Bloodstained
and yeah having more RPG elements is one of the distinguishing features of the Igavania side of Metroidvanias, as opposed to the Metroids and the post-HKs
the Bloodstaineds are basically Castlevania but it's good again because Iga left Konami

I think it was precisely Iga who deleted her from canon but there was also Sonia Belmont
and I'm not even simplifying/kidding there, I've played enough of both now to comfortably say that Bloodstained: CotM and RotN are the best Igavanias (in the "classic/arcade" style and "modern/MV" style respectively)
(well maybe CotM 2 is slightly better than 1 but I didn't try that :P)
All I know is the new CV looks pretty dope and hopefully I can get into that one compared to the ones I've tried
Igavania sounds like someone gave up on genre naming
"what kind of game is this"
"idk, ig a vania"
and it's not a roguelike or a roguelite or a 3d or a soulsike, it looks like it's gonna be just a good old Castlevania game but modern
tbf, using some guy's literal name is not the most common move in video game genres
what if we called platformers miyamotolikes
The traversal certainly looks much more fun than any other CV I've seen
But Miyamoto is not a platformer
very Blasphemous-y
4X games Meier-likes
or called metroidvanias "search action games" like they do in Japan
that won't confuse anyone
soulslikes are now Miyazakilikes
good thing there's only one famous guy named Miyazaki
ok true i used to get Hayao and Hidetaka confused all the time
tbf there's probably a billion guys with "Iga" in their name
why they call it Doom Clones
but not Doom-likes
every shooter except the ones i don't like are Doom clones /j
I think it was meant to be a value judgement at the time but I'm not sure
might've saved the roguelike/lite genre confusion if they called em rogue clones vs roguelites
parents will just say "Nintendo-likes"
what's your favorite genre?
Nintendo
probably unironically true for some
Yep. Plenty of people only care about Nintendo-made video games and have no interest beyond that sphere.
Candy Crush
I grew up heavily on the DS and Wii
then defected to PC
hey, my DS supported GBA cartridges, so I played a lot of Super Mario Bros 3 bc that had a GBA port
so same thing
Heh, true enough

It would be nice if they showed off more of the actual pods rather than the speeders
For story-driven games like these that come with default names, I usually stick with the defaults. If they have no name by default, that's when I pick my own name.
That is what I would do. I have not the foggiest what you would do. :P
I stuck with default

You're better than me. I once did a LP of FFVII and intentionally decided to piss off both halves of the fandom.
I named Ms. Gainsborough... Aeriths
I even admitted that was the reason I did it
What about in undertale? Only way I know where that's got a special feature to it
best character tbh
HE EVEN REFERENCED MONTY PYTHON
oh hey that vids done
neat
oof tho, being away from home and 10 games need updating
ah yes, the famous French soccer player
(the French localization renamed him to Djidane because of this)
won my first fight, give me that FF victory theme
the final results of that were way more plausible than I was expecting
oh god abilities are tied to equipment?
isn't that a pretty common thing in RPGs
How horrifying
I want to say I think that was a thing leftover from FF8? In FF7 I'm pretty sure the items and abilities weren't tied to each other and it was just Materias
I should play FF8 sometime.... it's the only other one of that era of FF that I never played
materia's what I had in mind
I guess in E33 you could argue the pictos aren't "equipment" per se? not sure what sort of definition hc had in mind
the materia grind never stops

yeaaaaaaaaaaah
ive only ever played FFVII
thats okay, it happens a lot
I've played 5, 7, and 8, 14 doesn't count, I keep losing my save files for 9, 10 lost my attention, I ought to play 13 and give it a chance, the original three games aged like milk, got near the end of 4 and lost my save, 6 I got stuck on a boss, and 15 tried to be kingdom hearts but forgot that it was more than just mashing one button.
If you're like me and you hate ATB, and if you're playing on PC, there's Moguri mod for FF9 which is super handy, has a ton of new features amongst which is an alternative battle mode for true turn based
Yeah and level up the ability too
Really encourages exploration and going for item chests wherever you spot them
Also the crafting system, basic as it is
i did give it a look earlier, but
- I'm iffy on the AI upscailing
- It's 5 fucking gigs. That's like, half the game's size.
I have no strong opinions on ATB because all the things about turn-based RPGs that bother me are at a far higher level; saying anything about ATB in isolation would be missing the point
These upscale projects are always gonna be a little iffy but I really appreciate how neat and clean it all looks, I use the upscaled versions of RE2 and RE3 for Dolphin whenever I play just because sometimes the crunchiness of the backgrounds with the higher resolution models really distracts me, but there's 100% a lot of background details that are sometimes a little messed up or don't necessarily look better
but yeah any HD mod is gonna be pretty big
the RE4 restoration mod is gigantic
tutorial finished
plus like, i know i'm playing the Steam version, but I do want as much of a "vanilla" experience as possible
SHE CAN SUMMON FUCKING BAHAMUT?
Dragon King be like GIANT LASER BEAM
That's fair but at the same time there's a lot of features on something like the Moguri mod I can see being helpful to newcomers that would otherwise drop the game because of how old it is, it's not so much a wacky crazy mod as much as it is trying to put a bunch of bug fixes and QoL features and leave the rest untouched, that's really mostly what it is
but if you have a tolerance for older games sure, I know I'm one of those weirdos that doesn't care about playing old jank PC games

Well, abilities werent' gained directly from equipment, but equipment had mateira slots and the way they were arranged definitely did impact what ability you could use.
FF8 it was bullshit tied to the summons (guardian forces) that were bound to your characters.
What kind of QoL features are we talking?
I replayed FF9 half a dozen times and it didn't even pass through my head to look up mods for it, now Im curious.
Bugfixes, Widescreen, 60 FPS, improved effects and improved camera cause the original can be a little jaggy at times, optional original PSX font if you wanted it, improved audio, true turn based mode (not ATB or 'wait') and the ability to skip things like the intro to every single battle or adjust the speed of battles, controller support, basically the whole shabang you can expect from something like a modern remaster of a game instead of a straight port of the exact original experience, and it's all fully modular so you can enable what you want to enable and not worry about other stuff if you don't want it
I thought this was a mod of the PS1 version at first
Memoria is the custom launcher you can install mods with super easily if you're the kind of person that doesn't mind setting this sort of thing up, I've always loved messing around with mods and stuff like this on my games so I never cared but I know some people don't care to bother with setting a bunch of stuff up and just want to directly play the game
I think that would actually turn the PS1 into a nuclear reactor
I remember Beetle PSX HW got modified to support HD textures largely because of a Final Fantasy AI upscale project
but maybe that was FF8
in fact, I thought FF9 was a PS1 exclusive until now
I mean, technically it is
I'm pretty sure it didn't get re-released so much as it just had the original rom made available on PS stores and the PC port came out iiiinnnnnnn
2016
so relatively recent
Moguri Mod is also pretty recent like 4-5 years old as well
it's one of those games you can feel runs on a PS1-oriented SDK even on PC too
(camera angles are imprecise, for instance)
probably not the worst offender, but I can really notice it in games like Rollcage on PC
I think that's pretty much the sort of thing Moguri/Memoria ''fix'' for FF9
Memoria Engine is a community rewrite of Final Fantasy IX's game engine that aims to add features, fix bugs and expand mod making capabilities (adding content, localizing...). Memoria includes a built-in Mod manager, bugfixes and optional improvements (camera, framerate, audio, controller, UI, options, cheats...) while supporting third-party mods.
yea

that's how Burn works in FFXIV!
or it's called Pyretic, but technicalities
(well technically it's not an instant kill, but the concept is the same)
"man i'm doing so good at this boss fight-"
oh hell yeah pink Zidane
(also weird apparently he's called Yitán in Spanish following the JP pronunciation of ''Jitan Toraibaru'')
well at least i know one of Zidane's Dyna attacks is multi target
(yes in my first attempt I killed Black Waltz 1 that quick)
Apparently people don't like Garnet's new name being Dagger?
"New" as in, the identity she assumes after the Ice Cave
The streamer I watched play FF9 called her 'Shanks'
and I kinda like it better than Dagger...
I like her name change but "Dagger" does feel like it's lacking something
the funny thing is you can just call her Garnet still which is funny cause she's supposed to be hiding
somehow I suspect if I'd played in JP it would've had more oomph
well she should just undo the fusion, nobody's looking for ruby and sapphire
AHAHAHAHAHA
Ganetto and Dagaa?
I dunno....
Zidane and Steiner: fuckin' goin' at it like wild dogs
Vivi: "aight i'm out"
See that is a good name, but I do want to stick to canon names... Even if I do think Dagger is kinda dumb, it suits her "sheltered princess" personality
It is dumb, but I can see why.
I do think it's supposed to be this sheltered girl being like ''see I can have a cool name too!!'' sort of thing
oh it absolutely is that
see i can do media analysis on games i barely know about

since i never mentioned it before
love the fact her hood is a White Mage robe
even if for some reason she can fucking summon Bahamut
if whm did that i might play the damn job in FFXIV
"Dagger" is the only default name in FF9 you can kinda get away with changing, because it really doesn't matter. It's a fake name anyway.
but i like the idea of
"hey Zidane what are these you dropped?"
"Daggers?"
"Damn... that sounds cool, that's my name now."
I like the idea of her going:
"What are these?"
"Daggers."
"Oh. That's a shit name. Let's go with Raven."
she looks so cute in it I wish she kept it longer
I think that's a reference to the White Mage outfit from FF1

she is literally a white mage after all... that somehow double classed into Summoner- SERIOUSLY WHY CAN SHE SUMMON BAHAMUT-
moral of the story tho don't let me name things
what pokemon ROM hack is this
Moemon
not a romhack, fully original game called Touhou Puppet Dance Performance: Shard of Dreams
it plays very much like pokemon, but different mechanics entirely
Oh
damn, a fine addition to my collection
'tis a bitch to install tho
especially if you want the Extended mod that adds up to TH18 characters
We test and tear down Valve's new Steam Controller, the first of three Steam hardware devices releasing this year. Here's how it compares with the original Steam Controller released a decade ago, how the gyro and trackpads perform, and the unique features of its tracking puck. Plus, an interview with the Valve team about the gamepad's design and...
legit may or may not require you to switch your OS's language to Japanese

finally someone i trust reviews this thing
I still love how this controller seems like Valve went ''fuck it, slap everything on it''
Savage Adams is a gamer?!?!?!
...oh
two track pads, two analogs, four buttons on the back, and sensors on the triggers that can detect when your fingers are on them, it's wireless but also you can use it wired if you wanted too
and gyro, of course
Or maybe it was this
do that, reset your PC, bing bam boom you can actually install the fucking thing
isn't that "locale" setting what we mean by "switching your OS to Japanese"?
Is that really surprising?
yes
i am hardly tech literate

holy moly
Yeah there are a few expansions
Each session can get, uh.... very long, too.
I have 550 hours in it and I'm still learning new things about it
It's a PDX game, so it's usually loaded with expansions and lots of shit to learn.
So many xpacs that at this point the subscription model they have kinda makes sense
If you like games where a single run can take you anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks to finish, Stellaris might be of interest to you
Also they manage to stuff basically every scifi reference ever into it.
They just added the ME Citadel.
Personally more of a Total War Warhammer 3 guy, love me a big battlefield filled with carnage at the hands of fantasy dudes.
I should play it one day when the mood hits.
Guys, my Frieza Race character found some pants. They're a bit Satanic though
im replaying Arkham Asylum and man the Arkham games have gotta be the best superhero games ever
I would argue Insomiac Spider-Man, but I'm a little biased towards Spider-man And his nice butt
Insomniac Spidey is definitely a close second for me
and im definitely biased too because i like Batman more

Spiderman remastered and 2 are peak yeah
i havent actually played the second one yet but i love the first
I got the platinum on PS4 for Spider-man.
Didn't for Miles Morales. If only because a couple achievements required NG+
i dont think ive ever done NG+ on either Arkham or Spider-Man
I don't like the original look for peter at all
Remastered and 2 made him look so much better
Although I can admit that some of the things Spider-man does with his webs I 100% would not do if I was Spidey
i have gotten all the Riddler trophies in the Arkham games though so im pretty proud of myself there
Hanging someone upside down? The cops either get there fast and somehow get them down or that's a manslaughter charge
I would instead do it right side up.
There is definitely some concession to realism for expediency in the games in general
people in comic books are more durable than irl people
Nevermind that I did glue a few people to cars that later exploded, let's forget that incident
The next spiderman game they do they need to include cooper coen/web weaver as a costume
Would be peak
Arkham Knight is still one of the best looking games ever imo
it's crazy how it's 10 years old and it still looks amazing
That's the one in the series I don't own, yet
Knight is the one that I bounced off on.
Man, I could never be batman
the story in Knight is a bit ehhh but the moment to moment gameplay is some of the best in the series
Not enough coffee in the world to keep getting me through nights
I liked City a lot, I liked Asylum, Origins was meh but had better bossfights IMO, which made me enjoy it well enough
Origins def has some of the best boss fights
I liked City until the goons wised up and figured out what a gun was
but i definitely think Origins is the weakest of the four
Then I never really figured out how to disarm them
the Arkham games also have the honor of being the only games i actually like being stealthy in
usually i hate stealth in games
What about heavy stealth?
what's that
No survivors
No one can prove you were there if there were no witnesses
Which is kinda par for the course in how I beat most MGS areas. I try regular stealth, fail, and just kill enough people they stop sending people at me

It would be cool if someday there was a superhero game where actually keeping everyone alive was part of the harder difficulty.
Prototype 2 was a really cool superhero game, even if you're more of a villain
i really want Sony to port infamous to the pc
Same here, those games were so good
i have fond memories of watching my aunt's husband playing that game
RPCS3 got big performance improvements for inFAMOUS recently
I think the first game is playable from start to finish now
I remember watching my brother play that game and be like... super evil, while I was a good guy. Well, I say good, my morality was Famous.
I still was not a good person to my enemies.
Payday 2 gets a patch
in the patch notes:
Killed enemies in loud now alert other nearby enemies
you mean they didn't alert enemies already before?
nope
Holy moly is payday 2 STILL getting updates?
yea. it is a cash cow. they still service it and port stuff from payday 3 when possible
It sees more play than payday 3, that one has been plagued with issues since launch so to keep the company alive payday 2 is still getting updates
Honestly all they need to do with Payday 2 is upgrade the graphics, they didn't need a Payday 3
Starbreeze gave the update rights over to Sidetrack Games
they're maintaining the game now
while Starbreeze pumps what money they have left into trying to keep Payday 3 alive
they dropped a few new weapons with this update too
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4543600/PAYDAY_2_Espionage_Weapon_Pack/
Perfect for the undercover heister and secret agent alike, the Espionage Weapon Pack adds five brand new tools to your arsenal. Compact, quiet, and adaptable, these tools ensure the job is done right while maintaining their punch if the situation gets out of hand.

Unknown Worlds
You madlads
So, in the first Subnautica...the radio says
Rescue operation will be dispatched to your location in 9...9...9...9...9... hours.
The first game was released into EA on December 16th, 2014 at 18:30 UTC
SN2 EA is dropping on May 14th, 2026 at 15:00 UTC
The time between these dates is.... 99999 + 5.5 hours, a 0.0055% difference
G motherbucking G Unknown Worlds
If that's only a coincidence, it's a damn hell of a convenient one
whoa, that's cool
Damn south americans out here grinding the RE speedruns
First an Uruguayan gets the RE4 WR and now a Chilean gets the RE3 WR
today I learned that Chrono Gear Warden of Time is made by Galaxy Trail
the same ppl behind Freedom Planet
I did think some levels felt sonic-y
Speaking of Sonic-y games, there was this one indie game I saw recently that felt very Sonic-y but I can't remember the name right now
this one
there was Penny's Big Breakaway too which was by Sonic Mania devs
gotta make haste
but I don't hear anything about that game after all this time
Haste is fun, but even though people compare it to Sonic it really only starts and ends at: ''gotta go fast''
It's not really the kind of gameplay I expect out of a Sonic game, Shadow Gens was legitimately the peakest Sonic game I've played in recent memory, way better than what Frontiers was doing, but what does come to mind is Haste feels like all those fan-made projects people make about Sonic where it's a very large map and they let you go really fast, which are fun projects and all but they kinda feel like those Flash fan project games where you can go really fast and then after 10 seconds the novelty wears out and you go ''alright, so what now?''
but it's good it looks like one of those high speed high focus games
Haste is a high-speed third-person running game, set in a collapsing universe. Race through a variety of worlds, master your movement and use items and abilities to progress through each level before it falls apart around you. The game consists of ten Shards, each featuring a collection of procedurally generated levels that must be completed wi…

I had never heard of Freedom Planet though, I might check that out later
this is a pretty good description of the development
Game director Sabrina DiDuro (a.k.a. Strife) first began developing Freedom Planet as a Sonic the Hedgehog fangame using characters created by DeviantArt user Ziyo Ling for its main cast. Early into development, she lost interest in creating a derivative work and reconceived the project as her own intellectual property. Sash Lilac, originally a hedgehog, became a dragon; antagonist Doctor Eggman was replaced by Lord Brevon with his eyebrows resembling Doctor Eggman's mustache; and the Sonic series' ring-based health system was abandoned. Further changes were suggested by fans and incorporated throughout development.
so, very much inspired
ig I'll play that after Chrono Gear, I do have both Freedom Planet and its sequel
Subnautica 2 EA release times
Price will be $29.99 (with region localized prices)
Apparently the SN2 devs said in their Discord that if you buy during the first week of EA you'll get a Reaper statue for your base

It was really funny when in my game she went "You may no longer call me Garnet. My new name is..."
"Garnet"
Gohan black who is actually black is actually exists wth
i was internally debating going with Garnet, but decided to go with the "canon" names... regardless of how silly Dagger is.
(again, not a knock against the game, I get why she chose that name and the implications, it is funny though)
they're so adorable

Nah, the funniest thing isn't that she can choose the same name, it's that everyone else goes along with it, and nobody notices, not even their enemies.
Dungeon Clawler 1.0 is coming to Steam, Mobile, PS5, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch on April 30th.
All infos and links: https://dungeonclawler.com/
You haven't seen SSJ4 Gogeta?
My 8 year old nephew, my 6 month old niece, my 36 year old ex-girlfriend
Did you know that this guy will never kill Garnet?
yeah he just kidnaps her
(i lost this fight)
I don't want to make the Vivi sad but
I can't lie to him either, can I?
He is one year old. You have to lie to him
He's one year old. He's old enough to learn the truth
My favorite part of FF9 is when Vivi beats Seifer in a competition where you use bats to knock balls out of people

Met Freya, died laughing at why Cid is the way he is, gotta stop for now because I got support
man six hours in and it feels like i've barely scratched the surface
well Steam says 8.1 but that could also be me leaving the game on pause/game overs
silently waiting for the Roses of May hammer to drop
You've got a loooooooooong way to go still :P
There are even like two or three points where you feel like the game is about to end and then there's another twist
Good twists though
Today we have news to share about an update coming to The Outer Worlds as well as changes being made to the store pages. Starting today we will be pushing a couple of updates to The Outer Worlds through the Spacer’s Choice Edition. Today’s update is to test our release pipeline and fix a few issues that are in the game.
tl;dr The original edition of Outer Worlds is being delisted from Steam and GOG on May 27th. As compensation, everyone who owns it before that date will get the "Spacer's Choice" edition free.
XBone, PS4, and Switch are not affected by this change. Instead, XBone and PS4 owners will need to own the base game and both DLCs in order to upgrade to SCE, but the upgrade itself will become free if you do.
They're also patching a bunch of bugs in SCE, and adding grenades.
the good ending™
(although ideally, they should give players the original edition whenever you have SCE... like Serious Sam classic when you have HD)
Oh noes, I'm getting the Spacers Choice Edition for free.
Same
Adding grenades? That's neat, actually.
Really ought to play the game...
I own it but barely touched it.

Nice, you met Ratchel
this is cool n all but is there any way to skip the animation
man i'm really struggling with just 3 party members
hey did you know you can get a party member at this point by catching a frog?

Quina! They're very fun and adorable
froge
Quina’s very good once you know how to use their Blue Magic effectively and which enemies to eat.

yes, very cute...
finished Chrono Gear: Warden of Time
it's a great game & had good fun with it, great platformer, and nice attention to details, love the spritework, it's so pretty at times
writing is nice, lots of nods & references but also seems like it could maybe be decent intro for those who are not familiar with Hololive
(humor especially is nice, got me many times
)
story is something I didnt expect, so
massive SPOILERS if you want to play it
it is something I highly recommend to go blind in
but I'll give a breakdown bc it's pretty cool
||you play as Ouro Kronii who's part of a council to keep order in the universe
she represents Time, & the other members have roles like Space, Nature, etc
an event that happens at the start of the game causes you to go out & fix the space-time continuum, & stop the main villain of the game, Laplus Darkness, plus her 4 friends (the 5 making up the HoloX villain group)
But that Laplus is from a different timeline that has been dying (and her HoloX members being dead) so she's trying to take over your timeline, using that timeline's version of HoloX to do her bidding||
||except its not yours either because the Kronii you've been playing as, is from the same decaying timeline as the villain, the whole time, the original Kronii died when spacetime got messed up, & the Kronii you're controlling has replaced her
but not rly out of malice, she takes it upon herself to fix things since her actions & her timeline is what caused the rupture in the first place
it's a combination of her wanting to right that wrong and fill in the old Kronii's role, but also being a bit selfish because her own council and friends perished, & she wants to be with "them" again
She keeps this all a secret too, none of the council members know that their Kronii is dead, & has been replaced. It's a plot twist that happens later in the game but there are hints & bits of foreshadowing||
I heard XCOM. I am here
oh goodness look at this precious thing
perfect
I love how done she looks.
Dragoon
summoner just has a big green horn on her head
